Before getting on the plane, Chiara says she was quite nervous about whether the trip would be unsafe after reading about Iran in online news reports. But, she was incredibly surprised when she arrived to find the country a welcoming and friendly destination. “I was very nervous to go and a lot of my friends were warning me that it was really dangerous,” she told SWNS news agency. “Every time I saw something about Iran in the news it was just some blurry pictures that looked like North Korea. “When I got there, I was so surprised.” “Everything was so different from what I expected. The people were so friendly. The men were helping me with my bags and making sure I was okay. *** “It is known as an Islamic country, but it doesn’t really feel like it, it was very westernized. “As a woman you have an instinct when something isn’t right, and there wasn’t a single moment where I felt like that.” Chiara says her favorite parts of the trip were the “kind people” and the food, with her favorite sight being the Blue Mosque.Read the whole thing and decide for yourself. A Texas man recently made the shocking discovery that he had somehow become married to the woman he had just broken up with, without his consent.Check out the story at the link. About the Iran trip- depends on where she went. In the more conservative areas, it would not have been awesome. But in the more metropolitan areas, women are actually defying the Hijab law and dressing really nicely. They carry scarves in case someone is a jerk, but it gives some hope. Now women still don’t have the same rights, but it isn’t Afghanistan in some areas. I hope there is regime change. The Persians may take their country back. At least I hope they do.

I was shocked to hear today that Chris the Zman, of TheZman.com blog, died unexpectedly last Thursday at the age of 59. He had produced a column every Monday through Thursday, with an hour-long podcast on Friday, for years.
He was an articulate spokesman for the Dissident Right, and an early critic of ConInc. He had some strong opinions, but he wasn't for sale. He reportedly died of natural causes. As far as I know he did not have any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of Hillary Clinton. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 30, 2025 10:28 PM (r6SF4) 71

So as usual a dumb AWFL goes and travels the dirt region, and claims it's great and amazing, yet if you look at where she was and the timeframe, she didn't go anywhere near where you would expect to be bad (not to mention, of the awful middle eastern countries, Iran seems like it's on the less awful side, to travelers and the like, while most of their horrific actions are the government's actions against the people and USA/ Israel) So basically her trip consisted of the far north western party, which is traditionally where the minority religious folks are pushed, I.E. not Muslim fanatics. Her interactions were most likely more with people closer related to Turks and Armenians.
She should try the same trip to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia or Gaza, and then we can really hear about how it is to travel in these areas, probably from get mourning relatives. Posted by: Rbastid at June 30, 2025 11:52 PM (unw/D) 271

Posted by: Tom Servo at June 30, 2025 11:48 PM (Lhvai) Manufacturers get to write down physical plant and machinery, too. It's a legit business expense, and the "depletion allowance" is no different. Posted by: polynikes What are these fossil fuel tax breaks? Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. === Actually a very good question. I am not aware of any tax breaks on buying an IGE vehicle. Or piping you home with natural gas of relying on the power company vs. solar cells and power walls. Gasoline tax at state and federal level to pay for roads vs. none for all electric cars. Paying for oil license on public land which takes small footprint vs. subsidized wind and solar farms which hog land, not that either have jack to do with Musk... No clue what Musk is bitching about. The sidebar re the Idaho killer. The painful statement by the sister of one victim reminded me of why during law school I chose against criminal law despite planning a career in prosecution. During a year long internship w the public defender office of capital crimes in a large CA city I saw first hand how that area of US law is a disgustingly mismanaged and politicized system. Deputy DAs and PDs time and again run thru stacks of pending capital cases treating them like dollar garage sale items, settling, pleading out, tossing, just ridding their desks of files with absolutely no consideration of the living victims. I was haunted by the cases, the autopsy photos popping up in nightmares, knowing it all meant so little with both sides just trying to get back to their personal lives as quickly and easily as possible and where DAs actually tried, cases disappear into the ether on stupid appeals. Sorry for the downer rant, that Idaho case dug it up. Back to lurking.

When Biden gave the Taliban $80B in weapons the FNM told me it was a lie. Why a lie? Well after a generous calculation based on deprecation it was only worth $24B. Tillamook white Cheddar (all Cheddar is white, they add coloring to make it orange, for some reason) should be illegal. It’s that good. It lasts about as Chocolate does around here, not long.
Most store brands of “Sharp” Cheddar taste like a mild Colby. I don’t know if there are any regs on aging, but that’s what makes it sharp. Once in a great while they will slip up and get the real deal. Gets slightly crumbly. For some reason ya hafta buy “extra sharp” cheddar to get a passable whang to to it, and it is only supplied in those twee faggoty 8 oz packages, no 2 pound blocks, no sir. The white Tillamook is consistently good, the orange stuff less so. Still excellent. Posted by: February 26 at July 01, 2025 12:34 AM (dgu/T) 340

Highest one hour rainfall was 3.7" on June 16, 1969. Because of the calendar date (midnight to midnight) vs any 24 hour period, the highest daily rainfall was 9.32" on Aug 26, 1995. GSP recalculated the 30 year normals last year to 1990 - 2020, as opposed to 1980 - 2010. so that switched around the wettest and driest normal months a good bit. They do that every 10 years or so. For some things 20 year normal ranges are used, but 30 year is the main one. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at July 01, 2025 12:44 AM (w6EFb) 354

It wasn't a guided tour, per se in Iraq. There was a young woman I found by word of mouth, with a small business arranging travel in Iraq, who arranged our visas, hotels, a rough itinerary, etc. She met us at the airport, got us to our hotel, took us around Baghdad for the first day. She arranged for a driver for the rest of the trip, and gave us recommendations as far as sites, etc. and her phone number. She checked in regularly, multiple times a day, and of course our driver wouldn't have let us go anywhere unsafe, but it wasn't like a Rick Steven's type tour in a bus with a group of people. It was an absolutely unforgettable experience. And we didn't pay for a meal the entire time we were there. Even the tiniest little street vendors refused to take our money, and random, very kind strangers bought our meals in restaurants. I'd go back again in a heartbeat. We had private guides in Oman. Armed, although I never felt unsafe at all. I had connections through a perfumer I know, and I think he was worried something might go wrong, although it wasn't at all scary. Oman felt like another world and time. Magical. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at July 01, 2025 01:13 AM (Vvh2V) 371

These people think shit will go back to normal after all the shit they've pulled. They are delusional. It may not go down as anyone expects with tech singularity, demographic collapse, future muslim Europe, and fiscal reckoning all jousting vs each other - but whatever enfuckening is coming is a done deal at least as far as it starting. They are as disconnected from the downstream future as a random sampling of upper crust normies in 1910 or so, and in a few decades their fiefs and households will be dust, mostly. Those two destroy the archaeology guild's story with which we have all been indoctrinated and are hated for doing so. After all, gotta believe those eggspurts, not those rank amateurs like Carlson and Hancock. Listening to both, I do believe our civilization is older than we've been led to believe. I also believe some event, man-made/natural/from space took out that world, leaving behind some amazing megaliths, megaliths which have been built upon over generations. Deliberately buried. Why? When? The Guild has nothing to say. Hancock also thinks that maybe some of these megalith walls with the precise joints were put together through technology lost. He thinks it might have been harmonics, chanting. Seems peoples have been chanting for forever so maybe. That somehow sound temporarily liquified the stone/rock making it malleable. As good a theory as any. Anyone studying ancient history knows a lot of human knowledge went up in flames with the Library at Alexandria. If you like Hancock, Netflix has 2 seasons of a show he did called Ancient Apocalypse that lays out his thinking. I'm pretty sure Carlson makes an appearance (that's my recollection anyway).
I really enjoy this kind of thing. But I categorize it in the same genre as In Search Of (a childhood favorite of mine) and Missing 411 (a more recent guilty pleasure). Where troublemakers like Hancock excel is at poking holes in the consensus timeline. I think he's valuable there. I think his own substitute timeline is too speculative and fanciful. But it's fun. Skip,
I was trying to think what is 2 1/2 hours from SE PA. Quite a bit actually. NJ, DE, MD, unless you work west or north, you're in another state. Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at July 01, 2025 04:01 AM (sAmhv) 419

405 When you look at Gobleki Tepe and other Turkish tepes, there is just no way humans from that long ago could possibly make the structures they made at those sites with the tools then known to be at hand. yet here they are. Deliberately buried. Why? When? The Guild has nothing to say.

It takes me a hour and half to get there with afternoon traffic, get home in 1 hour, mostly only hitting red lights occasionally with no one else at intersection

I was trying to think what is 2 1/2 hours from SE PA. I think Skip is talking time spent on the round trip, so he's facing a 1-1/4 hours travel time radius. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) Imprison! Imprison! Imprison! at July 01, 2025 04:07 AM (xG4kz) 424

About fifteen years ago or thereabouts, there were times when I'd return from our place in Sussex County in the wee hours of the night. It was a two hour drive, and mostly on the major N-S artery, Delaware Route 1. Strangely enough, there would be convoys of 18-wheelers out at that time, headed north, too. Many were labelled as carrying chicken to market from the poultry processors down there. It struck me as odd to witness the chicken haulers travelling in packs. Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 67 degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor. Thunderstorms on the way, as well as the city fireworks, so my poor pups are going to be hiding under the bathtub all day and night. Temperatures today are supposed to be up near 90, so obviously the A/C in the bedroom is going to be pumping away once I clock out.
A couple of hours' work on the board right now. I have no idea what this week is going to be like - are people away for vacation and will visit their doctors next week, or are they deciding to get all their visits over with this week? I really am hoping for a couple of easy days, but am prepared for the worst. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing (aka Eloquent Depression) at July 01, 2025 04:18 AM (Dg2sF) 431

I was shocked to hear today that Chris the Zman, of TheZman.com blog, died unexpectedly last Thursday at the age of 59. He had produced a column every Monday through Thursday, with an hour-long podcast on Friday, for years.
That was a really interesting blog. A lot of his commenters were pretty Stormfront-adjacent, though. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing (aka Eloquent Depression) at July 01, 2025 04:24 AM (Dg2sF) 433

When did the maple leaf become the flag? If I were to guess (and no didn’t google it)…. 1967 for the 100th anniversary? Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at June 30, 2025 10:43 PM (nwGCR) Earlier, I think. 1960-'62 or thereabouts. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon That happened in 1965. I remember (in one of my past lives), the Dominion of Canada flag being the official flag for Canada, as well as singing "The Maple Leaf Forever" in music class (chorus) in the mid-1960s (now there's a song whose original lyrics would have all of Toronto ablaze by dawn if it were broadcast to the populace).
