Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ace of Spades Pet Thread, June 21![]() ![]() Last week we had one of those heart-wrenching experiences that no one should ever have. When we woke up on Friday morning we could not find our youngest cat, Misty, anywhere. We searched the house, the yard, checked under and in the shed, walked the grounds around the fenced area endlessly, even walked along a nearby wash. Misty was nowhere. We immediately passed out notices to all our neighbors as well as listed her as missing on a number of websites that specialize in listing unidentified found pets. All to no avail. As of today there is still no evidence of her anywhere. We have mostly decided that a predator of some kind, a coyote or large bird, somehow got into the yard (protected by a very high fence) and snatched her. She was only two and a half years old. Her loss is quite painful. What makes it worse is that she was undoubtedly the happiest cat I have ever known. We originally got her as a kitten in 2022 to be a companion for our other cat, Molly, as well as for ourselves. We had adopted Molly and Emma together in 2013, but Emma had died prematurely in 2021 from kidney failure. We found Molly pining for companionship, and thus went out to find her a kitten. ![]() ![]() Some cats can be timid. Some can be bossy. Some can be hostile. Some cats, like Molly, are contented and nice, always willing to hang out near us but not be very creative or active, with eating, sleeping, and getting brushed her only real interests. Misty however was always happy, and eager to tell everyone that’s how she felt. For almost three years she brought this joy to us, as well as to herself. For that we are grateful. It is tragic beyond words that she could not do so for many more years. Please consider yourself and your family (including pets) to be special members of the PetMoron family, Bob. We mourn you loss of Misty. Stay in touch. We have gotten a real sense of how special Misty was. Thank you. Hi KT: Long-time semi-Lurker Lisan here. Here are pictures of Billy the Dog, an Australian Kelpie mix; Bella, the Tortie cat; and Sophia, a very ancient Tabby. I brought all three animals home after my aunt passed away and no one could take them. Originally, I was taking only the two cats, but Plan A for the dog fell through and I was Plan B. Since Billy is a very good dog, and especially good around cats, it wasn’t stretch to include him as part of the pet horde. He is the most well-behaved dog-polite, good on a leash and incredibly, he never barks. The puzzle with him is that he has none of the herding dog breed characteristics, and while he looks like he has some husky or malamute in him, he doesn’t act like it. Will just be thankful he is such a well-behaved little guy, and do a DNA test at some point to confirm his breed. Bella is about 14 years old, she was exclusively an outdoor cat, but not feral. She is adapting well to being indoor only, meaning she isn’t complaining with howling cat noise or violence. She is actually a quiet cat, very amenable to being handled and petted-I think she is secretly happy to be warm and safe inside. We are letting her set the pace for ratcheting down her flight response, and she is slowly exploring beyond the safe places she has picked in the house. Sophia is confirmed at 22 years old, which is the oldest cat I have ever had. Apparently, she was also an outdoor only cat, brought inside to die when she began to look frail—this was an unknown number of years ago, and she is still hanging on. She is creaky, cranky, and old-thin, but moves around well from nap spot to nap spot, almost trotting when food is on offer. We are treating her for the typical old cat problems, namely hyperthyroidism (medicated), kidney failure (subQ fluids), with her diabetes testing still inconclusive. I know she is on borrowed time but I am terribly happy we could give her a final landing place that is peaceful and quiet and safe. Thanks for all you do for the Ace of Spades weekend edition. Lisan ![]() ![]() Let me introduce to the newest member of our family. This is a baby green cheek conure. He/she hatched on Father’s Day morning. As you can see, there will be more siblings in the coming days. He will get his first feeding this evening and moved into a brooding box tomorrow. I’ll try to send more images as they grow. ![]() ![]() Encountered by Members of The Horde ![]() Thank you for sharing your pets with us. Roadrunner! Cool bird. When I was a kid I went with my family out to West Texas. Saw the roadrunners. And they do run up and down the roads. I think their favorite food is lizards. Kinda crazy birds but they know what their doing.

My brother bought his parrots from a breeder that raised the babies. The only exception was when they had three clutches arrive at the same time and had to leave it to the mother with one of them.
They had the most lovable Hyacinth who thought people were wonderful because they gave him attention. Posted by: NR Pax at June 21, 2025 03:41 PM (7xrfc) 9
Tree branches moving. Wind? No, squirrel. Well, if the tree across the street is moving it's windy? No, squirrels there too.
Do spiders count as pets? Haven't broomed them out yet. It's like Wild Kingdom when they dash to eat a fly. One has six corpses in it's web. Neighbors puppy finally has a name: Nova. Meh, I'm still calling her little girl. Man, she is solid! Going to be a big blue heeler. My mom has two cats reach 24 … at the same time. She couldn’t be sure of the ages, because they were rescues, but she had one for 18 years and another for 20 years, and both were mature when they arrived, so they were certainly very old felines.
They died within a few weeks of each other. And in exactly the same way. They went to sleep as per usual, and never woke up. Mom had another cat reach 21, almost 22. Must be something in the water here. Posted by: Elric the Bladiest Blade at June 21, 2025 03:45 PM (aeiyZ) 12

That top photo and caption made me laugh. When we adopted Precious the Bichon almost two years ago, she was listed as deaf. Turns out she wasn't hard of hearing, just hard of listening. She can certainly hear the soft sound of unwrapping a Kraft cheese single which, in her considered opinion, is the pinnacle of haute cuisine.

I went to read Zimmermann's story about Misty the happiest cat. A tragedy that she didn't get to live out a full life. (Though it's only been, what, two weeks now? Cats have been known to go missing for years, and then return.)
My Happiest Cat was clearly Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat. She was rescued from a park in the French Quarter, we were told, and became Linda's first cat. After a day or so, Marie adjusted, learned her new name or any part of it, and set off on a lifelong adventure to see and do what she could see and do. She was always pleased to have new people come over ("Ah! Someone new to worship me!"), loved to play with toys and with human objects like earrings and jewelry, and loved to have other cats with her. When I introduced her to the harness and lead later in her life, she eagerly took to walking with us, leading us with her tail in the air. She lived to be about fourteen. All too short a season. I have a story, and a couple of pics, about a Moron-adjacent animal I can send.
Stirling and Dagny, the Killer Kittenz From Outer Space, are doing well. Stirling was on my lap just now, though he's doing it less often as he grows up. (Still milk-treads, though.) Dagny, well, I have had to adjust to the fact she'll never be a lap cat, and just enjoy her company when she chooses to be near me. Posted by: Commissar of plenty and festive little hats at June 21, 2025 *** My boyhood cat, Rusty the big red tabby, vanished one day from the house and patio. We searched everywhere for him -- and he was terrified of strangers, so he would not willingly have gone out the gate onto the street, even if he'd had the chance. We walked all around the area, calling him, hoping against hope that he hadn't been run over. Three days later he was at the kitchen door, squeaking piteously for food. We guessed that he'd been startled into running into the back door of the shop that opened on our patio, or crept in to explore, then been too frightened or confused to leave until someone left the door open once more. He never vanished again. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 21, 2025 04:01 PM (omVj0) 25

Stories like these are why my cats are indoor-only. I don't trust other inhabitants of my apartment complex, and I certainly don't trust that they'd avoid an animal when driving their ratty or neglected cars.

Wolfus,
We tried to keep them inside only but 2 of them were rescued from outside situations so they always wanted out and would escape when letting the dog out or when opening the front door. After a while we gave up trying to keep them in 100%. Posted by: lin-duh at June 21, 2025 04:10 PM (YobFY) 31

On my walk I met a guy from the Humane Society walking a young dog. He said this was her first time out of the shelter and she was nervous and unsure.
I petted her and she sat next to me and leaned against my leg. It's great when you're nice to a dog and they decide you've earned their trust. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at June 21, 2025 04:11 PM (CHHv1) 33
Aside from Marie, I'd like to think all my cats have been happy in their indoor lives. Wolf, the big shaggy black cat whom I adopted after his worthless humans left him behind, more than once strolled outside and simply sprawled on the walkway, then trotted back when I called him. Clearly he liked his indoor life. Tatiana the Wonder Siberian loved to play with her toys, including our "bring it back" game when I threw the small ball for her and she would race after it and return with it in her jaws for me to throw again.

Posted by: Mike Hunt at June 21, 2025 *** My cats are that way about the water from the tap. If I walk into the bathroom, one or both of them flies in after me and sits on the edge of the sink. Busy early part of the week. Time for the Summer Death March. Her Majesty returns this afternoon from picking Varus up to be our guest. Monday, Puff and Ruth get baths and the RV gets loaded. Tuesday, we take four dogs (Puff, Ruth, Dot and Dan) to Texas A&M for heart tests as part of a study there. On returning, the crates are removed from the front and Varus and Rosalind go up to Oklahoma City for five days, then come down to Dallas for three. So HM is away for two weeks. Then it's San Antonio the next weekend, then Houston the week after that, then Longview the week after that. Busy July. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 21, 2025 04:21 PM (QnmlO) 39

My current cat went missing for a couple of months when she was young. She's always been a strictly indoor cat, but she sure wanted to get those birds she could see through the window. She'd be plastered to the glass any time there were birds in the yard and would try to make a break for it any time the door was open.
One day she succeeded and apparently got lost. I thought she was gone for good until one day there was a knock on the door. Turns out she'd been taken in by a very nice couple who took good care of her until their landlord got wind of it (they weren't allowed to have pets). Very sadly, they took her to the Humane Society. The Humane Society scanned her, found the chip, and told them where she belonged, so they they insisted on returning her in person. They wouldn't take any reward, not even to cover the cost of cat food. Thank God she had a chip. Since then, she's never tried to get out the door even once, no matter how many tasty-looking birds are in the yard.
