G'morning Pixy.
Gaming handheld situation: Well if I were interested in one of these, I'd just wait then. (I'm not that interested though, I prefer using my desktop for gaming.) I'll let the others know this thread is live. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 18, 2025 04:30 AM (O7YUW) 2
"6G speed record shattered as Keysight and NTT achieve 280 Gbps with sub-terahertz frequencies"
The higher the frequency, the more "direct line of site" it has to be and the less well it handles obstacles to get around. I'll wait to see this in real world implementations before I get even remotely excited about those supposed speeds. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 18, 2025 04:34 AM (O7YUW) 3
I don't have the money for a handheld gaming gizmo. If I did, I'd get the Steam Deck, because you can (with the right 3d printed case and little keyboard) make it into an ersatz laptop.
I mean, it's not like we can really get a Sony Vaio P series any more... Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at June 18, 2025 04:34 AM (gHSfI) 4

For example, frequencies above 10 GHz are susceptible to rain fade. Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at June 18, 2025 04:38 AM (ynpvh) 6
6G: This unprecedented data speed was made possible by ensuring the signal transmitted was remarkably clean. Keysight's Vector Component Analyzer played the central role — built on the latest N524XB series PNA-X Microwave Network Analyzers, it enabled the use of spectral digital predistortion (DPD) to minimize distortion and optimize signal integrity to achieve the 280 Gbps record. The test used NTT’s indium phosphide-based J-band power amplifier, hitting 35 GBaud with 256-QAM modulation at 0 dBm output and +9.1 dBm saturated power.
I have no idea what any of this crap is. I am betting it means Verzion will be raising my bill though. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at June 18, 2025 04:39 AM (NXz8h) 7

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at June 18, 2025 05:27 AM (a1415) 32
Evening and morning, everybody! I see I missed a lot here yesterday on my epic trek to and from Jackson, MS. The trip was successful and fun, but more than three hours' driving up, and four hours back, was exhausting. I see I need to add at least an hour when I'm calculating trip time somewhere. If Gorgle says two hours from A to B, I should plan on three.
As for AU not having any major cities in the north: That's awfully close to the equator. Too hot! (I haven't watched the video yet, so I'm guessing with tongue firmly planted in cheek.) Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 18, 2025 05:27 AM (omVj0) 33

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 18, 2025 *** Morning, Fen, A run to a real brick-and-mortar tobacconist shop, The Country Squire. They sell pipes, cigars, name-brand tobaccos, and have a slew of their own blends. Plus the fun of a road trip. Which it was; but more than seven hours behind the wheel, even if most of it was at 70 mph and on decent highways, is pretty wearing for a nearly-29 guy like me. I went to bed an hour early last night and slept a whole seven hours. Remarkable. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 18, 2025 05:35 AM (omVj0) 40

So not even the shits in Lebanon are siding with Iran?
lol Posted by: Soothsayer at June 18, 2025 07:03 AM (P8+56) None of their proxies seem to be lifting a finger to help their master. It's like an old Greek or Japanese drama or something. Posted by: Warai-otoko is being topical! at June 18, 2025 07:05 AM (BcT2b) 95

The 5090 D is a nominally cut-down version of the RTX 5090.
The upcoming 5090 DD - yes, really - is an actually cut-down version. - I'm betting this is being done because people who would like to purchase an nvidia card in the US right now are looking at 25-50% markups, and this will allow them to sell a low-rent 5090 at the normal 32GB vram 5090's $2000 MSRP (even though it will probably actually sell at $2300 or so) and the people who snatch it up will not realize they're buying a hobbled 5090 made to manipulate them. Yemen is doing what it can. Figure no resupply of missiles, and their ports and airfields get smashed for every missile launched. So not a real help, just a distraction that yields lots of unwelcome attention. Posted by: NaCly Dog at June 18, 2025 07:08 AM (u82oZ) 103

I've got to figure there's a whole heck of a lot of diplomatic wangling behind the scenes to keep the greater Arab world from ganging up and going on a murder spree in Iran right now.

72 On one of her albums, Nancy Sinatra did a version of the song with Lee Hazelwood. HIs raunchy sort of voice made a good pairing with hers, I think.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 18, 2025 06:05 AM (omVj0) The album was called Nancy & Lee, from 1968, I think. There's also an odd song on that album called "Some Velvet Morning" which you should check out. Lets see, in the U.S. we have polar bears in Alaska, Brown bears and mountain lions out west, sharks in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, alligators in the South, and half our population is armed and half of them are crazy, and all kinds of poisonous snakes. Yet we are suppose to worry about Australia? Really?
