Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Report — 7/ 2 /25![]() The Senate began what is known as a vote-a-rama on Monday morning — a rapid series of votes on dozens of proposed amendments to Trump’s big, beautiful spending bill. As of 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the vote-a-rama was still ongoing. One of the most disappointing results came on a measure seeking to block illegal immigrants from receiving Medicaid benefits, which failed by a vote of 56–44. Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough had previously determined that the “Byrd Rule” applied in this case. Because a reconciliation bill — a type of budget bill — requires only a simple majority of 51 votes for passage, the Byrd Rule imposes restrictions on what provisions can be included. Measures deemed to be “extraneous” to the budget must secure a supermajority of 60 votes to pass. As a result, the proposal to remove undocumented immigrants from Medicaid failed by just four votes. . . If it weren’t for the Senate Parliamentarian’s interference, this vote would’ve succeeded with just 51 votes. pic.twitter.com/7eztg2RicEYeah, we can blame this Cunning Runt parliamentarian (transpose the C and the R) all we want, but the fact remains, the Wetbacks get our money when they should be running "Serpentine!" in Alligator Alcatraz. Meh, keep the Medicaid, send Murkowski, Collins and Thune there. Or strap them to a MOP and drop them onto the FOrdow Foundation! Look, God bless President Trump and for the miracle of his victory last November and for his amazing accomplishments here and abroad in just six months. But if I'm out of line about the criticism of this bill, I'm open to any reasonable argument as to why. And what's up with the President's position on illegal aliens vis a vis farm and hospitality workers? They get dispensation because why? It was a great decision on his part, to show mercy to farmers, whose crops would be rotting in the fields in short order if every farm worker had to be in pristine immigration status. Crops need to be harvested immediately or there are no crops. Like food shortages? No farmers, no food.Yeah, I get it. While I suppose it does avoid temporary short-term pain as well as political blowback if shortages mess up a booming economy. But then again, the whole point as he and others have been touting is the creation of jobs for Americans. No pain no gain. It also allows his enemies to paint him as a hypocrite and ridicule a key component of the MAGA agenda. Perhaps to be charitable it's a strategic retreat. Elsewhere, Los Angeles is continuing its devolution with anti-ICE demonstrations that Karen Bass-tard is doing nothing about and/or encouraging. And we did capture an Iranian spy scoping out Jewish targets for mass murder attacks, along with some Chi-COm spies. Meanwhile, the rise of this Mamdani momzer in NYC is causing the relatively sane among the Democrat base in NYC and nationally to be freaking out. Why, I have no idea, because the conventional wisdom is that this maniac is where the Democrat Party has been heading for decades. The objection is not necessarily his policies and worldview, it's the fact that he's open and honest about it that is causing the Dems to freak out. They win when they pretend to be as American as apple pie, hot dogs and Chevrolet (and can make their election thievery look kosher). Whose Side Are Democrats Really On? . . . Cheering for the enemy It's not that the Democrats are on the side of the enemy, It's that the Democrats have been America's greatest enemy for two centuries and counting. Mamdani? Everywhere you turn it's Mamdanis all the way down. Boston Muslim Illegal Alien Councilwoman Replaces July 4th Before Going to Prison. . . July in Boston will now be Cabo Verde Independence Month. With that admission, I still feel that perhaps a corollary to the revolting 'We have to shred the Constitution in order to preserve the Constitution: We have to borrow and spend trillions in order to stop borrowing and spending trillions?
Balancing the budget in one go would require cutting at least 1/3 of all federal spending. More, really, since we want to spend money on border security, re-vitalizing the military, refilling the SPR, and, maybe, some actual infrastructure. It's not going to happen. Any member of Congress who voted to do it would lose their seat. While I join your unhappiness with going even further into debt, we didn't get in this mess overnight, we won't escape overnight. Frankly, what we should push for, is cutting some every year. Let the economy improve for a year... cut spending... let the economy improve for a year... cut spending. From a purely pragmatic political perspective, allowing the farm & restaurant working illegals to stay is a good play.
Trump has mainly focused on deporting the criminals anyhow. Does he want as many illegals out, violent criminals or not? Yes. Does he want to hit the economy while doing it? No. So Homan is focusing on the criminals, and nabbing any incidental aliens around when they get the criminals. Also, ICE doing various busts at businesses around the country used to be a regular thing. But it was always hit or miss and never a massive effort. Now they’re doing that again, which may make some of these operations think twice about who they’re hiring. I’ve also seen some mention of a new guest visa/permit system for seasonal farm labor that DHS & State are thinking about doing for these cases. The thing that gets me is why we just don't do what is done in every other country. Bribe the votes we want. These criminals are going to steal from us. It is no secret that Congress is an open extortion game. So instead of pretending, just have an open auction for votes. Stand out on the front steps and have senators just tell us what the hell they want in order to vote a certain way. If they announce a price too large, well, some of the more violent third world cultures have a way of extracting the vote they want. If there's a silver lining to the budget circus it's that what DOGE uncovered illustrated just how corrupt FedGov really is and why our 'elected' officials are uninterested in cutting the federal budget. It's their primary pipeline for graft. It's why every politico is a multi-millionaire.
And they all owe favors to someone else who isn't interested in what you want from government. Fixing all this is with the tools at our disposal is like trying to fix the space station with masking tape and a screwdriver from here on Earth. I think once people begin to understand the scope of the problem some potential solutions outside the existing system will be needed. Posted by: Martini Farmer at July 02, 2025 08:05 AM (Q4IgG) 85

This is a misleading headline. 56 Senators voted to end the coverage but, thanks to the Parliamentarian - and the GOP's unwillingness to override her, they required 60 votes to move forward with that provision.
So everyone is off the hook and zero responsibility. We can't even name Elizabeth MacDonough, but refer to an anonymous title "Senate Parliamentarian". Then we let Lizzy off the hook because she could have been overriden, but we won't name the phuquer who could have overridden her because, the pursuit of zero responsibility. We won't even mention that a simple majority vote by the Republicans could have overridden her, because, again, the cowardly path of Zero Accountability. So we are stuck with some criminally stupid scam to confiscate hard earned money (in taxes and currency devaluation) to give to animals who shouldn't even be in this country, let alone racking up billions in medical costs in allready overloaded hospitals. The language amends Title XIX of the Social Security Act to ensure that no medical assistance is provided under Medicaid to individuals not lawfully admitted for permanent residence, except for emergency services... The Cornyn amendment, which would have penalized states for offering broader benefits, failed due to a 60-vote threshold. But the core ban on Medicaid for illegal immigrants remains intact in the final bill. That means states cannot use federal Medicaid dollars to cover illegal immigrants, except in emergencies." 56 From a purely pragmatic political perspective, allowing the farm & restaurant working illegals to stay is a good play.
Trump has mainly focused on deporting the criminals anyhow. Does he want as many illegals out, violent criminals or not? Yes. Does he want to hit the economy while doing it? No.” Agree - and also, in the past, farm workers were a majority of illegals, but today they are not. The problem today are the hordes packed into the major cities like LA, soaking up government benefits, gaining political power. Focus there, farm workers can wait til the biggest part of the problem is fixed. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 02, 2025 08:17 AM (0DdMG) 142

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at July 02, 2025 07:45 AM (x0n13) No. One can infer that we, as a nation, are no longer capable of accepting discomfort. In several states, government benefits pay better than starting jobs... so why work? Or, if you do work, do it under the table so you can "get your bag". While it would be great to be able to snap our fingers and have everything fixed, it just won't happen. We have to wean the nation's over-18 infants off the federal teat. Sucks. The love of the Silent Generation, and the Greatest Generation, and the Boomers (and I say this as an end stage Boomer), for ever expanding government has royally fucked the nation and will require decades of hard work to recover. So, illegals will not get Medicaid anymore - that's in the bill.
Apparently, the Senate, in its infinite wisdom, had an amendment to get folks on record on the issue that had nothing to do with changing the bill. That's what failed 56-44. Stupid messaging but I guess in 2026, they want exact voting on the single issue to sell. So, the bill keeps me from a huge tax hike this year (and now permanently vs 2017's cuts), it gets illegals off Medicaid and other government services, and gives Trump the ability and money to keep kicking them out - more wins then we've had in ages in Washington. Posted by: Smell the Glove at July 02, 2025 08:26 AM (eBgDF) 165
So, the bill keeps me from a huge tax hike this year (and now permanently vs 2017's cuts), it gets illegals off Medicaid and other government services, and gives Trump the ability and money to keep kicking them out - more wins then we've had in ages in Washington.
Given this Congress, I seriously doubt that illegals are off of Medicaid. I am happy that I'm not looking at massive tax hikes and that the only functioning appointment by Trump other than RFK, Tom Homan, is going to get a huge boost in help. I'll take the wins. I expect treachery and sedition by Congress. Totally surprised we even got what we did. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at July 02, 2025 08:26 AM (a4flb) 166
Most farm workers from Mexico aren't illegals. They have the right paperwork because the farm that hires them handles that stuff. Work the season, leave when you're done. "Only Illegals pick lettuce" is a fake meme from the swamp meant to manipulate the public. Illegals who live here year round don't pick lettuce, they go live in cities and suburbs and work in the service industry.
No one is gonna starve if we kick out illegals. It's a meaningless distraction. So lean into it and use their meaningless distraction against them at no risk. It's a cheap win. Posted by: Warai-otoko at July 02, 2025 08:26 AM (BjH5D) 167

Just when you think you've heard it all, this shows up: F-35s cannot carry external fuel tanks! Drop or CFTs.
https://tinyurl.com/3dwku7kc "Range-extending external fuel tanks for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter have re-emerged as part of the ongoing Block 4 modernization effort for those aircraft, years after a requirement for streamlined drop tanks was eliminated. More recently, the Israelis reportedly did additional work on drop tanks, as well as conformal fuel tanks (CFT), for the F-35I variant. External tanks could be especially important for carrier-based F-35Cs in service with the U.S. Navy, now that the service’s plans for a longer-ranged F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter are set to be put on hold. "The U.S. Air Force is requesting funds to explore adding external fuel tanks to the F-35 in its proposed budget for the 2026 Fiscal Year. The current combat radius of the land-based F-35A is generally stated to be around 670 nautical miles (close to 1,241 kilometers). The reach of the carrier-based F-35C variant is slightly longer, while that of the short-takeoff and vertical-landing capable F-35B version is significantly shorter. All F-35s can also be refueled in flight." Posted by: Gref at July 02, 2025 08:52 AM (aBgBM) 268

Survival Level tasks required for Trump when he was inaugurated:
1) Cleaning up and reforming Pentagon, State Dept, DOJ, FBI, CIA - failing to do this well cost Trump his first term. 2) catching a break from SCOTUS limiting the lawfare - this just happened, still work to do. 3) dealing with foreign threats around the world , and ending at least some wars - extremely successful. 4) stopping and reversing the flood of immigrants - his best success. 5) extending the tax cuts and saving the economy - BBB with all of its flaws does that. Of course there are very many other things that can and should be done, but after those they’re just icing on the cake. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 02, 2025 08:57 AM (0DdMG) 278

Paramount said late Tuesday that it has agreed to pay President Trump $16 million to settle his lawsuit over the editing of an interview on the CBS News program “60 Minutes,” an extraordinary concession to a sitting president by a major media organization. … Paramount said its payment includes Mr. Trump’s legal fees and costs and that the money, minus the legal fees, will be paid to Mr. Trump’s future presidential library.
As part of the settlement, Paramount said that it had agreed to release written transcripts of future “60 Minutes” interviews with presidential candidates. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has a condition known as 5-alpha reductase deficiency. He has XY chromosomes. The enzyme deficiency keeps him from converting testosterone (which his body produces in normal amounts) to 5⍺-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT plays a crucial role in fetal development of male genitalia. Deficiency can result in underdeveloped male sex organs (small penis, hypospadias, pseudo-vagina, etc.) so that the external appearance can be ambiguous. But the XY chromosomes and the normal testosterone levels allow for more typical male musculoskeletal development during puberty. This is what gives Khelif an advantage over biologically female boxers.
This condition is very rare, probably only a few hundred in the entire world. It occurs more commonly in areas with high consanguinity rates (in-breeding). Just because he has weird looking penis doesn't mean he has a right to beat up on girls. Posted by: muldoon at July 02, 2025 09:12 AM (poXs5) 335

Even if we could somehow magically balance the budget it would do nothing to address the debt. We would need a minimum of $2 trillion a year in surplus just to start addressing the debt.
--- People who's largest debt in their life time, a house of some $200-$500k, are not going to understand how "saving money" or "living within your means" will never pay off $38 trillion. That's what's retarded about 1) demanding a balanced budget and 2) demanding massive spending cuts. There is one--and only one way--to pay off that massive a debt: Massive growth in revenue.
TJM, I watched a movie last night that may have out ghost shipped Ghost Ship. Its called Sahara staring Matthew McConaughey. This movie is one ridiculous sub plot to a ridiculous plot after another. The funny part was I enjoyed it. It also mined every vein in the mine of Action Adventure. It seems the script writers could not contain themselves. Oh, and it opens with the idea that a Confederate Iron Clad sailed across the Atlantic to West Africa loaded with Confederate gold.

The US is in an interesting place in regards to at what point a default happens.
Since we are the reserve currency people still trust we'll pay off the debt (how I don't know). When people lose that trust and start demanding much higher interest rates because of the risk of default then we'll enter a spiral that can't be stopped. But we aren't at that point yet. Posted by: Count de Monet at July 02, 2025 08:05 AM Kroger has announced plans to close approximately 60 stores across the U.S. over the next 18 months, starting from June 2025, as part of a strategy to improve profitability by shuttering underperforming locations. Below is a list of some confirmed store closures based on available information: Grok: https://bit.ly/4nuznCl Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 02, 2025 11:07 AM (P5BPp) 464
But the core ban on Medicaid for illegal immigrants remains intact in the final bill.
That means states cannot use federal Medicaid dollars to cover illegal immigrants, except in emergencies." Posted by: runner at July 02, 2025 08:10 AM Does the Big Beautiful Bill ban illegal aliens from Medicaid? The "Big Beautiful Bill" does not explicitly ban undocumented immigrants from Medicaid because they are already ineligible for federally funded Medicaid under current U.S. law. However, the bill includes provisions that aim to further restrict Medicaid eligibility, potentially affecting immigrants, including some with legal status, by tightening rules or reducing federal funding to states that provide health care to certain immigrants. Grok: https://bit.ly/45RY70X "Already ineligible". Which, as I posted yesterday, means that all these laws are meaningless unless there is someone in a position of authority with the will to enforce them. As has NOT been happening for decades. You’re wrong about Thune, JJ.
Trump likes him. He’s hitting home runs. From Stephen Miller last night;: Stephen Miller @StephenM The Senate bill cuts more spending than the House bill. Funds more border security. And is a more conservative bill. To some of my conservative friends: it’s OK to win. Winning is good. In fact, winning is the only way to save civilization.
