  • The US government is planning to breed billions of flesh-eating flies, zap them with radiation, and dump them on Mexico. (CBS)

    Take that, you smug-druggling bastiches!

    ...

Actually, this has been going on for years in Panama. These are New World Screwworm flies, and they are a major problem. The project - which has been keeping them penned up in South America for decades - breeds huge numbers of sterile but otherwise healthy males, which then compete to breed with the females, which produces... Nothing.

But that's the point. It has to be kept up continuously (and has been) but it has drastically reduced their numbers north of the canal since the 1960s. Until recently, when they swarmed and made a break for it.

The fly-factory in Panama currently produces 117 million dead-inside flies per week; the plan is to increase the number of sexual zombies to 400 million per week to outcompete real men. Real flies. Real fly men. You know what I mean.

5 "No official prices so far outside of Taiwan and West Taiwan."

Too bad the potential invasion vector isn't that way.

Taiwan invading West Taiwan was a scenario in https://tinyurl.com/3eb6c6tv (link goes to boardgamegeek.com), but it assumed the Soviets were already invading in the north.

Kinda the reverse of Operation Ichi-Go in WW2.

14 Good morning all y'all, and happy independence day!
Even when a a wee lad, there was something off about shooting firecrackers the first year after day made them illegal in my town. We did it anyway and had a lot of fun. But over the years the outlawing of fireworks has grown and now the entire state has no top bottle rockets allowed anywhere. Anything with a stick that goes up in the air.
I guess that's partly alive remained skeptical of government. Still the greatest country in the world no doubt.
May we recognize God's blessings.

22 I saw The Beach Boys at Madison Square Garden when I was in high school in 19 mumble mumble.

Of course they played "Good Vibrations," and since we were young and poor and were in the nosebleed seats, we got to enjoy the fantastic but terrifying sensation of the third deck bouncing about two feet up and down as the entire crowd of 20,000 danced to the song.

25 I want to recommend this book which I found in a church rummage sale and which was very popular in the 90's. You can probably download it: " Don't Sweat the Small Stuff and it's all small stuff" by Richard Carlson who was a therapist . In a short chapters discusses things like "Set aside quiet time each day" or "Be aware of your moods and don't slow yourself to be fooled by the low ones." The book is only about 200 or so pages and it's not religious although there is a chapter about seeing God in everything . Anyway, it's a sensible book with helpful advice and I hadn't read it before

In the mid-1980s the band was still playing at a very very high level and I got a chance to see them twice in one night at the Paramount theater in Seattle. That bounce beat of theirs translated right into to everybody in the audience and since we were seated on one of mezzanine levels we too got to experience the same thing. The way Brian Wilson handled the backbeat pops people up out of their seats. The next closest band I've ever seen do that is the Mavericks.

37 One more version of Good Vibrations. Brian Wilson's masterpiece, Smile, went unfinished for decades because of too many drugs, mental illness and the people around him. In the late '90s he hired the Wondermints to be his backing band for a live tour of Pet Sounds. This collaboration in turn lead them to the studio to finish Smile. On that album they revisited Good Vibrations with an extended arrangement. It has become my favorite version. Years later, in 2018 if I recall, Brian Wilson, in a very fragile physical shape, did one last big tour with the Wondermints and I was fortunate enough to see the band. It was great stuff. As an epilogue, completing Smile led to Mr. Wilson finding himself again.

The post-world War II pop music was always much much more than that and as the decades have gone on it's quite clear that the best of it rivals music from any century. Mr. Bennett's, work here makes a case for that perspective.

The Beach Boys . . . In '81 they released, and hit the Top 40 with, a medley of their most famous hits; I caught it again on Casey Kasem last Saturday. It made me realize all over again just how good they were. When you listen to a Beach Boys tune, you may not realize it, but you are in good solid hands providing a pop song that you can be sure won't let you down. "Daddy Took Her T-Bird Away," "I Get Around" . . . Great stuff.

53 As an indie developer, that Stop Killing Games initiative is horse shit. We already struggle with people backwards engineering our (very old) product and putting up private servers, even charging for it. Might I add that is no thanks at all to the DMCA hating assholes in Europe, specifically Netherlands, who let them do this.

There is no way we would turn over source code, art, etc for our stuff when we decide we are done. It is a huge labor of love to make a game. This law means well but it is only realistic for big studios. I don’t think they are thinking this through…typical European. Putting too many restrictions on things. It will force many companies to not offer their games there.

56 So later tonight, our neighborhood will gather to celebrate the beginnings of this wonderful nation of ours.

Typically, this involves about $15,000.00 worth of arial fireworks, which almost outdoes what many small towns will expend.

Mrs VIA has finished her very first effort at making an iconic Maryland Peach Cake, and two of them are resting on the stovetop as we speak, Both looking absolutely textbook perfect.

After the morning walk, we will begin the cleaning of stately VIA Manor, in anticipation of roughly 15 neighbors joining us here for the celebration.

Grill is ready. Food is mostly prepared. And three gallons of prepared frozen margarita mix are chilling in the garage fridge before going into the slushy machine at the proper time.

It is a day of celebrating what in my opinion, after setting foot in over 60 countries, is truly the best nation on earth.

Happy Birthday, America!!!!

Wildly different from each other. The Mavericks come up out of Florida and are a mix of Cuban, American '60s rock and roll, some country and Mexican pop music. What is similar is how the band handles the backbeat or bounce beat if you prefer. I think this is a direct consequence of the bandleader having listened more than a couple Beach boys songs. That bounce beat doesn't necessarily come across well in videos on a cell phone or a PC. Having seen them way too many times I can tell you nobody is sitting down at the end of the show.

It was different for me then.
My parents certainly knew my name.

In fact, when I heard dad say my full name, including the middle one, followed by “get your ass in here!”, I knew it was time to either make a break for it, or face the belt.

Unlike my great aunt, who was already in her 70s and 80s by then, would go through about five or six relative’s names before she finally got to my name.

He also plays the victim game very well, and understands the politics of division.

98 I was reading an article about Zo's Family in Uganda. His father's family had been there for over 100 years when he was born. In the article the question was raised if they had ever intermarried with the local Ugandans. The answer was no which I found most interesting. Sounds like they were importing spouses from India. To me, this sounds like that family had a very British relationship with the Ugandans or if you prefer, a rather colonial one.
