One-Dog Band Cafe

rodentsniffingflower.jpg

Dog prefers hopping around like a bunny.

My bodyguard.

The narc.

Pupper has ears like Dumbo.

Cool runnings.

Puppy rescued from a bag thrown in a garbage can turns out to be the sweetest little recycling project.

Dogs share my feelings about vegetarianism.

Dog thinks a guy in a werewolf costume is just a big weird dog.

Dog has a touch of Munchausen syndrome.

Dog provides all the in-flight entertainment you could want.

Cat and owl meet to determine who can be the most aloof.

Fun with water.

Almost as noisy as a husky:

It's looking more and more likely a negative leap second will be needed around 2029, ff this keeps up. The last normal positive leap second was at 0:00Z Jan 1, 2017.

So, ~10 years without one. And it continues.

I predict if a negative leap seconds looms, they will get off their asses and accelerate the plane to eliminate them. A negative leap second has never been done, and it would likely break the internet and just be a mess with computer systems all over.

There is a predictable component to this due to the solar and lunar tidal torques (and smaller gravitational perturbations) and then an unpredictable random component. It's this latter that has done something unexpected. Some suspect it may be the differential rotation of the inner core somehow. Could be mass redistributions in the mantle.

They've only been able to measure this to the current incredible precision since atomic clocks were invented and came online for around 1960. However, before then, astronomical observations became precise enough around the early 1820s, that variation in the earth's rotational speed could be detected, just not to the current atomic clock precision.

There was a period during the late 1800s when the Erf was rotating pretty fast, and the length of the day was likely 3 ms faster. Had the current UTC scheme been in place then, several negative leap seconds would have been required.

Just changes in the distribution of mass and the loss due to interaction with other planets and the moon. An earthquake can make a hiccup in the speed of the rotation.

Most spectacular leap I ever saw: The cat quickly leaped off the bartop, several feet over to on top of a dresser, jumped down to a shelf, another leap back onto another dresser, then launched into space, and with one paw swatted a moth so hard the moth smacked several feet down to the floor, deceased. That was some impressive fast calculation and gymnastics.

Cat landed safely.

91 Growing up in Wyoming in the 1980s was different than the rest of the country, at least compared to MTV.

The boys wore Levis, T-shirts, or casual button shirts, sneakers or boots. Hair was usually moderately short, a few mullets, and wispy mustaches for the lucky few who could grow one.

The girls wore Levis, T-shirts or blouses, sneakers, boots or flats. Their hair was maintained, but not a lot of Jersey Mall-hair.

All in all, a very conservative town when I lived there.

Sort of related, but not, I was watching something on Amazon, and one of those commercials came on. They show the people struggling with whatever, then get all cheerful about the drug they're pumping, before speed reading through the side effects.

The drug was for people with Tardive Dyskinesia. If you don't know what that is, look it up.

There's a drug. For Tardive Dyskinesia. The actors get all fumbly and their faces contort... it was the funniest thing I've ever seen. I was falling off the couch from laughing.

Now, I know plenty of people with TD. It's no laughing matter, but the commercial, for the drug to treat it... you people... if I can call Big Pharma "people."

Reminds me of the story of the two women who worked in a nursing home. They were lovers, until one of them broke off the relationship and moved to another state.

The one who stayed behind, she went to the police and told them she and her lover had intentionally killed something like 5 old folks in the facility, just for kicks.

Now, when those folks died, no one suspected anything. Afterwards, they dug up bodies, didn't find any evidence of the drugs that were supposed supplied to them, but dagnabbit, they had a confession, and that was good enough.

The confessor got 10 years. The other gal got life without parole. That was well over 10 years ago.

Now, there's revenge, and then there's lesbo revenge.

The WNBA probably has a fan base equal to the combined fan bases of a half-dozen AAA minor league baseball teams. At most. It would not exist if corporate sponsors, and ESPN plus other networks who will show almost any sport in the summer to fill time, weren't duped or arm-twisted into handing money to the league.

250 I'm thinking maybe Idaho...

Frankly ... you have to think an area that nobody else wants. Because if it's "hot" ? Then you end up with Atlanta. If it's "cool" ? You end up with Nashville.

There is no possible way to have anything good without the locusts from the Pacific Coast and North East coming down and ruining it.

The Ohio Valley at least has that going for it. No Yankees. No Californians.

254 Okay...true confessions. First wife and I were on a country road. We saw a rabbit. I went into the harangue about how animals would move, and it was the driver trying to avoid the animal that killed most of them.
I drove straight at that rabbit.
Thump, thump

With gophers, the best way to miss them is to drive right at them. They usually run across the road, and not parallel to your line of travel. If you dodge left or right, the gopher is also going to dodge left or right, and you have a 50/50 chance of hitting it. If you drive right at it, and it dodges, your odds of a clean miss are much better.

261 When all you have to comment about is if Ketchup on a Hot Dog is a thing to argue about ?

And that is a real thing ... I've heard on local radio folks argue exactly that. Who fucking cares ? Wake me up when somebody forces me to put ketchup on my hot dog. Or denies me the right to do so.

It's my hot dog ... which I'd like to throw away. But if I'm starving ... I'd like to put ketchup on it. And don't care about erudite opinions at that point.

I live just north of the capitol in Cheyenne. My property taxes when I bought the place were about $1,700 per year. They just dropped them to about $1,200 per year. Everything seems to go in the right direction here.

273 I still have the ceiling drip in my living room. Fortunately -- miraculously -- it happened right over a bucket I had left there from the last leak, which happened in a different spot. Of course I called what is laughingly labeled "maintenance," and they said they would put in a work ticket. No appearance by anybody today. I'll call again tomorrow, and the day after that if I have to.

True story, cause i'm not a good liar...
Week after the great rabbit debacle, we were leaving my folk's house after dark. There was an owl feeding on some dead critter in the road.
I adopted the now suspect tactic... and killed an owl.
Only times that's ever happened for me.
I lost a lot of credibility with that wife.

Posted by: MkY at July 09, 2025 10:02 PM (cPGH3)

277 Yeah. This, this is something to consider. I just don't want to have a bunch of lefties around me....

Its not just "leftie" ... its priority.

Why do folks you like, you think, not leave New Jersey or Boston or such here ? And trust me - many of the loud voices on this board are from Jersey.

Would you want them around you ? Do you think they'd be less pushy from your side of the fence ?

They would not. Because that is their priority. That is how they live.

Now consider all the places they WOULD leave for. Avoid those.
