Thomas Massie votes against all spending bills because he wants to be able to fundraise off of that questionable honor.

I've been reading Howard Chapelle's very detailed 1949 History of the American Sailing Navy, and it's striking how worthless libertarians have been right from the get-go. Jefferson was against a navy, but then used the one Adams and the Federalists had built in a very incompetent way to fight the Barbary Pirates. But he and Madison (pre-1812, Madison changed his tune later) wouldn't build anymore frigates or sloops. No sir. They built really tiny gunboats as some sort of waterborne equivalent to the state militias they had such a hard-on for.
I'm beginning to suspect that libertarianism going back to the anti-federalists is just an excuse in doing nothing and feeling virtuous about it at best, and a sort of non-Marxist escape from reality at worst.

And then Obama won, spending continued out of control, covid happened, spending went wild, Biden got elected, spending went even wilder, and the country still isn't bankrupt.
And I don't think 2012 really meant that people truly cared about the deficit. It was more of a partisan thing to attack Obama with.

I would probably like Massie more if I saw evidence of consistency in principle. I give Rand Paul a pass on all this because he has consistently stood against spending and debt limit increases -- it's practically his whole brand. He's no ally to the Democrats.

This bill isn’t perfect. I also believe there are a few seats we should go after from people who bent us over a barrel to spend more than we should and support the welfare process in their states. That includes the crank, Massie. If he’s Musk’s idea of a perfect candidate, he may want to stop smoking the cheeba. He’s exactly what needs to be smoked from the party.

But yes, if we were serious about it, I think we're at the point where we would likely need to increase taxes to try to cover our massive deficits. I don't think any short term growth from cutting additional taxes and/or keeping tax rates the same is going to close that gap.
But we're not serious about it, so we will continue to increase spending and not even try to pretend to make revenue cover the expenditures. And that'll keep working. Until it doesn't.

A lot of assumptions in that, but if it's wrong, why is the one family so upset about him getting life with no parole and no appeal; better than Nicole Brown Simpson's family got...? But if it's true he was headed for the death penalty, what kinda Idaho prosecutor would do this...?

I think the better way to look at this is to see what the headlines would look like if the OBBB were to fail. The press would be spinning this as Trump has no power in his gov't. This take would hurt him in other areas, such as tariff negotiations. If he's not seen as the alpha, then it opens him up to stalled negotiations, which would hurt him going into the midterms. This stall tactic would then be used in every other area. A showing that he can get this legislation done in DC extends his 'aura' (my Zoomer son's term) into every aspect of this presidency.

The point of individual bills used to be that increased political accountability - both at committee-markup, and on the floor, roll call votes on individual issues*.

The Kohberger plea seemed like more-than-side-bar news. Looks like the case was becoming a slam dunk for the death penalty and prosecutors granted a plea deal without consulting victim families. A lot of assumptions in that, but if it's wrong, why is the one family so upset about him getting life with no parole and no appeal; better than Nicole Brown Simpson's family got...? But if it's true he was headed for the death penalty, what kinda Idaho prosecutor would do this...?

It is a requirement that the victims family is notified ahead of time in some states. But I think its more common in blue states, although I don't know that for sure. In some states, there is a job known as some flavor of "victim advocate" -- basically a social worker type who deals with the victim and/or his family and keeps them updated on the case and whatnot.

I am *still* not entirely clear on the substance or procedural details, but Sen. Schmitt is claiming flat out that the "original" ban on Medicaid for illegals* was always in the bill, and the failed amendment didn't affect that.
One interesting point he made, related to my dull dissertation above about CRs and such - he said yesterday's "failed" amendment was a "messaging" vote (we called them "walk the plank" votes) to get Dems to vote against barring Medicaid to violent criminal illegals. So at least there are signs of some political life in the Senate, again. BTW this explains why 4-6 Dems actually voted with GOP on this one - all of them up this cycle of course.
* did not check, friend advises a 1996 law already bars Medicaid to illegals - if so, why TF wasn't a suit filed on Jan. 21, 2025 on this against the blue (and probably some red) states doing this?

One interesting point he made, related to my dull dissertation above about CRs and such - he said yesterday's "failed" amendment was a "messaging" vote (we called them "walk the plank" votes) to get Dems to vote against barring Medicaid to violent criminal illegals. So at least there are signs of some political life in the Senate, again. BTW this explains why 4-6 Dems actually voted with GOP on this one - all of them up this cycle of course.
* did not check, friend advises a 1996 law already bars Medicaid to illegals - if so, why TF wasn't a suit filed on Jan. 21, 2025 on this against the blue (and probably some red) states doing this?

I believe some of the "USAID going away" = its functions, budgets, and direct oversight moving to regional bureaus of State. At least this is what Rubio said out of the gate. Makes sense. The principal named in the lawsuit lived 8 doors down from us until a coupla years ago when he transferred to Bellaire from Waltrip, mostly cuz Waltrip is awful and his oldest was moving into high school; he actually had them in the same Lutheran school as ours for elementary, also why he transferred to the 'better' school zone to avoid the controversy of principal in public school with kids in private; since he left, Waltrip has gone to complete hell. And our neighborhood (and much of Bellaire) is middle-upper gentrified turf. This guy didn't seem so bad, but you can't advance in a public school district and keep your soul. He deserves this for what he's doing. Wouldn't agree to call the kid the name and pronouns the parents demanded!!

But the poster child for state obstructionism, Vance from North Carolina, gets something of a bad rap. Theres a story about him holding uniforms instead of giving them to the Army of Northern VA, but on the other hand the state had paid for those uniforms out of their own state funds. Given the lack of diplomatic skill of Davis, I doubt that the states were entirely in the wrong.
And the supply problems Lee had were mostly because Davis' supporting another incompetent as the commissary. When he was replaced, even with the nation collapsing the supply situation was much improved in 1865

In a lot of tribal law systems in the ME, for example, the family decides on the punishment. That leads to rich criminals being able to bribe poor victims families to decide to not punish them or only minimally punish the. That's not exactly the system of justice we want to emulate.

The most extreme case of this was when Lee's Army, defending Richmond, was running short of shoes, blankets, and ammunition. Georgia had plenty of all 3 in warehouses that it controlled; but the Georgia Governor said he thought that his home guard forces needed them more, so he refused to send any of it. Just saw another film besides Caught Stealing to peak my interest, apparently PTA is directing a dramedy starring DiCaprio, that looks really good.
I've had this idea for a movie that takes place during the COVID era, it's kind of a mashup of It's A Mad Mad Mad World meets convoy meets Smokey and The Bandit, whereby all of these truckers have to race to California to pick up a MacGuffen and get it back to the east coast.
Daniel Day Lewis is in it in a comedic role, his driving partner is a midget, and there's a scene where they get drunk and he has to toss his partner into the truck.
I just want to see DDL tossing a midget.
This is definately a film PTA would direct.

Reading Rubio's statement is interesting, having been very directly involved in some of this in the (now distant?) past. Some of it echoes things from the early 90s, when it was actually shocking how non-stupid much of the activity was (for those expecting it to be thoroughly Peace Corps/NPR/do-gooder crap). Reinforcing my presumption that - along with so much else - the Obama years disfigured and weaponized foreign aid.

It is infuriating. I see bridges rusting through everywhere that could probably have had their lives extended by decades if they were just painted and maintained, but thats not how government operates. They need constant crises so they can get more money.

But yes, it should have been upgraded over the years as part of routine maintenance, but hasn't been and won't until the next catastrophe when we need TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS RIGHT NOW OR WE ALL DIE.

But the bigger part is the politicians want a crisis around every corner. Scared people vote to give politicians more money.
It's why they always threatened to fire "cops and teachers" at the local level if you don't agree to pay more in property taxes. Or why they allow the roads to go to shit. You say "seriously, there is nothing else to cut in the budget other than cops and teachers?" and they will tell you with a straight face that it's either that, or they get rid of road maintenance or plowing. Or, you know, give them more money and nothing will get fixed but at least you'll still have cops, teachers, and road plowing in the winter!

I moved back to Central Calif to take care of Mom, 13 years ago... at the time there was a 'Shovel Ready Project' to expand 99 highway to 3 lanes.... to alleviate traffic. The signs of the Obama funded project to do so went up 13 years ago.
It's still not done... although signs are now down... they DID do 1.5 YEARS of Construction through my little town, and the neighboring bigger town, during which is was the Most DEADLY Highway in the US... people DIED during that construction... and....

Lancet is scared shitless of what is coming down the pike for Big Pharma and their bullshit studies.
Latest one regards a heart medication but a more serious problem is the coming judgment on the Alzheimer plaque group. They have sacrificed billions for drugs that do not work because the theory is worthless and many of those trials are dubious to say the least.
Similar to string theory and the NSF.

I never dwelled on that part of the plot, I guess. Just well made, decent script, and awesome cast. Like the top 10 or so billed are all awesome (Mads Milkelsen, Joel Edgerton before he was known, Ray Winstone, Ray Stevenson, Stellan Skarsgard as the Saxon warlord, Til Schweiger before Inglorious Bastards...). Sure, Keira Knightley's character was a token annoying fiction, but she herself didn't ruin it and it was worth the watch IMHO...

Resting bitch face intimating resentment and dislike of others. Worked when paired off as pseudo antagonists in Breakfast Club or 16 Candles. Not so well as a romantic lead by herself.
Ally Sheedy though made a career out of acting better than Ringwald did by having a sense of fun with her (even appeared as the villain turned good girl in Psych episodes).

Had a new Doc at the Practice I've gone to for years... he bitched at me about not taking Cholesterol Meds, then saw I was unVax'd for Covid... and made a comment about the Patient knowing more than the Doctor...
Uh... dude... I put in the Computer system you are using to pass on the Diagnose and Prescriptions your Big Pharma owners tell you to...
Nurse in the room, whom I've known for years... just looked at me and shook her head...
I went to the front Desk and had it put into my Record that I did not want to see that Doctor again...

They leave construction equipment in the median for years at a time. There was a generator sitting there in the open that I mentally kept track of. Sitting in exactly the same spot for at least 8 years.
On the other hand, Texas doesn't fuck around. They build shit so fast that I suspect they have space alien construction equipment in the inventory. A 10 year project in CA will take about 18 months in Texas.

I guess I understood that this bill needed to be passed. Once it was passed, subsequent bills would go through that would decrease spending. It had something to do with how funds were allocated and how procedurally they would need to be eliminated.

Hopefully someone can get through to Musk that trying to create a new party, will just give Democrats a super majority in both houses.
He should work to primary Republicans that stray from conservative ideals (voting for this bill really isn't ove of them though, since we know the bullshit involved in funding and how only Democrats ever get their way 100%, so this was a stay for conservatives) Musk should also be reminded he got what he wanted from this bill too, where they lessened ther burden on Indians sending money back to Indian, which are Musk's primary workforce.
