Freud White Dog1.jpg

Girl With A White Dog
Lucian Michael Freud

Yes, yes, I know.

Freud was a tremendous 20th century painter, and if you take a moment and think about how few real artists there were and are in our age, perhaps you will see him in a different light. It is easy to categorize him as a modern artist, and of course that fatally tars him with the brush of upside-down toilets presented as art, or splashes of paint considered masterpieces. But he had skill and talent. Whether you like the work is a personal decision, and his view of humanity is certainly suspect (he was a prick in real life), but the man could paint!

77 Yes, Freud had talent. Look at a closeup of the dog, the girl's hair, even the mattress cover. But what he chose to paint is the problem. Where is the beauty or even an intrigue? What could have been an attractive portrait of his first wife relaxing is spoiled by her expression of discomfort. It's easy to imagine him saying: "OK, babe, whip out a tit and don't look happy. Wouldn't want the viewers to enjoy looking at the painting."

91 AI, in part -
"Girl with a White Dog" is a painting by Lucian Freud, completed between 1951 and 1952. It depicts his then-wife, Kitty Garman, and one of their two bull terrier dogs. The painting is notable for its intimate portrayal of the subject, the use of muted colors, and Freud's exploration of texture and form.

Subject: The painting features Kitty Garman, Freud's first wife, in a seated position, partially draped in a yellow robe. A white bull terrier rests at her side, its head in her lap.

It is believed that Kitty (his first wife) was pregnant at the time this painting was created.

Artist did a fine job with the folds of that robe. He managed to make it look soft and fluffy.

The gratuitous showing of the boob seems unnecessary. If she were completely covered, but with the deep v neckline of the robe and she was looking out the window it would be a more interesting painting.
Freud was a good artist but the washed out colors and people who are either unattractive or just look tired and used up make a lot of his work unappealing.

169 Girl With A White Dog 1951
Lucian Michael Freud

After the toilet and the dumbass British imperialism pic I was beginning to think the Tate was a fake ass poster shop for rube American tourists. I can take the hit: Maybe I was a bit premature in my assessment. Maybe. 1 out 3 is not a trend but a start at this moment.

Let's recap. Lucian was a prick; we are off to a good start with that. Then there is the mommy issues bloodline; he is shaping up to be a home run. Was married twice and had a three way homo affair, bam, checking all the boxes. Summary: mean, crazy, and a pervert. My kind of artist.

This painting. Wow. The desaturated colors are precise and in complete harmony with each other; they build such a sense of calm and intimacy. That last idea, intimacy, between the artist and the subject, it seems was exactly what got the subject to expose her breast, seemingly somewhat against her natural instincts not to do that. The tension between the calmness, accentuated by the dog at rest, the uncertainty about posing partially nude, highlighted by her protecting her covered breast and blank stare, conspire to revel a most difficult relationship at work.

Would hang.

215 Because of reader sensibilities, when Mailer's debut novel The Naked and the Dead substituted the word "fug" wherever "fuck" had originally been.

At a soiree, Mailer was introduced to the omnisexual gadfly actress Tallulah Bankhead. "Oh, yes!" she trilled, on learning his name. "You're the young man who doesn't know how to spell 'fuck'!"

Mailer was obsessed with the idea that Jews needed to be tougher, and willing to mix it up in the physical world. I'm sure he was a genuine hard case.

As I said, not a communist.

It's a mark of just how cultish socialism is that Orwell remained a socialist even after almost getting whacked by his "not a REAL communist" buddies in Spain.

While Franco was often called a Fascist, he wasn't one, other than in the sense where communists call anybody who isn't a communist (and even some who are) "Fascists". The real Fascists were a rival brand of socialism.

His point is a good one, we as a society overlook absolutely rancid behavior on musicians, actors, and artists if they are good at their craft. The painting pretty much sucks, too. It’s a weird bit of degeneracy on the part of the West. I get it, a world full of Norman Rockwell paintings would be boring. 285 Saw lots of awful accidents years ago involving grinders and augers in meat processing plants in NJ.

A teenager - the only employed and English speaking person in his family (which also didn't have a telephone) climbed on top of a stainless steel table in a chicken processing plant, luckily while wearing rubber boots, when the auger guard was off & the auger being cleaned. The kid slid and his food wound up in the rotating auger. Doctors from Cooper hospital amputated onsite to save his life.

Also saw a lady working for the USDA slip in a chicken processing plant, while a room was being cleaned as required by gov. regulations. Her arm when into an open, rotating auger that was being washed, and, yes, she also had to have an amputation to save her life.

People often misjudge machinery as become more comfortable in their surroundings.

309 Not as gruesome but slower and probably more frightening because it was slower , I had a worker operating a standing forklift at a grocery wholesaler who somehow pinned himself between the racks and the forklift and slowly suffocating to death before he was discovered. He passed in the ER.

Yeah, I get that, too. Every group has it's pressure releases.

It's not so easy being at a site of a fatality or terrible injury, trying to do a thorough, legal investigation while facing hysterical family members, and often angry employers.

And, as you know, not everyone will be eligible for Workers Comp, state disability, etc.

Yet it's a right foot that's on the end of that leg. Granted, a left foot in that position, with the arch on the upper side of the foot, would not be nearly as picturesque. But still ...
