Off topic post (for an ONT).
I missed the Gardening Thread this morning, and was wondering if any of the "green thumb" Morons could help me? I failed to sufficiently water some newly purchased plants and they are now stressed. (Just two tomato plants and a plum tree.) I always observe a little stress when I actually plant new plants in the ground. Is it better to try and nurse stressed plants back to health in their pots, or is it better to plant them ASAP and see if I can get them to recover in the ground? Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has officially launched a new political party, announcing the formation of the America Party in a July 5 post on his social media platform X. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk wrote, following a poll he posted a day earlier asking his followers whether they would support such an initiative. Musk’s poll found that 65.4 percent of respondents favored establishing the America Party. The announcement of the new party was made following Musk’s fierce criticism of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a sweeping measure signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4. Good Evening to the ONT Horde and our host triumvirate!
Got the grass deflectors on the underside of the mower deck on the Dixon welded up, and went mowing. Machine ran fine, and does cut better with my home-made blades in it. Amazon has proper blades for it, though, so I will order a set, or maybe two sets. They sure do wear out. Done with mowing for a while, I took the carburetor out of the Studebaker Zip Van that flooded out and stalled in my lower yard while I was demo-ing it for a friend. Took the carb apart, fussed with the float, and put it back together, and reinstalled it. It started right up, and ran fine, and I drove it back up close to the shop. Going to sand and prime the body around the holes where the tail lamps and turn signal units go, and then put the lamp bodies back in place. I disturbed a yellowjacket nest a few years ago. I was running like an NFL player across the backyard, almost getting away, when I tripped and hit the ground, hard.
I lay there for a little while, contemplating the Universe, and remembered it had been years since I had last been stung. I wondered if I had become allergic in that time. I eventually got up and got into the house, bringing a few of the bastards with me. Fortunately, I did not swell up and die. A few days later I was driving 60 mph with the windows down, when something unknown hit me in the face and stung me. This time I got to wonder it the dozen previous stings had sensitized me. once again, I did not swell up and die. I am indeed a fortunate son. I had lunch today with Salty and was explaining how much I've learned about this town from FB. I learned that the stray cat I'm feeding is also eating at a house the next block over. More troubling is that there is a woman in town that traps cats, then drives them out to a smaller town 10-15 miles away and dumps them. This include pets that are properly licensed and neutered. So far, the city has done nothing, although they do have an ad out for a new Code Enforcement/Animal Control officer. Watched an amazing interview with an British SAS dude who worked with our Delta force. This dude had more pride in OUR American flag than all the dems and the left put together. I have no words. You have to hear it for yourself. Its long, but you only need to listen to the first 5 minutes to get the full depth of this dude's attitude, but 3:00 to around 5:15 is the real meat. I remember that election and the mainstream (only) media saying Perot (Big Ears my dad called him) was 'drawing equally' from both sides. Of course that wasn't the case. Everyone I knew who said they were going for Perot had voted for Bush in '88. Of course, after the election the media concluded that Perot drew from Republicans 2 or more to 1 vs. Democrats. One difference - Elon wasn't born here so he can't run for President. Still, I don't think it will take much for Elon for queer it for the Republicans. I caught some FNM "news" coverage of the BBB today. You'll be shocked to know we have a deficit. And an incredibly large national debt and the Republicans are bad, bad men for increasing both.
The talking point from the last few years that the deficit and debt don't matter and anyone that cares about them is a science hating NAZI has apparently disappeared. Oh and also the budget is EVVVVIIIILLLLL because it cut aid to "those in need". So, spends too much and not enough if you are catching that... Posted by: 18-1 at July 05, 2025 11:35 PM (t0Rmr) 242

7Up used to to be bright, light and highly carbonated. Now, it's like drinking syrup.
—— American food is doused in sugar. ——— Well not exactly, it’s doused in Corn Syrup. It’s chemically similar, though not to the human body. The fructose can only be metabolized in the liver, period. Obesity almost always is strongly correlated with non-alcoholic fatty liver, or impaired liver function. Plus, it leaves a slimy, sour after taste. It doesn’t seem to satisfy the way a soda made with sugar. It seems to interfere with the carbonation as well, probably because they have to use a lot of it.. A soda made with sugar has a clean crisp carbonation that is noticeable right away. Posted by: Common Tater at July 05, 2025 11:44 PM (eFKVH) 256

Posted by: Common Tater ------------- It was business. Escapes the mind at the moment. Bush did something by going back on his word that harmed his business. Caused him enough difficulty that he decided Bush would not be president. Looking back at the election period Perot ran hard and was up in the polls and then he pulled back, almost disappeared from the contest until Bush started polling better then Perot campaigned again but just enough to pull votes from Bush but not enough to win. If I had a couple billion $, I would start a car company that would build old cars, on frames (not unibodies), and then modernize them (to the customer's liking). So, some of those 1930s retro-future cars, old Studebakers, Triumph-style roadsters, etc. You could choose between normally aspirated engines and full EFI, fancy electronics or just knobs, and so on. Engine configuration might not be the same as the originals, but would be intended to allow for easy work on anything in there. Sorry I am late with an update on Ciampino. My sister was visiting him.
She found out why he's still sounding dehydrated. Apparently they do not have him on IV fluids even though he's dehydrated. Supposedly they don't want him on fluids because of his legs retaining fluid. They don't want fluids to end up around his lungs. The strange thing is that they didn't have this concern the last two hospital stays. We don't understand why it is all of a sudden a concern. His kidney cyst is causing discomfort and pain. We don't know when the surgery will be. The doctor wants to do three days of iron and then go from there. Dad has been given a list of nursing homes with rehab facilities to choose from. One of them I know from personal experience, but the others I know nothing about. Some locals have recommended one place, but others have said it is no longer a good place. I think the warning came after the 10 o'clock news. They need horns. Here in Littleton they have horns that sound like old air raid sirens and if it's not 9 AM (test time) you better check and find out what's up.
Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at July 06, 2025 12:19 AM (xCsAY) I believe the flash flood warning was issued at 5:54 am. I’ve seen posts on X tonight saying that, with the rapidly increasing population along the Guadalupe River, Texas should have been building a series of sirens and other warning systems downstream, but that hasn’t ever been done. Got a call after a recent blood test. Said results were okay, but I'm a little bit dehydrated. I said I'm on a water pill and was told not to drink as much water as recommended. He said, oh yeah, fluid build-up. I said, yes, I'll have to talk to the doctor about this.
So they tell me not to drink as much fluids, and I'm on a script that makes me pee often, sometimes every 20 minutes. (I've learned not to take it if I have to go out.) So now I'm slightly dehydrated. Please, guys, make up your mind. Posted by: RickZ at July 06, 2025 12:36 AM (gKDq2) 323

I think that one of the planks in Musk's platform is calling a Constitutional Convention, so that could change if he succeeds.
Everything, and I mean everything (except two, or at least an equal number, of Senators per state) is up for grabs if a Convention is seated. I am more afraid of what happens to MAGA when we lose Trump one way or another.. for whatever reason, he connects with the normies and is the ultimate influence decider. Musk will learn that he doesn't have that sort of pull if he keeps openly fighting Trump. If money alone wins the oligarchs would have already crushed MAGA. Biggest problem as always is human nature. How do you find enough people to go into government without the main goals of getting rich and getting control for the sake of control? There has been a good start of purging but it seems that only Trump Actual has the power of approval that strikes fear into the DC corruptos of both nominal parties.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at July 06, 2025 12:25 AM (qpyNK) I'd be willing to give the states a minimum of 2 representatives in the house instead of the current 1, but still keep the current number of representatives overall. That would throw incrementally more power to the smaller (less populated) states. Of course that includes Delaware, Rhode Island and Hawaii.... Any changes a constitutional convention makes would still have to be approved by 2/3rds of the states - a pretty high bar for shenanigans. The nice thing about molten lead is that it solidifies and can be picked up for reuse. Boiling oil is effective, but expensive, and basically a one-time-use option. Same with boiling piss, with the added burden of having to either collect it in a hurry or have vats of piss staged and ready to go all the time. Over time, lead is the most economical choice for the frugal castle owner. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at July 06, 2025 12:59 AM (qpyNK) 349

That has happened more than a few times in the past.Thing is this time it happened on a long holiday weekend in the summer when lots of people were out. Re Article V Convention and fears it could run amok. It very well could, but it takes 3/4 of the states to ratify any such output of a convention. Fun fact: the closest we ever came to a ConCon was just one state shy of the 2/3 required to convene one after the SCROTUS infamous "one man, one vote" ruling, which was idiotic. This ruled unconstitutional things like states used to do. Here in SC, each county got one senator, and the county elected said senator. The House was proportional to population in districts, a mirror of the federal system. That ruling said no, can't do that, one man, one vote, so the Senate must be by population as well. Posted by: JQ at July 06, 2025 02:21 AM (rdVOm) Concrete is pretty damned expensive, too, you know. One thing about wood, you can salvage old wood from demolished buildings, and repurpose it. I still have some lumber salvaged from the wreck of a grain elevator they knocked down here close to 20 years ago. Rough 2X8 planks, very good grade of spruce, too. Maybe you could build a deck from old railway ties. Railroads replace ties all the time. Now I think contractors buy them up to sell at garden stores, etc., but I'd bet you could mooch a couple of pickup loads if you sweet-talked the rail crew doing the tie replacement. There are two methods of ratifying amendments, by 3/4 of the state legislatures, or 3/4 of state ratifying conventions. The latter method has been used just once. Guess which amendment that was? Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at July 06, 2025 02:27 AM (w6EFb) 398

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ----- Don't have the connections for that, LOL. Plus, do I want to be tracking creosote into the house? Ties are messy. Posted by: JQ at July 06, 2025 02:31 AM (rdVOm) 399
Well, getting late here. I have to hit the sack. Night, Horde. My heartbeat aggravation has been pretty slight for the last few days. Going in for the cardiac perfusion scan in a week and a half. Looks like I will be able to hold out that long, no problem.

Sweet Jesus, hold everyone in Texas in the palm of your hand. Bring all those missing girls to the wonder of your choice for them. Bring all their parents the consolation of your Sacred Heart. Bring all of your good from every evil you allow. Bless every first responder, and bless all families and those who grieve. Your will be done, and let us all agree that Your Will is the answer to all of our questions.
Amen. Posted by: tcn in AK at July 06, 2025 03:21 AM (1Gsou) 407
We are quite concerned with what the doctor is doing to my Dad. We took him to the hospital because he was severely dehydrated. They put him on a lasix pill, but give him no IV fluids. So they make him urinate more of what little fluid he has left. He can't drink enough to keep up and is still mumbling his speech. I'm no expert, but this just sounds like doing more damage to the patient than helping.
We're wondering if we need to transfer him to another hospital. Posted by: Joyenz at July 06, 2025 03:49 AM (sPQoU) 408
I have to redo my deck. Its 40 years old. Its one of the last big projects left. No clue how I'll do it yet. I'm sure it won't be frigging normal. lol
Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division -------- Yep. 40 years here as well.. got some hunks of plywood and T-111 covering the worst places. It's getting hazardous out there. Posted by: JQ at July 06, 2025 02:01 --------- Ours is only 37 yrs but it is failing. We are having t stained this summer by a bunch of college kids. Anyone heard of this group? They supposedly train with Sherwin-Williams. Posted by: Farmer, with his own historical take at July 06, 2025 03:51 AM (55Qr6) 409

Posted by: Joyenz at July 06, 2025 03:49 AM (sPQoU) No, you need to raise hell with the "hospitalist." There is a person there who decides what treatment is given to which patient. Read that person the riot act, and don't take no for an answer. They will try to put you off. Remain calm but don't be put off. Hospitals are combat zones, particularly where the elderly are concerned. They will tell you that treatment is some sort of cruelty and you should just let your elderly relative pass away. That is blatant crap. If your person is dehydrated, then get an IV going right damned now. Fluids never hurt anyone, no matter the situation. If he has fluids around his heart, then they need to treat that, but his brain can't go without water, period. Be firm, but calm. If they refuse, then ask for a review at the corporate level. If that doesn't scare them, get a lawyer involved. Posted by: tcn in AK at July 06, 2025 03:57 AM (1Gsou) 410
Joyenz, what a tough situation!
Dehydration can cause delirium, I think, but what's the alternative? Fluid on the lungs? Hmm... I'm inclined to believe the Dr. is choosing the lesser of evils here. *I am not a Dr., nor do I play one on TV* I'm so sorry. Prayers continuing! Posted by: JQ at July 06, 2025 03:59 AM (rdVOm) 411
Tcn has raised an important point.
I will withdraw my previous comment, Joyenz. Again, praying for all of you... Posted by: JQ at July 06, 2025 04:01 AM (rdVOm) 412

Posted by: Joyenz at July 06, 2025 03:49 Best of luck to you J. I just went thru my Dad being hospitalized since Sept, he just passed May 29. He went in because he fell. He could walk then, but unsteady. Next we know he can't walk and has a stage 4 bedsore that will never heal. This is great medical care? Posted by: Farmer, with his own historical take at July 06, 2025 04:02 AM (55Qr6) 413
Farmer, if your deck is "failing" why are you bothering to get it re-stained?
(My deck is sh0t. No doubt about it. No amount of stain or paint or other slop will rejuvenate it at this point.) Posted by: JQ at July 06, 2025 04:03 AM (rdVOm) 414

They're saying the lasix is because of the fluid retention in his legs (he's had bypass) and they don't want to give him IV fluids because they don't want fluid buildup around his lungs. Thing is, when he was hospitalized in March and I think it was May, they gave him fluids and his legs have been this way for a few years. This is why we don't understand what the heck they're doing this time and they want to do a procedure on him in a couple of days. I don't think he'll make it in his current condition, even though it isn't full anesthesia and more like twilight. Posted by: Joyenz at July 06, 2025 04:06 AM (sPQoU) 415
Thanks JQ and sorry for your loss Farmer.
This is the hospital that killed our mother in 2021. They gave her blood thinner for two blood clots, but failed to catch her bleeding out into her abdomen because of the thinner. Posted by: Joyenz at July 06, 2025 04:10 AM (sPQoU) 416

Thanks Joyenz. I was up with Dad until Jules got sick. You really have to keep an eye on these guys treating the elderly.
Some may remember I was in WI with Dad till Jules almost died of septic shock. Never saw him after, couldn't leave her. There is no reason he should have gotten that bedsore with proper medical care. When I was there I had to complain for 13 days before he got an air mattress that the doc had ordered. Posted by: Farmer, with his own historical take at July 06, 2025 04:30 AM (55Qr6) 418

Joyenz, his kidneys may not be able to process the extra fluids and the resultant edema is worse than the dehydration at this point.
