Gun Thread: Vacation Edition 1.0

vacation pic scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be the Vacation Edition v1.0? Yep, that's correct guys and gals, We're headed to the beach for a week. Frankly my rigorous retirement schedule of napping, smoking cigars, and playing with Fun Size Joe & Gertie has been so exhausting I found I already needed a break. Thank you for understanding!

Fun Vacation Update: So we left Northern Virginia Saturday morning and about six hours later arrived at Surf City, NC. As we neared the beach, a portable digital road sign displayed the following message: TROPICAL STORM WARNING IN EFFECT which needless to say was something of a surprise as the last time I had looked at the weather the forecast was for fairly typical summer beach conditions. Anyhoo, it rained and blew bigly all Saturday night and into Sunday morning, but appears to be clearing, and I was able to venture out to get donuts and bagels for breakfast.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Q: Weasel, with you on vacation, do we get a respite from fundamentals?
A: No. No, you most certainly do not.

Adherents of WeaselDoctrine know one of the most basic fundamentals of establishing good fundamentals, especially for new shooters, is confining your range time to a single firearm. All guns are different, and I think it is important to establish your initial 'feel' for shooting on one platform rather than switching around with multiple firearms and mixing-up the characteristics of each. If you switch thru a lot of guns in a single session, you're likely not to recall the specifics of any one, but rather only a confusing blur of grip, trigger and recoil impressions. There is plenty of time to experiment later, but at first you want to focus on one gun to imprint good habits onto your brain molecules.

Even experienced shooters lessen the relative value of range time by constantly switching among guns because each time you change you must learn, or re-learn, the feel of the new firearm. Is this the end of the world? No. Does it make your range time and practice less efficient? Yes.

Don't take my word for it, let's see what par pal Hickok45 has to say on the matter.

Plinking and trying new guns is part of the funsies of shooting, I get it. Just don't let that rob you of a chance to focus on fundamentals and get the most from your range time.

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

12 Whelp, Mr. Weasel, I guess I blotted my copybook with my last range session. I'd been focusing on revolvers for the past few months, so I decided to get some trigger time on my 9mms for a change. I started by refamiliarizing myself with my alternate EDC, the FN Reflex, then spent some time with the SA-35 and finally my favorite 9 mil, the Tisas Stingray - a Commander-size 1911 - which I think is my favorite in that caliber. At least I shoot my best with it. It was good to get back to semiautos for a while.

13 No range time, again. Our a/c went out the last Friday in June. It took 5 days to get an HVAC guy to come out (they were waaaaay overbooked). It was what I figures it was - the condenser fan ist kaput. So, I put in a couple of window units I keep for emergencies (take that, preppers!) and we have two rooms we can live in while we wait for that part. (Did I mention that everybody is working overtime on fixing a/c units right now?)

I did notice my pistol was sticking a bit in my leather holster today. I've solved that for now.

Going to a show in southern Virginia later this week. I've searched and searched and found NO prohibitions against weapons, much less firearms for the venue. So, I hope I don't have to go back to the car and put it away.

Why yes, I made it to the range today. I woke up,feeling like crap but thanks to my good friend and shooting partner Iris, managed to get there and had a great time. There were only three of us today but had a great session. I worked on trigger pull so got in my fundamentals but had fun shooting a 32 that Ed L brought and Iris's EP 9.
Vision still not perfect but beginning to adjust. Then we went to dinner and Hrothgar joined us for some good conversation.

50 I picked up a new Walther PPK in .32 ACP on Thursday and brought it to the range to share w/ Sharon and Iris. The PPK in .32 ACP is a lot more fun to shoot than the .380 ACP version. There's practically no recoil to speak of. Shooting the PPK with one hand only is quite easy. The redesigned beavertail does its job of keeping your hand away from the slide. The biggest downside of the new PPK is (just like the original PPK) the sights. The sights have red dots painted on them, but they're so difficult to pick up (especially in low light) that they might as well not be there. 10 yards is about as far as I can push the PPK and still get hits on target. For anyone sensitive to recoil, the PPK chambered in .32 ACP might be worth looking into. And where else can you get that 007 vibe but with a PPK in the original Bond caliber?

Bolt face to muzzle. I can not personally confirm but I have been told that the procedure is to drop an 18 (shotgun) or 16 (rifle) inch dowel into the unloaded firearm and if it protrudes, you're in violation. There is currently some controversy over whether pinned and soldered muzzle devices count.

59 Scoob - the "T" in MOAR-T stands for Target subtensions which are thinner to prevent obscuring the intended point of impact. The result is a more uncluttered view. Most people who find themselves with an illuminated reticle take the batteries out of them.

Posted by: Skip at July 06, 2025 07:32 PM (+qU29)

Not an expert, let alone a lawyer. But I understand that the barrel length is measured from the end of the chamber to where the rifling stops. For most, that's the muzzle. But you can have a shorter barrel IF you have a muzzle device permanently attached to the end of the barrel ("pinned and welded") to get your rifle to 16". Example: The Colt 6920 reproduction SOCOM M4A1 has a 14.5" barrel. But it also has a "pinned and welded" muzzle device/flash hider that brings the overall barrel to 16", thus avoiding SBR territory and NFA status.

92 How short can a shotgun barrel be and how is it measured?
Posted by: Braenyard
======
Check for no ammo.
Close the bolt, take a rod and put it all the way down the barrel. Mark line where the rod exits the muzzle (I use wood btw as easier on the barrel but brass is ok too.). Measure length in inches--voila. By the way, permanently attached (pinned and welded) flash hiders, etc. count as part of the barrel.

99 There is currently some controversy over whether pinned and soldered muzzle devices count.
Posted by: Oddbob
====
Solder (even hard silver solder) does not count by ATF regs. Pinned and welded does.

FWIW, best to add a fudge factor aka 16.1 inches or 18.1 inches for a shottie if you are cutting down a barrel or having a gunsmith do it for you. Technically, you can have a short barrel that is shorter but it gets sticky if you 'constructively' have all the parts such as an AR upper receiver that does not have a stock on it, and so on. Parts, even not installed, like certain AR parts, can be 'constructively' construed by the ATF in cases that you are violating the law on either SBRs or even machine guns.

At one time, I was interested in buying old submachine gun parts for assembling dummies of guns like the Sten, Uzi, etc. After reading the regs, I decided to stick with old bolt action rifle restoration. One poor sob, a good sailor with a spotless record, is currently in federal prison for a total miscarriage of justice. ATF examiner purposefully took one of that guy's dummy sub machine guns and got it to fire once with substitution of an upper receiver. Conviction.

108 Seriously, I think the BBB is a master stroke in many directions. I can see the 1934 NFA being gutted, or at least without teeth. When suppressors, SBRs and other items are generally available, and the streets don’t run with blood, we will have turned a corner.

Posted by: RI Red at July 06, 2025 08:48 PM (EK2CC)

109 RMBS, if you're interested in a PPK, MSRP is $1,149 per Walther's website. But I picked up my PPK at my LGS for $899 plus sales tax. You shouldn't have to pay full MSRP for a new PPK. Make sure you ask for a .32 ACP version; .380 is still more common than .32 when you look at PPK's for sale.
