New York State's $100M bridge light project ends in costly storage

More than $100 million was spent on specialty lighting intended to illuminate New York State bridges, but the lights were never used and have been sitting in storage for two years.
This story was first reported by Politico, so CBS6 tracked down New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin Driscoll to see what he had to say about the seemingly forgotten plan.
The New York Power Authority purchased the lighting equipment and design plans under former Governor Andrew Cuomo's initiative to enhance the aesthetics of the state's bridges.
However, the lights remained in cardboard boxes inside a warehouse, which was an additional $2.1 million in storage fees over seven years.

Good news is, they recently sold the lights to recoup some of the money spent. They got $383,000.

News From The Jews

As the West dies, Israel’s future lies with rising Asia

Since its founding, Israel believed it could develop alliances with western countries because we shared the ancient values of our Judeo-Christian heritage. We also believed such alliances were natural joinings, since we Jews had much in common with Western Civilization.
But the 77-year history of Israel’s diplomatic alliances with the West appears to be ending, and increasingly we see that we have disturbingly little in common with the dying West.
Indeed, today’s totalitarian leftist and progressive ideas prevalent in the West have resulted in an undiluted hatred of Israel and the Jews.
For Israel is everything the western left hates. We are nationalistic, we are patriotic, we believe in the distinctiveness of our culture, we revel in our history, we are religious, we celebrate marriage and having children, and we believe in serving our country in uniform.
The West, however, no longer believes in any of these foundational virtues. In conversations with today’s young adults in the West, they repeat their mantra about seeking “quality of life,” rather than assuming the responsibilities of both adulthood and nationhood.
And because the long history of the Jews always repeats itself, the West hates the religion of Judaism for the same reason so many empires and dictators did. Which is because we will never bow down before the West’s leftist religion, this new paganism, but instead cling to our 3,500 year old faith.

The author makes some very good points and predictions – for example, Islam will conquer Europe, but descends into ranting anti-Christianism at the end.

Hail To The Redskins

The Redskins Didn’t Die. They Got Mugged.

Let’s cut the bullshyte.

The name "The Washington Football Team," as "A Newspaper in Seattle" used to call it, wasn't retired; it faded gently into that good night. A lousy woke ideology mugged it in broad daylight despite a fanatic following with decades of history. Corporations, along with a failing culture of morality, decided that Redskins was too vile and too racist to remain.

Those decision-makers never bought tickets or watched a single snap, yet rode a woke wave of condescension and used Daniel Snyder's sins as a tool for change.
Although it's only for a short period, the moniker may be making an overdue comeback.

I never liked the Foreskins, but I still call them by their old name.

Dumbass Democrats

The Mountain Dew That Sank the Dems

The newly released book “2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America,” which is another one of those Monday morning quarterbacking books about the election, reveals Harris’ method for choosing Walz out of three candidates for the vice presidential nomination.
The New York Post explains how Harris chose between Walz, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-Pa.), and Sen. Mark Kelly (R-Ariz.):
Harris’ “gut” told her that Walz would appeal to rural voters because he wanted to drink Diet Mountain Dew instead of water? What kind of “Hee Haw” nonsense is this? She probably thinks that the deeply offensive video for the ‘90s Eurotrash techno version of “Cotton Eye Joe” is an accurate depiction of how people live out in the sticks. Maybe she ate at a Po' Folks restaurant in the '80s and thought that the over the top hillbilly patter on the menu is how rural people talk.

Dumpster. Fire. Thank God.

Hear Me Out—Trump Deserves the Nobel Peace Prize

The current president’s unconventional approach to international relations makes D.C. ridicule the idea of Trump as peacemaker, but it’s hard to argue with the results. By choosing pragmatic deal-making over ideological posturing, he’s broken decades of stagnation on several fronts.
In 2018, Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The summits yielded limited long-term results but undeniably reduced the immediate threat of nuclear brinksmanship. The nuclear-grade rhetoric of 2017 gave way to dialogue, significantly reducing North Korea’s missile tests during Trump’s first term.

While it’s easy for critics to boil down the current U.S.-North Korea relationship as one between a “dotard” and a “little rocket man,” it’s resulted in a good deal more than a few laugh lines. American willingness to engage directly with a pariah state, despite domestic and international skepticism, showed courage and resulted in de-escalation over confrontation. And the Trump administration’s general commitment to avoiding military entanglements proved a key factor in maintaining global peace.

He's done a lot for peace.

I'll say this to defend the team: 3 Superbowls in 10 years with 3 different quarterbacks. 2 were MVPs. The third was John Riggins, infamous for being inebriated at some DC event along with Justice Sandra O'Conner. He said, as he slid under a table, 'Loosen up, Sandy, baby'.

I think it's the only team in the history of the NFL to have a president call a play live (Nixon and the 'Skins).

Sometime in the early '90s, some white, affluent students decided it was time to fix all that [back then they were "Social Justice Warriors", now they're "woke" - same shit, different day].

The university went to the tribal members who overwhelmingly supported keeping the name Miami Redskins - they felt it honored their tribe.

I don't think Europe will become Muslim. Like that author said, Westerners are now concerned with "quality of life," and they're not going to get that with bans on alcohol, sex, music, bare arms, etc. and exhortations to fasting and prayer. I don't know how the current invasion will end, but Europeans won't convert. I don't think enough of them will die out, either.

The author says it's time for Jews to flounce. Ends with veiled threats to develop cutting-edge defense technology with the Chinese. Declares "we will never bow down before the West’s leftist religion." How do they like the Chinese religion substitute? I've thought from time to time that America could set all of Israel up somewhere in Texas. What do you think, how many would vote Democrat?

They had a goofy artichoke costumed dude who would run out on the field. He was a stoner who would often mock the team, which was never very good.
The high point/low point of the program was when the Artichoke and the teams Coach got into a knock down drag out fist fight in the middle of the field during halftime of a game.

So we will not be getting Ciampino's monthly pension like he had planned for us to help live off of. I am disabled and homebound, so we now only have my sister's meager check from her retail job.

We are highly stressed now because of bills and trying to take care of the cats. We cannot even afford to pay for his cremation right now. He has been cremated, we just can't bring him home until payment. His cremation was $3500

We also need emergency funding for our cat Purrcy. He is bleeding from his mouth. The vet consult will be $50 and if he needs a dental, it will be around $400.

If any feel they can help us out with Purrcy, here is our cat fund. https://t.co/iS8XTjbmSR

Obviously, they served their purpose, which was to give money to whoever sold that stuff to NY, for which the standard kickback was received.

I'm such an old fart, I might have thought that for $100M, you might get - I dunno - maybe a BRIDGE or two. How ridiculous of me!

Posted by: mnw at July 10, 2025 10:26 PM

Certainly a matter of perspective.

Personally, I would have been scared to insult Chief Wahoo in Cleveland in the '80s back when the Indians were good.

Likewise, would not have made a Redskins insult in DC during the '80s either.

Fans for either team in a bar after the game would protect the honor of those "pejorative" mascots, IMO.

Identifying 6 digit numbers that are large enough to be read at 10 feet, front and back of tac vest. They will be assigned randomly per operation, and logged and saved for 5 years. New numbers assigned for each operation. No agent will be easily identified nor can that identity be tracked, but any illegal behavior can be attached to a particular number on a given date. That number can be indicted and then a court can subpoena the records and unmask the individual for prosecution.

Muslims run several major European cities. Soon it will be countries. They won’t have a choice. Muslims only need to be 35-40% of the population. They’ll vote as a bloc. And that’s enough to win landslides in parliamentary systems.

Some of it, yes: "Of note, while working in Asia for decades I heard a common refrain among Jewish businessmen in Japan, Korea, China and elsewhere, that day-to-day life for themselves was easier when working in Asia than in Europe, where there was always a caution they felt as Jews living among Europeans."

Probably true.

But then: "Critically, Israel must be prepared for when the United States again turns to the Democrats and elects another leftist as president."

That's ironic.

174 56 Scottsdale Community College’s mascot was the Artichokes, named by a slacker hippie student body who were always pissed that Arizona State U would park failing athletes there for a year or two to build back their eligibility.
They had a goofy artichoke costumed dude who would run out on the field. He was a stoner who would often mock the team, which was never very good.
The high point/low point of the program was when the Artichoke and the teams Coach got into a knock down drag out fist fight in the middle of the field during halftime of a game.

I am a proud attendee of Scottsdale Community College! Long story. I got my required freshman English classes and all my social studies/history electives credits out of the way there before I went to and graduated from the University of Arizona. In Tucson. The only real university in Arizona. We in Tucson always called the pretend university in Tempe by its original name. Tempe Normal School. A teacher's college.

I never attended a SCC Artichokes game. Wasn't interested. I now wish I had, just so I could say I had.

My father was an amputee with two cancers for his last few years. We said, "Big whoop", you are still going and threw his butt in a wheelchair and took him everywhere and to all family events.

Fortunately, I am a big dude and my little brother is even bigger. Either of us could easily bump him up any set of stairs.

We even took him fishing for striped bass at Lake Texoma close to his last days. He probably caught at least 50 that day.

He was always worried about being a "burden". It was NEVER tough on us!

Any available "chair pushing linebackers" in your family? If so, I suspect they would also love to include you as much as possible. (And a lot is possible.)

Keep in mind that they have cash cows in 2 tunnels and 7 bridges. The average cost for the Lincoln tunnel is about $20 (more for extra axel vehicles). Over 20 million vehicles use just the Lincoln Tunnel annually. Then, they have subway, regional trains, buses. All of these facets of the MTA bring in massive revenue.

But, they're still $47 Billion in the hole, because of stuff line the $100 Million bridge light disaster.

But, worry not...I'm sure their overseer will be able to make that City owned grocery store work.

Anyway, the original Cleveland Browns franchise (began in the short-lived All-America Football Conference, 1946-1949), is now the Baltimore Ravens franchise. The current Cleveland Browns franchise is a pure expansion franchise.

NOTE: The Browns, Colts, and 49ers franchises were admitted to the NFL when the AAFC cratered.

Interesting point. But it's a reminder of what a lame name that is.

Nobody in Buffalo ever really cared about, or had anything to do with the actual Buffalo Bill, whose name comes from the animal, not because he was from Buffalo, NY.

Nobody knows where Buffalo, NY got it's name. One theory is that buffalo actually roamed as far east as there, but that seems unlikely to me.

The team owner, who lived in Detroit, apparently liked the alliteration, I guess.

Posted by: MrExcitement at July 10, 2025 11:22 PM (hOOi9)

231 A question I've never seen an answer to: why would you name a team with something you'd intend as an insult?

It isn’t based on logic, or good intentions.

“Squaw” is a good example. Settlers asked the Indians what their words were for different people, places, and things. Squaw is the Indian name for Female. There wasn’t (and isn’t) anything derogatory or demeaning about it. Squaw Flat in Canyonlands, UT was renamed, however. Countless other geographical place names as well. This actually costs considerable time and money, cartographers used to be highly reluctant to do so.

So it begs the question (As Alice in Wonderland asked aloud) who gets to decide when a word is offensive? There is no standard, other than there are no standards. “I’m offended” is enough to ruin someone’s job, their career, their livelihood.

Intent doesn’t matter, which is rather the point, I suppose. And the standards of what is politically correct are ever changing. What was formerly the preferred “sensitive” or progressive nomenaclature can, and does become highly offensive, depending on who you ask.

Do try to keep up, lest ye get yer ass in a sling.

Posted by: Orson at July 10, 2025 11:04 PM (dIske)

No argument on the light boondoggle.

A big reason for that billion dollar hole is pensions. Not only the actual cost of the pensions, themselves, which are quite incredible, but the fact that a lot of retirees leave the state, so the state is deprived of that pension money flowing back into the local/state economy.

Pensions are a two-way killer, one obvious, one not-so-obvious.

Mismanagement, city employee work rules, overtime, all those things help the budget hole.

If New Yorkers had to pay the actual price for a subway ride, they'd riot. The fare is so heavily subsidized, including from car owners and licenses/fees, that is, people who never ride mass transit.

It's what happens with government unions, plural, as their are many within the MTA. They're a killer. Even FDR knew that.

304 >>> Hey, I've got an idea for a StL MoMe. We could all get together and search for treasure in abandoned buildings.

MoMee attendees could recreate the scene in Percy Jackson where he fights the Greek monster Echidna and the chimera inside the St. Louis arch, then escapes by falling out of a hole made by the monster into the Mississippi River below?

(I may have a kid obsessed with the series, and have read or watched it with him multiple times.)

The city has enough problems, like it'll notice monsters rampaging around or holes in the arch.

"Of course I condemn any assault on law enforcement, you shit poster. Now do Jan. 6."

Except they are completely different!! The Jan. 6ers were unarmed, and the only person shot was an unarmed woman, shot by a capitol police cop.

So now he has forced himself, by his own hand, to condemn the protestors and defend ICE agents. In California. While making a false equivocation to Jan. 6 that is easily debunked.

About a week ago he got a cease and desist notice from these bastards until he pays up the license fees for the covers songs played by the the performers. I am like WTF?

He's getting strong armed because these bastards could never track down the locals that actually play these songs.

It's a technical term in parachuting. Often times unfortunates become entangled in their gear, and descend in a rapid spin, causing an auguring effect of drilling into the tarmac. Bodies bounce too, if they're not turning 3000 rpm's at ground level.

356 Raid on Camarillo pot farm was with a criminal warrant approved by a federal judge, for harboring illegal aliens. Earlier scuttlebutt included allusions to cartel or Chinese involvement as well. 10 illegal alien juveniles, 8 unaccompanied, detained in the operation. Word is that by the end hundreds may be arrested in this op.

Six months in, no perp walks for employers of illegal aliens. Not even any arrests I know of. The biggest accelerator of self-deportation possible would be "fear" among employers, who'd quickly try to find legal labor.

Worried about getting convictions, you say, in certain jurisdictions? Um - "the process is the punishment" - businesses would be seriously disrupted, if not suspended or ruined, just by making arrests, and how many of these employers have ever seen the inside of a jail cell? These are not Chechen jihadis we're talking about. They'll scream and beg like Navajos*.

385 Just reading about a DOD investment in a rare earth mine in California. $400,000,000. There are active mines all over Nevada that could be repurposed into rare earth mines.
Ruth is one. Outside Ely.
The goooberment already owns the ground under Silver Peak where they do Lithium.
Anyway. A mine... in California... with gobberment at the helm... MSHA soon to follow... I wouldn't work there even if I still could.
There are so many overpaid dipshits who do nothing but bullshit all day as it is on these sites as is. Add gooberment to it all the time... Nothing will get done. Unions. Prevailing wages. Collective barganing during crucial times. It's going to be fucked.
We think it's expensive to import from China. We ain't seen shit yet. Free up the land in Nevada and let the market do it's thing. We've got lots of minerals and dirt and people who know how to farm it.
Get the government out of the way.

Posted by: Reforger at July 11, 2025 02:51 AM (SJnNf)

386 You basically get the rare earths from active mines. You have to catch and synthesive the leftovers. Acids are involved. Very messy and unhealthy processes. We also haven't done it in a while. Unknown how long it will take to ramp up. This may take a while. Could see hard drives reemerge as solid state needs rare earths.

388 Something like half or more of Nevada is federal land. I wonder if they ever did a geological survey. Huge parts of Canada were never surveyed. No telling what is there. Relying on China isn't going to work. Japan figured out how to cut the need for rare earths by 75 %. Might help to have them along.

Calif had the most productive Rare Earth mine in the world, and the Environmentalists shut it down...

more than 60% of Calif is owned by Government... we have no idea what actual minerals are there....

Personal note... I know someone who tried to reopen a GOLD MINE in Calif, and was shut down by the State... even though they were very careful about affecting the environment....
