Gun Thread: Post-NoVAMoMe Discussion and Analysis Edition!

062225 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Balls O' Poo! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the 2025 Post NoVAMoMe Discussion and Analysis Edition??? Please consider this an open thread to discuss your NoVAMoMe experience, or really any other MoMe for that matter. Who knows, you may help a scairdy-cat lurker throw caution to the wind and commit to attending one!

NoVAMoMe Update
A bigly big thank you to all those who attended the 2025 NoVAMoMe! It is always so much fun to see our online pals and make some new freshly de-lurking friends as well! The weather was perfect and as far as I could tell everyone had a great time visiting one another. My bestest blog buddy, organizer and generally nice person extraordinaire bluebell and I thank everyone for attending. Hopefully those who were there will inspire others to join the fun at a MoMe near them!

Have I said it's fun?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

9 Sorry, but Dance Monkey is a terrible song. It somehow got internationally popular because the original singer sang it like she was drunk and constipated. A pure novelty song. Like of a rock band decided to write a song where the lyrics were all in farts.

I really need to find a range in Pittsburgh....

36 On Juneteenth I celebrated the end of chattel slavery in the US (thanks to the Republicans!) by shooting with TRex and Grateful. It was a mostly Sig show. P365 XL, Macro, and 2 P226's.

And an Extar EP9 which is not a Sig.

Shot lots that day. I was trying to get rid of the green coated reman ammo and I got pretty close to taking that totally out of inventory.

And also learned the following - some people are incompatible with dots. It's a vision thing.

You get to meet people you know and catch up on everything since the last time you saw them...you get to meet and talk to people who post but whom you've never met...and you get to meet people who read but don't comment - and encourage them to jump in the comments.
As usual, it was a delightful afternoon of conversations, jokes, food, beverages, cigars (for those that do), planning for TX, celebrating major life events, and getting an opportunity to be a part of Club ONT that night. Aside from all of that, it is deeply rewarding to break bread with this family, and I am very "grateful" to be able to do it in NoVa, TX, and where ever we travel and can meet up with local Horde members. Thank you Ben Had for starting this tradition.

It should be noted that -57 is the model designation for S&Ws chambered in the best handgun caliber ever, the .41 Magnum.

44 So, it sounds like the The Mergenthaler Linotype Linotron 505 might be considered a primitive electro-optical, electro-mechanical physical markup language.

I wonder if Donald Knuth had ever seen one before he invented TeX? As I recall, frustration with the typesetting of one of his books was what inspired him to go down the rabbit hole of inventing TeX and it's descendants.

(Sorry for going off-topic, but it's Weasel's fault for linking that video).

Well, I missed the Sunday post MoMe range date because I was feeling a bit punky but in my defense, I believe it is the first time that has happened.
The MoMe was terrific. A bit smaller but that made for more conversation. Think I recruited a few locals to come and check out where we shoot and to join us sometime. (If I didn't get your contact info, email me).
Thank you Weasel and Bluebell for making this happen. ❤️

53 Today the post MoMe shooting involved a smaller detachment. TRex and myself and Ed L. led an intrepid band of morons and moronabees (okay, it was RMBS, his mom, and the spouse of a lurker) and there was BLOOD.

A little slide bite. I carry a first aid kit to range day so it was survivable.

Also, I took my PSA Dagger which I have not shot in a while. I had that (with a cheapie green dot) and my Legion P226 with its Sig Romeo 1 Pro red dot.

I shoot the Dagger WAY better than the P226 which is annoying as the Sig is more than 4x the cost of the Dagger.

Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at June 22, 2025 07:42 PM (RoO7G)

54 Well, I had to miss the NoVaMoMe this year, and was really bummed about that - especially the DMVMGC time.

But I *did* get to the range on Saturday. The activity on Saturday (that kept me from NoVaMoMe) got cancelled (for sad reasons), and I said "Screw it" to all the things I could have used that time for and went to the big First Day of Summer event at the range/gun store. They had Kimber, Glock, S&W, and Staccato reps there, along with a silencer guy, a local holster company, and some guy with bags. And free range time (didn't matter for me, as my range time is free anyway). But lots of people there with newbies, guy next to me with a full-auto, belt-fed 5.56 (maybe he checked it out of the Navy gun locker and brought it down to train the other guy). (It might have been 7.62, too.)

I was working on some bits using fundamentals. I did a little just-above-the-belt point-shooting. And then bringing it up to my eye level to see how close I was to natural aimpoint. A lot of 1-hand shooting.

57 Range report, once again starring the Glock 26 (G30 is benched again until I can get a new recoil spring).
The G26 continues to impress me. I thought the grip was too short but the 12 round magazines (The Magpul one is slightly better for me) give me a full grip on the pistol. I just have to watch reloading or I'll get some skin pinch.

I'm shooting 147 gr rounds almost exclusively now and out of the 3" barrel of the G26, the recoil is surprisingly mild. Maybe it's the double spring design, not sure, but it works.

Accuracy is more than fine, draw + fire drills are good at both 7 and 10 yards. And my Don Hume IWB holster is here and I'm breaking it in. The G26 is officially my Summer carry, along with my PSA Micro Dagger.

Good stuff.

60 What did I learn?

Aside from needing more range time, that is? I need to clean and function check my carry weapon. I need to get a SOLID grip on the gun early if I'm going to expect to not have any problems point-shooting early out of the holster.

I need to figure out the proper seating of my hands on the 9mm for a proper pointing grip. I still like shooting the .45 more than the 9mm, and I'm better at it.

And, when I finished off with the .22, I was really anticipating the shot. I have to work on that.

I also learned I need to win a lottery game so I can buy a couple of Kimbers and the S&W .357 revolver. (I still want the Python 2020, but that S&W was really nice trigger pull.)

RMBS and lurker spouse tried the H&K CC9 with one or two magazines each. Definitely not a newbie's gun.

RMBS, lurker spouse, and RMBS mom shot the .32 ACP Walther PPK/S SD w/ a suppressor. With a little more practice, RMBS mom might qualify for her 00 number. RMBS thinks this should make the trip to TX.

Almost everyone fired five rounds from the H&K MR556A4 SBR (11" barrel). BIG muzzle flash and loud muzzle blast with every round.

RMBS and lurker spouse tried out the MP5 at 15 yards. An OK showing for the first time w/ an SMG.

68 Today the post MoMe shooting involved a smaller detachment.

LWRC 45ACP carbine. Not feather-light, but as a result recoil is minimal. Guy had the red dot zeroed very well, so pick it up, couple of quick shots at a steel plate about 35 yards away - ping, ping, ping. These PCCs are just the easiest platforms evah.

An AR 15, because I bought several before the law changed.

Some states, the Mini-14 is a good alternatives (if you get a recent mfg).

For home defense, a shotgun may be better than a rifle. For other rifle roles, it depends on what you want to use the rifle for.

93 Buddy brought his friend to our weekly skeet shoot. Friend had never shot skeet. Buddy told him to bring shells with #9 shot if he could find them, #8 shot if he couldn't. Friend shows up with his family 12 gauge shotgun, and ammo, and we start shooting. There are 25 shots in a round of skeet.

After 10 shots, friend says he is out of #9 ammo. He has not hit a single target. We pause while he gets some more ammo, this time with #8 shot, from the car. He suddenly begins breaking clay pigeons. He continues hitting the targets, doing quite well for a beginner.

When we are done shooting he shows us the empty ammo box from his first 10 shots. In large letters on the box was "9 Pellet." He had started out shooting 00 buckshot loads, which only have nine pellets per round, as opposed to the 400 or so in a load of #8s.

I do feel my heavy turkey loads a bit, but you are trying to be stealthy, so I don't know if that alters my perception.

I could tell he was shooting full power loads, but that is not unusual to see at the range. The budget 12 gauge shot shells tend to give you your money's worth, with a whole ounce and an eighth of shot and enough gunpowder to operate the crankiest of semi autos.

Me, I load my own gauge target loads, with only 3/4 oz. of shot, which is plenty for just breaking a target. In a heavy shotgun, they almost feel like you are shooting a .22

Five points of contact without counting the sling. For me, its the best CQB configuration available. Has the ergos of the AR but can be stuffed into a tennis racket case.
