Howdy Hordelings! The time for the Monday ONT is now. Regulars - you know what to do. Lurkers - don't be scared to jump on into the world of commenting. Shall we step on in?

Quotes of the day

"We wanted to send a powerful message and I think that’s what we did. I think it’s just getting what we deserve, I think sometimes people don’t understand what it is we’re asking for. We’re going to get what we deserve, and we’re standing on business. We’re asking for what we deserve, you’ll see. We just want a piece of our pie."
Minnesota Lynx guard Courtney Williams

"The WNBA loses $50 million every year and has NEVER generated a profit. You deserve $0.00."

The Latest Buzz

Scientists Create World’s First Cyborg Bee with Ultra-Light Brain Controller

doof-cyborg-bee.jpg

Scientists at the Beijing Institute of Technology used a 74-milligram insect brain controller to create the world’s first cyborg bee.

Worker bees can carry nectar sacks weighing about 80 per cent of their body mass for 5 km (3 miles) without resting, so they have no problem carrying a 74-milligram brain controller developed by Chinese researchers. The ultra-light device can be strapped to the bee’s back and connected to its brain via three tiny needles, allowing humans to control the movements of the insect. The controller uses low-intensity electric impulses to input the insect’s movements, making it turn left, turn right, advance, or turn back, depending on the situation. According to Professor Zhao Jieliang, in the tests performed by his team so far, the bees obeyed their commands 9 times out of 10.

***

“In future research, precision and repeatability of insect behaviour control will be enhanced by optimising stimulation signals and control techniques,” Chinese researchers wrote. “Concurrently expanding functional modules of the control backpack will improve environmental perception capabilities of insect-based robots, advancing their deployment in complex operational settings such as reconnaissance and detection missions.”

Read the whole thing. Kinda cool, but also kinda creepy.

Good advice even if you're only 29

Walking Slightly Faster Can Help Seniors Stay Active Longer

Walking just slightly faster helps older people stay active for longer, and stave off frailty.

Taking just 14 steps per minute more than their usual pace led to “meaningful” improvements in physical well-being for seniors who were frail or at risk of becoming frail, according to new findings.

The research team explained that frailty is a medically defined condition in older people that increases vulnerability to everyday stresses, leading to a higher risk of falls, hospitalization, and loss of independence.

Warning signs of frailty include 1) unintentional weight loss, 2) moving slowly, 3) feeling weak, 4) persistent tiredness and 5) low levels of physical activity.

Because most of these signs have a direct link to how active someone is, scientists say walking is a particularly effective way for older people to improve their overall health and quality of life, and maintain their independence longer.

But the question had remained until now: how fast do they need to walk to see real benefits.

Check out the whole thing to find out!

Less than 6 months Uncle missed a payment so Grandpa took the car, parked it in one of his barns until the good for nothing son would catch up on the payments... Uncle never did.
Twenty years later my dad bought it.
Had several inches of chicken shit on it...

Nothing left in a real barn for years will be covered in chicken shit, filled with rodent nests, and bee nests.

147 “ ….but with the compressors. You'd think they'd remember how to make a durable compressor.”
———

What was particularly offensive was the assertion that vintage refrigerators are some sort of energy hog compared with “Energy Star” compliant chinesium units.

It was flat out lie. You can see this for yourself, don’t take my word for it. Don’t guess - measure. A nifty little device called a kill-a-watt meter will show you exactly what the electricity consumption rate of any device in your home is. You can even input the kWh rate and it will show the $$ rate annually.

Certainly styles change - it might not be realistic to keep a 1958 Philco in the kitchen. Don’t throw it out - put it in the garage or basement for soda or something, they work well, quiet, and I betcha your POS 2023 unit won’t last 70 years.

Our betters want people to borrow $900 at 9% interest to buy a POS appliance that will fail in less than 5 years to “save” $20 annually, after throwing away the Amana. (There is a steady demand for vintage washers and dryers, and all sorts of things, that aren’t made of scheisse components and materials).

Connie Mack proposed the DH back in the 1910s. He didn't want his pitchers to get hurt batting or running bases. It was nearly adopted in the 1930s.

It used to be that a team had a regular DH like they had a regular shortstop. Nowadays it's a way of giving a position player a night off but keeping his bat.

I was just pondering the enormity of it all, and how short-lived and little we are. Betelgeuse is very young, only around 10 million years old. It didn't exist at the time of the dinosaurs. It's a stellar flash in the pan on astronomical and geological time scales.

It was the late Miocene when Betelgeuse first appeared. Massive stars like this are short fused. Bright and fast. Orion wouldn't have existed as we know it today. Rigel is a bit younger, and wouldn't have been there. Bellatrix and Saiph would likely be there. The belt wouldn't have existed. Might have been something sort of fuzzy visible in the belt area.

At that time, Greenland was ice free, with summer temps reaching maybe 60F or so.

Ignoring the results coming from their personal issues, what they were was the final evolution of the linear rock path that started with the Yardbirds and ended with the rise of Nirvana. Rose and Cobain both at least subconsciously realized this which is why they instinctively hated each other. Apparently very early Rose wanted Nirvana to open for them and Nirvana said no. It would have been interesting to see how the crowd would have reacted...

261 Yeah, ok, space aliens arrive, and are about to consider whether they do the "first contact thing" or decide on conquest for resources and slave labor.

Then they watch those lunatics in Alaska firing a School Bus off a cliff. Take a few seconds to consider the situation.

There is not even an accepted theory of the possibility that anything can travel FTL much less human travel.

There is a rejected theory of particles called tacrons or something like that traveling faster than light but again rejected by most of the scientific community.

Now I’ve lived a few spots around the west. With the exception of Carlisle Pennsylvania I could live happily in most of them. Catholic Charities ceased to be Catholic about 40 years ago. They still beg for donations at Mass, but nobody I know supports them. They are run by non-Catholics for their own benefit, and apparently to collect USAID cash. I wouldn't ask them for a handout in a million years.

I have no idea why the USCCB allows them to be called Catholic anymore, except that USCCB isn't particularly Catholic anymore, either.

Just like HIAS ceased to be anything Jewish for decades.

I recall the great work they did with help Soviet Jews who got out from behind the Iron Curtain start anew. That was then.

Even the ADL, which was never particularly Jewish per se, was much more reasonable and level headed way back when.

All of these institutions were invaded and usurped over the years. Need to follow the money. The plan seems pure Soros.
