Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: It’s Been a Tough Month for the Left-Wing Education EstablishmentThe various bloated bureaucracies that incorporate the name “Education” into their organizations are having a bad couple of weeks. After decades of broken promises from establishment Republicans to eliminate the Department of Education, President Trump is actually moving forward and doing so…with the Supreme Court’s blessing. About 1,300 public servants in the department are being let go, and this is just the start. This is a beautiful headline I thought I’d never live to see. “Supreme Court says Trump's efforts to close the Education Department can continue” [NPR – 7/14/2025]The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that it would allow the Trump administration to resume dismantling the U.S. Department of Education. And once again, although we always heard Republicans such as Bush/Cheney/Ryan/Romney campaign on cutting the Department of Education, they never did a thing toward that goal while in office. But now it is Donald Trump who is actually doing it. Coincidentally, the “true conservatives” in legacy “Conservative, Inc” media outlets continue to slander Trump as being “not a conservative.” They continue to hold out hope for another Bush or Cheney to bring back their preferred version of polite conservatism, which is really just capitulation to the left. Aside from the Department of Education, there is more good news. MAGA conservatives in Congress are introducing a bill to revoke the National Education Association’s charter. The NEA is the largest labor union in the U.S. “Republican lawmakers to introduce bill to repeal largest teachers union's federal charter” [Fox News – 7/15/2025] North Carolina Rep. Mark Harris and Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn revealed on Tuesday in The Daily Caller that they will each introduce the National Education Association Charter Repeal Act in their respective chambers. The bill aims to revoke the federal charter for the largest teachers’ union in the country.Speaking of teacher’s unions, the president of the politically strident American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten, took the opportunity on July 4th to showcase her inability to handle elementary-level spelling and grammar. She first posted this amazing tweet, and apparently tried to edit it several times before finally giving up and deleting it. Her tweet read: “Hoping this 4rth of July the sun starts peaking thru again” In just eleven words there were three misspellings, as well as an absence of any punctuation.
Ms. Weingarten eventually settled on this tweet, which as of now is still posted at Twitter, but she apparently gave up on trying to figure out how to spell “4th” correctly: With a few exceptions, my teachers in the 1970s and ‘80s were exceptional instructors who were deserving of the respect and admiration that was given to teachers back then. I knew nothing about their personal lives, nor did they discuss them. It really saddens me what has happened in the ensuing decades. Back then, teachers taught, students learned, and the only flags displayed in our classrooms were the state flag and American flag. @Buck: Similar experience here with my teachers. They stayed out of your personal life, and they didn't foist theirs on you. They dressed well, showed up on time, and did their job. Much respect.
I look at what's there now that the kids are placed in close proximity to, and ... oy vey. And what's with this sending kids up to the next grade when it's obvious they didn't learn what they needed to in the current grade? When did "Hold them back because they failed" stop being a thing? All you get at the end is someone who is so horribly steeped in failure and shame that it's tough to get them to ever want to learn again. Man things have become crazy... TRUMP’S ALLEGED EPSTEIN BDAY LETTER: The Wall Street Journal reporter who broke the “blockbuster” story alleging a letter Trump wrote to Epstein for his 50th birthday included some tawdry elements previously worked for Main Justice (his only prior reporting experience listed in his bio).
Main Justice was Glenn Simpson’s wife’s publication. Simpson founded Fusion GPS, which was paid by Hillary Clinton/the DNC (through Perkins Coie) to produce the Steele Dossier at the center of the Russian hoax against Trump. Both Glenn Simpson and his wife, Mary Jacoby, worked for the Wall Street Journal before launching their own enterprises. Trump is now suing the Wall Street Journal over the “blockbuster” letter story, arguing that it’s bogus and they never showed him it so he could comment. History teacher in 10th grade. Broke down the cause of WW1 in really interesting ways. Kept me engaged. I learned a ton that year. I’m sure these two teachers don’t exist in today’s era. But "4rth" is right out. That's only two characters short of spelling it out: "fourth". Pretty lame abbreviation. Recently, nine underage girls were sexually harassed by a group of Syrian men at an outdoor swimming pool in Geinhausen, Germany.Shocking, isn’t it? I wish it was. The men touched the young victims’ hair, thighs, and breasts while they were in the water.Incredibly, the mayor of Gelnhausen, Christian Litzinger of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, attributed the assaults to "high temperatures" causing the migrants' tempers to flare. Yes, still some good ones, but the bad ones are so much worse than anything we've had to deal with in the past. Years ago, at my son's school's Grandparents Day, the student teacher was chatting with my mom about my son's interest in history. She enthusiastically recommended Mom get him Howard Zinn's "People's History" as a Christmas present. Mom said something like "That book will never enter my daughter's house!," which stunned the student teacher. Get you facts straight, for crying out loud. Nixon did not create the Department of Education, Jimmuh Carter did. The United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (also known as HEW) was a cabinet-level department of the United States government from 1953 until 1979. It was administered by the United States Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. In 1979, a separate Department of Education (ED) was created from this department, and HEW was renamed as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Why? The food sat in storage until it EXPIRED due to bureaucratic delays and a massive shakeup inside USAID. Once it expired, officials claimed it was no longer safe for consumption—so they burned it or buried it. Hostin didn’t hold back: "Food is a human right. Randi Weingarten is probably in her 70's and didn't spend very much time actually teaching . As with Albert Shankar ( sp?) before her ,she got out of teaching fairly quickly to get into the more lucrative work of being in union leadership. Our high school PE teacher made it a priority that we got a lot of good ol' fashioned close order drill. In the late 60s that came in handy for a lot of us. The coolest thing was our 10th grade English teacher, good guy, the girls loved him, that made the announcement he was leaving teaching. I went through Texas public schools from the late 70s-1989. Plano ISD. I received an outstanding education that prepared me exceedingly well for a highly demanding and competitive environment in the College of Engineering at the University of Texas. Dr. Wayne Hendrick, the man who built the Plano schools of that timeframe, did a phenomenal job creating probably one of the top 5 school districts in the state, but he retired in 1990.
My wife and I were excited to put our first daughter into Plano schools in 2003. Just 14 years later, but they had been transformed out of all recognition. Already by that time, they were thoroughly penetrated by wokeism and institutional rot. Even 4-5 year olds were exposed to all manner of immorality and there were numerous onerous and silly regulations. After one year, we decided we were going to homeschool all our kids, and have ever since. 5 kids are all the way through high school, but we still have about 9 years left (ulp) to finish homeschooling our youngest. It's been a joy, and it's not for everyone, and certainly has its drawbacks, but with the state of schools today, we had no choice. Posted by: Sloucho at July 18, 2025 11:37 AM (GD3mD) 137

An unemployed Stephen Colbert decides to become the martyr the left is demanding and decides to try to get shot by an I.C.E. agent. Luckily, he is hanging around a bunch of illegal aliens, including 2 murderers and 3 rapists. I.C.E. pulls up. A crazed Colbert takes out a gun, runs into the street babbling incoherently about Trump, Hitler, FACISM and starts firing a gun, poorly, on the agents from 2,624 feet away. One agent pulls out his Glock 19 and fires a bullet travelling 1,312 feet per second. How long does the bullet take to reach Colbert? Bonus Points. A crazed, unemployed Christiane Amanpour, also seeking martyrdom, screams out at a fallen Colbert "You f@c$ing PUSSY!" and grabs his gun. She runs 1,312 feet closer to the I.C.E. agents, kneels and starts firing at them, poorly. The I.C.E agent returns fire. How long does the bullet take to grant Amanpour her hero status? Dumb bitch. She's worked there for nearly two decades, helping prevent students from experiencing the bullying she faced growing up with disabilities. Technically, she still has her job for now. Her position was protected by another court order in a separate lawsuit to reinstate fired Education Department staffers, specifically at the agency's Office for Civil Rights. OCR, as Gellman-Beer calls it, works to resolve allegations of discrimination and harassment brought by students and teachers at colleges and K-12 schools. The entire regional office she led in Philadelphia was among seven that Trump shuttered in March. Hundreds of OCR staffers were let go. Despite President Trump's insistence that the agency must close, he just gave it a load of new responsibilities. Robert Jason Cottrell, who was a data coordinator in the Office of Postsecondary Education: "My biggest fear is that they’re going to try and contract this stuff out to get it done. Government worker unions are absurd.
Private sector unions, theoretically, work to improve the bargaining position of workers against business owners. And therefore government sector unions work to improve the bargaining position of government workers against...the taxpayers. But they already have the vote. In private sector union negotiations, you have two camps on opposite sides of the table -- business and labor -- each with opposing goals and self-interested bargaining positions. In public union negotiations, there aren't two camps. The politicians "negotiating" against the unions are in fact dependent on the unions for votes, money, and clout. What bother me most about what I see in my sons school is the utter lack of high standards and expectations for work being done on-time. Assignment are regularly allowed to be turned in late without penalty, often given back to be reworked without penalty and even tests can be retaken on occasion if a teacher feels the student could have done better. These are artifices without any real world effect or practical meaning. Posted by: San Franpsycho at July 18, 2025 12:08 PM (JvZF+) Posted by: eleven at July 18, 2025 12:08 PM (fV+MH) 245

This works only for those who crave to learn of course. Many of the kids in public schools not only hate education, but actually suspect that it is a tool used to oppress them.

Grumpy and Recalcitrant ---
>>> And what's with this sending kids up to the next grade when it's obvious they didn't learn what they needed to in the current grade? When did "Hold them back because they failed" stop being a thing? All you get at the end is someone who is so horribly steeped in failure and shame that it's tough to get them to ever want to learn again. Here's an answer: I want you to visualize an elementary school packed with 1000s of kids ranging in age from 6 to 26...that's why no kids are held back more than one or in extreme cases two years. In my state, kids can fail math but if they can barely read then they get advanced. They can be illiterate but if that can manage a passing math grade they get advanced. You can only cook the books if the visuals match. Posted by: Not your IT guy at July 18, 2025 12:43 PM (1GAVH) 248
205: "Every couple of years ..Those bond measure always easily pass. Cuz for the children, man."
Your legislature could solve this problem easily. Mandate that all school district in your State --must-- hire parents on personal service contracts to provide for their children's education if (a) the parents apply for the contract and (b) the child scores at or above age-level expectations on standardized tests of Reading (any language) and Math on or before the start of the contract year. Count the children as enrolled in the school that they would otherwise attend. Set the value of the contract at some fraction 2/3 < a/b < 9/10 of the district's per pupil revenue. My recommendation? Do not try to fix the $1.7 trillion per year US K-PhD credential industry. Let it rot.
K-12 GED at any age. Call paid child labor "apprenticeship training". Post-secondary Mandate that the five service academies open online branches which (1) admit everyone who applies, (2) charge no tuition, (3) employ no faculty, (4) conduct no classes, (5) define courses by their syllabi, (6) offer credit by exam, (7) license independent agencies to administer exams at a fee to be negotiated between the student and the exam provider. Let competition between Sylvan Learning Centers, the Kumon Institute, and the University of Phoenix drive the cost of a college degree down to the cost of books and of grading exams. I understand that Xi in China is already essentially deposed, and the triumvirate that has replaced him is waiting for the August convocation (?) to have him announce that he wants to spend more time with his family, and breathing.
A non-fatal succession would be a big step forward for the CCP, they claim, but Xi is widely suspected of assassinating his former Premier, so that ain't a done deal. And apparently the military that used to love him wants him gone, and are probably quite flexible about how it happens! Wouldn't it be wonderful if some group of oligarchs helped Pooty-poot arrive at the same lofty idea! Posted by: Ray Van Dune at July 18, 2025 01:41 PM (PQOq3) 251
This is way late, but when I was about 21 I was at a party - and my 2nd grade teacher (and her husband) were present. I had a legit drink with my 2nd grade teacher. RIP, Mrs. M.

My teachers in the 1989s and 1990s on the other hand were mediocrities going through the motions, with few exceptions. Or they were out and out evil people.

31 She also didn't capitalize Sun. When referring to our own sun (not capitalized when referring to a class of burning gaseous bodies), it is a proper noun.
Posted by: ERF at July 18, 2025 11:11 AM (qqD/x) Proper nouns are rarely if ever capitalized anymore. Drives me crazy. Posted by: Cow Demon at July 18, 2025 05:03 PM (vm8sq) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.046 seconds. |
