The thing that struck me hardest was not the painting but the title. Not "Waiting for His Return" or "Waiting for Father" or some equally detached phrase. Waiting for Dad. It imputes a much closer, emotional relationship than the boy being respectful to the family's breadwinner. Very sweet.

Homer, often using watercolors, achieves an immediacy in his scenes. They aren't static but have the sense of movement, sometimes subtle. In this painting it's the movement of the ships in the distance, the gulls and the flow of the water. That makes the still, steady pose of the little boy the focus of the scene. You don't need to see his face, his posture says it all. The soft colors of sky, sea and sand make the dark rowboat and boy's figure the hard, real part of the image.
There is an emotional aspect to the painting that might not occur to a modern audience but would to viewers in the 1800s: uncertainty. Sailing schedules were not set in stone but faced delays due to water and weather. And it wasn't the safest way to make a living. The child can only wait and hope for his dad to appear. There's an element of a child's faith underlying the image. Posted by: JTB at July 11, 2025 09:55 AM (yTvNw) 130

The Justice Dept is doing something
Friday, July 11, 2025 Office of Public Affairs Today, the Justice Department filed a statement of interest in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in the case of Children’s Health Defense et al. v. Washington Post et al. The lawsuit — led by plaintiffs allegedly deplatformed for sharing independent news and opinion related to the COVID-19 pandemic — alleges that the Washington Post, BBC, AP, and Reuters colluded with one another and with the large digital platforms to suppress competition from independent perspectives that rival mainstream media. The statement of interest explains how the antitrust laws protect viewpoint competition in news markets. Posted by: Kindltot at July 11, 2025 10:03 AM (D7oie) 157

July 11, 1804: Burr – Hamilton Duel:
On July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr met on the dueling grounds at Weehawken, New Jersey, to fight the final skirmish of a long-lived political and personal battle. When the duel was over, Hamilton would be mortally wounded, and Burr would be wanted for murder. I say Make Duels Great Again for members of Congress. 311 Big push on the left that Epstein is Mossad, Israel controls Trump and hence Trump squashed it all.
Posted by: Its Go Time Donald ======= I think there is a pincher movement here. Some want Blondi Bondi gone on the Right. The Left is just trying to damage the Trump administration however it can. Helps to conceal that CA Democrats are supporting child slavery on marijuana growing plantations that are state regulated. That was what ICE found in their latest raid. Also the probability that cartels are involved is pretty high. Posted by: whig at July 11, 2025 10:49 AM (ctrM5) 320

Wife likes a half glass of tea and a half glass of water because it's too sweet. And she's native Texan. Born & raised. Posted by: rickb223 ====== Deep South likes their treacle tea. Often they get dumbfounded there if you ask for unsweet tea--they promptly ask if you want splenda, etc. with it. Often you get sweet tea anyway and have to send it back for unsweet. Tea seems to get less sweet as you move westward though in the South which I grew up in Arkansas and the tea is less sweet there than where I live now. >>Having heard reports that a number of actresses widely considered to be very attractive have bad skin, I'd assume it's for that reason.
Sadly, no. This is a trend popularized by the Kardashians, and they really did steal their make-up contouring* style from drag queens. You prefer women not using this style of make-up because it makes them look fake, and possibly, male. *Uses layers of different flesh-colored base make-up the create the illusion of a differently shaped face (e.g. reduce size of nose, create cheekbones). My grandma didn't drink anything but black coffee or water but she made sweet tea for grandpa. 3 cups of sugar in a gallon of tea.
I used to drink iced tea all day everyday. Hubbymayhem made it with one half cup of sugar per gallon. I quit drinking so much tea and just drink water now except when I'm out for a meal. Then I order a Coke or sweet tea. I used to drink Coke with a breakfast out also because I prefer my caffeine to be cold and I didn't care much for coffee. Now I drink coffee when we go out for breakfast. At home I just drink water. 3. Cups. Of. Sugar. Per gallon. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at July 11, 2025 10:59 AM (2J/Lj) 338
321 Farmed has a higher PCB content if you're looking for variety in your diet.
Posted by: Dark Litigator ========= The greatest risk is by far improper prep and storage at home and the store causing food poisoning. The rest of it, depends on the source. Far East like Thai source, no telling what. Ditto for their shrimp. Salmon farm raised in the US, the greater risk is that the farm has stagnant waterflow resulting in the fish swimming in crap. That requires antibiotics in the feed which can be an issue. Good water flow, no problem. US Farmed raised catfish (or tilapia if you can find it) are superior to those you get out of lakes or rivers--less mud taste. And wild caught can have mercury, sewage, etc. And Chinese sea food harvesting ships probably do not have the best in sanitation either. Place your bets on what you can afford and like but be a discerning consumer. Life is too short for food snobbery or really snobbery of any kind. Posted by: whig at July 11, 2025 11:00 AM (ctrM5) 339

Mel Gibson has really bad acne scars. there is so much technology today that can smooth out the skin: laser resurfacing UV-B treatments sonic wave wands NAD-peptide IV drips... When I used to see how J-Lo and some other hollyweird types were maintaining their youthful look and beauty, (without the weird reconfiguration of surgery), I figured they were privy to some cutting edge youthifying processes. Then lo and behold all the above became available to the proles. Nowadays, it's pretty easy to keep one's looks, even on a middle class budget. Granted, if one is middle class, one may need to forego some other budget items, such as food or A/C in summer, but hey...what price beauty?? Posted by: kallisto at July 11, 2025 11:00 AM (dCxaZ) 341

What the headlines and reporting doesn't tell you until the end is that they were not patients but rather ran in there from the parking lot after confronted by ICE .
