A Tad Bit Longer Than 17 Years

On a recent trip to Cape Cod, I was pleasantly surprised to be there during the emergence of the Brood XIV 17-year cicadas. I've experienced 3 emergences of Brood X cicadas in central MD - 1987, 2004, and 2021. These noisy little critters annoy a lot of people when they emerge from their mostly-underground life to clumsily fly around, make a lot of noise, mate, and die. I, on the other hand, have always been fascinated by them.

As luck would have it for you ONT readers, "the algorithm" fed this article to me recently. I think it's KEWL!

47 Million Years Old: Oldest True Cicada Unearthed in Europe

doof-Fossil-of-Female-Cicada.jpg

For the first time, a fossilized true cicada has been identified from the Messel Pit deposits. Eoplatypleura messelensis is among the oldest known representatives of modern true cicadas in Eurasia and marks the earliest record of the subfamily Cicadinae worldwide.

This discovery, made at the UNESCO World Heritage Site near Darmstadt, enhances our understanding of the region’s ancient fauna, fills a significant gap in the cicada fossil record, and sheds light on the evolution and spread of this insect group in Europe during the Cenozoic era. The findings were published today in the journal Scientific Reports.

The adult female cicada from the 47-million-year-old oil shale of the Messel Pit is remarkably well preserved, with a body length of about 26.5 millimeters and a wingspan of 68.2 millimeters.

“The family of true cicadas (Cicadidae) is one of the most species-rich insect groups today. Nevertheless, there are only very few fossil finds compared to the large number of modern species,” explains Dr. Sonja Wedmann from the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt.

She adds, “Within this family, the Platypleurini group is particularly striking. It has a wide distribution and includes many species with unique traits. For the first time, we have now described a fossil from this group of cicadas.”

Check out the whole thing.

Genius Name for a Business

Another noteworthy item from my trip to The Bay State. I discovered a place while looking at a map. I want to go there and shake the hand of the person who decided on the name.

I want to believe it went something like this...

"So -- we've got this place with horses and we'd like to have cute little pony parties."

"OK. What's the problem?"

"Well, we want to have a clever angle. Ya know - something that will make us stand out from the competition. What would make a Gen X parent choose US?"

"Hmmm. I got it!"

Blazing SaddlesPony Parties.jpg

Yup - It's real. Honestly - can you think of a better name for a business???

Fun in the Summertime

Cooking Outdoors is the Ultimate Summer Sensation: Poll Ranks the Eight Best

doof-Grilling.jpg

The most quintessential sensations of summer are smelling a grill, relaxing at the beach, and diving into a swimming pool, according to a new survey.

The nationally representative poll of 2,000 American grill owners found that time near the water (68%) and pool hangs (68%) top the list of iconic summer ‘feels’—with the scent of cooking over the grill (87%) coming in at number one.

***

Asking what they’ve been cooking so far this summer, classics like hamburgers (82%) and hotdogs (73%) are prevalent, but also fancy fare like steaks (74%) and seafood (36%).

One- third of respondents said they’re likely to toss literally anything that’s “grillable” on the grill.

***

The Fourth of July was the biggest grilling event of the year for 60% of those polled.

TOP 4th OF JULY MAIN DISHES

You mean you can't think of a single possible other meaning to "blazing" saddles? Like maybe "flaming" was already trademarked somewhere? Look at that logo again and tell me you can't see the "flaming" aspect of this?

If it were the movie, it would be red/blue background (like bandanas), or tan and green (for the desert and the vegetation). I'm guessing "pony parties" is a double meaning, too.

Cynical? Or realist?

33 I made an observation at a July 4th picnic and would like to see how it holds up with the rest of you guys.

At the picnic I attended I knew the politics of attendees in advance. And, almost without fail (there was a single outlier) conservative attendees tend to show up with universal food items that everyone seems to enjoy. No risk. Liberal attendees seems to show up with food items that are a bit unique (as an example...a celery and cranberry casserole) that they, themselves, might enjoy and it never occurs to them that a vast majority of attendees might not.

So, does this left leaning narcissism actually Venn Diagram its way into pot luck food items at picnics. I'd have to say it does based on a single picnic. I have a family reunion coming up, so I'll be keeping tabs there as well. You can't have too much data.

Our fairly conservative church has all kinds of experimental food show up at potlucks. I often show up with something a little unusual - and people ask when I'm going to make it again. Heck, I'm the guy that showed up at a bi-monthly potluck where we would learn about John The Baptist with grasshoppers and honeycomb. (Yes, a lot of people tried it. Though I wasn't asked to do it again.)

But, even with that, most of the experimental stuff is a variation on standards. Even my fish curry soup.

So of course this atrocity (I would say Babi Yar is an appropriate comparison) sparked a righteous visit by the idiot mayor, and cretin "protesters". Don't think affected results though.

The best part is that every time the idiot local elected officials barf up their ridiculous "outrage" and concern, ICE doubles down and does a bigger op. It's called an escalation ladder. The airhead racists who constitute the "resistance" appear unfamiliar with the concept, as one might expect. Beautiful.

But that's not the real issue. The real issue is that Epstein was a significant intel asset, both of the CIA/State Dept as well as a number of foreign intel agencies. Epstein wasn't a mastermind, he was an asset. An errand boy for grocery clerks kind of thing.

The Marco Polo, a Seattle dive bar, has a trough urinal in the men's bathroom, and every day they pour about 100 pounds of ice in it. filling it full. The place is clean and the ice is to keep any smell away, instead of using those urinal cakes. It will always remain a dive bar.

Son saw an injured crow on the road and scooped it up. Didn't make it. 🥺 Buried it in our pet cemetery area this afternoon. Not like having a long-time pet die, but, you know, you hoped it could be saved.

And just now, our old black cat Ony brought in a frog… again. At least she has a particular meowerl to alert us to her latest acquisition. Until now, they've been tiny ones, including a tree frog. Some of those she has eaten. Tonight's was a good-size arrow frog. Was moving fast, but the cat kept on him so we could find him. Caught and released, with possible injury. 🐸

'70 or '71. It was the GM A-style, and they all sold a lot of them. Nearly the same body as the Buick Skylark and the Chevy Chevelle (the Malibu was a Chevelle model), they had different grills, taillights, and trim. Also the hoods were cut differently, but not by much. under the hood they were pretty much the same for the most part. Most had that 350 cid V-8, (other engines as well but I think the 350 was the biggest seller) then the brand tweaked the engine to their own specs to make it different.

Or maybe he's coming at it from a different angle.

Trump's job is not just revenge, it's leading this country to a better place. Our deep state has done some pretty shady shit over the years, particularly when looking in the rearview mirror of what isn't a '68 Skylark, I had one, and sometimes airing all of the dirt laundry isn't the best way to go.

As I said, Epstein has been working with our intel community since the days of Iran Contra and there is a lot of water under the bridge on both sides of the aisle. Some scabs are better not picked. It's possible that Trump wants to attack this problem from a different direction as unsatisfying as that might be for us in the short term.

He didn't expose the mountain of dirty shit USAID has done since the Reagan administration, he just defunded it and ended it. Maybe that's what he's decided to do here.

Maybe not. We'll see.

284 - Is that it?

- No, there's more.

- You see when the left tire mark goes up on the curb and the right tire mark stays flat and even?

- Well, the '64 Skylark had a solid rear axle. So when the left tire would go up on the curb, the right tire would tilt out and ride along its edge.

- But that didn't happen here. The tire mark stayed flat and even. This car had an independent rear suspension.

- Now, in the '60s, there were only two other cars made in America that had positraction and independent rear suspension and enough power to make these marks.

- One was the Corvette, which could never be confused with the Buick Skylark.

- The other had the same body length, height, width, weight, wheelbase and wheel track as the '64 Skylark, and that was the 1963 Pontiac Tempest.

Those taillights obviously belong to a '63 Pontiac Tempest! Hollywood is NEVER wrong.

Since he did NOT have any such job, then leaving the disaster area actually decreases the demand on scarce resources.

AOS (about 7-10 days ago?) had a video of a lady that had heavily face-painted one half of her face and then did great "acting" making it look like a full face in the linked video. The makeup was very dark.

I can't remember if that was in the ONT or in the Cafe. Alternatively, if someone knows the correct name for that type of makeup, then I could find more videos using a search engine.

Thanks for any future help.

Posted by: Don Black at July 07, 2025 10:57 PM (AOsQT)

It is a Pontiac LeMans. Guessing a 70

337 Aop,
Modern motherboards rely on UEFI for securely booting. Grub can be configured to dual boot partitions on two separate hard drives with a boot partition on both but easier to use UEFI to do it. Can't do it using the older protocol but pretty much have to use grub or some other boot loader.

My guess is you have two boot partitions on different drives so the boot order sequence is determining which OS gets loaded.

As discussed here earlier today, read the announcement carefully - EPSTEIN didn’t have a list. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t one. I think it’s not only possible, but likely that Epstein was just the front man to give a face to the joint, and that the entire operation was being run by elements of the FBI/CIA along with the Israeli Mossad, and almost certainly British Intelligence as well . (A whole lot of brits involved). Purpose? To obtain backdoor control of most Western Governments. Heck I’d bet that all 5 Eyes were involved to some extent.

And that will also be why everyone gets scared and clams up when they finally find out what was really going on there.

They never ran out, the Black plates did not reflect the radar guns at the time, so were changed out slowly.

New Black plates have a coating the reflects both radar and Laser...

Then the plates should be blue with yellow letters. When I moved here in 1980 my friend who moved at the same time registered his car in Pasadena and got the three letters - three numbers plates, I registered my car in the South Bay and got a plate starting with a '1' and three letters - three numbers. The colors on the plate in the photo came in a few years later.

As I recall.....

I've been reading and obsessing all evening over the Vera Rubin Observatory that just came online. The camera on this thing is the biggest digital camera ever built. It's about the size of a car, and weighs 3 metric tons and is 3.3 gigapixels. And the sensors have to be cooled down to around -150F:

https://tinyurl.com/2xvozd5d

It was built at SLAC. Transporting the delicate thing down to Chile was a project in its own right. They did some dry runs of test weights, with accelerometers mounted everywhere to measure every little bump the thing would experience during transit.

I can't remember if that was in the ONT or in the Cafe. Alternatively, if someone knows the correct name for that type of makeup, then I could find more videos using a search engine.

Photo's not crystal clear but as I said that plate looks like current series (blue on white, red cursive "California", 1 number six letters) - though it could be a vanity plate too.

I recall historically it was black on yellow, yellow on black, yellow on blue, then a weird one with a sort of sunset thinggy on the bottom, kind of cream-colored plate with letters/numbers whose color I can't recall, then the current one described above. A state with such a massive ownership and turnover of cars goes through a lot of license plate formats.
