Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - June 24, 2025 [scampydog]

H N Barn.JPG

Good evening and thank you for checking in on the Tuesday, ONT. Summer is here - funny tan lines, green grass, grilling, lemonade, and warm nights. Open thread - abstract concepts, cautionary tales, and a verbal shiv or two are encouraged.

Who can craft an impressively long run-on sentence in response to the question below? Ramble on.

Long Lines Building. Known today simply by its address, 33 Thomas Street. I was today years old when I discovered this 45-story, windowless, brutalistic building.

Computers at Titanpointe have monitored international phone calls, faxes and voice calls routed over the internet, and more, hoovering up data from the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and U.S. allies including France, Germany, and Japan. 6 33 Thomas Street, it turns out, is exactly what it looks like: an apocalypse-proof above-ground bunker intended not only to symbolize but to guarantee national security. For those overseeing fortress operations at the time of construction, objects of fear were nuclear-armed Communists abroad and a restive youth population at home, who couldn't be trusted to obey the diktats of a culture that had raised up some in previously inconceivable affluence; an affluence built on the exploitation and disenfranchisement of people near and far.

By the time the NSA took over, targets were likely to be insurgents rejecting liberal democracy and American hegemony, from Islamic fundamentalists to world-market competitors in China, alongside a smattering of Black Lives Matter activists. For those outside the fortress, in the Nixon era as in the present, the fearful issue was an entrenched and unaccountable fusion of corporate and governmental capability, a power that flipped the switches connecting the world. At the same time, popular culture had begun, in the 1970s, to register a paranoia that has only intensified - the fear that people no longer call the shots. In its monumental implacability, Titanpointe seems to herald a posthuman regime, run by algorithm for the sole purpose of perpetuating its own system.

It is, in other words, a building tailor made for spy movies.

Got a quote you like - even if it came from someone you don't particularly care for?

"People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them." George Bernard Shaw

Historical happenings in June.

1984 6-21.jpg

Eurythmics Mystery Click

76 years since Orwell published 1984, (June 8, 1949) a warning about totalitarianism, manipulation, surveillance, propaganda, power, strength, weakness, fear, active distortion of truth through censorship, and word bending. Still relevant and at times reading less like a work of fiction.

It's fascinating to read the various views and interpretations of 1984. Linking Asimov - simply because of curiosity - liberal, a Russian, a commie (allegedly), and his view/review of the book. There is value in understanding the flawed ideology of the other side. Asimov's review was comfortably framed in his worldview/biases/assumptions vs. a political allegory or political horror warning.

Heh. Holding quirky traditions and rituals together. Wouldn't change a thing - long arc.

US Open (golf) wrapped up a week ago. It was held at Oakmont CC, outside of Pittsburgh. They have quite the tradition there - a regular money game.

The SWAT is played every Wednesday, Friday, weekends and holidays. Oakmont Country Club has a detailed record of every SWAT game dating back to 1955. Those records are handwritten after each match and stored in the men's SWAT Room. Each year has its own SWAT book, which is stored in a case in the SWAT room. The members arrive and are given their teams, they go out and play and then return to the SWAT room to commiserate and record the day's game.

True? I'm always a bit of a skeptic with "recently found" items, but this one kept me reading. Take a look at the link.

Lady Liberty May 25.JPG

Last minute updates to the drawings of the Statue of Liberty?

Ruderman's purchase was supposed to be blueprint copies related to the statue's construction. But little did he know that the folder would also contain never-before-seen original sketches of the statue's construction, revealing late changes that had been made to its structural design.

This ONT is brought to you by: The A-10 Pilots Coloring Book. Best link I clicked on all week.

Just like many tanks of the era, the rear of the T-62 is one of its most vulnerable spots, from many, many angles and ranges. Despite including an anal sex reference, this Air Force instruction manual is really helpful in determining just where the best place to hit the main battle tank is. Even if the GAU-8 can't penetrate the crew through the back door, it can still hit the engine and drive gear, shutting down the tank's advance.

Yeah, I know that it's only the primary, but with Mamdani winning the Democratic nomination, he is the odds-on favorite to win the general election.

And Mamdani is winning because "educated" New Yorkers are heavily voting for him.

I like it,
But Orwell and Huxley are both correct on certain aspects.

Orwell was right about changing language for political purposes, cancel culture, surveillance, distorting/rewriting history, pervasive propaganda and Two Minutes Hate.

Huxley was right about distracting entertainment, cultural debauchery, drugs (legal & illegal), technocracy, regimented classes/sexes, and becoming a slave to system based on rewarding pleasure and minimizing pain.

I’ve thought for a long time that we’re living through the formation of a combination of their visions of dystopia.

As in, delete from Earth that which would make Earth better.

We already have the cheat code: The Devil, The Beast, the False Prophet, Death, Hades and anyone not found in the Book of Life are tossed into the Lake of Fire.

This is part of the New Heavens and New Earth, which is supposed to be absent elements of The Curse.

It would make Earth better. What it does for you spiritually is not addressed in the Challenge.

The last time this happened, at a colloquy in Bandol in April 2020, I was rather alarmed by the vehemence of the young man who was lecturing me outside the lecture hall on my scandalous refusal to admit the theft [...]

Consequently, the system of oppression by two-way television simply will not work.

Yeah, now that I think about that Hispanic gay bar down the block (which used to be a white bar). That just tells you the changes in demographics in the neighborhood. Originally, way back in the late 60sw/early '70s, the neighborhood was the first 'garden apartment' neighborhood and was considered one of the first 'gay' neighborhoods. Back then it was German/Jewish/Irish and, being a short commute to the City, popular with the Manhattan working crowd, too. Now it's pick a Central/South American country. This was the first year I don't remember any official Hispanic country parades in my neighborhood as in past summers, like the Ecuadorian one or the Bolivian one; we didn't have just Mexicans.

211 The English title of À la recherche du temps perdu is rendered as Remembrance of Things Past, but is literally In Search of Lost Time, and is mostly about involuntary memory. The most famous example is the “madeleine episode” which occurs early on in the first volume (of seven). In it the person telling the tale, presumably Marcel Proust himself, eats a madeleine dunked in his tea and remembers a whole episode from his childhood: it is delightfully told, but Proust can not seem to find a place to end his sentences and could apparently write the whole book without the need for a single period (he does end his sentences, but only after several pages)!

A vehicle carrier transporting hundreds of Chinese electric vehicles (EV) sank in the Pacific Ocean after catching fire, fueling renewed concerns about the hazard associated with EV batteries, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The Morning Midas was carrying approximately 3,000 cars, including around 800 EVs, most of which were manufactured in China, according to the WSJ. While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, lithium-ion batteries used in many EVs are known to be highly flammable, and have been linked to similar maritime incidents in the past.

The ship had been drifting in the ocean after a fire broke out on June 3, prompting the crew to abandon the vessel. At the time of the incident, the vessel was en route to Mexico.

302 Of course, although the narrator of À la recherche du temps perdu is obviously Proust, the memories are obviously from his childhood, and so forth, the novelist goes on to create a whole world where the protagonist can’t be Proust since he had no such relatives nor did he have those particular experiences, happy or sad, exultant or sordid. Or did he?

70s era crime was mostly small scale and independent. Osama Bin Lenin is about to open the city coffers to the elites of NYC's organized crime scene.

And this isn't because he's some naive fool that doesn't know what will happen...he knows exactly what he is doing.

So honestly this is going to be more like one of those Superfriends episodes where the criminal element takes over Gotham then anything from the 70s. Only it will be real. And spectacular.

It’s not much of a secret. All of the BLM riots in the northeast (at least) were funded by tech billionaire Neville Roy Singham, husband of the founder of Code Pink, and who used to live in New York but now has set up residence in Shanghai, under Xi’s protection.
All of his money has always been sourced from China, and no doubt that’s who was “encouraging” him to push the BLM chaos hard.

Didn't move here 'til the early '80s. Visited while in college during Thanksgiving week in '75. Not for the parade but a dormmate lived on 10 St. just off 5th Ave.; he helped pay for gas/tolls. Had a free room for the weekend and then off to Yonkers. That's another story. The second time in '79. Looking back, the thing I remember about that '75 visit is that is looked like every cop tv show/movie. 'The French Connection' was only a few years old. 'Death Wish' was a hit; I was here for the real version, Bernie Goetz shooting those 4 on the subway in '84. TBH, it only got better with Giuliani, although in restrospect Koch was a decent mayor, too. Only with Bloomberg did the mayoral decline begin. Then came Big Bird. Adams was a clown at first but switched up on the illegal issue because he knew the City is going broke. Then the DOJ started investigating him. He's a helluva lot better than ObL.

But between Adams, Cuomo and Sliwa, the sane vote is split three ways. That's a guaranteed loser for all three -- and the City -- in the General.

Posted by: RickZ at June 25, 2025 12:21 AM (gKDq2)

344 If Cuomo runs, that's a three-way split of the centrist (for this City) vote, ensuring Osama bin Lenin* will win.

Posted by: RickZ at June 25, 2025 12:00 AM (gKDq2)

Well I think it's nice that the three centrist NY voters get their very own candidate. Frankly, if they all met at the Duane Reade, they barely fill the antacid aisle.

The real reason why Blue cities elect the worst candidate is the abysmal voter turnout. IIRC, less than 10% of eligible voters showed up when Karen Bass became Los Angeles's latest nightmare mayor. The problem isn't ones participating in the process...

Posted by: Joe Kidd at June 25, 2025 12:21 AM (bA75n)

345 I was cracking wise, but really, eliminating the Board of Estimate was basically the city-level version of eliminating the Electoral College.

"But why does little Staten Island get the same vote as enormous Brooklyn," they cried, and they got an imperial mayor for their troubles. And they loved it when that mayor was a Giuliani.

Enjoy it now, New York. You beat the brakes off a rugged old system in favor of the will of the people. And now you'll get the will of the people good and hard.

Ciao!

Posted by: RickZ at June 25, 2025 12:28 AM (gKDq2)

351 Looks like there were 2.8M votes in the presidential election and about 1M in the Dem primary for mayor. Presumably some number of people vote in the R primary as well, but I'm going to guess less then half of the D numbers.

So...perhaps 1/2 to 1/3 of the general election voters voted in the mayor race? I guess the rest took Althouse's advice and didn't vote because it was too hot.

Or, maybe, no one was paying for fake votes this time around...

352 We have enough coal in proven reserves to last 500 years at current usage levels. We are finding more and more oil, and coming up with more ways to get it out at a profit, that we probably don’t really need nuclear power yet (but I won’t turn it down - Plant Vogtle just put a new reactor online). Really, on the energy home front, the USA is setting pretty and smelling like roses! So much so they have to put up hoaxes like global warming to try to scare us out of using all the bounty God has given us! Cheer up! In the long run, we win, and they lose! Smile and confuse them!

Back when power fell the Bolsheviks in the Russian revolution a nasty civil war began. The Bolsheviks gradually eliminated all of their leftist opponents all the while the Whites(non Reds) couldn't form a united front because none would say what they believed in. The Whites were picked off one by one. If Cuomo , Adams and Sliwa can't find common ground and get behind one of them, Bolshevik Mamdani will win and then truly all hell will break loose. Most will say eff NYC, but this will reverberate across every leftist city and state and the rest of the country as well.

AOC won the Democrat primary in '18, upsetting Pelosi's # 2 Joe Crowley. That was a BIG deal. She won with 57%-42% but with only 16,900 to 12,900 actual votes. That's peanuts for a Congressional district in a very blue city. Each CD representsa about 761,000 people (not necessarily all voters), But still. Nobody votes in the primaries. I don't know why. Same goes for any off-year election. Our mayoral is this year, '25. The gubernatorial election is next year, another off year election. And by off year, I mean a presidential election. Even the off year Congressional elections get less vote numbers. When only mayoral elections are on the ballot, they get even fewer voters. I believe by design. The Dems plan on apathy. And they'd be right.

367 Honestly, I'm surprised that opponents of the EC haven't sued the federal government, citing BoE v. Morris. The Supreme Court decided 9-0 that the BoE was a violation of the 14th Amendment and scrapped it, even though the FedGov has no jurisdiction in state and local electoral rules.

I would argue that the Supreme Court has *more* authority to claim that the Equal Protection clause overrides Article II than it does claiming it overrides NYC's BoE.

Both arguments are horseshit, of course. But the second one is slightly less horseshitty.

I agree with this, 100 percent, but I must also say that Gaza should have been a 500 foot deep, smoking crater by October 14th, 2023. Atlas's collapse became more inevitable the longer Gaza and every person in it remained standing.

Jews/Israelis are too kind, decent, compassionate. Their stance on hostages needs adjusting. As tragic as it would have been, 300 or so hostages in exchange for the complete annihilation of Gaza, the West Bank and the Hamas filth would have been worth it, in my opinion.

444 Interesting reading today: someone’s comment the other day about whether we had a third fission bomb ready to use after Hiroshima and Nagasaki (yes, we did: it was never used, but we had assembly lines set up to make more fission bombs which we proceeded to build) led me to wonder about the British nuclear weapons. The UK had been an equal partner in the Manhattan District Project (so named to fool the enemy), but by 1946 they had been cut off from technical collaboration on nuclear weapons. So they weren’t in on the work by Teller and Ulam to develop the “Super” bomb - what we now call an H-bomb, or fusion bomb. Britain went on to develop its own fission bomb, the Blue Danube design which they tested in 1952 at the Montebello Islands off Western Australia. The Red Beard fission bomb replaced the Blue Danube design by 1962. Although the UK developed fission bombs with large explosive yields, comparable to a smaller yield fusion bomb, they never actually cracked the Ulam/Teller design for the H-bomb. They pretended they had done so all through the Cold War! It was only after 1989 that the truth came out: Britain never did have the H-bomb!

456 Biden's Dog there are many who's first (perhaps not only) reaction to the ceasefire was "huh?". Do not know/may never know exactly what happened here, I mean conversations between Trump and Bibi. But that's how this was done, that much can be assumed.

Israeli leadership had already, more than once, said they were achieving most of their original objectives, and faster/more effectively than anticipated. And regime change of course was never on the menu - being beyond Israel's capacity. And if ever I would guess there was a need for an operational pause, this would be it. The nature and tempo of IAF operations was amazing - but thereby probably unsustainable.

Anyway those are all the practical possible considerations. The gist of that linked article is just common sense, but common sense that is resisted or missed by most. IDF chief Zamir's war summary stressed how unfinished the job was. Reality is possibly worse of course - the job could grow even bigger. Here's to hoping the Iranian regime dissolves.
