Perhaps the solution is to create a new visitor form. You fill it out, sign it, and get it notarized and witnessed. You get admitted, but have to wait for a country to adopt you, because you aren't a US citizen anymore.

It gets hazy if no one wants to adopt them after 6 months or a year.

The moms would make homemade ice cream and the kids would fool around with the novelty items, like snakes, tanks, chickens and poppers until it got dark and the show started.
I can still see Daddy and the others puffing on the cigars they used as punks.

And here we go.

The "Greatest Generation" ? They conscripted, to less than 10%. That's right, kids. That image you are fed of every able bodied man wearing a uniform ?

Horse shit. Didn't happen.

Now lets do Rosie the Riveter. Also bullshit for the most part. Women back-filled about 10% of industrial jobs. Granted, they filled 0% of jobs earlier. But the "war effort" didn't hinge on American Women.

It was still men making material for men to fight with it. Pure and simple.

112 Thank God for tetanus shots: circa 1900 lots of young men came down with lockjaw, tetanus, soon after major holidays. You see it was young men then, as now, who liked to set off fireworks around the holidays. When there was an accident, the firework that went off prematurely was often enough on the ground, and the explosion would drive dirt under the skin of the young man: hence lockjaw, which could be life-threatening in the days before antibiotics. Play it safe out there! Don’t lose a finger! And if you need a tetanus booster, please get it! Some shots are tried and true: the DT shot is one of them

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 04, 2025 10:25 PM (2GCMq)

If they had simply said 'Piss off, you Wankers', the British would have instantly understood. But no list of grievances.

TJ spent a good deal of time writing The DOI. While many complain about the slavery then allowed, as if that was anything new in the world or old as Time (not an excuse), but his words ring through History like the Liberty Bell. Some men have the gift of being able to write for his and future generations, laying out a political philosphy unknown until that time. Jefferson did. The idea of Freedom from nobility, again as old as time. Because Freedom in America is Business. We are the Feregis of this planet. Some would say in a bad way, or just as bad as Ferengis are portrayed.

But there's something in the human spirit about controlling your own destiny. We had smart people guide us. The first Revolution to overthow a parent country/gov't that did not lead to massive bloodshed after. Smart men.

217 Wolfus -

Manga is the comic book form, but that’s wrong because manga are drawn for grown men, old ladies, young girls, young boys, and as is common here, some are just for children. Anime is just the animated form. Manga is often the starting point for an anime series, but not always: some anime are original, or come from light novels (our closest equivalent would be YA, but again that’s not right - young adult novels usually don’t have the occasional illustration in them - although they used to!). Sometimes anime and manga are drawn from Japanese or Chinese history, or even from serious novels, like The Tale of Genji, arguably the world’s first novel!

1. Nolan Ryan: 5,714 strikeouts
Ryan took over as MLB's all-time strikeout leader on April 27, 1983, when he passed Walter Johnson with No. 3,509. Then he struck out 2,205 more batters before his career was over. The Ryan Express is the only Major Leaguer in the 5,000-strikeout club -- he reached that milestone by striking out a fellow Hall of Famer, Rickey Henderson, on Aug. 22, 1989. In his career, Ryan led his league in strikeouts 11 times, and he struck out more than 300 batters in a season six times. He joined the 3,000-strikeout club as an Astro on the Fourth of July in 1980 by striking out Cesar Geronimo.

The Whitman "Stories for Young Readers" series, esp. the TV Western novels like those for Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Have Gun -- Will Travel, had an illustration in each chapter that really helped nine-year-old me picture the events being narrated. I don't know if those were what we'd call "Young Adult" reading today. I never felt I was being written down to back then, and re-reading many of them now as an adult, I'm still entertained and carried along.

304 Well, I messed with lawn mowers all afternoon. Parted out three old steel-deck walk-behind jobs, saving the blades, engines, and wheels. Decks to the metal bin, handles to be cut up for tubing stock.

The blades I trimmed down to 14 3/4" using a chop saw, and drilled out the center holes to 3/4" so they could be used on my Dixon mower. Drilling those holes out was a bee-yotch; blades are hardened steel, and a high-speed drill would scarcely touch it. Got them all sharpened, balanced, and mounted, and took the Dixon for a test mow. It cut real fine, better than with the old worn-out blades, but one of the dividers under the deck came loose, and clattered on one blade. I'll hoist it up tomorrow, and weld it back in place.

Kill the King kind of thing. Though not from the top down. From the bottom up. This is the story of most revolutions, isn’t it?

Those with wealth, and power, are not usually prone to rock the boat. They have too much to lose.

That’s what made the founding fathers so remarkable. And Donald Trump, for modern context. Fabulously wealthy. Beautiful family, good kids. He didn’t have to soil himself with Politics. He enjoyed the admiration of many in and out of Washington, DC. That is, until he rode down that escalator. He could have kept himself busy playing golf.

Instead he’s tryijg to save the country, at great personal risk. He reminds me very much of the founding fathers. They shoukd try to clone him, really.

333 At church the prayer list for healing just goes on and on: I commented on this to friend in my prayer group and he just said “It’s a fallen world”. But I think a better answer is that God loves us and would have us come to him: some of these afflictions are to better us like refining gold in a furnace, and sometimes they are just to bring us to Him where we will have joy and happiness that we have never known in this fallen world. I pray for those who suffer and for those who care for them, may you be comforted, and may you be drawn to God. Amen.

He should have - in many ways the American Revolution was the continuation of many of the ideas that came to the surface during the English Civil Wars, 1640 -1649. The founding fathers were certainly aware of it, and a big reason they were so careful to limit and separate powers was a common sense of “let’s not have it all go wrong like it did last time!”
I also have found that the English to this day are very loathe to talk about their civil war. (Whereas we talk about ours all the time). But theirs was different; it released an ugliness, a lust for destruction that they’ve never been able to admit was there.

_June 13, 2025, Israel’s Mossad orchestrated a similarly bold strike, dubbed Rising Lion, targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. ...
These operations quite possibly signal a new era of warfare: patient, subversive infiltration by committed adversaries willing to play the long game.

Posted by: nurse ratched at July 05, 2025 12:00 AM (mT+6a)

Actually, I don't get the no meat part. We are omnivores. We get certain proteins and necessary fats from meat, most especially for our brains. We have canines to tear meat and molars to grind it. That's who humans are. We're the top preditor in the animal world on this planet. We even eat alligator tail, a pretty good predator in its own right.

I think the no bacon thing is the most concerning, though. That's just . . . , I don't, eating bacon at Customs should be required for entry into the US, even as a visitor. And look into revoking some birthright citizenship. Just because . . . BACON!

354 Long ago, back in my Granddad and Dad's day, out here on the ranch, the Independence Day party was legend. Relatives from near and far, all the family friends, and friends of friends, swimming, feasting, and shooting off fireworks all day.

After sundown, there was a fireworks show to rival the country club's. I remember seeing the big boxes with Chinese on the side. Must have been several bucks' worth!

One time I got to go out to behind the little wall where they set off the major works. My two older brothers were running the show that year.

There were two mortars for the two different sized fireworks. My brothers had the great idea to end the show with two simultaneous big bright flash-bangs. Those were supposed to go in the smaller mortar, but rather than delay the second one, my brilliant siblings decided it would be okay to use the wrong mortar for one of them.

So, one went up high, but the other went halfway up and came back down, exploding very near me, knocking me off the tailgate of the station wagon and deafening me for awhile. I can still see the flash.

My brothers. Somehow I not only survived them, but outlived them.

358 Vegetable-arianism is a silly diet.

I’m trying to imagine say, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, trying to feed 25 to 45 people expending 4000 to 6000 calories a day cording up the Missouri. Vegetables are OK, for survival purposes, when you can’t get any meat.

Protein, and Fat. That was the name of the game. Still is, but we (as a society) have become very sedentary. A boyfriend who shows up to a BBQ with fake meat is profoundly suspect. He should be arguing the finer points of Pecan versus Mesquite versus Hickory, or the relative merits and differences of a Porterhouse versus a T-Bone, that kind of thing.

443 I think the French Revolution started out as second sons attempting to overthrow the first born. Thus the Duc d’Orleans, the King’s younger brother, supported the Revolution at the start and provided crucial support early on when the movement might have been suppressed by Loyalist forces. The problem with that is, when younger brothers start offing older brothers, then the next youngest gets the idea, etc., etc. I think the motive force of the French Revolution wasn’t spent until most of the second sons had been killed off. It was a really bloody business and was motivated by jealousies in the higher ranks of society more than the many angers and sufferings of the peasantry. The peasants were used to get rid of the highest ranks of society, to benefit the next highest, but it snowballed and couldn’t be stopped for a good while. Ironically, the Bourbon Restoration of 1830 placed a descendant of the cadet line of the Bourbons on the throne, the very thing the Duc d’Orleans was angling for, before the revolution he helped get started killed him!

461 RickZ, sounds right. The guillotine was the method of execution in civilian trials. I think this started well before the Nazi period, could be wrong. Many of the "instruments" of terror and repression etc used by the Nazis were pre-existing ones that they transformed. The Gestapo grew out of the common-for-Europe-in-the-period "political police", in Germany's case the Prussian state version of this. Think Mueller, Gestapo chief, had a long career as a political cop in Bavaria and had even dealt with the Nazis in their earliest incarnation.

In the case of courts, while the legit courts were infiltrated, intimidated, and neutered in many ways, the Nazis wanted a more efficient tool of repression, so they established a parallel system of "people's courts" or "special courts". This where in the infamous Roland Friesler presided.

Posted by: rhomboid at July 05, 2025 01:43 AM (1m82a)

462 The guillotine was the legal form of execution in France from the Revolution until it’s last use in 1977. So when the occupying Germans found a Resistance fighter, after torturing him for information, he would be turned over to the Vichy government for execution for his various crimes against the Vichy government. So this is where the guillotine comes in, and thus all the beheadings.

469 To all of the horde,
This 4th of July rings so very different, so very and deeply different from past celebrations of our country's founding.

Why might you ask?

Because we have turned a page. We, as a majority of the voting block have said Hell NO to the Socialist/Marxist creep that has infected our nation especially over the previous 4 years of the Biden/Obama doctrine. We have voted that our REPUBLIC is what matters. And we put this in the hands of one Mr. Donald Trump who promised in his campaign to give new life to our REPUBLIC.

He has delivered on his promises though I am saddened by the riff between him and Elon and I truly hope they can make peace as they are both men who want the best for America

I will now go under the Orange Tree with my wine to watch the fading fireworks of this, a greatest 4th of July.

Night Horde.

472 I hate the thoughtless banalities of government officials in disasters. If your area is flooding, why is it “shelter in place”? Why isn’t it “head for higher elevations now!”? I know it’s easier for government officials to have everyone stay where they are, but that leads to stories like that house that got washed away with everyone in it. I know the roads would be clogged, but that’s when you need to put that off-road gear to work! Flood’s coming! Get to high ground!

Rescued children have been reunited with their families in Texas, but the heartbreak continues as more than 20 children are still missing in the aftermath of the devastating floods in Texas.

School buses and military-style rescue trucks pulled in one by one, carrying frightened, mud-soaked children.

Inside, tearful reunions unfolded as parents clung tightly to their sons and daughters. “I just want to go home,” whispered one child through tears.

One father stood frozen, eyes scanning every bus door, waiting for any sign of his 8- and 10-year-old daughters still lost in the chaos.

Rescue teams haven’t stopped searching.
