28 The thing that struck me hardest was not the painting but the title. Not "Waiting for His Return" or "Waiting for Father" or some equally detached phrase. Waiting for Dad. It imputes a much closer, emotional relationship than the boy being respectful to the family's breadwinner. Very sweet.

But lovely painting, too.

My own Dad started fishing during the summers with his father when he was in his early teens. Had the chiseled physique to show for it, too.

The fish tug in which they earned their living has been preserved through the graces of a family friend and now is part of a historical museum in the Midwest.

Friday's usually busy. Today was extra busy. We visited one of our pup couple's in their new home rental. Then back to Jerusalem and spent the afternoon cooking chicken and prepping sashimi.

Almost 5PM and only now are we enjoying our afternoon stove top brewed Columbian coffee.

And now off I go till tomorrow night.

129 Homer, often using watercolors, achieves an immediacy in his scenes. They aren't static but have the sense of movement, sometimes subtle. In this painting it's the movement of the ships in the distance, the gulls and the flow of the water. That makes the still, steady pose of the little boy the focus of the scene. You don't need to see his face, his posture says it all. The soft colors of sky, sea and sand make the dark rowboat and boy's figure the hard, real part of the image.

There is an emotional aspect to the painting that might not occur to a modern audience but would to viewers in the 1800s: uncertainty. Sailing schedules were not set in stone but faced delays due to water and weather. And it wasn't the safest way to make a living. The child can only wait and hope for his dad to appear. There's an element of a child's faith underlying the image.

The temporary marriage gig is a Shia thing. Not Sunni. The idea is fornication is a worse sin than divorcing. In a static culture that has a bunch of thirsty males, I'd imagine that custom came about for social stability. Sort of like legalizing weed here.

I am speculating but I read stories back in the day about the transition to hi res TV and its affect on makeup for the newsreaders, actors, etc. Basically hi rez shows every single blemish and imperfection to an unflattering degree. So pancake makeup had to get a lot thicker to hide the various bumps, skin imperfections, incipient mustaches, 5 o'clock shadow, etc.

I do know that a LOT of filtering is now being used on camera feeds as well.

I am partial to Portuguese red clam chowder over the traditional creamy NE style. A great place where you can get both is Cedar Key, FL. A slice of FL before its Disneyfication.

Due to changes caused by new fishing regulations, the fishing folks there went into cultivating clams on claims in the ocean. Fed by the Suwannee River emptying nutrients into the Gulf.

I prefer wild caught. But to keep prices down, flash frozen wild caught makes seafood reasonable. Krogers, if you have one around you, has decent prices on frozen wild caught seafood.

I've found frozen seafood is not so great if you want to bread it to deep or pan fry but it takes well to steaming in something like a pressure cooker or grilling.

I think that fact is definitely not in question by me. I started drinking coffee at about 10-11 years old drinking smooth blends and my mother always preferred unsweet iced tea so I got that from her.

Family gatherings always had the treacly sweet tea which I hated. Like Kool Aid or Lemonade better than that.

312 Since I'm "land locked" here in KY, most, if not all of our seafood is either previously frozen, or frozen. There's a market that's only open a couple days a week that has "fresh" seafood from the Gulf. I've had some fish and shrimp from there and it is better that what they have at Kroger's.

Deep South likes their treacle tea. Often they get dumbfounded there if you ask for unsweet tea--they promptly ask if you want splenda, etc. with it. Often you get sweet tea anyway and have to send it back for unsweet.

Tea seems to get less sweet as you move westward though in the South which I grew up in Arkansas and the tea is less sweet there than where I live now.

I used to drink iced tea all day everyday. Hubbymayhem made it with one half cup of sugar per gallon. I quit drinking so much tea and just drink water now except when I'm out for a meal. Then I order a Coke or sweet tea.
I used to drink Coke with a breakfast out also because I prefer my caffeine to be cold and I didn't care much for coffee. Now I drink coffee when we go out for breakfast. At home I just drink water.

The greatest risk is by far improper prep and storage at home and the store causing food poisoning.

The rest of it, depends on the source. Far East like Thai source, no telling what. Ditto for their shrimp. Salmon farm raised in the US, the greater risk is that the farm has stagnant waterflow resulting in the fish swimming in crap. That requires antibiotics in the feed which can be an issue. Good water flow, no problem.

US Farmed raised catfish (or tilapia if you can find it) are superior to those you get out of lakes or rivers--less mud taste.

And wild caught can have mercury, sewage, etc. And Chinese sea food harvesting ships probably do not have the best in sanitation either.

Place your bets on what you can afford and like but be a discerning consumer.

Life is too short for food snobbery or really snobbery of any kind.
