Eric Blade says that the hot new fake video is "Barn Finds," where people pretend to discover treasures in barns. I think he's probably right. Sorry about that, I didn't know about the Hot New Fake Video trend.
I didn't know those videos were "a thing". I knew it was sus though when the tires and rubber gaskets were all intact. Those petroleum polymers do not age well. Posted by: AnonyBotymousDrivel at July 21, 2025 07:34 PM (gLikB) Posted by: sock_rat_eez at July 21, 2025 07:34 PM (dKEEs) 6

Those vids always amused me. Cars that are worth silly, super silly money that have been actively hunted for 50 years always seem to just pop up in a barn, as if the owners lived in a cave and had no clue of it's value. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at July 21, 2025 07:38 PM (snZF9) 15

Its usually granny's corvair, or aunt haggie's amc pacer, or some other sentimental thing that sits out of sight out of mind. Occasionally you do find a hunted car here and there that somebody had dreams of restoring and finally decides to let it go, but they know what they have. I know of a '67 camaro like that. Original owner still, and its sitting under a tarp in a back yard. It was restored once years ago. Me thinks it's going to need another round at this point. A long long time ago I went with my dad to a huge old barn full old cars to find a part for his 356. I was maybe 16 at the time. There were a lot of cars, 50 or more, and tons of parts. I remember seeing the rear half of a 65 Corvette sitting on the ground, and a Stanley Steamer that looked like it had been sitting there since 1927. Odd sports cars and run of the mill Dodges and Ford's and such. I've sometimes wondered what happened to that collection. The place was so dilapidated at the time it would have collapsed by now.

Their most famous one was finding Aerosmith's first tour van . Posted by: polynikes at July 21, 2025 07:43 PM (VofaG) One house in New Jersey that Mike & Danielle went to a few years back had two DeLoreans in the garages. Mike ended up buying the one that was in rougher shape, but the couple who had bought the estate and were remodeling the place kept the other one which was in decent enough shape for them to test drive it. I made a real barn find. Visiting a man's barn as a lad in 1978 with my father who was buying some tack (saddles, etc.), I spotted a car shape under a tarp. It was the man's father's 1965 Porsche 356 Super 90 cabriolet. It was in rough shape, but no rust. My father, a Porsche guy from way back, offered $500 on the spot. It was accepted. We towed it home, me pulling it with our F-250 stake truck. My father spent a year restoring it and sold it to a young Asian guy from San Francisco for $10k. That car is worth $200k or more today.

My grandpa had an old Ford Model 'C' in one of the chicken coops that flowed to me and my sibs after he and Grammi passed. We decided to sell it - it had been restored once before.
I put a call in to the Ford Museum in Dearborn. When I told the guy at Ford I had a Model 'C' he said "No you don't" and we went back and forth a bit. Finally he said something like - Well Mr. Smartass, what's the serial number? I told him I couldn't find a SN anywhere but it had 'xx' stamped on the flywheel. He told me to talk to no one and he'd be there in 12 hours. He was. Posted by: Tonypete at July 21, 2025 08:00 PM (cYBz/) 43

The thrust bearing movie video on the Gun Thread last night reminded me of my poor old Simca, that met it's demise with a thrust bearing pounded wafer-thin. That's the kind of car you might find in a barn and leave there.

My barn find was a 1971 Scout rolling down the freeway with a for sale sign in the window. I chased the guy down and followed him home. It was a little tense when I jumped out of my car and ran up his driveway asking "how much?" I bought it on the spot and got a boat as part of the deal. The reason it was being sold is his wife and daughters refused to be seen in it.

I don't know if it'd be considered a barn find, but Mike Wolfe went absolutely nuts digging in some lady's backyard because he'd been told by the grandchild of the family that lived at the house back in the day that his grandfather had buried his very early Indian motorcycle in the backyard when the grandmother told him he couldn't ride it anymore.
It was like a family legend. Mike paid the lady that lived there to tear up her yard and he'd get landscapers out to fix everything after they were done. They spent all day and into the night with shovels and flashlights before they finally found the rusted, deteriorated, pieces & parts of this bike. Wolfe then took it back to Iowa and had his welder-Mr-Fix-It put it every part together on a stand to try and get it back to a "bike" shape. I don't know what he ended up getting for it, if anything, but it surely wasn't as much as he put in to getting the thing. Posted by: SpeakingOf at July 21, 2025 08:13 PM (6ydKt) 62

The other was found by one of the guys at the airport. It was a Canadian Hawker Hurricane. He found it in a barn in Alberta, hauled it to his shop and took almost two years rebuilding it. He was about 80% done when the company filming The Battle of Britain heard about it. They paid to finish the rebuild if they could use it in the movie. A beautiful airplane.
Posted by: SpeakingOf at July 21, 2025 08:13 PM (6ydKt) I remember that. Another amazing astronomical discovery announced today. Betelgeuse has a companion. It's a binary, Jim. The companion is a 1.5 solar mass, young stellar object that hasn't yet initiated fusion. It and Betelgeuse formed at the same time, but since Betelgeuse is so much more massive, it has a very short lifetime, only about 10 million years. The companion would become an A or B blue star, if had time. It's orbiting inside Betelgeuse's outer atmosphere, and the drag is going to spiral it in about 10K years. So Betelgeuse is going to eat its little brother. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at July 21, 2025 08:51 PM (w6EFb) 125

Speaking of incredible stories of survival - Hawker Hurricane Mk I R4118.
There are only two Hurricanes left that participated in the historic Battle of Britain. One is on static display and will never fly again. Then there is R4118. After the Battle of Britain where five enemy planes fell victim to its .303 machine guns, the plane was used as a trainer for the next several years and several more accidents. After its last rebuild it and many other Hurricanes were crated up in 1944 and shipped to India to once again act as trainers. Once they arrived it was determined they were surplus and left crated. After the war all but R4118 were dumped in the Bay of Bengal. R4118 went to a technical college where it sat for decades until it was found again. After years of negotiations, it was brought back to England for restoration. The DeHavilland propellor was beyond salvage and another was not available, so a Rotol was fitted. Key structural parts were too far gone and had to be recreated; it took Krupp in Germany many tries to recreate the nickel-steel. It is still fitted with a Merlin III and has kept a 12V electrical system. So now UP - W, R4118, is a flying piece of history. Posted by: Anna Puma at July 21, 2025 08:54 PM (UNuW6) 128

As he comes from a liberal tradition, he's more interested in ideological purity, it seems. But you're always going to have the fringe--or at least the advocates of things you don't agree with. For the most part you examine how likely they are to take over the political side. And I say, not much. Of course, if people didn't invest so much in the fiction called "The Right" they wouldn't be surprised to find that people can want to resist Marxism and it's offshoots AND they don't agree with you on what else they want done. The left is the left, because they're Marxists. But saying that other socialists who just like the State more are "rightists", is silly. Posted by: Axeman at July 21, 2025 08:55 PM (krQz2) 129

My conclusion is that DNI Tulsi Gabbard is running for president in 2028, and if she achieves actual arrests and prosecutions of these traitors, she will likely WIN the presidency, because the No. 1 thing that most Americans want right now is something, anything, resembling accountability (and consequences) for the traitors and saboteurs who deliberately tried to wreck this country. I don' know what's true. I am seeing videos claiming China is forcing everyone to go to CBDC unannounced. No warning. Soldiers emptied all the atms and banks. Shops no longer accept cash. How to confirm?

Jeff Daniels played General Chamberlain in 'Gettysburg'. He did a fine job. I just assume most entertainers are slightly too the right of Stalin. Saves time.

Colonel Chamberlain in Gettysburg.
Posted by: Pug Mahon, I Have Become Comfortably Lame at July 21, 2025 09:46 PM (0aYVJ) Didn't he do George Washington, too, in a tv movie? I think actors believe their roles give them gravitas. Posted by: RickZ at July 21, 2025 09:48 PM (gKDq2) 198
Wow, aside from Gettysburg, he was in a lot of nothing.

Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at July 21, 2025 09:53 PM (/lPRQ) What he is describing does not sound like a run on the banks per se. It is forced seizure of hard currency by the government to prevent a run. I've come across the first LLM that I can legitimately say is out of it's mind.
Starcoder will not do what you ask it to do, it will tell you it's name is Christopher, it's 36 and it likes to code. Only if you ask it to produce C++, it will produce python, if you ask it to correct the syntax of Ruby, it will correct it in PHP. If you ask it's hallucinating, it will respond: Maybe. Truly wacky stuff. Posted by: Thomas Bender at July 21, 2025 10:04 PM (XV/Pl) 218
China is in a weird no man's land between Capitalism and Communism.
I don't think even they know what they are. I see youtubes of people in Chinese cities walking around in western style clothes and booty shorts and pink and blonde hair with stores having English signs. I don't know what the fuck is going on in China. Posted by: eleven at July 21, 2025 10:05 PM (fV+MH) 219
