Musk says he will support Massie if he's primaried:Tesla CEO and former Trump administration special employee Elon Musk says he'll back Rep. I've been reading Howard Chapelle's very detailed 1949 History of the American Sailing Navy, and it's striking how worthless libertarians have been right from the get-go. Jefferson was against a navy, but then used the one Adams and the Federalists had built in a very incompetent way to fight the Barbary Pirates. But he and Madison (pre-1812, Madison changed his tune later) wouldn't build anymore frigates or sloops. No sir. They built really tiny gunboats as some sort of waterborne equivalent to the state militias they had such a hard-on for.
I'm beginning to suspect that libertarianism going back to the anti-federalists is just an excuse in doing nothing and feeling virtuous about it at best, and a sort of non-Marxist escape from reality at worst. Posted by: the lower depths at July 01, 2025 03:34 PM (+b4rY) 20

And then Obama won, spending continued out of control, covid happened, spending went wild, Biden got elected, spending went even wilder, and the country still isn't bankrupt. And I don't think 2012 really meant that people truly cared about the deficit. It was more of a partisan thing to attack Obama with. "You have to win elections to craft better laws."
Technically. But as most GOP voters have discovered for 30 years, no necessary connection between the two. Plus, "better laws" mean nothing in a bad-faith collapsed civic culture (with a mostly lawless wildly usurping judiciary as a huge weapon). With an electorate that refuses to enforce its will, except episodically (2010, 2016, 2024) See the Soviet constitution for better laws, and what they can amount to. Still the odds favor "winning" elections, vs. not doing so. Posted by: rhomboid at July 01, 2025 03:39 PM (1m82a) 40

Elon is pretty new to politics to be fighting so hard right out of the gate.
I get, for whatever reason, he thinks this is urgent do or die situation but he's putting a lot of political, and financial, capital on the line for something that isn't really worth it. That he's diametrically opposing Trump so publicly because of a large spending bill going through Congress is really quite silly. It's like he's only been watching Congress for a year and suddenly discovered there's a lot of crazy shit and ridiculous spending going on around there. Cool your jets, Elon, a lot of us have been watching Congress screw things up for decades. This is nothing new under the sun. They lie, they spend money, and then they lie about what they spend money on. You're bankroll and loud mouth aren't going to change that. It's the nature of the beast. Trump realizes this, instinctively, so he doesn't want to lose the good trying to chase the perfect. Elon is fixated on it like it's life or death. People want to tread lightly with Musk. F that. He obviously used access for his own purposes and then proceeded to undermine Republicans using that knowledge. He’s a dreamer, not a realist nor acquainted with our government or its history in any way.
Like it or not, it’s about math and what will pass. It’s been that way since the first continental Congress. I suppose if you have a wide majority and at least 60 solid votes in the senate you can do the impossible. But that’s not happening anytime soon. It’s really the ultimate betrayal by a guy who frames himself as an idealist, but is unattached to reality. This bill isn’t perfect. I also believe there are a few seats we should go after from people who bent us over a barrel to spend more than we should and support the welfare process in their states. That includes the crank, Massie. If he’s Musk’s idea of a perfect candidate, he may want to stop smoking the cheeba. He’s exactly what needs to be smoked from the party. Posted by: Maroon at July 01, 2025 03:39 PM (HS92B) I don't know, it seems we've collectively decided to ignore the unsustainable deficits and long term debt. But yes, if we were serious about it, I think we're at the point where we would likely need to increase taxes to try to cover our massive deficits. I don't think any short term growth from cutting additional taxes and/or keeping tax rates the same is going to close that gap. But we're not serious about it, so we will continue to increase spending and not even try to pretend to make revenue cover the expenditures. And that'll keep working. Until it doesn't. 12 Musk is not wrong about the bill: it is objectively bad. Is it the best outcome possible given the makeup of Congress? I don’t know.
Posted by: Open Channel D at July 01, 2025 03:33 PM (gYnrv) I'm not sure about it being objectively bad - simply extending the Trump Tax Cuts makes it worthwhile in my book. I think the better way to look at this is to see what the headlines would look like if the OBBB were to fail. The press would be spinning this as Trump has no power in his gov't. This take would hurt him in other areas, such as tariff negotiations. If he's not seen as the alpha, then it opens him up to stalled negotiations, which would hurt him going into the midterms. This stall tactic would then be used in every other area. A showing that he can get this legislation done in DC extends his 'aura' (my Zoomer son's term) into every aspect of this presidency. When you look at the cui bono aspect of these talks, it's clear that the Dems, MFM, GOPe, EU, etc etc etc are all on the side of this failing. Simply because of that, it needs to pass. I get Elon's antipathy, but a win for Trump here helps him get some real reform done next year. If he loses, it's over. Posted by: Darrell Harris at July 01, 2025 03:46 PM (0CU3H) 84

That he's diametrically opposing Trump so publicly because of a large spending bill going through Congress is really quite silly.
Posted by: SpeakingOf at July 01, 2025 03:40 PM (6ydKt) Elon Musk spent a lot of money on Trumps election, undoubtably with an expectation that Trump would pay him back through govt subsidies and contracts. Trump did not do that. Elon Musk is now mad that he wasted his money. He had a similar falling out with the Democrats a few years back. This was entirely predictable (and, in fact, I did predict it and got attacked for doing so). I don't know why political nerds don't understand that most people are not ideological. CRs (appropriations bills rolled into one, with a long duration vs. a brief place-holding duration) and reconciliation are not really related.
I'd imagine there's a Congressional Research Service document that lays out all the concepts and terminology. Appropriations bills passed individually (there used to be 12, dunno now) can be just as disastrous and irresponsible as when they are rolled into a CR (also called an omnibus). The point of individual bills used to be that increased political accountability - both at committee-markup, and on the floor, roll call votes on individual issues*. Rolling into omnibus/CRs, passing them within 48 hours, etc., of course completely removes all this from the process (though most parts still get committee mark-up). * "GOP controlled" House Approps last week marked up an immigration-related bill, adopting - by voice vote - many provisions, some only advisory, that could have been in press releases from Mayorkas' DHS, or Catholic Charities, or La Raza. The high water mark of people actually caring about the budget was probably 2012.
And then Obama won, spending continued out of control, covid happened, spending went wild, Biden got elected, spending went even wilder, and the country still isn't bankrupt. --- Some of you near 29 may recall the annual feature of the budget negotiations of the 80's and 90's (the last time we did budgets--and even a "balanced" budget) was the circus of the Blue Dog Democrat coalition that was totes gonna chart a middle path between the wild and crazy tax-n-spend liberals and the draconian spending cuts and tax give-aways of the Republicans. It was a pile of horseshit that always only ever resulted in increased spending and more taxes. But gol-durned them Blue Dogs were a'fightin' for Americans. Moral of the story: Americans have never, in your lifetime, ever really gave a fuck about spending--they just want everyone to pretend like it is a problem, not DO anything about it. The Kohberger plea seemed like more-than-side-bar news. Looks like the case was becoming a slam dunk for the death penalty and prosecutors granted a plea deal without consulting victim families. A lot of assumptions in that, but if it's wrong, why is the one family so upset about him getting life with no parole and no appeal; better than Nicole Brown Simpson's family got...? But if it's true he was headed for the death penalty, what kinda Idaho prosecutor would do this...?
Posted by: bearski at July 01, 2025 03:45 PM (Bhsk7) I don't know much about the case, but I'd say most prosecutors would rather take a plea than go to trial. Prosecutors live and die by their conviction rates, and you never know which way a jury is going to go. As far as the family's input? I hate to be blunt about it, but they're not really part of the process here. In our legal system, the aggrieved party is the state, not the family. The Big Beautiful Bill kicks 1.4 MILLION illegal immigrants off Medicaid. For too long, Americans have been paying for the welfare of people who shouldn't even be in our country. doing my part to add news to slow news day -
HOUSTON (Alliance Defending Freedom) — Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys filed a federal lawsuit Monday on behalf of a Texas family after a Houston school district repeatedly flouted their requests to stop treating their daughter as a boy—a so-called “social transition.” In March 2025, ADF attorneys sent a letter to the district on behalf of the Osborn family asking it to confirm that the couple’s daughter would only be referred to by her given name and correct pronouns, and ADF asked the district to provide documents related to the events that occurred. The school district did not provide any documents and ignored the Osborns request that they stop treating their daughter as a boy. The Osborns had no choice but to file a lawsuit against the district to stop them from continuing this action. Posted by: Chuck Martel at July 01, 2025 03:59 PM (Dv3i1) 166

Posted by: bearski at July 01, 2025 03:56 PM (Bhsk7) It is a requirement that the victims family is notified ahead of time in some states. But I think its more common in blue states, although I don't know that for sure. In some states, there is a job known as some flavor of "victim advocate" -- basically a social worker type who deals with the victim and/or his family and keeps them updated on the case and whatnot. That may not be the case in Idaho, I have no idea. I'm not against there being a victim advocate by the way. I think it is important for victims and their families to feel like they are part of the process, even if, legally speaking, they are not. And for good reason! In a lot of tribal law systems in the ME, for example, the family decides on the punishment. That leads to rich criminals being able to bribe poor victims families to decide to not punish them or only minimally punish the. That's not exactly the system of justice we want to emulate. Musk largely functions on pathos. You can’t act that way in Washington. You have to understand what the rules are and how to win the game. ShainS, thanks for that.
I am *still* not entirely clear on the substance or procedural details, but Sen. Schmitt is claiming flat out that the "original" ban on Medicaid for illegals* was always in the bill, and the failed amendment didn't affect that. One interesting point he made, related to my dull dissertation above about CRs and such - he said yesterday's "failed" amendment was a "messaging" vote (we called them "walk the plank" votes) to get Dems to vote against barring Medicaid to violent criminal illegals. So at least there are signs of some political life in the Senate, again. BTW this explains why 4-6 Dems actually voted with GOP on this one - all of them up this cycle of course. * did not check, friend advises a 1996 law already bars Medicaid to illegals - if so, why TF wasn't a suit filed on Jan. 21, 2025 on this against the blue (and probably some red) states doing this? I believe some of the "USAID going away" = its functions, budgets, and direct oversight moving to regional bureaus of State. At least this is what Rubio said out of the gate. Makes sense. The outlandish nonsense that almost certainly started in the Obama years (WRT much of the programming) was no part of the picture before that, and much of the activity - especially emergency humanitarian relief - is long-standing and pretty non-controversial.

HOUSTON (Alliance Defending Freedom) — Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys filed a federal lawsuit Monday on behalf of a Texas family after a Houston school district repeatedly flouted their requests to stop treating their daughter as a boy—a so-called “social transition.” Posted by: Chuck Martel ------------ !!!! My wife just sent me the Texas Scorecard link to this story. The principal named in the lawsuit lived 8 doors down from us until a coupla years ago when he transferred to Bellaire from Waltrip, mostly cuz Waltrip is awful and his oldest was moving into high school; he actually had them in the same Lutheran school as ours for elementary, also why he transferred to the 'better' school zone to avoid the controversy of principal in public school with kids in private; since he left, Waltrip has gone to complete hell. And our neighborhood (and much of Bellaire) is middle-upper gentrified turf. This guy didn't seem so bad, but you can't advance in a public school district and keep your soul. He deserves this for what he's doing. Wouldn't agree to call the kid the name and pronouns the parents demanded!! Posted by: bearski at July 01, 2025 04:09 PM (Bhsk7) 229

Theres a story about him holding uniforms instead of giving them to the Army of Northern VA, but on the other hand the state had paid for those uniforms out of their own state funds. Given the lack of diplomatic skill of Davis, I doubt that the states were entirely in the wrong. 178 I think it is important for victims and their families to feel like they are part of the process, even if, legally speaking, they are not. And for good reason! In a lot of tribal law systems in the ME, for example, the family decides on the punishment. That leads to rich criminals being able to bribe poor victims families to decide to not punish them or only minimally punish the. That's not exactly the system of justice we want to emulate.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes ------------------- Interesting info, thx. Def not advocating for victim family's to be the decision makers, just to be consulted. So you have make another Transformers or Superhero movie and people in China can "enjoy" them as well as an American can, but a My Cousin Vinny is going to lose much of the humor in translation and because the people there won't get the stereotypes being made fun of.. If you think Law and Order, in any of its many permutations has anything pertinent to say about real law and order, you are vastly mistaken! I refused to watch it because, from the very first episode, the prosecution, that is to say, the State, gets to go last! That’s totally against our system of laws! And no one even comments on it!

Hollywood moved away from comedies because they don't translate overseas as well.
They can, but they have to be something that broadly translates well like silent comedy, or connects with something generally understood, like Blazing Saddles. Any comedy that relies heavily on language or specific cultural beats is not going to work well in other nations and cultures or especially languages. Harold Lloyd is funny in China and Africa and Canada and Chile. Air plane requires too much understanding of disaster movies, American culture, and puns. WTF? Wrong. OFDA is the implementing agency, under USAID. I don't how the organization chart looks now, but I'd bet $9 OFDA or its equivalent remains (largely unchanged), under some State bureau.
USAID didn't just house OFDA, but its various bureaus coordinated with OFDA whenever it made sense (follow-on aid following major disasters, for example). Posted by: rhomboid at July 01, 2025 04:20 PM (1m82a) USAID was, and has been from its inception, a slush fund used by the CIA and State Department to throw money around overseas as part of projecting "soft power" after Kennedy lost his shit on the CIA for their bumbling projections of, er, "hard power" like the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Did some of that money ever go to a "good cause"? Yeah, probably. Do we know that for sure? No, because they didn't / don't keep accurate records of anything, like most of the federal government. Do we want our intel agencies running a shadow government / shadow foreign policy operations around the world with no oversight? I would say no, but apparently I'm in the minority on this site with that view. Is USAID the only such area of the budget where these slush funds exist? Absolutely not. Just saw another film besides Caught Stealing to peak my interest, apparently PTA is directing a dramedy starring DiCaprio, that looks really good.
I've had this idea for a movie that takes place during the COVID era, it's kind of a mashup of It's A Mad Mad Mad World meets convoy meets Smokey and The Bandit, whereby all of these truckers have to race to California to pick up a MacGuffen and get it back to the east coast. Daniel Day Lewis is in it in a comedic role, his driving partner is a midget, and there's a scene where they get drunk and he has to toss his partner into the truck. I just want to see DDL tossing a midget. This is definately a film PTA would direct. Posted by: Thomas Bender at July 01, 2025 04:29 PM (XV/Pl) 335
Reading Rubio's statement is interesting, having been very directly involved in some of this in the (now distant?) past. The one movie where I thought Mollie Ringwald was hot, she played a psycho.
That was the only one she took her top off in, and showed that she has really big ones. Apparently she always had, they just put her into loose clothes and strapped them down pretty well to make her look younger. I have heard mixed things about her personally, apparently absolutely no one who worked with her likes her. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 01, 2025 04:33 PM (dfIr7) 357

Why fix that road in a week when you can do it in four? Why paint that bridge when you can hire your brother in law's company to replace it when it collapses?
Posted by: 18-1 at July 01, 2025 04:31 PM (t0Rmr) Sure, that's part of it. But the bigger part is the politicians want a crisis around every corner. Scared people vote to give politicians more money. It's why they always threatened to fire "cops and teachers" at the local level if you don't agree to pay more in property taxes. Or why they allow the roads to go to shit. You say "seriously, there is nothing else to cut in the budget other than cops and teachers?" and they will tell you with a straight face that it's either that, or they get rid of road maintenance or plowing. Or, you know, give them more money and nothing will get fixed but at least you'll still have cops, teachers, and road plowing in the winter! Pretty sure that Obama’s TARP infrastructure bill spent the most money on …. Public schools. Not bridges and roads, not the electricity grid, etc.

Oh, and how many millions of Americans have died because that money was spent there instead of here? Posted by: 18-1 at July 01, 2025 04:31 PM (t0Rmr) I moved back to Central Calif to take care of Mom, 13 years ago... at the time there was a 'Shovel Ready Project' to expand 99 highway to 3 lanes.... to alleviate traffic. The signs of the Obama funded project to do so went up 13 years ago. It's still not done... although signs are now down... they DID do 1.5 YEARS of Construction through my little town, and the neighboring bigger town, during which is was the Most DEADLY Highway in the US... people DIED during that construction... and.... They didn't widen the bridges and overpasses, so it is still only 2 lanes per side wide. Note, this is in one of the Republican sections of California... so we will be the last to get any money from the State. Posted by: Romeo13 at July 01, 2025 04:39 PM (mP0Kj) 369

Like the top 10 or so billed are all awesome (Mads Milkelsen, Joel Edgerton before he was known, Ray Winstone, Ray Stevenson, Stellan Skarsgard as the Saxon warlord, Til Schweiger before Inglorious Bastards...). They leave construction equipment in the median for years at a time. There was a generator sitting there in the open that I mentally kept track of. Sitting in exactly the same spot for at least 8 years. On the other hand, Texas doesn't fuck around. I guess I understood that this bill needed to be passed. Once it was passed, subsequent bills would go through that would decrease spending. It had something to do with how funds were allocated and how procedurally they would need to be eliminated.
The danger was always in the follow up bills not getting through. Is this not the case? Because if this is the case, and Musk must know this if it is, why the public bitching? Posted by: Black JEM at July 01, 2025 04:52 PM (GZYu7) 386

Hopefully someone can get through to Musk that trying to create a new party, will just give Democrats a super majority in both houses.
He should work to primary Republicans that stray from conservative ideals (voting for this bill really isn't ove of them though, since we know the bullshit involved in funding and how only Democrats ever get their way 100%, so this was a stay for conservatives) Musk should also be reminded he got what he wanted from this bill too, where they lessened ther burden on Indians sending money back to Indian, which are Musk's primary workforce.
