An amazing painting. Realistic detail in subtle colors (not the jewel-like colors Millais used in his Pre-raphaelite images). The charts, the ship visible through the window, paintings on the wall, the huge pennant, speak to a life at sea. The old man is both reliving his life and sharing it with his daughter as she reads from his logs. He is enjoying simple pleasures now: a drink by his side, furniture that meets his needs, (that chair looks very comfortable), even fresh flowers. The title would mean more to contemporary viewers than today, when the northwest passage was a failed dream that claimed many lives and ships. Millais shows a survivor but the allure of his adventures still has a hold on him. The man gives an impression that he would try again if he could.

The 1845 British naval expedition commanded by Sir John Franklin to map the Northwest Passage ended in disaster, with none returning alive from the Canadian Arctic. The 19th century Inuit testimony described cannibalism among Franklin's men in the final throes of the expedition. Such claims were controversial at the time, but were supported in the 1980s and 1990s when knife marks were identified on human remains recovered from expedition sites on King William Island.
Posted by: andycanuck (mZtdJ) at July 15, 2025 10:16 AM (2yoRf) Posted by: Beavis at July 15, 2025 10:16 AM (0sNs1) 169
Survival cannibalism generally follows a sequence in which meat is initially cut from an intact corpse, but if further calories are required, successively greater effort is put into corpse processing. End-stage cannibalism is characterised by breakage and boiling of bones to extract marrow fat from medullary cavities and cancellous bone. The current work involves re-examination, using macroscopic and microscopic study, of human remains (representing a minimum of 35 bones) from the Franklin expedition. It describes evidence for breakage and polishing of broken edges of parts of some long bones. These alterations are tentatively interpreted as breakage and heating of bones in water, to facilitate marrow extraction. If this is correct, then it constitutes the first osteological evidence of end-stage cannibalism among members of the expedition. Comparison of these osteological findings with 19th century Inuit reports provides further evidence supporting the veracity of Inuit descriptions of cannibalistic practices by expedition members.

In 1852 Edward Belcher was given command of the government Arctic expedition in search of Franklin. It was unsuccessful; Belcher's inability to render himself popular with his subordinates was peculiarly unfortunate on an Arctic voyage and he was not wholly suited to commanding vessels among ice. Four of the five ships (HMS Resolute, Pioneer, Assistance and Intrepid)[50] were abandoned in pack ice, for which Belcher was court-martialled but acquitted.[51]
One of these ships, HMS Resolute, was eventually recovered intact by an American whaler and returned to the United Kingdom. Timbers from the ship were later used to manufacture three desks, one of which, the Resolute desk, was presented by Queen Victoria to US President Rutherford B. Hayes; it has often been chosen by presidents for use in the Oval Office in the White House.[52] Posted by: andycanuck (mZtdJ) at July 15, 2025 10:17 AM (2yoRf) 173

Later, when he is trying to stop the missile going to Mis Tesmacher's home town, we see him hanging in the air, waiting for it -- and then it *evades* him. This is why he is seen chasing it down. Actually, Tim Tebow was a good player and could've been great in the NFL.
--------- No. The best Tebow could have ever been as a NFL Quarterback was "adequate". The primary job of an NFL Quarterback is to distribute the football, and far better passers than Tebow washed out of the league before getting 10 years of service time. A shame the released film cut both of these scenes.

The reason that only Superman was on the rocket in the original story is that it was a scale prototype and Jor-el ran out of time. It could only hold the baby and his mom but she wouldn't leave her husband because she wasn't a Supermom.

released emails include a smoking gun exposing how Tim Thibault was searching for a crime to investigate! -- Does law enforcement have an obligation to search for crimes to investigate? The way this is worded it doesn't seem 'smoking gun' worthy. --- Long-standing policy at the DOJ was to never, ever open an investigation unless there was clear evidence of a crime first. And it was never, ever was a senior official to open an investigation, only field agents. Thibault was a political hack desk jockey who stole a patrol car to find and pull over the guy running against his boss, smashed the taillight with his nightstick and then claimed he smelled alcohol on the driver. Then ran into the DA's office, put on a suit, and filed DWI, resisting arrest and attempting to flee charges in the court of his father-in-law golfing buddy. Richard Donner had quite the directing career. He did some Twilight Zone shows, including "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," several Man From U.N.C.L.E. episodes, and more, before moving into films.

Which is better, the Donner or the Lester version? Posted by: Soothsayer at July 15, 2025 10:52 AM (N9VmQ) ======= I prefer the Donner version. Neither are...perfect. Lester's is sillier. Donner's is partially made up of test footage (the scene that Reeves and Kidder tested for is in the film...the actual audition footage). Donner's recycles the ending of the first (it was originally supposed to be the ending of the second). But, Donner's feels more right to me. I don’t mind that at all. It’s what makes the movie a story about assimilation instead of a dreary anti-ICE metaphor. (Also, entirely on point for what many illegals, especially Muslims, want to do). Posted by: Ian S. at July 15, 2025 10:56 AM (QZThv) 309

Not a football fan or expert, but when Tebow was at the Broncos, the entire team was happier, positive, and appeared to work better together. Probably helped that replaced an arrogant jerk of a QB, but still. And Tebow, being a media magnet. ALWAYS used that to draw attention to other people, such as the special need kid he invited to each game. He seemed to make everyone around him better. I really haven't seen a lot of Millais' work aside from the too oft reproduced picture of Ophelia in the water , but he was certainly miles ahead of the British "artist's " work which we had yesterday.

I know this has been unpopular, but your body does not process high fructose corn syrup differently than honey - in fact, honey has more fructose.
If we were talking about honey, you might have a point. At issue is fructose versus glucose, or sugar. While they are chemically very similar, they are handled completely different. Every cell in the human body can utilize glucose, and indeed can establish a preference for it over time as the fat burning parhways become atrophied from disuse. Fructose can only be metabolized in the liver. Because of this fact it is under study for cheonic conditions related to non-alcoholic fatty liver syndrome, very commonly associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, etc. It also tastes like shit, so there’s that too.
