Goring Oxen

Nobody likes it when his ox is gored. When the ox in question is a "public service" or something "in the public interest" or "in the name of the people" or that "is for the greater good," the response to potential goring becomes absolutely hilarious. You see, someone who is ostensibly all about "public service" (gag) or "the greater good" (double gag) can't get all upset over his ox getting gored, because he has to pretend that it's not about him, about his empire, his power, his wealth or his influence. He has to pretend it's about "The People" or, even better, about "The Children."

With the current administration trying to shove a tiny rescission through a deeply corrupt Congress, everyone with an ox is making tremendous amounts of noise. Cuts to "Global AIDS funding" have already been stripped from the bill and the pigs are lining up at the trough to save the rest. When the bill finally passes, it will probably be a barely-cut. One thing that might - will hopefully - be in the final barely-cut is an organization running full tilt to avoid the goring. The rescission includes an effective defunding of a particularly pernicious agency: PBS. PBS' head hencho is, of course, warning of dire consequences if her ox gets gored.

WaPo decided to interview the head of PBS, Paula Kerger. Unsurprisingly, she talks her book and warns of dire consequences - though not for herself. Oh my, no. The risk to her sinecure is the last thing on her mind, you see. She is just worried about poor rural folks and children!

Most of the money goes to local stations. I was just talking to someone about our station in Kansas, in Smokey Hills; 54 percent of their money comes from the federal government. It is obviously an existential circumstance for them. They do a call-in medical show because they're serving a very large rural area. A lot of what they do -- as all of our stations do -- is try to understand what the local market needs and then they step up to it. A lot of people don't understand that big parts of the country are still without broadband.
An existential threat. Sounds bad. Apparently it will be oh-so-bad for rural Americans if their taxpayer-financed propaganda is cut off! We can't have that. But it will, of course, be even worse for "the children." Even while doing the normal ironic dance of how PBS is invincible even as it faces an "existential" threat, it is as usual all about "the children:"
Ironically, I think PBS would exist in some form, but it would be different. And if the goal is to take PBS out, this actually doesn’t accomplish that.

What it does do is it removes stations from a lot of communities. It's just heartbreaking to think about it again because for me it's all personal. When I think about all the different visits that I've had, not just with the people that work at the station, but the community and how much they treasure their local stations. I especially feel for kids because kids are getting hit on so many different fronts -- from the nutrition programs, from Medicaid, and then this is just yet another thing on top of it.

Those poor, benighted children. They will never recover from reductions in state-owned propaganda networks! Yet the messaging about "The Chidren" (tm) in this interview is particularly contradictory. In the prior excerpt, Kerger went on how vital PBS is to areas without broadband - yet in the same interview, she also talks about the mind-rot kids get on the internet:
A lot of kids are ending up on YouTube. "MrBeast" is one of the most popular programs for young kids. It is not a show for young kids.
Man, PBS is way more important than I imagined! It's vital for people without broadband, and the only thing holding the pernicious effects of broadband at bay!

It's all so tiresome. Kerger doesn't mention the absurd and transparent left-wing bent in PBS programming. She doesn't talk about the Party-controlled progressive propaganda her network produces. She doesn't talk about the nakedly political operation she runs. She provides no consideration that maybe her brand of social and political obscenity might be bad for people, or whether the argument could even be legitimate. She discusses none of the reasons why Trump and some Republican politicians have finally, apparently, run out of tolerance for America's state-owned propaganda organs. It's just kids and poor rural folks all the way down, with not one word about the real reasons.

Is rescission an existential threat to PBS? I seriously doubt it - but a man can dream. Some oxen get gored because they need goring, and PBS desperately needs a good goring.

You can stream any BBC period drama or police show via Britbox.
You can see animal documentaries on Discovery, NatGeo, etc.

Or - get this! - get it for free on CD at your local library.

The money saved from getting rid of PBS is nominal. The value of its removal is as a signal that this time, they're serious about starting to get the budget under control. If they can't even do that, they're not.

21 The biggest scam is that PBS shows like NOVA are produced by a private, for-profit company. They then sell episodes to the NOVA producers, while retaining the resale rights (dvd), merchandise, etc.. Bill Moyers got very wealthy doing "public" tv. Imagine the billions earned selling Sesame Street dvds and merchandise? I am sure BBC makes a ton of money off of PBS airing their shows.

Maybe if PBS created in-house what they broadcast at a reasonable cost they might be worth funding. But all they do is platform programming at government cost while retaining no part of it that would earn the taxpayers back what was spent to do so. They simply help producers earn a ton of revenue while getting to pose as if they are giving back to the community.

Posted by: Lizzy at July 16, 2025 11:14 AM (GbwPZ)

22 I'd bet a call-in "resale" show like Tradio does more for peoples' wellbeing than that call-in medical show.

"Hi. This is Jimmy in Olathe. I have a '93 GMC 3/4 ton pickup I no longer use much, but it runs great. I want twelve hundred bucks for it. 555-1234"

Mike in Manhattan buys it, and uses it to haul his chickens to market, raising his monthly income a little.

GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski seems to be the lead against the rescission package with Collins and McConnell backing her.

>Forbes Breaking News, yesterday: JUST IN: Lisa Murkowski Bucks Trump And Announces No Vote For Advancing Rescissions Package. (YouTube)

On the Senate floor, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said she'd vote no on advancing the rescissions package.

Yes, "gutting" Public Broadcasting was within her explanation. Something else she said that was interesting (to me): There's been no successful recission package in the Senate in 33 years.

It's a fact! As of July 16, 2025, there has not been a successful, presidentially proposed rescission package enacted into law in the Senate in the last 33 years. The last successful presidential rescission package to pass both chambers on a largely bipartisan basis was under President George H.W. Bush in 1992.

Never ceding a bit of power.

Remember when the Clintons got in trouble for one of their early grifts, Whitewater? They stood to make maybe $150K-$200K. Doesn't that level of graft seem quaint compared to what we see everyday now?

Apparently, our migrants/refugees now get government funded food stamps, SNAP, public school free breakfast/lunch/dinner and weekend groceries *and* free food from food banks.

181 Wealthy billionaires (donors) contribute a fair amount of money to FedGov. At least the parts they have an interest in. The amount of taxes collected from 'taxpayers' who file, and owe isn't nearly enough to fund all the horseshit Congress wants. And they're not all Americans either.

I think it more likely he just went to an American bank. "I see you want a loan. You're a citizen, right?" "Si, Ese." "Fabulous! Here's your money."

I wonder if they just found an abandoned restaurant and opened up a shop, maybe paying the property owner under the table.

Most likely, yes. Which is another problem the left always ignores. Illegals with jobs buy stolen SS numbers. Identity fraud in the US costs consumers billions every year.

California farmworker who fell from greenhouse roof during chaotic ICE raid dies
by: OLGA R. RODRIGUEZ, Associated Press
Posted: Jul 13, 2025

“This man was not in and has not been in CBP or ICE custody,” DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. “Although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, this individual climbed up to the roof of a greenhouse and fell 30 feet. CBP immediately called a medivac to the scene to get him care as quickly as possible.”

“Glass House has never knowingly violated applicable hiring practices and does not and has never employed minors,” it said."
--
Q - So it has crew leaders out in the fields to ensure hiring practices and working conditions are as required?
--
Newsweek, in part, "GoFundMe campaign for Jaime Alanis, a 57-year-old California farmworker who died Saturday from injuries sustained in a 30-foot fall during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid, has raised over $150,000 as of Sunday evening."

So not entitled to workers comp, etc? (Reportedly, had worked for many years and sent $ back to his family in Mexico.)

Something is off.

That sounds very "sus" as the kids say.
Someone should look into it.

Not really it's no different than an author selling the story rights to a movie studio for their novel.

Large corporate farmers in CA use an "arms length" approach during harvest. They sub the job out to a contractor who then brings in the farm workers.

230 204 My guess is that the bill won't pass the Senate and House and PBS will get funded even more in a clause in some continuing resolution. But at least they are making a gesture toward something they promised decades ago.

Did you see the footage of McConnell being asked why he voted against this? He froze up, totally vaporlocked. Like "old dementia patient can't even figure out what is going on" fugue.

Please stop with the black pilling. Bill is on final 10 hr debate (no filibuster possible) and has already passed the House. Basically will get the minimum 50 votes in the Senate because no one really gives a damn about PBS and NPR other than Democrats.

As a bonus, after this bill, Trump can make another rescission proposal which gives 45 days for the house and senate to claw back even more money from FY 2025.

Regular procedure of money bills are also proceeding in the House and Senate for FY2026 which starts in October 1 this year. It will be up to the Democrats in the Senate as to whether they give Trump a free hand in a government shutdown to determine what is necessary. No debt ceiling so Dems have no leverage.

235 221 Speaking of money laundering, has anyone else noticed some shops remain open year after year, yet, seem to have very little foot traffic?

I've often wonder if such shops were merely a front to hide cash.
Posted by: blake

Often. Particularly true of businesses that can claim cash like restaurants, nightclubs, etc. Trick so old that the Mafia used it way back when. They usually put up a 'straight man aka no record' as titular owner and then launder cash through the biz.
