The US government has ordered that all AIs competing for government contracts must be viewpoint neutral - that is, abandoning the DEI bullshit that infests all AI models. (Tech Crunch)

As Rumman Chowdhury, a data scientist, CEO of the tech nonprofit Humane Intelligence, and former U.S. science envoy for AI, put it, "Anything [the Trump administration doesn't] like is immediately tossed into this pejorative pile of woke."
Stop being woke then.
Mark Lemley, a law professor at Stanford University, told TechCrunch the executive order is "clearly intended as viewpoint discrimination, since [the government] just signed a contract with Grok, aka 'MechaHitler.'"

If you're using the NPM package Stylus, well, now you're not. (Bleeping Computer)

NPM took it down.

Apparently one of the maintainers also published a proof-of-concept security vulnerability, and that led to Stylus being taken down without warning.

And that - because this is how NPM works - means that no application that relies on Stylus directly or indirectly can be built.

Unless you go fetch it from GitHub. That still works.
Over 400 organisations including the Department of Energy have been breached while waiting for a Microsoft Sharepoint patch. (The Register)

In my specific situation the concern is less about technical skill and more about grit. A commitment to ensuring that the correct thing happens no matter who gets upset about it.

Not many young Americans have that and I've never found either a Chinese or an Indian with it. They'll still probably give it to India, though.

And that misses the point entirely. Which isn't a simple criticism of Trump alone - the entire American public has missed the point since a least WW II.

And that point is simple human nature. Asking - or demanding - that people leave their biases at the door is a fantasy. People just can not do that even if they try. The biases are baked in. They make us who we are individually and collectively. This idea that groups and agencies can be constrained by rules or oaths against their biases has been disproven time and again.

Yet here we go once more.

75 Yesterday afternoon I sat down and wrote out the things I want in a house: the must-haves (MHs) and the nice-to-haves (NTHs), and the conditions I call a plus. Filled most of a notebook page, double-spaced. Looking, for example, at Evansville and vicinity, and Duncan, OK (as someone here suggested I do), I see my MHs are quite possible to find at my price range, and a lot of the NTHs and pluses are there too. No one house has all of them, but many of the NTHs (wall paint, laminate floors) are things I can add myself.

So, despite having a longish list, I am encouraged that I am not being unreasonable.

I may only get one shot at this, and in any case I want to settle down and actually *live in* the house, so I'd like to get it right.

There are first-time homebuyer programs all over the place, but they all have restrictions such as "so much income" and the price of the house relative to the area. Probably, too, you have to stay in the house for x years before selling. I'll put in for any down payment assistance that seems reasonable -- but for the right house and the right price I won't need it.

Decades ago, city declined participation in a new water reservoir for the region. Then a drought occurred. City demanded water purchase without paying debt service on the new reservoir. But I am a racist for voting against merger of city and county. Now city is whining about loss of federal funding for antique performance venue.

119 Last week a study commission in Portland, OR had 4 ideas on to fix the drug problem. Number 1 was just give the druggies what they want. Either administered in a clinic or on the street. The commission seemed to be worried about finding jobs for drug pushers since they won't be needed. With budget problems the city is having, what to do to keep them from criminal things. Oh, the problems on the west coast cities never end. (and other cities also)
