Trump and the GOP Look to Gain More Seats in the Midterms Through Redistricting

In Texas, they're about to vote on a plan that should, in theory, if everything works out, give the GOP five additional House seats.

They're doing this by "unpacking" red voters from red districts and moving some of the red voters into blue districts, in hopes that the new red voters can flip those districts.

There's always a danger to doing this: by making the red districts less red and more blue, you create the possibility that you'll lose red seats if there's a blue wave. When you spread out your voters into more districts, you have a better chance to gain more territory, but you also increase the risks that the enemy can seize your more-lightly defended bastions, too.

But the Democrats are so toxic and chaotic right now that it seems like a good time to make this bet.

The Democrats are crying, can you even get this, racism.


Texas Democrats in Congress sharply criticized President Donald Trump's plan to redraw their state's political map in the middle of the decade, labeling it a threat to democracy -- and warning their GOP counterparts that an aggressive gerrymander could come back to haunt them.

The Republican-controlled Texas Legislature is poised to consider a new set of congressional maps during a special session that kicks off next week. With their party locked out of power in Austin, Democrats from the state's congressional delegation said they expect the new districts to continue Texas' history of violating the federal Voting Rights Act by diluting the votes of racial minorities.

"The scheme of the Republicans has consistently been to make sure that they mute our voices so that they can go ahead and have an oversized say in this," Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, said at a news conference with House Democratic leadership and most Texas Democrats. "So I fully anticipate that's exactly where they're going with this map."

Earlier Tuesday, Trump told Texas congressional Republicans that his political team is pursuing a map that would yield five new Republican seats, according to three people briefed on the call, which was first reported by Punchbowl News.

At the White House, Trump later told reporters that Republicans could get three to five more seats out of a new Texas map -- and that other states could follow.


"Texas would be the biggest one," he said. "Just a very simple redrawing, we pick up five seats."

Democrats have very few tools at their disposal

Don't be modest, they have plenty of tools.

to stop or even mitigate the redistricting. Both chambers of the Legislature are under Republican control and overseen by leaders who are unlikely to stand in Trump's way.

This leaves Democrats fearful they could lose their jobs without a clearly defined offensive playbook. Their limited options to hit back include convincing blue states to redistrict in favor of Democrats to offset GOP gains in Texas, a move they hope would dissuade Republicans from going ahead with the plan.

The Florida State Supreme Court just upheld Ron DeSantis's 2022 redistricting plan for that state, keeping the 20-8 GOP advantage. This doesn't add any potential pick-ups for the GOP, but it does end the Democrats' bid to undo the map.

How do the midterms look?

They're obviously a long way off.

That said, the GOP is well-poised to gain seats. The Cook Political Report -- biased to the left -- analyses the seats that are potential or likely pick-ups for either party, and finds that the GOP has a +12 net advantage in possible pick-ups in the 70 races expected to be competitive. That is, of the competitive races, there are 12 more incumbent Democrats in potential danger than Republicans. I think this means that 41 Democrat seats are in play, vs. only 29 Republican seats. (Corrected.)

That sounds so boring. Let's see how CNN's Highly Excitable Harry Enten reports the news. You've already seen the first thing he talks about, that Republicans are only behind by 2 points on the congressional ballot according to CNN's Democrat-skewed polling. In the second half, he compares how many competitive seats each party had in prior Republican mid-terms. Democrats had a plus seven advantage in 2005, and wound up picking up seats. They had a plus thirty three advantage in 2017, and wound up flipping the House from red to blue.

And now? Republicans up 12.

CA is a 60-40 state. 17% of its House members are Republican.

IL's map is fucking ridiculous.

The way the Constitution's section on the census is worded, I don't think you can remove illegals. But what you can do is remove them from being counted for congressional apportionment, since they aren't voters (or, at least, shouldn't legally be).

CA has ceded the drawing of congressional districts to an "independent" board. The legislature nor the governor can override them. They also can't just redraw maps in between censuses.

So, in order to do it, they'd have to get a resolution passed by...the voters. Before March. That either dissolves the commission or creates some weird exception.

And, the state is already at 43-9. To make it 48-4 or whatever would be to create a whole host of very narrow Democrat seats that could get taken out in an unfavorable election.

Also, lawsuits continue to clean up CA's voter rolls and ICE is very active in CA.

I'd prefer a game theory type where parties can incrementally add precincts to districts based on some rules to promote contiguity and regularity. If you want a black district, then spend your points making one, or several. You could weigh the points to spend based off of party popularity so even nutty parties would get a turn.

there's no easy way to draw TX with a gain of five red seats for next year (though two would be easy). it's even harder in CA given the fact that they could lose four or even five seats in the next reapportionment (while TX picks up three or four).

OH is actually required to redistrict for next year... few other states have an easy path to "play at that game". Our path to victory involves changing votes... not redrawing lines.

And that system is fraying after the wildfires and with the Trump administration's aggressive efforts in the state to get the illegal immigration problem under control. That, combined with the RNC finally being in the hands of someone (Michael Whatley) who prioritizes actually winning elections over buying great flowers, creates a place where even Democrat power in CA may recede. Not collapse. Not descend into minority. But...recede.

I say just make a game of it. Big map of the state, divide the state into small nuggets to make polling centers of a certain size, define some reasonable rules for continuity and twistyness to make reasonable districts happen. If your party likes black dominated districts, well choose those nuggets to make one. If you want more balanced areas, make them with your picks. Some final sanity checks of the final districts and you should be done very quickly.

New Mexico, being sparsely populated, has a handful of significant population centers, even fewer that consistently voted conservative. This made the target of redistricting straight forward. Those pesky conservative centers got divided up between the other two overwhelming larger, in terms of population and politics, districts. It will be another 200 years before New Mexico sends anything but Democrats to the US House and Senate.

So yes, go for it Texas. If Texas Republicans don't obliterate the Democrat chances, eventually they will wake up one day with a Democrat majority in state government; stuff happens. Without a doubt the D's will make redistricting the R's out of existence the first and last job they have.

Hell of a way to run governments but that is where we are. And the slide towards a two state solution continues.

We certainly need some equivalent on the state level of the Electoral college on the state level. What exactly is the difference of State Senator vs State Rep? There is no political entity at that level for them.

But the City governments are far too powerful at the state level and translate that to the legistlature.

Then say a state is split 52-48 R/D you split the allocated districts that way with rounding up and down to whole numbers.

So a state like California that sis a 65-35 state doesn’t become a 80-20 state for congressional districts.

And then once that’s determined each party has a vote for who the rep will be. Basically reversing the primary and general election votes.

I'm far more gracious. They can have the entire Northeast and Northwest Coasts, but we're keeping access to the Pacific.

100 miles inland from DC to Portland, ME and 100 Miles Inland from San Francisco to Canada. Allow a 5 year period of self-segregation with encouragement of swapping land and whatnot.

We keep LA and San Diego for the Ports, but they can have the SF ones and all the East Coast Ones.

I'm open to negotiation to some more area to them, maybe even letting them have all the way down to LA, but they already live in dense urban areas, so they can easily deal with the smaller landmass.

Of course, this will never happen and we'd end up like India and Pakistan, but I'm still willing to let them go.

Breaking the link between the representative and the patch of turf he represents is the certain end of Democracy. Even if I elect a GOP dude, it doesn't do me any good if my vote is filled by some dude from across the state who doesn't even have to pretend to represent me and my issues. This is the issue with proportional representatives, ranked choice, all of these things that promote dirty games at the state/national level rather than appealing to the voter directly.

In the EU, one of the most powerful dudes was in a party with 10 percent or so popularity. They were allotted 3 seats. He always got one. He was assigned a party in the EU parliament, and made the head of it. So a dude that only a few percent of Belgians even voted for was ruling the roost.

A lot of the loyalty crap spouted about the ACW was post facto rationalizing. Virginians went north, Lee hadn't spent much time in Virginia while being in the Army pre-war. The Confeds had a General from Ohio (he married a southern gal IIRC). People moved from state to state in their lives a lot like now during their lives. Of course once states start lining up you're pretty likely to fall in with your home state. But it was mostly the deification biographies of Lee in the 1930s that seeded the idea of a massive difference in culture from then to now.

280 The whole "housing collapse" articles coming out lately are bunk or at least horribly incomplete. 1970s ranch homes where I live are going for record prices. If I wanted to sell right now and move to one of those new monstrosities where the garage sits in front of the living rooms, I could do so with quite a capital gain financially (which would then be taxed).

But that's probably the real problem. There is plenty of demand for homes, just as there is demand for entertainment, but people don't want the overpriced crap American homebuilders and film producers are putting out.

I mentioned a couple of days ago, the effort which went into creating and getting the Russia interfered with our elections nonsense to the point it was used against President Trump means there's nothing in the Epstein files.

And, the Epstein files, such as they may be, were under the control of a very corrupt DOJ and FBI for 8 years. Which means I'm not sure it's possible to say who is really guilty of anything.

However, knowing President Trump, if the files suddenly do come out, the left will likely wind up getting reminded they need to be careful what the wish for.

Absolutely. The current land-based arsenal is located in North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming (there used to be others, but those are the only three with live missiles at the moment).

The nuke-capable B-52s are based in Louisiana and North Dakota.

The nuke-capable B-1s are based in Missouri and (again) Louisiana (California has one (1) test aircraft).


The missile subs can be anywhere, of course, but I'd bet money that their crews skew heavily red.

That's that's pretty good plan. If the West coast states were split so all the water and farmland are in the newly created red State The conditions for that. What happened rather quickly I think.

In Oregon right now there is a movement afoot to split that state exactly along that kind of boundary. Washington is not as overt but the same conditions exist there. I can't imagine California outside of the big population centers feel different.
