Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() The last commandant told the nation that amphibious operations were obsolete and the Navy could get by with fewer amphibious ships. Consequently he released it from the commitment to maintain enough ships to maintain a 24-7 amphibious presence in the world’s most likely trouble spots (the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, and the Western Pacific). Now, the current commandant says we need more big deck amphibs to maintain the 24-7 commitment; but he enthusiastically supported the last guy’s position when he was the Assistant Commandant. When asked how many amphibious ships the Marine Corps’ current Assistant Commandant could not come up with a number. The senior marine leaders have now admitted that they cannot logistically support the new anti-China force — that they call Force Design — due to Navy procurement failures in contracting the new small amphibious ships needed to support the concept. After six years not a single keel has been laid even though the Marine Corps gave up much of its conventional combat power to create the new concept called “Force Design.” Amphibious operations are obsolete in 2019, but magically reappear as a military option just a few years later? And General David Berger (Trump's appointee), who was clearly a hyper-political buffoon, was allowed to alter radically the mission of a 250 year old military organization without significant push-back from the civilians who should know better? It is entirely possible that the future of the United States Marine Corps will shift away from the current doctrine. It is also possible that they will remain an amphibious force. But one thing is certain; it is incumbent upon the senior leadership and their civilian bosses to make sure that they can complete their missions...whatever those will be! And without the equipment for their fancy new direction, the Marines will be a bunch of riflemen with no way to get into the fight. There have been politics in the military forever. Every country has to deal with it. But when politics is ascendant, and the mission is secondary, that is a problem. General Berger may have had the best intentions, or he may have been a political hack who pushed his own crackpot idea just to have something unique to differentiate himself from the other monkeys on the flagpole. I have my suspicions, but either way, the civilian oversight failed the Marine Corps, and it failed America. The current tone in the defense department is gratifying to see, with the Secretary of Defense stripping away much of the extraneous nonsense and focusing on one thing...the mission of fighting and winning wars. But he can't do it alone, and Congress must take seriously its oversight, and make sure that the massive defense budget is spent on things that make that mission possible, and not on pie-in-the-sky predictions about the future of warfare. That doesn't mean that our armed forces should remain static. On the contrary, they must be at the cutting edge of new technology (drones anyone?) and new developments in strategic issues. But they must be able to win current battles before they shift to fighting future battles! TBH, I kind of agree with his first assessment. There is an argument against the waterborne assault ships in favor of essentially Marine airborne assaults using helicopters and Ospreys. The idea is to stay further from shore and it's missile batteries. The latest Marine ship lacks the wet deck well for hovercraft and small boats but can carry more aircraft.

The problems with our military infrastructure are many. For one, the procurement process is FUBAR'd. For another, the design and construction phases are also FUBAR'd.
Even if the requirements for a ship, plane or tank were drawn up and agreed upon, eventually someone, somewhere is going to want changes. Take the Navy's latest frigate for example. It's based on a design by Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Wisconsin. That was agreed on. But the Navy's brass and congress have fiddled with that design for years, pushing the actual construction back by more years. And causing significant design changes that affect the ship's original mission. China is building dozens of warships a year. I question their quality, but that's another story. The US can't build one warship of any kind in a year. Posted by: Martini Farmer at July 03, 2025 11:16 AM (Q4IgG) 56

People need to understand that the Big Beautiful Bill is an existential crisis for Democrats. For years their strategy has been: 1. Flood the USA with tens of millions of illegal aliens. 2. Count them in the census. 3. Get dozens of extra House seats and Electoral College votes. 4. Make the illegals dependent on wealth redistribution from you and me. 5. Have them vote illegally. 6. Give them amnesty. 7. Have them vote legally. This was their path to perpetual power. But the BBB, by funding the Wall, and ICE, and cutting the handouts, this is all coming undone. It's the death rattle of the Democrat Party. Add "Democrats" to the list of things Donnie is killing with his touch!! Posted by: Lizzy at July 03, 2025 11:16 AM (VVnrT) 58

8 Amphibious operations are obsolete in 2019, but magically reappear as a military option just a few years later?
====== 2019, China was not viewed as much as a strategic problem and now it is. But, I think the heyday of amphibious landings attacking a peer rival has passed due to the new world of robotic warfare--missiles, drones, and probably actual robots soon. Amphibious is still very useful for contingency operations out of third world crapholes in order to rescue US citizens, etc. because you need options besides airplanes for such operations. And every one that is selected has had their name passed through both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, plus a few others for approval. A single.black mark and no promotion.
This is why their tours spent on the Hill and at the Pentagon become so important. That is where they get to see and be seen, and hope the Congress critter they made friends with got re-elected when the promotion board forwarded the names. Posted by: Diogenes at July 03, 2025 11:30 AM (1bdKO) 134

Posted by: whig at July 03, 2025 11:30 AM (ctrM5) Trump1, we expected Trump2 level of changes with "drain the swamp" appeals. We got an active coup attempting to remove him from office, and in the aftermath, active attempts or at least complicity in lawfare to imprison him or assassinate him. In Trump2, we're getting some more vigorous attempts at using the system to takeout some of the worst abuses such as USAID, open-borders, culture war atrocities such as child-castration. Yet, nobody has gone to prison for such things as the coup(s), the J6 political imprisonments, the election cheating and coverup (in J6), the evidence destruction by the J6 fake committee, COVID, etc. Too many pigs at the trough to change the system beyond the fringes like what is happening in Trump2. My common refrain is "hang them all," because that is really the only way you are going to have lasting change from the abuses we've seen these last ten years. And that is most decidedly change OUTSIDE of the system. Posted by: Comrade Flounder, Disinformation Demon at July 03, 2025 11:39 AM (i24o9) 177

The U.S. Air Force has developed a means to launch small drones from its KC-135 aerial refueling tankers, and is now looking at adding that capability to the fleet. Can we seize a foreign port without an amphibious landing? I think the likely answer is no.
--------------- The Amphibious Marines seized a foreign airport (Bagram) with CH-53s and LAV-25s. The Army Airborne were very embarrassed by this. The Army, in reaction to the Marines air assault success started the Stryker Program. The funny thing is the LAV-25 was an Army Program that the Army asked the Marines to take the lead to solve a simple problem of having to explain why the Army needed two tanks to Congress. The LAV-25 was designed to be the Army's Cavalry combat vehicle in support of the M1 main battle group. At the time of LAV production the Army decided its cavalry need could be solved using up armored HMMWVs. Thus the Marines had a vehicle that they really had no particular need for but discovered it was easily deployable. History - its a bitch. Posted by: pudinhead at July 03, 2025 11:41 AM (W3T6M) 187

But think about where they would be had it not been for him. Staving their bs off is worth something even if you can't stop them.
Reagan did it and we had a good 25 years in spite of them. A quarter century is not to be sniffed at, plus the Democrats, reckless Republicans and Media had lulled this country into a kind of sleepy hypnosis. It took almost 10 years for Trump to break the spell and it's going to be difficult for them to conjure that genie again. Posted by: ... at July 03, 2025 11:40 AM (VPwHp) The "it could be worse" argument is valid, but it doesn't really change anything. The Uniparty and the Deep State rule. Not the voters. I believe Trump was sincere in wanting to change that. And maybe some of his appointees are sincere as well. But this Big Bullshit Bill is a loss. No matter what the cheerleaders say. It's a loss, because it just keeps funding everything. Why Trump wanted it in the first place is beyond me, but the Mike Johnsons of the world sure do enjoy not having to actually do anything. From JJ's Morning Report, where Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington was mentioned. I will neither accept any pronouncements of what constitutes non-bigoted behavior nor standards proposed for the same from someone whose position is due greatly to them or their forebears having been atop the most bigoted society on Earth, that of India and the Indian subcontinent. Such people would be purged and banned from positions of power here (I'm looking at you, tech giants) and the H1B program which opened the sluices to bring more of their ilk over here would be permanently closed. Posted by: It's me donna at July 03, 2025 11:19 AM Yes, the U.S. House of Representatives has a practice informally known as the "magic minute" or "special minute." This is not an official rule but a customary privilege granted primarily to party leaders, such as the Speaker of the House, the Majority Leader, and the Minority Leader, during floor debates. What is the Magic Minute? Under House rules, debate time is strictly limited, often to a few minutes per member, as set by the Rules Committee. However, when recognized to speak for one minute, certain leaders are allowed to exceed this limit without being interrupted, effectively speaking for as long as they wish, provided they hold the floor. This is called the "magic minute" because the one-minute time limit is essentially waived for these privileged members. What would they do when they get there? An Osprey can carry a very small load. It isn't like D-Day, when they'd be rescued by 150,000 troops on the first day. The age of hiding a huge landing force are long over. Again, it would take the Chinese months to prep their invasion force, and it would be discovered long before it sailed. The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey can carry 24 combat troops. It can also carry up to 32 troops if seated on the floor, or 864 cubic feet of cargo. At least the DoD has begun to look at the old, WWII era Pacific Island air strips as (they call them) "austere" for potential "island hopping" movement of troops and materials should we end up engaged with China. And have finally begun to sort out how to kill, on the ground before they're used, China's vast arsenal of conventionally armed ballistic missiles. Some for anti-ship duty, others for traditional ground attack.

And Newt was better than any speaker in the 50 years preceding him. What is making Johnson effective? Simple, really. He is allied with Trump, tries to do what Trump wants, and has Trump standing behind him. As far as I'm concerned, that's all I want out of a speaker right now. Posted by: Comrade Flounder Males can often manage if they look at their task as something bigger than themselves--going to Mars, restoring the Republic, etc. Females have to deal with the fact of being socially ostracized if their values do not follow their social network.
