"Considered by some to be a pie-in-the-sky aspiration of fiscal conservatives, President Donald Trump..."
And all it took was ONE independent-thinking president to alter the trajectory of the immovable force that is DC. That's right, Trump is neither Democrat nor Republican. He is Independent, Pragmatic Populist. The GOP was the only vehicle available to slither into the swamp, but Trump is not your father's - or your father's father's - Republican. Back during the brief budget surplus years in the late '90s, there were projections that the debt held by the public would go to zero by the 2010s. The national debt would be paid off. We saw how well that prediction went. There were several years with a "surplus" but only one year with a real surplus, where tax revenue, less SS taxes, actually exceeded spending. This is the "on budget" vs "off budget" games they play. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at July 21, 2025 06:51 PM (w6EFb) 81

Miley (w6EFb) at July 21, 2025 06:51 PM I remember reading many articles when we had two years of fake budget surpluses that claimed paying off the national debt was a bad thing and we should never do that. Trump has never focused on the fiscal disaster (nor has he campaigned/politicked about it). Only assumption that was reasonable has been that indeed he wants/hopes growth will lessen or solve the problem.
And it *is* part of the solution and of course brings all kinds of other benefits. But …. question is whether the insane orgy that began in his first term with the COVID stuff and worsened under the vegetable’s calamitous misrule can be readily neutralized just by growth and spending cuts. Massive unexpected revenue growth during internet boom in the 90s briefly balanced the budget with little help from “policy”. Numbers now are vastly bigger and worse. In any case Trump’s policies related to growth are beneficial for many reasons and critical, regardless of fiscal trends (which will be greatly improved as well). Oh yes, the concern was, without any outstanding marketable Ts, what would the Fed do monetary policy with. What would it create dollars against? At one time, some country was in the same situation, Australia, I think. They just floated some govt debt out there for the central bank to use. Trump has never focused on the fiscal disaster (nor has he campaigned/politicked about it). Only assumption that was reasonable has been that indeed he wants/hopes growth will lessen or solve the problem.
-- He sorta did, though. He is keenly aware of the looming disaster. But he's spoken of it as treating the debt as leveraged debt like a business. Not consumer debt like an individual. Borrowing $100k to buy a rental property is not the same as borrowing $100k to buy a boat. But, getting there requires a massive change to the income side of the ledger. It's the whole reason behind his recent attacks on Powell, to refinance the debt at a lower rate. With tack-on benefits of increased purchased of housing and cars by Americans. America, as a business, can manage a massive debt load. America, as a consumer, is teetering on bankruptcy. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at July 21, 2025 07:14 PM (uEVfM) 183

rhomboid: "In any case Trump's policies related to growth are beneficial for many reasons and critical, regardless of fiscal trends (which will be greatly improved as well)."
All true. However, in my 29 years, I've never seen the Federal government not expand in scope nor expense. And for a significant portion, it has been expanse at an accelerating rate. The temporary "savings" that are projected on to budgeting gives the Congress et al the go ahead to say, "Hey, look, we're about to be swimming in doubloons! We don't have to worry about debt anymore. Let's go shopping!" Without fail, projected savings actually translated into increased spending beyond savings. It's as dependable as a sunrise. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at July 21, 2025 07:12 PM (ZOv7s) Al Capone was at least ambulatory. You don’t see any mob families run by Stephen Hawking. Posted by: sniffybigtoe at July 21, 2025 07:15 PM (b4o9z) Al Capone was from Five Points in Hells Kitchen in NYC. He was a millionaire in his twenties. He rose in the ranks of the Cosa Nostra in NYC before he was called to Chicago. Posted by: Captain Fantastic at July 21, 2025 07:25 PM (uEWUd) Posted by: jsg at July 21, 2025 07:26 PM (1l+t9) 232

I compiled a list of every political figure (not including journalists and pundits) that appeared on Stephen Colbert's show in 2024. Try to see if you can spot some sort of pattern:

"Massive unexpected revenue growth during internet boom in the 90s briefly balanced the budget with little help from “policy”. Numbers now are vastly bigger and worse. ...." Posted by: rhomboid
yeah, smart guys I read think Trump is committed to "inflating" out of the debt crisis. Inflation in stock values is part of real inflation. PE's are already very high ... but just keep pouring money into markets ... like Tulip Mania? idk, but cutting much of the budget helps, perhaps mostly in defunding gov funded Dem projects (as USAID did). Removing the criminal gangs helps, back to oil/coal/nuke power helps. Long way to go ... could happen ... (hopefully not just a dream). Posted by: illiniwek at July 21, 2025 07:31 PM (vbXSk) 246
That Tartaria stuff is just nuts. It proposes a *recent* advanced civilization that was destroyed ("Mud Flood" or some such). This would've been just a few hundred years ago. And it was all covered up, all history is a lie, a big conspiracy. What Hancock and the others propose is a very ancient advanced civilization, before the Younger Dryas and the end of the last Ice Age. And possibly more than one over the 100K - 200K time when homo sapiens have been on the planet. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at July 21, 2025 07:32 PM (w6EFb) 247

I would sure understand if it were. Posted by: Axeman at July 21, 2025 07:24 PM (krQz2) He did "The Big Red One", a war flick in 1980. The federal budget is a bit hair raising.
1) the tariff can make a huge dent. 2) The Medicaid cuts are crucial - I think we will net several hundred billion $ there alone. It's funny because everyone assured us that illegals weren't accessing Medicare or Medicaid. So, the Republicans called the bluff - okay, so since you aren't using ANY of that money for illegals, we'll just write a bill making it illegal to use the money for the purpose you say it definitely isn't being used for. One huge problem is the no tax on tips. The other is that blue states economic policies are a disaster - it's gonna be hard to grow the overall economy if Illinois, New York, and California slips into a massive recession.
