I re-read democracy in america recently, and that was something de Tocqueville marveled at. How nearly everyone was literate, including the farm hands who were reading books while plowing the fields, etc.

That said, much of the country did have some version of public schools back then. More like neighborhood schools where the people would pay a housewife to teach all the kids in the area the basics of reading and math, then the kids were expected to go from there. Very different from what it has become.

From what I've read, the strikes targeted the UF6 storage antechamber, potentially collapsing it, and the ventilation system.

The UF6 Iran was using was in gaseous form. It's gaseous at 135 degrees and needs to stay there. So, it's not like just throwing it on the back of a truck to cart away.

And that doesn't even touch on any potential damage to centrifuges that have lost power, assumedly.

Yeah that's how it worked. In the original 14 colonies (yes, yes, I'll include Vermont), some states had some level of compulsory education requirements, others did not.

But interestingly, the US had what was likely the highest literacy rates in the world, even with New Hampshire, for example, not requiring kids learn how to read. Turns out people wanted their kids to learn how to read, even if the government didn't require it.

The idea being, of course, that you cant be a self governing republic if the people don't understand the issues. Illiterate people were often not allowed to vote (depending on the state) until SCOTUS said that was racist.

We we're trying to work backwards from a normal school day to figure out how much time for instruction we should allot to begin home school. We came up conservatively at 4 hours, taking into account all the farm animal shuffling around and other overhead.

I talked to a teacher friend of mine who disabused me of such generous accounting by saying 2 hours max (elementary level).

That's a full six hours of nothing but "socilization" (a/k/a indoctrination and herd mentality building) and babysitting. And we pay for that shit.

Sounds like you're describing the 1982 Turkish film "The Man Who Saved The World." Not only is it a sci-fi puree it literally uses Star Wars footage and Indiana Jones music.
