By Design

On Monday, Ace posted about the "shocking" failure of Comey and the IC in the Clinton E-Mail scandal. It turns out, as everyone with a brain had already guessed, that they didn't bother to look into it at all. They just claimed they did, and the press went along with it and asked no questions. That is the press' part to play, and it played its part as well as it always does.

At the end of that post, Ace quoted a tweet about the press in a different context, which is about Tapper's book. That tweet reads, in part:

The main takeaway from Original Sin is that CNN doesn't do reporting/investigating. Tapper admits that everything they said about Biden's mental and physical health was based solely on what the White House said.

Yes, and? Why is this surprising? It isn't new.

It was nearly a decade ago that the White House publicly boasted about this, well before Biden was even a gleam in the Party's eye as a controllable, compromise candidate to wade into the vacuum left by the various Democrat factions all seeing their preferred candidates collapse early in the 2020 campaign. This isn't some new reality, and it has nothing to do with Biden. Biden was a beneficiary of prior work and neither he nor his people built the environment that made this possible.

Though he, too, stood on the shoulders of giants, the total credulity of the press - total to the point that it doesn't even know how to be anything else - is the product of Barack Obama and his administration. Specifically, it is the product of Ben Rhodes, who worked manfully for years to create exactly the environment that Tapper is now decrying and at which everyone is, laughably, claiming some sort of surprise. Rhodes was astonishingly clear about it when he spoke to the New York Times for its fawning special article about him in 2016.

He is the master shaper and retailer of Obama's foreign-policy narratives, at a time when the killer wave of social media has washed away the sand castles of the traditional press. His ability to navigate and shape this new environment makes him a more effective and powerful extension of the president's will than any number of policy advisers or diplomats or spies.

So he was a big, important spin doctor but it goes somewhat beyond that. In his own words, as quoted by the New York Times:

"We created an echo chamber," he admitted, when I asked him to explain the onslaught of freshly minted experts cheerleading for the deal. "They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say."
When I suggested that all this dark metafictional play seemed a bit removed from rational debate over America's future role in the world, Rhodes nodded. "In the absence of rational discourse, we are going to discourse the [expletive] out of this," he said. "We had test drives to know who was going to be able to carry our message effectively, and how to use outside groups like Ploughshares, the Iran Project and whomever else. So we knew the tactics that worked."

And now, a decade later, people claim surprise.

Why? This is not a surprise. It wasn't a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention, and it can't have been a surprise to those in the press blindly reporting whatever the White House told them to report. It's all they know how to do. Obama, Rhodes and various others built - and boasted about - the "echo chamber" that replaced what was left of the dreg-infested newsrooms across the country. Anyone in the press or anything even approaching a wonkish position who now claims surprise that the press credulously published everything they were told to publish and asked no questions deserves nothing but disbelief and derision.

They knew because they had to have known. It was nearly a decade ago that those who helped design the modern Press echo chamber went to that same echo chamber to boast about it. This is how the press works, and the only way it knows how to work. The American press was never any good, but it's now also hopelessly incompetent. It asks no questions not only because it doesn't want to, but because it doesn't even know how any more. It is an echo chamber filled with automata, and nothing more. It can be nothing else.

With the Biden dementia story, along with everything else before, during and after his illegitimate administration, the Press is operating precisely according to its design - and nobody can credibly claim surprise about it. It is working as its designers built it to work, before they took their victory laps in the New York Times Magazine.

Well, 70 years ago (I am thinking just before the depression) each town had like 5 papers, so it was easier to get info out there because everyone was competing.

when you watch an old movie involving the press, say a Frank Capra our Preston Sturges or really any of those guys,

the main thing is that those characters are all about getting "the story" getting at the truth, and doing whatever it takes to get it and if it takes down the big fellas...well, so much the better.

The modern reporter is pitiful little leech sucking up to the powerful, doing no digging or research, just relaying verbatim any garbage that flows out of some Democrat pol's cakehole. And if it allows the big fellas and gals to get away with crime, treason, and murder....well, so much the better.

the main thing is that those characters are all about getting "the story" getting at the truth, and doing whatever it takes to get it and if it takes down the big fellas...well, so much the better.

The modern reporter is pitiful little leech sucking up to the powerful, doing no digging or research, just relaying verbatim any garbage that flows out of some Democrat pol's cakehole. And if it allows the big fellas and gals to get away with crime, treason, and murder....well, so much the better.

The modern reporter is nothing more than a low level flak for Democrat public relations.

Generational changes--reporters during the 30's often came from working class roots and often did not have a college degree. If you care to dig it up, Clark Gable played in such a movie with some Doris Day that was an idealistic journalism professor (Teacher's Pet) in 1958. The movie documents the shift from reporter with just the facts to college journalism with their damn narratives.

Bloated staffs, legacy expensive production costs, and overpaid 'talent'. As you said, Colbert was simply in the lead and the merger meant that CBS legacy exec types could not save his money losing ass. Ironically, it hurts the other two remaining network late night hosts--Kimmel and Fallon for Colbert to have the long goodbye. Kimmel, at least, is safe as long as Iger is still CEO but Iger's days are getting shorter as well as Disney retread head. Fallon has the heavy legacy of the Tonight Show behind him but is performing the worst out of the big three. As you say, he is probably the weakest link and has a ready, if not good, replacement in Seth Meyers to move up. That allows Comcast to cancel later or go really cheap with it.

Kennedy was a lot like Trump, he thought the purpose of a war footing was to win, not "maintain the balance of power" like we did subsequently in Vietnam, and places like Iraq and Afghanistan. I mean, even Reagan tried to keep the balance of power, but no one was admitting the massive structural and economic failings of the USSR.

While flying across the Atlantic a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that they had Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" and "Batman VS Superman" on video. So, I decided to watch them again since I've had time to get over my disappointment of those movies.
Bulletpoints:
1) Snyder had no fucking idea at all who Superman was or what his story was about.
2) ZS's Superman story is about fear. The fear of a dangerous, all-powerful god that will one day destroy us all. His Justice League cut hammers that home,
3) Viewed in that light, ZS did a pretty great job with his movies as movies (But they still suck mightily as Superman movies) but he probably was building toward insane evil Superman in his next flick.
4) I don't hate BvsS. It's actually well done given ZS's overall plan. Also, it plugs into a Justice League comic book story where all the Justice Leaguers are getting murdered, and it turns out that someone hacked Batman's contingency plans should they ever go rogue.
5) James Gunn's Superman is in part a direct refutation of ZS's Superman movies. It's like a cinematic debate society!

This is true, and if you pay attention, the beginning and end of each sentence in those scenes is pretty much unimportant so the actors can talk over each other without making important dialog impossible to understand. It is very well done.

He's done some pretty hilarious straight faced comedy before, short bits. He can pull it off, its mainly up to the writers some of which I have no faith in, but the trailers look good.

I liked the bit Neeson put out asking people to watch the movie, not because of him but because comedy in film is almost dead and people need to support it.

Not sure about the issue here. Let's say there was some there there regarding Trump and Epstein. Biden had the information all along, and had a chance to use it to derail Trump during the primaries and didn't. Failing that, he could have used it after the GOP nomination (and the hit on Trump failed a few days earlier), but didn't. Failing THAT, he could have handed it off to Kamala before leaving the scene and had HER use it, but didn't. Assuming that that ticking time bomb existed and wasn't used before Nov 2024, when would be the best time to derail Trump after that? 19 Jan 2025 - and it didn't come out even then.

If the compromat existed, it would have been used. It wasn't, so it doesn't exist.

although not quite the same thing, my favorite story from the old Soviet Union was the submariner who stuck his hand inside a nuclear reactor to rearrange the rods and stopped it from going critical, which would have killed the entire crew. It worked, but he died within a few minutes .

The guy really did do a Spock, in real life. And saved his entire crew.
