Gun Thread: End O' June Edition!

June 29 2025 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the End O' June Edition? Have you been enjoying the heatwave on the east coast this week? What are you doing to stay cool? Has it affected your ability to go to the range and shoot?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Persian Mauser

Now this is cool beans! Our pal The Walking Dude shares his Persian Mauser!

With Iran in the news Here are some pix of my 8mm 98/29 Persian (Iranian) Mauser in the white (or unblued) and ammo I got from Samco decades ago. The bore is pristine and the rifle looks unissued. These rifles were from the Shah's days when the soldiers would wear white gloves and march up and down the square with them. They were made by BRNO in Czechoslovakia and are renowned for their accuracy. The lettering is all in Persian (Farsi) and this one I'm told translates to Persian year of manufacture 1317, which is 1938 in our years. The story I heard on the lack of bluing is SAMCO tried cleaning them with an aggressive solvent and it removed the bluing.

I bought a crate of ammo with it too. All were FTF's and hang-fires, so I saved the components for reloading as the brass and projectiles were salvageable.

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

9 I'm here!!!!

No range report. Just looking at rifles and scopes and planning on when to pull the proverbial trigger on purchasing.

The rifle I am looking at is a Tikka T3x TACT A1.
One thing I would like to find out is if I buy a RH rifle, can I move the cheek piece to the other side of the stock as I prefer to shoot as a lefty as I am left eye dominant.
Things to research

25 My oldest ammo is Soviet and Romanian 54R, 80s production. Still in the spam can, stored decently. Have never had a dud/misfire/anything with all the sovbloc surplus I've shot over the years, not a one.

My old lead RSO at the range gave me a small number of yellow-tip (182g, "heavy ball") a few years back. First couple rounds were .... weird. Click (trigger pull), small but detectable pause - boom. After 3 rounds I decided to disassemble them and use the bullets some day when I reload 54R, if I ever do.

26 Had a very angry rattlesnake on the porch the other day.

Now I own a very flat shovel, and I have some .22 LR snake shot shells on the way. Should be good in the S&W Airweight revolver, as long as I'm willing to get it within 3-4 feet of the head, which is apparently the effective distance of that cartridge.

And here I thought that revolver was going to be useless to me, because I don't really enjoy shooting it.

30 This is weird. I am on the Tikka website and looking 2 rifles that are absolutely the same except for the weight.
One is 10.4 lbs the other is 9.9 lbs.

Trying to figure out where they took a half a pound off of the other rifle. Strange.

Posted by: Scuba_Dude at June 29, 2025 07:21 PM (0XVad)

31 Are you an adherent of WeaselDoctrine?

To be honest, no.

I think a 42mm limit on watch case size is arbitrary and capricious.

And while I can appreciate the philosophy behind 2 minutes or less from prep initiation to beginning consumption, that should be more of a guideline, rather than doctrine.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at June 29, 2025 07:22 PM (0sNs1)

32 And with that, range report: Silhouette version.

Yesterday, I took the 6.5-06 out for its first silhouette competition. Due to being extremely busy, I had no time to work out some dope for the various distances. Plus, the competition had been moved from the 500 meter range to the 1,000 yard range and distances increased by about 50 yards per row of targets.

Anyway, I decided to go with a "shoot one sighter and work from there" scenario, figuring I was going into the match without much information and would have to make it up on the fly. @300 yards, it took me until the 2nd to last target to get the scope correctly adjusted. Which I noted in my log book after we were done.

From there, I was perfect on the pigs @ 400 yards and the turkeys @ 500 yards. Alas, the pigs @ 600 yards had my number and I only got the last one. Still though, not dissatisfied with my efforts, considering new rifle and ammunition.

41 A year or more ago I commented here about some 1941 commercial 45ACP ammo I had been gifted at the range. April 1941 stamped on the box - sent a photo of the box in, Weasel put it on the thread, a few people translated the odd terms on it into current usage.

Anyway, schutzengild guy at the range - quite the expert on older guns and ammo - opined that the primer compound had degraded, as the formulation back then had limited shelf life. All rounds tried in my and the ammo owner's 1911s were duds.

48 Took the Walther PPK/S SD in .32 ACP to the range this weekend. At 7 yards, the pistol shoots to the sights. I added a 9mm suppressor and the point of impact appeared to shift high and left. Is this shift in point of impact consistent with most suppressors? Caveat: the suppressor blocks the sights, so aiming with the suppressor attached is approximate.

56 Splunge I typically carry a revolver and bring a speed loader of snake load starting this time of year at the range where I'm an RO. On-duty ROs are allowed to carry and I usually have a semi-auto most of the year.

There is a very strong preference to shoo/transport rattlers back into the chaparral when feasible (range is carved out of undeveloped land, snakes are not uncommon).

Your comment made me think that instead of carrying my nice little Colt Magnum Carry (2-inch barrel) I'll bring the S&W Model 66 (4-inch barrel). In the unlikely event of a snake shoot, that revolver should allow a bit more stand-off range.

Anyone familiar with the "pattern" for the CCI snake load shells? 38psl in particular.

80 For those who missed the ONT. The Senate has voted to bring the BBB to the floor. The senate over ruled the Parliamentarian on part of her finding that some of the BBB violated the Byrd rule - proving that the Parliamentarian is not some Bureaucratic god who must be obeyed. However, her obviously partisan ruling on the second amendment material STANDS. The Senate says that part of her ruling must be obeyed as though carved in stone tablets from Mt Sinai. So all of the NFA repeal stuff in the BBB is gone. The good news on the BBB is that Eye Patch McCain's stuff on Trannies is back in the Bill with the claim that IT does not violate the Byrd rule (which it obviously does). Meanwhile the anti NFA stuff which is clearly about taxation (and thus does not violate the Byrd rule) must be deleted from the Bill. This is because the 2A is the Red Headed Step Child of Constitutional rights which can be kicked down the stairs and ignored at will. Its more of a suggestion than a Right anyway. So shut up and quit your whining, Peon.

83 I am in Central Florida (not at blaster acres - headed there this weekend) and nearby is a range that goes out to 830 yards! sra blaster says bring down her rifle. Well we look at the website and it says you have to qualify at 400 yards before they let you shoot on the big range. Okay, fair enough.

A little further in the reading - you can shoot on the big range if you are a member or gues of a member. Well dang.

Good news is on the way back up we will be near the 600 yard range in SC, and it is open to the public.

Starting package is the Walmart Greeter tactic, show friendly interest that they have decided to come out in costume and get in some training.

Ask too many friendly questions. The costumes are to get a reaction: Give them one, just not the one they want. When they get weird, let them create a cause to be rejected with prejudice from the range by their own actions.

If not, its just theater and not worth losing sleep over. They will likely go back with their after action reports to their retarded friends, so keep that in mind.

97 "An Observation", thanks for the comment. Well stated on the BBB and NFA/parliamentarian's ruling. Have not looked at details, but ruling that provision - which affected a clearly unconstitutional law saved only by the farcical judiciary's ruling that it "is a tax" (sound familiar?) - violated the Byrd rule is darkly hilarious. Reconciliation bill's basic germaneness test is whether something affects (non-discretionary) spending, or revenue (taxes). So the "tax" issue was ...... not germane to reconciliation.

And thanks for repeating something that few (understandably) know - rulings of the chair (parliamentarian) can be challenged and put to a vote of the Senate. Astonished that the Senate GOP actually over-ruled on anything of value, haven't seen details. Such tussles are fairly rare.

108 That Persian rifle is very cool. My Italian grandfather had an ancient Italian rifle that was decades old when he was a kid and brought it when he came to USA. Imagine that happening today!

It was quite the prestigious gun I’m told, but sadly it was lost to time and nobody in my family living today remembers what it was or what happened to it. My mom (his daughter) remembers he was very proud of it. She remembers him shooting it, but she never got the chance to shoot it because it was too powerful for her. She was shooting 22s at the time, and even that had some serious kick for a girl who probably wasn’t even 10 years old at the time.

109 @79, Taro "I wonder if that Persian Mauser was a ceremonial rifle and the "bright" finish is original.".

SAMCO had lots of those back in the day. They had tried cleaning with an aggressive solvent and it removed/damaged the bluing so they just stripped them and sold them in the white. I was afraid of rust, but my gunsafe has a heat stick and I keep EVA-dry rechargeable mini dehumidifiers in the safes. Its been in the safe since feb 2012 with no rust.

I would never ask what their intentions are or inquire about the mask; that is what they want. I would admire their firearms, ask them how they respond to the recoil.

But judging by the shout-text, I'm thinking that they were creepy intimidating. You also mentioned that it take you off your game.

That is actually a good thing. In Krav Maga, the instructors, particularly when going to the San Antonio fun house, or doing field trips to bars to practice in situations, the whole goal is to create an uncomfortable environment - loud noise, flashing lights, people shoving you around, etc. to work on technique, to overcome the distractions to focus on the work at hand.

Oh well, you are here safe and sound, so all is good.

114 At the range I see all kinds - but not antifa troons are a new one for me.

The people who concern me at my range are the crowds of Asians - like a whole family. Not because they are Asian - but because they come in a large group that is all new (you can tell because they all went to the training video and have range issued eyes and ears). Often not speaking English (which is a concern because the RSOs ARE speaking English).

Seems like its a family coming to visit someone in the US who is like "you are here in the US you should go shoot a gun!" That's cool. But a bunch of total newbs at the range make me nervous.

143 What Ed L. said (as usual).

There are many non-"alarmist" reasons to stock up on ammo.

As RI Red pointed out, dollar-cost averaging. Or simply hedging against price increases.

Living in CA, I (correctly for once) predicted something, that the normal online vendor ammo purchasing thing would be f***ed with by the idiotic state guvamint. Sure enough. Now, you can still get direct delivery if you have a federal FFL-03, plus do a fingerprint thing - but I let my C&R license lapse because I was pretty much done buying milsurps. And I reload anyway, so hadn't bought factory in years when the law came around.

Anyway, everyone's circumstances and considerations are different, but stocking up on ammo makes sense for many different reasons. None of them related to the Burning Times that aren't coming (they're here, for years, most just define "burning" incorrectly).

It was a best-ball format. I think they used Trump's ball several times. Playing with the US Open champion. Trump is pretty damn good at golf.

The power of the PGA guy, on his drives, was almost scary. Hitting a golf ball as hard as a major leaguer swings at a pitch is a pretty amazing bit of coordination and talent.

We’re all conservatives so we hated Obama. But how many people get to shake the hand of the president of the USA? My brother said something like ‘it’s an honor to meet the president of the USA,’ without mentioning who the president was. Oh and Obama was a shitty golfer.

He tells me that distributors are already planning to raise their prices on guns (or guns w/ imported parts) by about 10% to account for the tariffs kicking in when current stocks are exhausted (as soon as next month for some high demand stuff). So if you've got your eye on something you really want, you might want to get it PDQ before the price hikes take effect.

Went to roam around the new Bass Pro in Tyler - been ages since I was anywhere that had reloading equipment for sale.

It wasn't that long ago when you needed the luck associated with winning the lottery to find and the actually winning of the lottery to purchase primers.

Now they had whole shelves loaded up with primers. While they had a good variety of loaded ammunition for the major calibers including 10mm, I didn't see any of the exotics like .460S&W or .50AE

166 By the way there is an ugly loop hole in federal law for Constitutional carry states. Federal law makes it (felony) illegal to carry within 1000 ft of a school zone without a state issued concealed carry permit. Since I live with in 1000 ft of a school I have an easily obtained New Hampshire permit to cover that. You almost can't drive anywhere in Houston without being with in 1000 ft of a school zone. I chose not to get a TX permit, because I am worried about TX turning blue, and I don't want the local commies to know I carry.

I recommend that you carry a copy of your paperwork as a best practice. It establishes ownership on an NFA item, which the po-po can get excited about. If you're transporting NFA stuff across state lines, you really must carry not just a copy of your Form 1/4, but a copy of the "permission slip" BATFE issues that legally allows you to travel across state lines w/ your NFA toys.

187 FWIW,
First, ". . .any single senator may raise a point of order against subject matter newly inserted by the conference committee without objecting to the rest of the bill. Proponents of the measure may move to waive the rule. The affirmative vote of 60 senators is required to waive the rule. If the point of order is not waived and the chair rules that the objection is well-founded, only the offending provision is stricken from the measure, and the Senate votes on sending the balance of the measure back to the House."
BUT
"The Congressional Budget Act of 1974 limits debate on conference reports on budget resolutions and budget reconciliation bills to ten hours in the Senate, so senators cannot filibuster those conference reports."

Unclear whether the NFA exclusions if the House reverts would count as a new matter or not.

Capture papers and/or documentation attesting to the Army granting permission for a servicemember to bring home a captured enemy firearm adds to the value of these firearms on the collector's market. It documents the history of the firearm and its use by the enemy before its capture.

Rhomboid, I would have to contact my friend at teh Senate Historical society because as seen above, the Budget Act does not allow filibusters by statute overriding Senate rules in that instance.

However, bringing up a 'new' matter in conference can result in the conference report being filibustered when normally they cannot under Senate Rules.

Whether reinserting the removal from the NFA from the House in the overall budget conference report probably means that there is a precedent somewhere by the Senate Parliamentarian.

Rulewise, I think any Parliamentarian ruling something in a conference report in or out would be of dubious when applied to this narrow issue.

From House Budget Committee website.
"Reconciliation Conference Agreement Procedures

Even though a conference agreement cannot be amended, it is still subject to Byrd rule requirements in the Senate. Thus, although the Byrd rule does not apply in the House, it constrains what can be included in the reconciliation conference agreement. A provision violating the Byrd rule can be struck from the conference agreement on the Senate floor unless 60 Senators vote to waive the point of order. Stripping a provision due to a Byrd rule violation does not mean the conference agreement is defeated, just that the agreement will be sent to the House without the stripped provision."

206 Thanks, whig. I would think the statutory privileged nature of everything related to the Budget Act would apply to conference reports as well, so yeah no filibuster.

Never worked with the Byrd Rule or reconciliation, so zero background with those.

Though I did happen to be on the floor when Byrd had perhaps his most famous joust with the parliamentarian. Byrd was a true Senate rules/history expert (last of his kind).

He challenged the ruling of the chair. In the end it came down to whether a footnote in the Senate rules denoted in Roman, or Arabic, numerals. Not kidding. This had significance for whatever the dispute was. Parliamentarian checked for a bit, then conceded Byrd was correct. Laughter, shaking heads, and some applause on the floor, and in the gallery. Pretty interesting.

207 whig that's interesting. And perhaps the 60-vote requirement applies just to over-ruling the chair in Budget Act proceedings. In any case, seems NFA provision is deader than an Iranian general.

208 FWIW, it was not the 10th but 9th as I forgot Montana is in the 9th misbegotten Circuit.

From Ammoland
(AmmoLand.com)- In the Ninth Circuit appeals case of USA v. Metcalf, the oral arguments were held on June 12, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. The case centers around the federal prosecution of Gabriel Metcalf for possessing a firearm in a gun free school zone outside his home in Billings, Montana. Gabriel had no prior criminal history.

The oral arguments lasted 38 minutes. The judges in the case were particularly interested in whether the case of Rehaif v. United States was a precedent that was binding in the Metcalf case.
In Rehaif, the Supreme Court ruled that the prosecution had to show the defendant knew he was in violation of the law.

In the Metcalf case, Gabriel Metcalf had been repeatedly told he was not in violation of the law and had called the FBI to ask for assistance, believing he was being harassed by local law enforcement.

209 However, bringing up a 'new' matter in conference can result in the conference report being filibustered when normally they cannot under Senate Rules.

Talk to Thune. He is the one deferring to the parliamentarian. But dropping the tax on SBR and Suppressors is not nothing and that is what is in the current Senate bill. The House was afraid of the Byrd rule and went back and forth over simply moving the tax to zero or removing it.

223 Two-decade lurker here. Sorry, I'm shy.

This week I took #1 kid (18F) to NRA HQ in Fairfax, VA, for "basic handgun safety". It had been more than 3 decades since I took a gun safety course myself for deer hunting. I'm an Appalachian through-and-through, but my kids are, alas, NoVA suburb girls.

Had a WONDERFUL time. The range was so very nice. The instructor was fantastic, and the Daddy/Daughter time will be cherished for years.

My two regrets:
a) not doing it sooner; and
b) my girl -- the athlete who does everything well -- was so good, the instructor asked her to come back to start competitive shooting drills.

I'm not so green that I can get suckered that easily, but darn, she is a good shot.

Anyway, just wanted to share how nice it was to spend a few hours with my kid having fun.

Back to the shadows....

The initial Byrd ruling by the Parliamentarian was that removing the SBR and Suppressors from the NFA was a policy matter and thus violated the Byrd Rule. Thune came back with setting the tax to zero for both and that passed the Parliamentarian muster as did the changes in Medicaid, etc. The Byrd Bath is where the Senate majority tries to get around the Parliamentarian rulings by massaging the language.

The problem got worse when I decided to pick up an irresistibly-priced used Dan Wesson PM-38 in .38 Super. I got it home and detail stripped it, and I don't think it has ever been fired. Turns out I really like shooting .38 Super, it's like 9mm but with just that extra bit of oomph that hints at the .45 experience. So now I have one more caliber whose stock I have to worry about.

On the bright side, if there is another supply crunch, it could turn out that .38 Super doesn't disappear as fast as the popular stuff.

228 A provision violating the Byrd rule can be struck from the conference agreement on the Senate floor unless 60 Senators vote to waive the point of order. Stripping a provision due to a Byrd rule violation does not mean the conference agreement is defeated, just that the agreement will be sent to the House without the stripped provision."

SUMMARY ON THE COURE D' ALENE, IDAHO SHOOTING, WHERE MULTIPLE FIREFIGHTERS WERE AMBUSHED WHILE RESPONDING TO A WILDFIRE: (PRELIMINARY)

- At 1:21 pm, reports were received of a fire on the east side of Canfield Mountain. Firefighters responded to the scene. At approximately 2 pm, it was reported that firefighters were 'receiving shots fired at them'.

- There are at least 2 deaths and an unknown amount of casualties. The two deceased is believed to be firefighters.

- It is believed that civilians may be stuck or shock on the mountain.

- The sheriff said this is a very very fresh and active situation and that 'we are actively taking sniper fire as we speak,' adding that they're prepared to take down/neutralize the suspect.

- It is believed that modern sporting, high-powered rifles are being used, per sheriff.

- The sheriff said that shelter-in-place order will remain in effect and is encouraging everyone to tell people to stay away from the area. "If these individuals are not neutralized quickly, this is gonna be a likely a multi-day operation."

Posted by: andycanuck at June 29, 2025 09:21 PM (2yoRf)

230 - It remains unclear on if there are additional shooters, sheriff says. "We don't know if there's 1, 2, 3 or 4."

- Quoted by the sheriff: "I'm hoping somebody has a clear shot and is able to neutralize because they're not, at this point in time, showing any evidence of wanting to surrender. So as soon as someone has a clear shot, I encourage them to take that shot and neutralize the threat."

- A reporter asked: "We know there's at least 1 but you said possibly others. Is it coming from multiple different locations that bullets are coming from that might indicate…" The sheriff responded with: "Yes. Oh, yeah. Yep. It's what the officers and deputies are reporting up on the mountain right now."

- A press conference may occur in the next 3-4 hours, unless something significant happens.

Yes and no. The nuclear option of overruling the parliamentarian would change the precedent but be available for Dems if and when they take back over the chamber. Reid's nuclear option overriding the parliamentarian for circuit court nominations meant that McConnell could and did extend that to presidential nominees and Scotus judges when the GOP took the chamber.

236 The Persian Mauser reminds me of freezing-ass inventory counts in Georgia, VT.

I worked for a CPA firm in Burlington VT and one of our clients was Century Arms. Their HQ was down in Boca Raton (naturally) but their warehouse was in VT. We would spend a day or two every January observing their inventory count. It was in an old brick building with no heat, and it was not uncommon for it to be colder inside that building than outside. The workers had a heated break room, but most of their work was absolutely freezing.

We counted thousands of Mauser, thousands of M-1's tens of thousands of bayonets. I remember more current CETME's and such. Their hook was they only had to change X number of parts to make them sell-able in the US. This was 20+ years ago.

Since then, they've gone to a new heated warehouse and are selling mostly current manufacturered stuff. It was an interesting business model. And those poor workers used to freeze their asses off!

How is the workmanship on it MAE? I've wanted one of those but ended up settling years ago on the more mundane 40 S&W. Brass and components were dirt cheap for a long while and still cheaper than 45 ACP. Reloading is more of a PITA though due to cartridge pressure and need to avoid any chance of bullet setback.

Make sure you rotate that stuff. Powder deterioration can set in after about twenty to 30 years for double based powder and about 50 or so for single based. If you pull a bullet and it looks like rust or you see extensive corrosion, those are warning signs that the acid stabilizers are gone in the powder. In cannister powder, you can get the same thing if you get a really acrid smell and the powder is discolored. Dispose of it by using it as high nitrogen fertilizer for flowers but not food plants.

Father retired as a colonel after running ammo dumps (ordnance) for most of his career in the Big Green Machine. if you dig the publications up, ammo testing procedures are there.

Wet, heat, and/or caustic surrounds like nearness to an ocean can wreak havoc on ammo storage as well.

They still get those 'gunsmith' specials in now and again and they do sell antiques (as defined by firearm law) without requiring a FFL or C&R.

The C&R is worth it if you want to buy things like that as last time I checked, it was about 30 bucks for three years and they can send firearms on the C&R list directly to your house as you are technically a FFL in that case.

Posted by: whig at June 29, 2025 09:50 PM (ctrM5)

265 Oh, a consideration. A lot of folks bought old corroded case ammo and tumbled it to get rid of the corrosion. Some indication though that old powder, especially stick, can have its burn rate changed by tumbling.

If you fire some and it seems 'hot', break down the components and use them for reloading.

.270 Win seemed very resilient.
Maybe not trendy anymore but still common enough that everyone has it. Last two periods of completely bare shelves it seemed to be the last cartridge on the shelf... and from a boltie prolly not much different than today's darling 6.5 creedmore.

275 Windbag, good choice on the Sig. If I’m out for a quick trip a good quality iwb holster works well as long as the shorts have a good drawstring. Go up a size on the t-shirt. Longer time I go with shorts and a belt.
