I love still life paintings, especially from Dutch Golden Age artists. Peschier may not care about the adage but this is an example of real talent. The realistic detail captures the viewer's attention and won't let it go. The stained skull, everyone's final end, contrasts with the jewel-like sheen of the fabric and gold coins. The hourglasses in the shadows are not prominent but can't be ignored. I especially like the wood grain on the violin and the detail of the sheet music. For all the moral warnings in the scene it doesn't feel morbid to me. The violin, the sheen of the fabric, the writings and tools are points of creativity, possibly beauty. They may be momentary but they aren't signs of a wasted life.

Still Life (Vanitas) by N.L. Peschier
Victoria and Albert Museum: "Although little is known about Peschier, he specialised in the production of highly refined ‘vanitas’ paintings also called ‘memento mori’. This genre painting combines still-life elements with diverse inanimate objects so as to function as a reminder of the vulnerability of human life and invite the viewer to meditate upon the passing of time. This type of pictures reached the height of its popularity in Western Europe, especially in the Netherlands, during the 17th century and became characteristic of Baroque art." Little is known about the artist. His name is on the sheets of music which don't seem to fit the theme of the painting. Where's an ornate frame? Perhaps the painting is a key to his life, his past or political commentary. 🤷♀️ Yes, I'd hang this painting. It's before Wyeths but could blend with a few of theirs. I think my favorite argument they have for NPR is that rural areas will be underserved without it. If there's one thing Bubba and Darlene crave it's the droning monotone of liberal white women from New York.
Come on now. All Things In Green Acres Considered is a big rural hit at NPR. Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at July 18, 2025 10:38 AM (muwun) 216
Still life's and self portraits were advertisements for the artist, the presentation of everyday objects people were familiar with allowed prospective patrons to judge the artists skill. Get some rich aristocrat or king to hire you as his court artist and you were set for a couple years anyway.

Yes, the toilet is an “installation” because of its multiple parts that must be “installed,” but I think it being 3D is not the key factor. What about sculpture? Is Rodin’s Thinker an installation? I think his Petite Danseuse at the Louvre might be, since it has a small dress that must be placed on the figure. The last time I saw it, the dress was quite old and tatty, perhaps the original?
