Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Anderson Cooper Hires New "Super Agent" As CNN Gets Ready to Can Its Expensive Ratings-Poison Anti-TalentFor the first time ever, more people are watching TV via internet streaming than are watching TV through broadcast or cable, combined. More Americans are watching TV via streaming platforms than both broadcast and cable combined for the first time ever. The finding comes from Nielson's monthly Gauge report, which was launched four years ago to provide insight on what viewers are watching, as well as how they are watching it. The latest report found that streaming accounted for 44.8% of total TV viewership in May--the largest share on record. Meanwhile, broadcast and cable TV only made up 20.1% and 24.1%, respectively, for a total of 44.2%. ... Previously, the Gauge reported another big milestone for streaming platforms. In July 2022, for the first time, streaming topped cable viewership. At the time, it accounted for 34.8% of viewership while cable made up 34.4%. Broadcast made up 21.6%. However today, the combined total for both cable and broadcast viewing still falls behind the percentage of monthly streamers. So everyone knows the cable channels and broadcast networks are dying, and dying quickly. Every year from now forward, they will see big yearly declines in viewership. The broadcast channels will probably survive, diminished but still in business, as they just shift over to streaming. But the cable channels? With everyone cutting the cord, they can no longer depend on all those forced fees from consumers for a hundred channels they never, ever watch. I cut mine when I got sick of paying for ESPN, which I never watch, but takes something like one third of your cable bill payment. And the idea that I was paying for CNN and MSNBC -- and Fox, too -- just cinched it. To hell with these channels. I'm not paying $100 a month just because every once in a while I watch Dual Survivor or Reno 911. You might know that Warner-Discovery is in deep debt it can't get out of -- $40 billion in fact. Warner-Discovery is taking all of the companies that might actually be profitable one day -- its streaming services and its movie studio -- and keeping them. All the basket-case cable channels will be put into a new company called Global Networks. This company will contain the dying CNN and other POS channels, and will also be filled with, get this, most of Warner-Discovery's $40 billion in debt. I guess they'll try to sell this Lehman Bros. tranche of sub-sub-sub-subprime properties to some sucker out there. But who's going to buy expensive, dying cable channels while also assuming the huge amount of debt? It might be one of those free sales -- if you take on the debt, you can have these dying channels for free. But... that's not free. That's taking on billions in debt to own dying channels. Warner-Discovery is in such dire straits that even its CEO is taking a huge paycut. CEOs do not take paycuts. Except if the company is in real trouble, and they have to cut everything, even their own pay. Physical Media ForeverWith that background, you now appreciate why Vanderbilt-fortune nepo-baby and Deep State catspaw Anderson Cooper, is suddenly seeking new representation. If Zazlav is cutting his own salary from $22 million to $6 million, what are the odds that Anderson Cooper gets to keep his $18 million? Before you answer: The guy they've put in charge of the Basket of Deplorables cable channels is known in the industry as a slash-and-burn hatchet man that you bring in to fire lots of people to keep a company from bankruptcy. Coincidentally enough. You know why I think he's taking a paycut? So he can turn to people like Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper and demand they take a paycut, too. A dark cloud hangs over CNN headquarters as staffers brace for layoffs and a likely sale of the network amid another reshuffling by its parents company. 'I'd say the mood remains really grim,' a CNN employee told Fox News, in the wake of last week's restructuring announcement from Warner Bros. Discovery. 'People are uncertain.' Meanwhile, CNN mainstay Anderson Cooper just signed with a new talent agency for the first time in decades - a move Variety reported was is a surefire sign he is open to new opportunities.LOL. "He's open to new opportunities." Sure. Another guy who's just itching to get into this Podcast Game that everyone's talking about! I can't wait to see the semen-hued Nepo Baby read ads for Squarspace, Fum, and Factor. ... The staffer added: 'I think they've telegraphed clearly that more cuts are coming.' The insider noted that Wiedenfels' 'remit is not to grow stuff.' 'This company is a cash-flow giant with shrinking revenue. Like that's the deal,' the source said. 'It's merely a matter of how fast it shrinks. That's why the assets were split.' Wiedenfels has already managed to reduce WBD's $55billion debt by $21 billion in less than two years. His appointment by WBC CEO David Zaslav comes after several rounds of layoffs at his behest. Less than five months ago, CNN laid off 200 staffers - all from its struggling TV division. WBD has engaged in repeated rounds as well. A staffer told the Daily Mail at the time of the most recent CNN firings that the network had become 'bloated' after Warner Bros.' merger with Discovery in 2021. 'And we don't have streaming yet so - it's hard to imagine it doesn't get worse,' the CNN source further told Fox, referring to an anticipated portion of CNN CEO Mark Thompson's long-in-the works restructuring plan. ... 'Zaslav killed this place. He killed it,' the source said. 'The last few years under Zas has been a disaster in terms of what he has done,' the person added. ... A third staffer who spoke to Fox also appeared to believe a collapse at CNN is imminent. 'I'm trying to figure out what I'll do next when the whole thing collapses, but I don't even know when that will be,' the source said.Cry moar. This Fox News report mentions that the Basket of Deplorable Channels company will be saddled with the bulk of Warner-Discovery's massive debt. It also says: Industry critics like Puck correspondent Dylan Byers have predicted doom and gloom for the future of CNN, suggesting it will meet the fate of HLN, which he has noted "no longer exists." I sure hope Andrew Breitbart is looking down and laughing in a not-approved-by-God kind of way. Via WDW_Pro. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Warner Bros. Discovery is cutting CEO David Zaslav's pay after shareholder backlash
-Salary from $22M to $6M -Stock bonus target will shrink from $23.5M to $7.5M per year - The takeaway here is the understanding of how meaningless this job is. He can take that level of pay cut and stay on because he knows he's still not really accountable for anything. He's just a figurehead to be fired when things get bad enough. The cash is payment for connections and public humiliation. Posted by: Boron Cobbie - If you don't have a man to blame, one will be provided for you. at June 19, 2025 12:30 PM (C3KJ+) 9

The entire American "cultural products" industry is collapsing. This includes TV, film, traditional news media, sci-f/fantasy publishing, comic books, and "Triple A" (big budget) video games.
We've already seen comic books be almost totally replaced by manga. Traditional media is largely being replaced by YouTube and smaller streaming channels catering to specific audiences. If you're questioning why China wants to keep the U.S. out of Iran, the answer isn't some idealistic pursuit of global peace or that China is anti-globalist. China buys 91% of Iran's oil exports. Iran, in turn, supplies 13% of China’s total crude imports. Disruption means China loses a steady, discounted oil supply. That's it. Ace, the separation deal is more complicated than this.
First off, both companies -- the streaming/studio side and the "Global Networks" -- will be publicly-traded companies. Global will own 20% of the new streaming company, so it's not a total separation. I think that 20% is designed to be sold off or monetized to pay off Global's debt. Global isn't just the dimestore dogshit products like CNN. It also includes Discovery+ and other TV brands. Global will be publicly-traded, so it has to have some value or nobody will buy the stock. Before the separation, the company will take out another $17.5B in debt. I'm not sure how the company expects to pay that back, given that it's already drowning in debt. A transgender influencer started pointing fingers at other members of the community regarding the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling Wednesday, which upheld Tennessee’s law banning child sex change procedures. “This non-binary, self-ID nonsense is the legal basis for SCOTUS dismantling transsexual rights today. And the logic makes perfect sense,” Brianna Wu said. “Gender ideology is deadly to actual transsexuals. We have to make it clear we have nothing to do with their bizarre jihad on the concept of gender itself. You’ve tossed sex perverts the keys to the women’s bathroom, laughed off concerns that parents have about their children being sexualized and have turned my medical condition into a joke.” https://tinyurl.com/ytccbd3 Posted by: Elric Blade at June 19, 2025 12:49 PM (iFTx/) Posted by: Scott at June 19, 2025 12:49 PM (1eYMX) 144

I met a woman at an event who worked for the Discovery Channel. Back in the blue collar/redneck reality show heyday, when those shows were money makers for the cable channels, and Duck Dynasty was king.
She despised all of it. She felt it was so beneath then to provide to the masses, her own employer. I'm positive she wasn't the only one who worked there who felt that way. Like it was a weird carnival show act that beat out the highbrow stuff, and they couldn't get over it. When you hate the audience that keeps the lights on, it always turns into trouble. By the way, I hear there's going to be a Dick Dynasty reboot, I hope it does well. This is a good time for it. Posted by: LizLem at June 19, 2025 12:55 PM (54iBb) 181

It might actually be interesting for cable operators to start contracting with podcasters to air their content through traditional delivery methods.
Why not a cable package with a single channel of conservative podcasters, a cable channel of leftist podcasters, sports podcasters, etc, etc, and hanging on to the live-streaming items like live sports? No production costs, on air talent is probably a lot cheaper, distribution model already exists, and you could work in some local stuff based on zip code including local news. Web3 is still being built.
It's largely dismissed by the big money because it's tied into crypto. But, it monetizes viewer interaction and the content, it's becoming a collaboration where the viewer and the creator both become the creators of the content. Think of it as here, Ace getting paid the more people comment, people paying to have their post promoted, Ace pulling comments into the main posts, that then generates more engagement, more content, more revenue, all which each increase the other, and the platform pushes the post out to more viewers. Where are the young people going instead? Or are they just not into politics that much? younger people are more on Reddit, in discord groups (I have a very active mom group that discusses politics a lot there), and they listen to a lot of podcasts for political talk. I read somewhere that the No Kings protesters were disproportionately Boomer. I'm worried about whether some of the younger generations are too addicted to their phones, or perhaps too traumatized, or whatever, to be as politically active as others. The Boomers were extremely active in their youth, but the threat of the draft was a powerful motivator. You can't block commercial ads, but you can regulate them fairly strictly to ensure they're truthful and not misleading. You’d think Cooper, as heir to the Vanderbilt fortune, wouldn’t have to worry about a job. When mummy Gloria Vanderbilt died, people speculated she might have been worth $200 million. Instead, her son Cooper, heir to the bulk of her fortune only received ~$1.5 million. Now some people could live on that: 5% (which you could reasonably expect to tap without unduly endangering the principal) of $1.5 million is $75,000. But you can’t live in style in a major city on just that, and who wants to live a frugal life in the boonies? So Anderson must keep plugging away. I wonder if he has saved or invested any of his extravagant salary?

263 Gonna be tough to ban pharma ads, since a supreme court ruling decided it was violating free speech to block them from broadcast. I think that's a hilariously bad ruling, but that's where it stands right now
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at June 19, 2025 01:00 PM (e7kz6) _______ True, but the whole "commercial speech" legal arena is a mess. You can't block commercial ads, but you can regulate them fairly strictly to ensure they're truthful and not misleading. In the case of pharma ads, I think they're almost inherently misleading, in a way that's materially different from a beer commercial where it shows average guys drinking beer with supermodel-quality babes. 'Zaslav killed this place. He killed it,' the source said.
'The last few years under Zas has been a disaster in terms of what he has done,' the person added. Are these the same people who led a revolt against the last guy WBD put in charge of CNN? That was the guy that fired Stelter, and tried to bring CNN back to the middle, but kept Acosta, Tapper, and Cooper around. They all cried for months until that guy was forced out, and now they're doing it again with this guy, who gave them Tater back, but had to get rid of the dead weight known as Acosta. Obviously the inmates are still running the asylum at CNN and it's never going to get any better until they fire these Dem cultists who've ruined every news agency they attach themselves to over the last 25 years. Fire every producer, reporter, and anchor there now and hire people who can be objective and report the news as fairly & truthfully as possible and then they might have a chance in the future. Anything short of that just isn't going to get the job done. But if they do that, their demented audience will leave in droves and they'll be just as screwed as they are now. There is a deep well documented video on GM’s problems that will come to a head in 2027. Essentially they sold out their global markets to SAIC (Chinese) and gave away their engineering and technology development to them to a very large degree.
In 2027 the agreement between the two companies comes to an end and GM is going to have to make the decision to go bankrupt or just slap their brands on Chinese vehicles. Posted by: MAGA_Ken at June 19, 2025 01:11 PM (tn3dm) 286

Breaking news: Disney World is experiencing the lowest June attendance in a decade.
Posted by: Duncanthrax at June 19, 2025 01:05 PM More via Grok: Disney World’s low June 2025 attendance stands out compared to competitors, likely due to its premium pricing and guest frustration with added costs (e.g., Lightning Lane, up to $25/ride). Universal Orlando benefits most from Disney’s dip, with Epic Universe pulling crowds. Other Orlando parks (SeaWorld, Busch Gardens) hold steady but don’t see major spikes. Non-Florida parks (Disneyland, Cedar Point, Six Flags) show typical summer crowds, unaffected by Disney World’s specific challenges. Heat, school schedules, and economic pressures (inflation, travel costs) impact all parks, but Disney’s higher cost structure amplifies guest pushback. https://bit.ly/45wYrC6 Posted by: Clyde Shelton at June 19, 2025 01:14 PM (P5BPp) 300

Companies like Westgate Resorts, Holiday Inn Club Vacations, and Marriott Vacation Club offer promotions where you attend a 90-120 minute sales pitch in exchange for incentives, which can include Disney World tickets, Universal Orlando tickets, or gift cards (e.g., $200 Visa card) usable for park tickets. There is no Vanderbilt fortune, at least for Anderson Cooper. His mother left an estate of $3 million. He got half and his brother Stan Stokowski got half. Brother Christopher Stokowski received nothing and apparently wanted nothing. (Leopold Stokowski's estate one presumes was apportioned among his five children; Wyatt Cooper did not come from money).
== I actually don't think Gloria Vanderbilt's connections had much to do with Cooper's career. She was a figure in the world of art and design, not media. == Cooper's a disappointment because he entered journalism (in his case starting as a freelancer in 3d world locales) at a time when the media was biased but not an extension of the Democratic Party / sorosphere noise machine. He didn't have the integrity to tell Jeff Zucker to get stuffed. Posted by: Art Deco at June 19, 2025 01:49 PM (2TXH9) 441
There's a mess of cable channels I'd like to see survive: C-SPAN, Turner Classic Movies, Investigation Discovery, EWTN. Our local PBS station has some agreeable programming. (The British detective serials which used to be a PBS specialty are now generally available via streaming services). PBS public affairs programming, once somewhat variegated, is now a component of the sorosphere / DNC noise machine.

Here is a question - in what world was Anderson Cooper worth $18 million? Sure, when the channel is gushing profits, sure. But now?

I read a fascinating article at CNBC (I think it was), which examined the financial situation of all the third generation Vanderbilt heirs. Bottom line: the third generation has toppled into the middle income group. They and their parents didn't preserve their wealth for the next generation. I believe, based on my own casual reading, that this is generally true for third generation heirs. One Trusts and Estates attorney famously said, "The first generation accumulates; the second spends; the third destroys."
