Australia is moving closer to banning children from social media - which is impossible - after a story commission by the government showed that banning children from social media - which is impossible - is possible though they won't say how and admitted that there is no method that actually works. This kind of bullshit gets routinely slapped down in the US on First Amendment grounds, but we don't have a First Amendment here. We don't have any amendments. Thanks (apparently) to the influence of "philosophers" like Jeremy Bentham around the time our constitution was being drafted, we don't have any negative rights at all.
The trials project director, Tony Allen, said there were "no significant technological barriers" to stopping under-16s gaining social media accounts.
This man has not only never met a teenager, he was apparently born fifty years old.

Tech News

The Crucial P510 is a "cheap" PCIe 5.0 SSD. (Tom's Hardware)

It's 10% cheaper than Crucial's own T710, and 30% slower, and lacks a DRAM cache.

Making it very close to twice the price Crucial's PCIe 4.0 T500 - which I have and which works perfectly well - for a likely unnoticeable speed improvement.
AMD's Ryzen 9000G has been put to the test and offers an unnoticeable speed improvement over the 8000G for its integrated graphics. (WCCFTech)

Which was expected because it's the desktop version of a laptop chip that we know needs fast memory to get the full use out of its integrated GPU, and with regular desktop memory it doesn't have that.

Of more interest is how it performs in CPU tasks with its 4 Zen 5 and 8 Zen 5c cores, against the existing chips with 8 Zen 4 cores.

The matching laptop chips show a 15% speed gain but it might do better with a desktop power budget. Or not.

Tonight I saw a clip from the lefty media on whether Trump has dementia, of course it was to deflect the questions about Biden's obvious mental slippage. They quoted Trump as saying "Can I appoint myself?" in reference to some position.

I doubt they don't realize it was a joke, they are just so deranged with TDS they will say anything to make him look bad. Guess the jokes on them because even the average American realizes they are just lying shitweasels in the media.

18 Oh, never mind, Australia already passed this law in November of 2024, it's just got a one-year delayed effect and November of this year is not that far off.

Penalties seem to be issued in "Penalty Units" according to the text of the law, and searching that I find out that the number of units for a given offense is multiplied by the unit cost, as set by different regions of Australia, as low as $110 AUD and as high as $810 AUD.

63D Civil penalty for failing to take reasonable steps to prevent age‑restricted users having accounts

30,000 penalty units

So anywhere between $3.3M and $24.3M AUD per offense under just that section, and there are other sections too.

Yup, it's a shakedown, and the companies would be wise to do exactly what "I used to have a different nic" concluded in post # 10 above:

LOL. I guess it depends partially on the attitude one brings to where they live. They taxes are too high, there is too much development and too much traffic . On the other hand, there are lovely people I know and work with and beauties of nature as well. Yesterday in fringe to South Jersey I saw one magnificent people by the road and then an inn from the seventeen hundreds.

I am glad that the man after what is ityears in captivity can come home. I hope that he can find people to aid in his recovery.

I happened upon a local option to run IBM's Granite AI (and others) on Windows using Ollama if your hardware supports it. The smaller models (deepseek has a 5GB one) should be doable with modern GPUs, but the large models drag even with 16GB vram and 64GB system. Going to need a heavy lifting machine to run those with speed.

I only ever watched the CBS soaps, long, long ago.
My Grandma watched them when I visited her during summer vacation and she wouldn’t let me change the channel.

Suddenly I became interested in Bold and the Beautiful, Young and the Restless, As The World Turns and Guiding Light.

They only let me watch the Iran-Contra hearings one summer because Grandma and my aunt were eager to hear what Ollie North did to Fawn Hall.

Fawn is actually a pretty good girl’s name now that I think about it.

You’d think it would’ve become more popular, but no, we can’t have nice things, so Madison won out as a girls name in the late 80s.

angle brackets are used to mark out actual HTML tags. Allowing them in the user input could lead to unsavory things like injection attacks or other tomfoolery. So there's validation script that strips out those characters to prevent it ever even becoming a problem.

111 Looking at a 1950 Ford Delux 4dr sedan, with 3speed/overdrive V8. It's colored that real dark green that looks black under certain lighting. Presents very well has had 1 repaint in same green. A survivor that has been in the same family since 1955, an original Va car I can't find any rust on save the usual surface rust underneath all cars get. Napoleon III was nothing like his uncle when it came to battlefield prowess and Emperor Maximilian was pretty much useless.

They may have taken some land but it wouldn’t have been much of a problem to take it back.

The U.S. Army still had some decent experience so soon after the late unpleasantness.

Kids aren’t scared of screwing around with tech until it does something cool.

I was like that as a kid.
If something had to be done with the cable, tv, VCR, or home stereo system, or a computer, it became my job - forever.

Meanwhile, adults are hesitant to hit any buttons that they don’t know what they do because they’re scared they might break something.

Old people forget how curious, cunning, creative & courageous kids can be when they want to really do something.

And nowadays when one kid figures out how to get around something, every kid on the planet with internet access will know it within a month or so,

145 I never heard of Juneteenth until we moved from Baton Rouge to Houston late last century. It was described then as "something celebrated in the third ward". Naturally the alphabet people took an obscure thing and forced it nationally. Yesterday was the first time I heard someone deep in yankee land wish folks a "happy juneteenth" and it was met with a chorus of groans (heh!). I have mixed feelings about celebrating what we did as a country and a culture to end slavery. The problem with the liberal alphabet people is that every thing they do is intended as imperialistic finger in the eye. All these fake holidays and months can just die.
