Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - July 23, 2025 [TRex]

20250720-20250715-IMG_20250715_185411807.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

While Ozzy is gone, be thankful that his passing purged our collective social media streams of Coldplay memes and comments.

Sorry, Alamo museum. You have one job - and that doesn't involve Pee-wee or his big adventure.

The Alamo acquires original bike from "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" Pee-wee Hermann's bike will be permanently displayed in the Alamo Visitor Center and Museum when it opens in 2027.

The bike went up for auction in May. It was sold to a private collector for $125,000, though it was originally expected to sell for between $30,000 and $60,000.

I don't care if there is a basement joke involved. Get off my lawn.

On the other hand, Phil Collins is a well-known Alamo collector and honorary Texan. Unfortunately, he's taken ribbing and disdain from the media and others at times (like Rolling Stone - shocker!) for his Alamo hobby.

Come and Take a Look at Me Now - written in 2012 before he donated his massive collection of over 400 artifacts to the Alamo museum

"We'd sit in Jim's shop, and he'd say, 'You know, nobody's ever dug here. They put electricity in and some sewer lines, but there was never a proper dig.' And it's just across from the north wall, the site of the bloodiest fighting. Well, Jim only rented the space, so I made arrangements to get him the building."

"Wait, wait, wait," I interrupted. "You 'made some arrangements'?"

"Well, I gave him the money to buy it. And then we dug-"

"Wait, wait, wait. You 'dug'? You mean you just put up a Closed sign and dug through the floor?"

"Exactly. We boarded up the place, moved his shop next door, and started digging. And we found loads of stuff! Flattened cannonballs that had bounced off the wall, cannon handles, personal effects like buttons and buckles, knives, hundreds of horseshoes."

Generosity Beyond Compare

Collins fell in love with the Alamo's inspiring story as a 5-year-old boy, when he saw the Disney production of Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. When other children were out playing cops and robbers or other childhood games, Collins says that he was re-enacting the Battle of the Alamo.

Facepalm:

California legislation would fine stores for theft of their shopping carts

Under current law, cities can only charge businesses $50 for each shopping cart found and retrieved by the city off of the businesses' property after the first three violations within a six-month period, or for failing to pick up retrieved carts within three business days.

Shopping carts also currently have to be held for 30 days before the city disposes of them, which bill author state Sen. Dave Cortese, D-San Jose, said creates a nuisance for cities. Cortese's bill would authorize cities to return the carts to businesses, and charge the businesses up to $500 for the service of returning each cart and up to an additional $150 in fines.

ONT request: the Horde knows many things, so let's try a question. Are there credible resources available that compare the brands of gasoline? We all have our favorite brands, but my sense is that most people buy gas based on price and convenience.

But is the Shell Super V-power really any different than the Bucee's premium or Costco/Kirkland gas? Setting aside differences of octane, individual state regulations (thank you California) or seasonal blends, is there really any difference between gasoline brands?

There is a thing called Top Tier" gas which involves added detergents and additives. That criteria at least makes a difference between "Top Tier" brands and other brands.

Found this which is modestly helpful but doesn't answer all the questions.Top Tier Gasoline Is Worth the Extra Price, Study Shows For what its worth, Costco shows as Top Tier gas but not Bucee's or Love's.

But is there really a difference between "Top Tier" brands?

Are there good interweb resources?

I can't believe that I just learned this bit of historical trivia: Dr. Seuss (aka Theodore Geisel) wrote "Green Eggs and Ham" on $50 bet with his publisher to write a book using 50 or fewer unique words. His publisher never paid, but "Green Eggs and Ham" became the best selling Dr. Seuss book. Source

Geisel's first successful children's book, Cat in the Hat, also was the result of a challenge to write a book in under a certain number of words.

At the time, children were reading primers like "Fun with Dick and Jane," which are anything but fun and don't inspire kids to want to read outside of what they are required.

As a response to this, William Spaulding, director of Houghton Mifflin's educational division, challenged Geisel to "write a story that first-graders can't put down" and asked that it be limited to 225 distinct words from a list of 348 words that were selected from a standard first grader's vocabulary list.

Geisel nearly succeeded, using 236 unique words in the story, though the endeavor took him nine months largely due to the word restriction.

The original story itself was supposed to be about a King cat and a Queen cat, but "queen" wasn't on the list of acceptable words. Geisel then looked through the list of words and spotted "hat," which obviously rhymed with "cat," so decided to make a story out of that instead.

20250723-GermanEggs.jpg

Bonus trivia:

Geisel first used the pen name "Seuss" in college after being removed as the editor of the Dartmouth College's humor magazine "Jack-O-Lantern" and being banned from writing for that magazine due to being caught drinking by the dean in 1925. He subsequently started publishing under various pen names, including T. Seuss. Two years later, he adopted "Dr. Theophrastus Seuss," which subsequently was shortened to "Dr. Seuss" by 1928.

Along with advertising and writing children's books, Geisel also wrote over 400 political cartoons, between 1941 and 1943 while working for the New York City daily newspaper.

I don't *think* this is a bit but not entirely sure:

Women's Pro Baseball League to hold tryouts at Nationals Park

The Women's Professional Baseball League will hold tryouts next month at the Washington Nationals' home ballpark as it moves closer to its launch.

The league is aiming to play its first season with six teams starting in spring 2026. The tryouts, which will be held Aug. 22-25, will determine the 150 players who will be invited to the league's draft in October.

As it nears its launch, the WPBL has already struck a media deal with Fremantle, the production company behind shows like "The Price Is Right" and "Family Feud," and brought in global women's sports investor Assia Grazioli-Venier as its chair.

As a Yinzer, I have to admit that they can't be worse than the Pirates...

34 On the quality of gas, great question, OB.

My brother works at Intertek, a test lab in San Antonio. He has built a career testing internal combustion engine fuels and lubricants, primarily for Ford and GM but for virtually all major makes. There most definitely IS a difference in gasoline quality. All the name brands are of similar, superior quality, whether its Chevron, Exxon, Shell, BP, etc. Still quality but lower level are Valero, Unocal, etc.

The discount, no name, and big box stations (Murphy USA, Kirkland, etc) are low quality. When my brother wants to "dirty up an engine" he'll have one of the techs fill a truck up at Costco or Walmart. If he wants to clog a fuel filter and screw up the injectors, he'll send it to a shabby corner station dealing more in meth and liquor than gasoline. It really does make a very substantial difference. He strongly recommends buying from the "majors."

In many cases, all the brands of gasoline for a given region will come from the same refinery. The trucker might pour a pint of additive concentrate into the tanker before taking on a load.

Gasoline is a commodity. Shop by price, when you can. Modern cars can all "tune" themselves to accept whatever gasoline is fed to them, within limits.

87 I use Exxon E10 gas because I have a credit card with them that gives me .10/gal. off. Same with Shell. I use whichever is cheaper at the time.

Naturally I prefer E0 gas for better mileage. There are unbranded convenience stores which offer it at around $3, and the Exxon I go to most often has 87 E0 right there at the same pump, for (right now) about .70 more a gallon.

I know one or two Walmarts which offer a premium (93 octane) E0 for about the same price as the Exxon. That'd be great if I still had a car that needs 91 or higher; the Buick does not.

98 As I understand it, all base gas is the same. What's in the Shell station's tanks may have come from a Chevron refinery. But when the fuel is downloaded, the operator adds the Shell additives to it.

Thus, any of the name brands are probably going to be fine if you choose the right octane for your car . . . and even if you don't, as the car will change tune to match the fuel and keep the engine from knocking. You lose power putting 87 in a car that needs premium, but it will not be damaged, at least not for years.

Hey, you bought the premium-eating car for performance. Shell out the extra $1/gallon to get what you paid for.

All cities with a "homeless" problem should have a designated "bum-basher" squad in the city cops. They spot a bum pushing his/her shit around in a stolen shopping cart, they upend the cart right on the street, dumping out the bum's shit, hang a minor beating on the bum, and throw the cart into the back of their pickup, and return it to the store, and collect five bucks from the store for the service.

111 Most gas brands don’t refine or ‘make’ their own gas. Exxon is one of the few that do. Most gas stations get their gas from the regional refineries, which may include Exxon.

So stations like Costco are getting their gas from exactly the same place as most other major gas stations.

I’m willing to bet there is less difference in quality between brands of gas than there is between gas stations selling the same brand, due to differences in age and quality of the underground tanks and other infrastructure.

I've been told that the tanks and pumps of the Exxon convenience store I go to most often are antiquated and need replacing. But I remember when that store opened, about ten years ago now. Do gas pumps age that fast?

Of course the current store stands across the side street from its original, smaller location. Some of those pumps may be from that older installation and might have a lot more time on them.

Later in the afternoon, he took my sister to a few food banks. He added everything he picked up (which my sister thought was for him and his wife) to what my sister had already collected, so we're now well-stocked on food. A few of my sister's coworkers have also given her some food.

We have a lot of support. Our neighbor is a true blessing; he considers us like his own children.

The denials coming out seem rather tepid, boilerplate. I know if I was accused of such things, as Tulsi was, I be screaming about the injustice, the bullshit of it all. Just like Tulsi did when she found out about 'Quiet Skies' and her entry into its database.

But the Media are doing there part, ignoring the meat of the story: The Real 'Russian' Collusion and everything thereafter. 2 impeachments. An arrest with mug shot. 4 trials. An assassination attempt or two.

This whole thing is like reading a Robert Ludlum spy thriller. But just real life.

The Ranger said something like 'we'll just put in a quarter charge; wouldn't want to hit those apartments over there' (about 3-400 yards away, to my memory, so I guess he had it ranged). He loaded a shot and fired away. BOOM! And a cloud of smoke. I could watch the canonball fly its high arc. It was wild. I can't imagine they do that anymore; we just can't have nice things.

219 Typically impossible to get the latest/most accurate info.

But - saw something about a "pause" (the word "stay" was not used) on the release order for "Maryland trash". And that he remained in the custody of US Marshals.

I think the actual issue here - and it's enormous and so far there's no sign it will be addressed - is the complete and formal lawlessness of the federal judiciary. This is one of several cases where the most basic consideration - jurisdiction - is being ignored.

The law specifically and clearly excludes district courts from any jurisdiction in matters where they have been "ruling" for months now. Fundamental lawlessness. And it's being indulged, not immediately countered. This is a gigantic ratchet turn. Anyone who's serious and thinking beyond a year or two realizes it.

222 I’ve supported Netanyahu as much as anyone, but I admit he has made great mistakes over the last two years and very unnecessarily prolonged the war by dicking around with endless negotiations.

On the other hand, any other Israeli politician who had any realistic chance of being PM would have surrendered long ago.

So I would say yes there’s a lot to dislike about him; but also, because of Israel’s warped and dysfunctional political culture, he had been and still is the best of a lot of bad options.

223 For my 6th grade Safety Patrol trip they took us on a river tour of the Cuyahoga aboard the Goodtime II. It was fantastic; all the steel mills going full tilt blasting smoke, steam, fire and noise, the locomotives pushing bottle cars and slag buckets all over the place, and draw bridges for train tracks. You could feel the American industrial muscle.

Mostly all gone now.

So the plenary discretion of the Secretary of State in matters of this sort, unambiguous and clearly established in the law ...... just disappeared.

Complying with a lawless judiciary is as grave a violation of one's oath as is possible. Mumbling about letting the process "work" is the sort of cowardice, weakness, and/or dishonesty that has brought the country to its largely post-constitutional condition.

Shell V power is the shit. Friends in the muscle car circles would constantly preach to me about that stuff. Oh you gotta try it, oh this, oh that. Ok, I stuck it in the '69 roadrunner. Holy shit, a few miles down the road and I could tell how different the car ran. Then I drove my mazda 6 to the texas MoMe. Usually my range says 475 miles after I fill up and it pulls a solid 30-32 around town running with the AC on, etc. V Power at the time was $3.50, and halfway through the trip to texas I was seeing for $2.50-2.60. I started using it. A few stops later my range was saying 525 miles, and I was pulling 37mpg, and it ran killer. Definitely something going on with that gas.

We're going to be under another high, with mid-level warmth (I'm reading too much of the GSP NWS forecast discussions), which will give a dreaded capping effect. 248 Yep, Long Memory is correct. Begging the arrogant, lawless, clueless courts to follow the law guarantees more of the same. SCOTUS is a farce in various ways, and now they've added lawless chaos *within their own made-up world*, even on the most basic operational issue of jurisdiction. Comical. A 5-4 decision with mewling crap from Barrett or Kavanaugh will do nothing to repair the disassembly of the constitution.

The circuits - not just the districts - already treat SCOTUS rulings as toilet paper any time they wish (see virtually all 2A issues).

Repudiation, followed by a fizzled attempt at impeachment, will be decisive. Appeasement, which is the only reaction the legal cult can imagine (thus their disastrous impact on the nation), guarantees more of the same, and likely even more brazen.

Well, I hit a minor snag today, trying to set the input drum assembly into the front planetary. There are 5 clutch plates inside the drum that have to engage the slots on the hub of the front planetary. The clearances are very tight. I have gotten 2 or 3 of the plates engaged, and then it hangs up. I even used a dummy hub from a parts transmission to align and center the plates, to no avail. There does not seem to be an easy answer. The youtube experts just say, "keep trying". I am thinking maybe I will remove the hub, which is quite easy, and use a Dremel tool to ever so slightly chamfer the leading edges of the slots on the hub. Basically just take off any burrs or sharp edges.
