Sunday Overnight Open Thread - June 15, 2025 [Doof]

doof-dadinfield.jpg

Howdy Hordelings! Happy Father's Day to the dads out there. Did you get a call or visit today? If your dad is still among us, did you call him or visit him today? Those of us whose dads are no longer here, let's raise a glass to their memory. If you never had a good relationship with your dad, I hope you were able to celebrate and honor someone who is like a father to you.

Tonight's ONT features a lot of stuff to celebrate dads. Also some usual Sunday night stuff. And as always, it's an open thread. So step on in and join the conversation!

Feel Good Story

Dog Tag of Fallen WW II Soldier is Returned to Family 80 Years After His Death

doof-WWII-soldier-Joseph-L-Gray.jpg

The dog tag ID belonging to a fallen World War II soldier has been returned to his family 80 years after his death.

Joseph L. Gray was one of 31 servicemen who died in April 1945 when their plane, a B-17 Flying Fortress, crashed into a hill on the Isle of Man.

In 2010, around 65 years later, the Philadelphia soldier’s dog tags were unearthed by a metal detector and handed over to the Manx Aviation and Military Museum on the UK island.

It wasn’t until the great nephew of another soldier who died in the crash—Donald Madar, a friend of the museum—saw the tag this year and said he knew a relative of Gray’s through a Facebook group he runs.

Eight decades on, he returned the “prized possession”, taking it back where he said it belongs—to the technical sergeant’s great niece Bridgette Daily.

“It was a wonderful moment handing the tag over,” Donald told SWNS news agency.

Nice story. Read the whole thing.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

------

Melania was a stunner this week, and so was Usha!

Melania turned heads at the opening night of Les Mis at the Kennedy Center in a Bottega Veneta matte crepe viscose jersey maxi dress. The dress featured an asymmetrical neckline, statement gold accents, and draped beautifully. This is what understated elegance means!

IMG_4359r.jpg

Melania paired the dress with Christian Louboutin Napa Patent Veau Mirror Eklectica 120s. Unfortunately, these are sold out at the moment.

IMG_4340r.jpg

At the same event, Usha looked beautiful in a black crepe asymmetrical Eva gown by Shoshanna.

IMG_4360r.jpg

IMG_4362r.jpg

At the Whitehouse picnic this week, Melania looked chic in a summery ensemble with vibrant florals. The First Lady paired a white blouse with Dolce & Gabbana peony print cotton jacquard pants. She wore Manolo Blahnik BB 115 Orchid pink suede pumps that completed the look perfectly, and our President wore a matching tie. Could that be any cuter?

IMG_4365r.jpg

IMG_4345r.jpg

IMG_4347r.jpg

Standing beside President Donald Trump during the 250th anniversary of the Army, Melania’s outfit was master class in aligning with the patriotic theme of the parade. It was a fantastic blend of elegance with a military inspired edge. Melania wore a custom Adam Lippes white with blue pinstripe suit. It featured a structured blazer with shoulder pads done right and pencil skirt.

IMG_4361r.jpg

In a world that feels chaotic, I appreciate being able to bring you a moment of frivolity. Back to Doof!

Thanks Piper - I'll take it from here!

14 So, about Dad reflexes: Minot, ND, around April. I'm working on some Honda car and my approx 17 month old daughter came out to "help". She found her stroller and wanted to go for a walk. I said just wait a little. She decided to unfold the thing, then fell face down on top of it. Some crying ensued. I quickly leapt into action, grabbing her waist and intended to toss her up in the air, which she loved, BUT. The stroller had collapsed on her right index finger and when I got her about a foot up, it stayed caught and she collapsed. Lotsa tears, unhappy Mom. All turned out OK.

94 Little was regaling me with tales from his recent trip in Turkey with GF's family. After three days of overcooked steak, he convinced the captain of the family yacht to let him do the strip steaks. Of course, he couldn't prepare a wood fire (frowned upon at sea, so I'm told) so he seared them in the galley in olive oil for two minutes per side or so. Produced a nice medium rare, that apparently was a revelation in that part of the world.

I had to turn away for a few seconds after he told me this story. For over 19 years, I've raised him on Sunday steak, explaining the importance of honoring the supreme sacrifice of these great beasts by preparing them for maximum enjoyment, and respect the fine line between raw/bloody and incineration. Determine the cut, note the fat distribution, gauge the thickness, and respect the science. Once you have done this enough times, you will develop instincts for every situation and success will always be assured.

Today my boy told me that he is a man in full. It could not have been happier Father's Day...

I like this dress on her, and her hair. Her shoe game needs work, as does her makeup. I think she is trying to find her footing as she is a bit chaotic in her style. I can’t imagine the intimidating feeling of being next to Melania all the time when you haven’t been very fashion forward, though. I do think Melania has helped and we can pinpoint when. This dress, the floral sundress I featured recently. The royal off the shoulder dress she wore to the congressional spouses luncheon really was flattering. She wore a pattern dress to something this week, I forget what, that I didn’t feature because it was pretty bad.

139 I know I wasn't always the father that I wish I had been. Seems like I can think of so many things I should have done or should not have done or might have done better, and it's harder to recall anything where I think I did good.

Today, our wonderful daughter and her excellent husband came by. She brought flowers from her garden, and a very nice Father's Day card. MiladyJo had bought a new office chair to replace this one I've been complaining about, and daughter and son-in-law put it together. They also mowed our small fenced back yard, which had become such a jungle Daisy Dog wouldn't even go out there. Among other help. They brought their two dogs, and stayed a while, and it was nice.

Our Son had planned to come by for dinner, but he'd had a long week of long shifts, so we'll see him tomorrow.

Our kids love and respect MiladyJo, have been enormous help with errands and chores and even meals. They like each other and it feels like a real family. I can't take credit for how they turned out, but I'm proud of them. They made it a great Father's Day.

180 Dad reflexes - when my daughter was about 18 months old, we had had an ice storm, but I had to take her somewhere. At that time we lived in a place with a short outdoor 3 step to where the cars were parked. I was holding her, and as I went down the steps I suddenly realized they were coated in clear ice and my feet shot out from the under me. Well we went down hard; but I was able to make sure that only my body hit the stairs, and she landed on top of me. Of course she cried from the shock, but she was unhurt. I had a huge deep bruise of my ass that lasted about 6 weeks, and I have always believed I got a hairline fracture of my pelvis that day.
I didn’t go get an X-ray because I could still walk, and what were they going to do, put my ass in a sling? And at least the baby was OK.

My mother was of the generation that didn't leave the house without a girdle, makeup and high heels. She paid the price after 60. Both feet, three different surgeries.
My wife never wears heels, and when she worked in NYC, she was a contrarian. Other girls would carry their heels to work. She carried the tennis shoes she worked in and wore the heels on the subway. Gropers got a heel on the instep.

Malls are the HOAs of business lease arrangments.

When I worked at B&N, they were letting most of the mall store leases lapse (B.Dalton/Doubleday). Those stores could not be adapted to the concept they wanted, like cafes. But one B. Dalton mall store in Miami, I believe it was, was a moneymaker. It sat on a major customer vein. That thing had sales like a B&N store with a cafe.

"Bunch of" passports? Presumably counterfeit.

Iran's economy and infrastructure have been awful and declining for a long time. (hard to invest when all national wealth must go to stupid rockets and nuke weapon programs) Trucker's strike recently.

Israel has already hit fuel storage depots, and a sort of wake-up strike on a gas field. Family reports to emigres paint a very, very bleak picture on fuel, logistics, and things like banking. More infrastructure hits could be interesting.

Also, unlike Russians, who're justifiably paranoid and want to keep invaders out, the current regime in Iran wants nukes so that they can hand them off to proxy groups and pretend they're not accountable when our (or Israel's, or any number of Arabs') cities get vaporized.

As the sun rises this morning over the Iranian capital of Tehran, the mass exodus of residents from the city continues, with miles-long traffic jams on all major highways and roads exiting Tehran.

Throughout the upcoming week, Israel will likely attempt to push more residents to flee the city, by striking power facilities and other infrastructure, with hopes that this will spark civil unrest further destabilizing and weakening the Iranian Regime

402 The song about a father I always liked has already been mentioned several times; The Living Years-Mike and The Mechanics. It's posted on top! Me and Dad have been fine. Good relationship. He's a miracle. His parents were abusive and nasty, pretty much their whole lives. They both died sad and miserable, and it was their own fault. My Dad, it won't be that way when God calls him home. His family loves him, and he loves them. He had to learn how to be a father and husband because he had awful ones growing up. He has done well. Not perfect but he's alright!

404 Dad's been gone 6 years now.

Spent his final Fathers' Day with his friends, on a sight-seeing train ride through the mountains. He often was out of town for holidays after Mom died.

Hubby & I saw him the night before he passed. He was in a good mood, sharp as ever, just a bit fatigued due to cancer. Said he had so enjoyed the train trip & the scenery was out-of-this-world gorgeous. (No pictures, as he'd dropped his cellphone and broken it that weekend.)

Shocked that he was incoherent the very next day and was gone that evening.

Love you, Daddy. Miss you.

The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics. Mike Rutherford's father was a high-ranking Royal Navy officer, but him and Mike got along fine. 412 This is not a Chinese company doing business in America. This is the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) operating on American soil—with full strategic intent.

Planted in the Shadow of U.S. Defense

When BYD chose to build its U.S. factory, it didn’t set up shop just anywhere.

It chose Lancaster, California—a quiet desert city just north of Los Angeles. But more importantly, just minutes from:
•Northrop Grumman – builder of America’s stealth bombers and military satellites
•Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works – birthplace of the F-117, U-2, SR-71, and F-22
•Palmdale Air Base – a hub for drone testing and next-generation aerospace
•NASA Armstrong Research Center – linked to military and space programs

A CCP-aligned factory operating within miles of America’s most sensitive defense projects.

This was no coincidence. This was a deliberate act of geostrategic positioning

414 The only thing my Dad and I really had in common was Cribbage. My Dad didn't teach me. I was into board games and in high school a friend taught me the game. I liked it along with backgammon/acey-deucy, all with the element of chance, be it cards or dice. Only found out years later my Dad played Cribbage. Sometimes we'd play for an hour or two (on a nice board I gave him). Mom was always amazed I could do something with him for that long a period of time. But we both liked Cribbage, though he lost an awful lot, complaining about the cards the whole way. But like I said, it was the only thing we had in common/did together for the fun of it. He liked my ooking, too, not that he hated my Mom's. He would eat most things put in front of him, but some foods he liked more than others and my spicy hand in the kitchen suited his come-by-honestly taste buds. His Mom made spicy pork sausage links, spicy enough for my Mom's hands to burn while mixing the meat for stuffing into casings.

I don't think it's just that. You can look at pictures prior to her even meeting William, and she just had that BB look. Wearing what was trendy for her set. Her jewelry is a perfect example.

She wears The Family Jewels beautifully. None better. But her personal jewelry is trendy and bland, those endless Kiki somebody earrings, for instance. Perfume also, especiallyround about the time of the wedding; Jo Malone and Illume (?). Very typical of what a Sloane Ranger would choose.

She's truly a BB. In the loveliest way, but a very stereotypical BB White Girl. And she did Charlotte wrong at TtC. She's at a hard age, no longer a little girl, but still too young to wear anything too grown. But she looked grumpy, pearl and diamond broach or not.

OR, but I was sooo hoping Sophie would get a jewelry upgrade.

431 Great ideas, guys!

I was thinking of a less work-intensive solution for the bedraggled caregiver, LOL.

You've got your hands very full, Tammy.

{{{hug}}} to you!

432 OK, this is just fuckin weird....

Just got a post on F book about 'Home made Ice cream'...

I mean... come on... really? Not even close to anything I've seen before...

433 Romeo13, that's just f'in CREEPY. Considering 428:

"Mama, for you, I’ll make it myself" after all our ice cream talk...

Yikes.

435 Dad had satellite teevee and wifi at his house.

One day, he'd looked up some obscure old jazz song on yootoob, on his desktop computer... then went to a bar to meet friends and whipped out his cell, to look up that old song again... and *there it was* first on the list.

He told me all about how "neat" it was.

I said: "Dad, doesn't that creep kinda creep you out?"

436 cut/paste fail. pffft.

437 She doesn't like Cookies and Cream, done tried that. She's not a fan of Oreos.

I'll look for Dreyers, thanks for that, and failing that, will make her some. Y'all are the best!

It's beyond creepy how they track us. I've set my phone to prevent it, but it still happens. Some browsers are better than others at blocking it. Duck Duck Go says it does.

Proton for EEEEkmail.

Glowie peeps probly know everything about me, but spammers maybe not so much. I hope?

Never ever ever will have a aleksa or ekkodot.

440 Never ever ever will have a aleksa or ekkodot.

Amen. I understand the ooooh, cool! factor, but it's beyond my comprehension that people willingly allow themselves to be constantly monitored.

And tea, they're doing it anyway, but still. Same thing with those doorbell cameras. Not no way, not no how.

441 Biden's Dog - wish at least mention there are many here hoping the best for you and your neighbors.

442 Guy at work once told me how he & his wife were talking about something at dinner. They had aleksa nearby... Next thing he knew, was getting all kinds of ads for that very same something on his cell phone.

He was perturbed. I laughed, because HE was in an "electronics tech" position! Shouldn't he have *known*?

443 It has been said: "Well, if you've got nothing to hide, then you've got nothing to worry about."

My response?

"Do you strip naked, in your front room, with the curtains opened? If not, why not?"

444 Hi Tammy…

My mother shares your Mom’s love for chocolate chip ice cream. Haagen Dazs Vanilla Chocolate Chip is delightful. I believe it is only available in the pint size. Not cheap, but Publix here in Florida has it on BOGO relatively frequently. God bless you caring for your mom. I’m heading down the same path, although I have not yet completely admitted it to myself.

445 Chocolate chip is my favorite

Get to a lawyer now, an estate planning lawyer, and get her assets protected. I mean it, NOW. If she ends up in a nursing home and runs out of money, they are entitled to everything. Can't take the house while a spouse or minor child ( and grandkids dont countbunless she has custody) is living in it, but they will put a lien on the property.

I couldn't bring myself to talk to her about it when I should have, and I regret it.
