Congress has officially passed President Donald Trump's "one big, beautiful bill" on Thursday afternoon after back-to-back sleepless sessions for both the House and Senate. The massive agenda bill now goes to Trump's desk to be signed into law just in time for Republicans' self-imposed Fourth of July deadline. The bill -- which advances Trump's policies on tax, the border, defense, energy and the national debt -- narrowly passed the House of Representatives in a mostly party-line vote. It's a commanding victory for Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and for the president himself, both of whom spent hours overnight trying to persuade GOP critics of the bill. "The President is very engaged. He was very helpful in the process. He helped answer questions and articulate his vision and what this bill will mean for the country, and his agenda, and how urgent it is for us to get it done," Johnson told reporters the morning ahead of the vote. The House initially passed its version of the legislation by just one vote in late May.

Yep and the Covid, Afghan, Obama, and Biden stimulus packages are no longer considered authority for any future spending.
Plus, the debt ceiling is put off until after the next election. That means Trump can focus like a laser on next fiscal year to change Obamacare and Medicare entitlements for the better in next year's reconciliation bill. Speaker Johnson was discussing two reconciliation bills in the House but I think those would have to be combined in the Senate into one bill. IIRC, the 74 Budget Act interpreted by Senate rules only permits two of those per Congress for the Senate at least.

No. The illegals can get Medicaid but Uncle Sam is not obligated to give one penny toward that extension. Medicaid is a grant match system where the state puts up a percent (original was 50 percent but less now) and the feds put up the rest. Now that illegals are excluded from the fed share, the states that do that shit will have to find the money for it themselves and they cannot do the old Medicaid scam tax to do it now.
On the SS, last reported was a 4000 deduction that phases out as one's income is greater than 75k for an individual or 150k for a couple. Those on SSI don't pay taxes anyway . Those that retired earlier than 65 don't apparently get the deduction as well.

Actually it hurts the NFA constitutionally in the Court regarding suppressors and SBRs by a) lowering the tax to zero making it solely a registration requirement. And two, it will increase the number of suppressors and sbrs to the point that they become a firearm in common use.
Byrd rule was always going to be a problem including that in a reconciliation package because any spending/tax changes that are not considered primarily fiscal can be objected to by a point of order citing the Byrd rule. That means 60 votes required.
Ultimately, if you want a vibrant 2A, you gotta have the political branches on board with it. Courts alone will not save you.

How much is this rescinded? I'm not sure. Hard to find.
But, the way I read it, it rescinds all unspent money from the Inflation Reduction Act.

1) House passes a bill after dickering back and forth.
2) Senate dickers back and forth, takes stuff out, puts stuff in. Sends it back to the house.
3) House decides whether to pass.

I assumed it would pass when it passed the Senate. The problem for a lot of defectors is that a) the spotlight was on them, and b) the primary commercials for opponents could be cut that they voted for tax increases if the Trump tax cuts expired.
Cramming in the debt ceiling increase (not actual debt as usually reported) also cuts off asshole renegades trying to leverage that in the next 18 months or so for geegaws or forcing the GOP to get Dem votes at an exorbitant price to pass it.
Now we can see if those posing as fiscal conservatives actual start voting for rescission bills that were impossible by law before this bill passed.
Essentially it was an omnibus bill with tax provisions and some cuts added to it. Reconciliation requires only entitlement changes apart from Social Security can be made.
Rescission bills address the DOGE cuts in discretionary spending and cannot be filibustered either. NPR and planned parenthood rescission bill has already passed the House and now the Senate can do it.

No, the bill isn't perfect, it has lots of flaws, but the damage that would have been done to Trump and the GOP in general had the bill failed would have been far worse.
Trump has momentum. This keeps it.
The media will try to paint the bill as a boogyman, but Trump loves the bully pulpit. He will be loud and clear about the benefits. Tying it in with fourth of july festivities is just icing on the cake.
Next year is America's 250th birthday, just before midterms. Hopefully an even better bill hits Trump's desk by then.
(Yes, I'm assuming Congress only delivers one major piece of legislation a year).

The origination clause only applies to tax and spending bills. House has the first mover advantage albeit there are some workarounds as the Dems did in Obamacare. We have a bicameral legislature as 49 states do where the House and Senate must agree on the text of the legislation and then submit it to the president/governor.

Trump is not big on spending cuts except as a way to put a thumb in the eye of the people he hates. But he DOES want to massively increase the economy and brig in revenues through tariffs that can chip away a little at the debt from that side, which is something at least. its what he can do without congress, because they clearly won't do what they have to.

There's some playacting going on. If things were as black and white as they appear, Trump would have already filed a defamation suit on the Epstein comments. Musk needs to distance himself to increase his customer base on his wealth of businesses (most importantly, TESLA). And, one might suggest his comments talking about a third party was an attempt to move some Democrats across the line to vote for the Spending package with the hopes of derailing the Republican party.
I'm not convinced that Musk's little tantrums aren't street theater. Both Trump and Musk get a kick out of playing the media and their political opponents. That hasn't changed.

You may or may not know this but you have to have a budget in place in order to cut discretionary spending by rescission legislation. The BBB has returned the legislature to regular order via omnibus and killed past CR authorizations dating back to 2010. House has already passed one rescission bill defunding Planned Parenthood and PBS/NPR cutting about 9 billion.
Regarding the Byrd rule, 60 votes were required for any changes to discretionary spending so only entitlement spending like Medicaid (cut plus work requirements-no fed money for illegals), Medicare (left untouched mostly), and Social security cannot be done by reconciliation at all.
So defunding NASA, getting rid of DoE, etc have to be done via rescission bills or regular bills subject to a filibuster, not by reconciliation. But you have to have a budget bill passed to allow that. That has now been done. That saves one more reconciliation bill next term

The tax credit says anyone over 65 gets the $6,000 credit ($12,000 for married couples) in addition to all other current credits. So the wife and I are going to get another $12,000 credit on our income tax this year it appears. If I am reading that right our federal tax owed is going to go down significantly.

I know that people often have lunches for family and friends after a funeral which seems like quite a normal thing and nice for people to get together and reminiscen. It was the idea of people chomping away while in a funeral procession that seemed odd. Also sounded rather old fashioned too. As if it were a horse drawn hearse followed by people in black like something from Victorian times and chomping away on what-ices creams with a picture of the deceased in the wrapper?

Nope. Elon was pissed because he wanted it like how he gutted Twitter.
But that isn't politics,and especially not DC. The whole system is set up to not allow cuts. Now you have made the system allow cuts. Now you need to start getting them. Musk shot himself in the foot, because now his exhortations to pass spending bills have less impact.
He had a tantrum. He's brilliant, but he is on the spectrum and let his emotions get the better of him. I'm sure he will get over it.
