Wokeness and Brokeness

The common refrain among many regarding poor corporate performance when it correlates with knee-jerk, all-in wokeness is "get woke, go broke." It's sometimes true, but it's often the exact opposite. It is not unheard for essentially healthy companies to go through the "Woke Pivot." When that happens, results are mixed. For Gillette and Bud Light, it is certain that their lurches into contemporary leftist ideology and marketing caused catastrophic and irreparable damage to their brands. Others have had a different experience. Nike and Target were both early boarders of the woke train, and it doesn't appear to have hurt them. It's now part of the brand identity.

But otherwise healthy companies jumping into wokeness with both feet is somewhat unusual. Often, it's more of a high-risk gambit to turn things around. Companies or brands will go through a Woke Pivot in response to structural problems in their businesses. This is almost certainly behind Victoria's Secret's disastrous leftward lurch. For companies like VS, it isn't a matter of "get woke, go broke" - it's a matter of "go broke, get woke." So, too, is likely the case with Jaguar.

As Ace covered yesterday (standard warning: don't comment on old posts), Jaguar has seen a total sales collapse in Europe as compared to last year. Last year's weak performance was followed by this year's disastrous performance. People are pointing at last year's equally disastrous ultra-woke, ultra-stupid, ultra-poorly-timed and extremely loud Woke Pivot as a major cause. It might be - but there's more to this story. From the Daily Caller article:

Jaguar's European sales plummeted by 97.5% and year-to-date figures show a 75.1% decline in sales, with just 2,665 units sold from January to April 2025. Globally, Jaguar's performance dropped sharply from 180,833 units in 2018 to 26,862 units in FY24/25, holding a market share of just 0.1% in both Australia and the U.K.

So European sales were an unmitigated disaster, but worldwide saw nowhere near the declines that Europe did - but declining they are, and across the board.

So how common is this? I decided to look at a decade's worth of Jaguar/Land Rover (JLR) annual reports and the chart of global Jaguar units sold (taken from the summary of each year's report) paints a stark picture:

With the exception of a modest bump last year, Jaguar's sales have been collapsing since 2018. Jaguar is a dying brand. It's also doing other dumb things many others have mentioned (going all-EV at precisely the wrong time, just at it went all-woke at precisely the wrong time, etc.), but the core problem is that people aren't buying Jags anymore. This year's sales decline and the European sales catastrophe - while notable and extremely dramatic - is just an acceleration of the long-existing trend. The car-buying market has no love for Jaguar, and its sales reflect that.

So they tried for the Woke Pivot. Facing brutal sales declines, an engineering pipeline focused entirely on EV powertrains, shifting market preferences and various other issues, Jaguar made a different play. It is a common and downright normal play: make a lot of noise, do something they think will shock the squares, and go hard at prog messaging in the hopes of bringing in new customers to replace their old customers. It didn't work, and almost certainly made things worse.

From what I could find, Jaguar's customers are, for the most part, well-to-do people who are solidly into - or even on the cusp of exiting - middle age. More men than women buy (or, rather, bought) Jags. With their traditional market of well-off middle-aged men and their wives drying up, they tried to bring in young people and women, and did it in the stupidest way possible - by alienating their core customers and turning themselves into a laughingstock. This was never going to work anyway (young people, by and large, can't afford Jags), but the way they pursued it was also perhaps the most destructive and dumbest way available to them. Alienating your core customers is never likely to get new customers to beat a path to your door.

But like so many companies, Jag is not an example of "get woke, go broke." They were going broke, so decided to get woke. As usual, it didn't work.

5 It's always at the margins where gains are to be made... but to alienate one's natural customer demographic for the sake of a "margin" that shocks and offends nearly everyone -- AND that isn't very likely to buy a Jag in the first place -- is sheer lunacy. This is very, very close to the New Coke case study.

Coke's marketing research told them over and over again that they'd lose 10% of their customers. Again and again, those customers were shown to be the most loyal customers.

But, they figured it was just 10%, the name was enough, the taste would make up for it, and they'd bring in new customers with it.

Well, that 10% bought a very, very large, outsized amount of Coke.

There was no new market. They were already Pepsi drinkers.

43 Jag's sales collapsed because they have no cars to sell. Literally no cars in the case of Europe. The company cut off its nuts by abandoning all ICE vehicles in favor of some all-EV fantasy.

The company won't exist in 3-5 years. Jag's been on death's door for as long as I can remember. So far, it's always found some foolish sugar daddy to rescue it. But at least then it had actual vehicles to sell. No more.

The market for expensive and exotic vehicles has coalesced around a few companies, mostly German. The expensive Brit brands are all dead or dying, with the exception of Land Rover and Bentley and Rolls (which are both German). The expensive French brands are long dead.

The only exotic Italian brands doing well is Ferrari (which is really more a "brand" than an actual car) and Lamborghini. And Lambos are German cars designed and built with the might of VW Group behind them.

Target has hit a brick wall recently (stock down 25 percent from 2024) and now the decline of Pride merchandise etc has provoked a boycott on the left. Nike's stock price over the last five years has went from a peak of 170 or so in 2021 to the upper 70's nowadays.

Nike ain't doing so well either. (from Yahoo Finance) "Nike said Thursday it expects sales to be down by mid-single digits in the current quarter following a 12% drop in revenue during its fiscal fourth quarter ended May 31.

Gross margins fell by 440 basis points, or 4.4%, in its fourth quarter and are forecast to fall by 350-425 basis points in the current quarter."

Both are mature companies without much room for growth and Nike in particular is at risk for its continuing support for gender transing. They refuse to talk about that financial support for research into surgeries and meds for transing as well for nearly 70 days. Fox online actually has a running comment on it.

It's interesting that marketing has gotten so bad that they'll teach the New Coke case study as something to not do and then demand all of the actions of New Coke for every major corporation.

It demonstrates a deeply stupid approach to teaching and application.

We can argue all day about how effective good ad buys are, but directly misapplying market research lessons from the example of the 80s of bad market research decisions is...so weird.

In fairness to Zoomers, this is more of a Millennial problem than a Gen Z problem. The oldest Zoomers turn 28 this year, and many are still in high school or even middle school.

The polling seems to show that a subset of Zoomers are indeed extremely woke and retarded (and usually also "Queer" or trans or whatever), but the average Zoomer is much less of a leftist hivemind drone than Millennials.

85 Tata, which currently owns Jaguar, is one of the largest car companies in the world (mostly 3rd world sales) and they don't display this kind of idiocy with their other brands. So it makes one wonder if they are trying to intentionally tank Jaguar and turn it into a dead nameplate that they own, although I can't fathom the reason that they would do that.

When I searched for this topic, a new electric battery plant, subsidized by the UK and supposed to be ready in 2026, seemed to be related. If Jaguar and the EV industry collapse before then, it's very unlikely that the plant will ever open. I wonder if Tata found a way to siphon some of the construction money out ahead of time.

It's just not very.

Diminishing returns over certain dollars spent based on the size of the market, saturation of the product.

But it's in no one's interest doing the research to let Coke know that. They still need to spend $1 billion a year on ads across the globe, or whatever, because without it, the existing marketing infrastructure collapses.

178 Jaguar had cachet way back when. Then they were bought by TaTa Motors, an Indian company. Say what you will about their build quality, an Indian company just doesn't carry the same aura of class and exclusivity, and if those attributes are what you're selling, you're dead.

It's more complicated than that.

Land Rover, the other half of Jaguar-Land Rover, has the best cachet they've ever had. In my area (upper middle class suburban Baltimore) seemingly every arm-candy Karen is driving one now.

The actual problem is that the US market is basically all SUVs and CUVs. Any luxury sedan that isn't the Mercedes S-Class largely doesn't sell now. The Lexus IS and LS are likely going away entirely because of that (and also because current nepo baby of record Akio Toyoda doesn't want Toyota to make nice cars that don't have the family name on them).

What killed Jag was that the brand -- especially in America -- just lost its prestige, especially among younger buyers. Jag was selling the same cars as Land Rover, but LR was drastically outselling Jag. Why? Jag was yesterday's news.

Buyers of expensive and exotic cars are very interested in the prestige of the brand. They want something that the guy across the street doesn't have.

That's why a Lambo Urus sells for $150k more than an Audi Q8, despite being almost exactly the same car. They are 95% mechanically identical, and even look similar. People are willing to pay huge money just to have a dancing bull logo on their hood.

And even within the same brands, that's why $50k paint colors sell. The guy who buys a Lambo wants his in a color that the other guys with Lambos at his golf club doesn't have. I very much know the type.

Rolls' sales numbers decreased, but their sales revenue increased. They have deliberately concentrated more on their custom "personalized" services. Customers basically built their own cars in terms of colors, interior trim, etc. You can literally say "I don't like that trim piece in that color, I want it in gay polka dots," and they will do it for you. For a very steep price.

So Rolls sells fewer cars, but at much higher prices.

I actually misspoke, GA has a State Board of Pardons and Parole rather than direct executive power to pardon. But Kemp by now has appointed most of the members to it.

I am not sure that the 'hate' crime regarding what they did could be punished as it does not appear to comply with Scotus rulings on 'hate' crime enhancement which dealt with more serious assault, murder, etc. cases, not burning rubber on a symbol.

Yes, VW is being smart about it. The Conti looks nothing like a Panny, and isn't even in the same market. VW is reusing a lot of the same platforms and tech, but they are hiding it from you. Thomas Kuhn's paradigm theory was in vogue for awhile in the social sciences but was never adopted by STEM as applicable. But, it applies to them because scientists and engineers are people too with all the virtues and vices of humanity in general.

Revolutions in science generally come from the young who are willing to challenge past assumptions, not from tired old farts heading to retirement.

It is our misfortune that NIH and NSF consistently have demonstrated hive mind on certain topics (string theory, Alzheimer's plaque theory, origins of Covid, Global Warming, etc. etc.) that reinforce the current theory du jour at the expense of real scientific progress that could undercut that theory. (causing career, money, and mental anguish).

Radical movements and cults have always focused on younger women, especially in the 13-18 range. There's something about girls at that age that makes them very susceptible to indoctrination. And once you get them, they're yours for life.

I suspect girls at that age are hard-wired to find mates and start families. If you can deny them that, and/or offer an easy substitute "family" (like a cult), you can get them to do anything for it.

The commie obsession with Pinochet amuses me. He only liquidated about 10k commie cocksuckers in his whole time in office, the vast majority were in the couple of months after he assumed power.
