Columbia Finally Suspends "Students" Involved in Library Putsch

Justice delayed is justice denied.

This is about a terrorist "library takeover" that happened in May 2024.

The students took over the library, chanting antisemitic, pro-terrorist chants.

Campus security, Sexton says, did something smart: They locked the radicals in the library. They told them they could leave... but only if they presented student IDs so that they could be identified for possible future discipline.

The terrorists refused and attempted to barricade themselves in the library to avoid accountability. When the police were called, they attempted to violently ram their way past campus security and the police.

80 were arrested -- but Columbia refused to actually discipline the Hitler Youth.

Until now -- while being pressured by Trump to crack down on violent antisemitic pro-terrorist college radicals.

From the NY Post:

More than 70 students are set to be punished for their involvement in the hugely disruptive Butler Library chaos that unfolded on May 7, as well as the encampment that popped up on the Morningside Heights campus in spring 2024, sources familiar with the disciplinary action said.

Roughly two-thirds of those will be hit with suspensions between one and three years, with the majority being hit with two-year suspensions, the sources said.

Those involved were informed of their punishments on Monday following a probe by the elite school's University Judicial Board.

Sexton's post has the videos of the putsch.

78 CHOP in Seattle remains my favorite take over, so far!

They had a board meeting that went haywire on live tv and I laughed my arse off. There was closed captioning that added to the insanity. Granted, the mics were bad, along with everything else. There were signs around the tents and little weird veg gardens. I think one garden had a pineapple stuck in the ground. Someone sarcastic reported and I read his stuff. I wish I had saved it.

The meeting was for election of officers. This led to fighting over the mic, if I recall. I was laughing a lot. Some people, randos, would talk in the mic. One Native American talked of her dead sister, which is sad (I am not heartless!). I did, however, bust out laughing as her name, on the translation by cc was, "My Pretty Pony."

I lost my mind at this point and my husband arrived to ask wth I was doing. I laugh loudly and with no restraint. I try to control myself when appropriate, but there's no promises made. My family know this. Some people I can't sit next to at funerals, etc.

A 2-year absence from the networking scene is a huge punishment. These brats will lose their dorms, their cafeteria passes, library passes, the whole bit. If the suspension includes banning them from the campus itself, they're really cooked. They can skulk around in coffee shops if their parents can afford to keep them in apartments in NYC (!) or they can go home to whatever commie suburb bred them and try to feel hip and relevant.

Blue slips do not apply to DA nominations, only judges. Habba was nearing the end of her 120 days in office as temporary appointment and her nomination has not yet been approved by the Senate. That is why Trump wants the Senate to stay in session during at least part of August to deal with nominations. Dems are slow rolling every single Trump nominations for everthing which takes up time. That being said, minor nominees are now being considered which they vote on them as a group, not so much as individuals under an expedited and lesser debate required for Cabinet posts or other high ranking judicial nominations.

Amusing. The federal constitution is silent as to federal districts or even whether those districts have to coincide with state lines. All of that comes from the Federal Judiciary Act of 1789 and its successors.

The very old Stuart v. Laird case (1802) suggests that you could be correct. Jefferson's party in Congress got rid of the additional federal judge positions authorized in the Judiciary Act of 1800 and replaced that with the Judiciary Act of 1801 that removed the positions. Lawsuit ensued, Marshall court ruled that Congress could do that.

Coincidentally, that removal led to Marbury's lawsuit as well as some of the positions were Justice of the Peace offices in DC.

I took a gap year (to work to pay for school) and it was a huge setback. But I had a serious program and missing a year made me lose continuity of core classes as well as my contacts and friends.

For these kids they will return and be campus "leaders." They will get special treatment from profs and make even more contacts. And losing momentum is meaningless when they are learning shit that is all made up nonsense and it changes every year anyway.

Lavoisier Library at the DuPont Experimental Station eliminated a substantial portion of their book and journal collections back in the early 2010s. I have no idea for what purpose that space is now being used.

160 Coincidentally, that removal led to Marbury's lawsuit as well as some of the positions were Justice of the Peace offices in DC.

Yes, but we know it's a mute, er moo, er moot point because CONgress will never do it. No matter how justified.

161 Most of the space has been turned into individual or collaborative study spaces for students. Lots of computers and places for laptops as well as whiteboards all over the place.

162 Won't matter in activist circles but due to declining government grants, etc. those positions may be less available in two years or more time.

164 And our library ended up getting rid of professor study carrels to make more room for students to socialize and study.

Carrels made it easier to keep books at the library for research projects instead of lugging them back and forth to office and home.
Posted by: whig at July 22, 2025 06:45 PM (ctrM5)

At one school, grad students had keys for carrels, and for the same reason.

I used them when available because they were quiet and you could kind of spread out the books/materials while you worked; this was B.C., before computers.

165 Robot and Frank is an utterly delightful sci-fi indie film, highly recommend. Old man uses his robot companion to do a heist of the library to get an old copy of Don Quixote. They are scrapping libraries in the future to make it a community center.

I hoped that its prediction of libraries was a ridiculous premise! But here we are.

Our local library tries to have all these teen spaces and they just go to the library to game on the computers, it seems like. Meanwhile, libraries are canceling digital book check out apps like hoopla because it's too expensive.

Their whole purpose, to provide book access, and they are cancelling hoopla. (To be fair, the hoopla business platform is nutso and I get why it's unaffordable. I hate how expensive digital books are. They shouldn't be.)

=============

Go back to what I said. The loss has nothing to do with education. The momentum they will lose is social and political, not educational. The activist teachers will have a whole new promising group of young snot-noses to work with. It has nothing to do with learning.

174 "disagree, drawing different conclusions from the same facts."

Hard to disagree with that perspective. My own experience warns me that those two years will be filled with tempting alternatives that will remove them from the paths that lead back to University. I wish I had the patience to track what percentage make it back in two years.
