My initial impression is that of a parting kiss as the daughter is dying. The middle figure is ghostly and appears to be moving from the daughter on the right to embrace her mother as her spirit passes. Quite evocative.
I'll see if I can come up with a bit of amusing doggerel yo capture that essence. Posted by: muldoon at June 19, 2025 09:39 AM (poXs5) 30
A woman ghost at Hill House. Eleanor is the middle woman, and the lesbian (?), Theo, is the other one?
I can't recall; was Eleanor's mother dead when the novel opens? Eleanor takes the car to go to Hill House, but it's half hers and half her sister's (?). Was their mother ever mentioned as being alive at that time? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 19, 2025 09:39 AM (omVj0) 31

If you're already good at art, then why do you need to go to school for it? If you know you can paint a masterpiece on command, you're probably a jerk, who wants to deal with ya. Between the almost monochrome shades of brown and gray, the fluid poses, and the nondescript backgrounds of similar colors Carriere achieves an ethereal, dream-like image. It is familiar but exaggerated just enough to avoid realism. There is a haunting quality that holds the viewer's attention. Even his straight portraits share that quality.
His Wiki page mentions a friendship with Auguste Rodin. I can see the influence with the way the figures flow together and have an element of emerging from the background. It reminds me of the poses in Rodin sculptures. It would have been interesting to see Carriere's version of the Green Man with the wood spirit's face emerging from a mass of foliage. CBD, Thanks for today's choice. I hadn't heard of this artist but his style and techniques are very interesting. Posted by: JTB at June 19, 2025 09:58 AM (yTvNw) 65

Art Thread Limericks 101
Thymr scheme AABBA 1. Come up with a pun related to the picture or the artist. Make this the last line, the paunch line. 2. First line often takes the form of "There once was a [person] from [place]. Treat it like a Mad-Lib. You can take liberties with names and places in order to make it rhyme with the last line. e.g. "a man named McNoodle" 3. line 2 is kind of a throw away, nice if it ties in with the others, but it can be a bit of a non sequitur. 4. Lines 3 and 4 should be short and punchy and form a bridge to tie in the 5th line. Single syllable last words work well. "She shouted once more, as she walked out the door" leads to the punch line. 5. Rework your phrasing to establish a lilting rhythm by picking synonyms with different # of syllables or insert an adverb or exclamation to flesh out the rhythm if needed. Read it out loud in your head before you hit "post" 6. Remember, you are telling a story. Posted by: muldoon at June 19, 2025 10:25 AM (poXs5) 97
When I mentioned the idea of Carriere painting a Green Man, I also thought of that Obummer portrait. A Green Man image should evoke echoes of ancient times and forces that remain, unsettling the present. The Obama portrait was just a stupid, uninspired attempt to be intriguing. Appropriate considering the subject. Although he continues to haunt the country.

These 2023 emails, obtained by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and dropped exclusively to the New York Post, reveal the depths of anti-Trump lawfare that festered under Biden’s watch. Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation, already an icon of politicized justice, was tainted by this nitpicking malice. One email from prosecutor JP Cooney, dated March 8, 2023, with the subject line “J6 Prisoner Choir/DJT,” practically drips with desperation. “Can we do some work to nail down Trump’s role in this,” Cooney — the deputy special counsel who worked on both the Robert Mueller and Jack Smith Trump witch hunt special counsel investigations — writes to his DOJ buddies, attaching a Forbes piece titled “Trump Collaborates On Song With Jan. 6 Defendants.”

It was by no means the "end of slavery" in what is now the United States. That occurred on October 18, 1867, when the US took possession of Alaska and freed the slaves held by the Tlingit tribe. Whistleblowers have told Grassley that Giardina “openly stated his desire to investigate Trump, even if it meant false predication,” because of his hostility to the past and future president.
Grassley believes this email chain is another “clear example” of how the federal law enforcement apparatus was weaponized to try to “get Trump” at all costs. “Instead of focusing on DOJ and FBI’s core law enforcement responsibilities,” Grassley told The Post, “partisan prosecutors and agents were surfing the web to find any shred of information they could use to spin another baseless case against Trump. Their actions are a disservice to Americans, who pay their salaries and depend on DOJ and FBI to keep them safe.” Posted by: SMOD at June 19, 2025 10:39 AM (RHGPo) 131

Posted by: muldoon at June 19, 2025 10:25 AM ( -- Thanks! But ... would it also help to know stuff? Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons ---------- Back when I studied game theory, ambiguity of one of the players as to actions often produced optimal effects at low cost. Difficult to model though. Bright line threats were better if you had surety as to ultimately 'winning'. Trump is essentially conflating ambiguity AND bright line threat. E.g. Iran cannot have nuke weapons but at the same time ambiguity as to whether the US will or will not take out nuclear targets in Iran that Israel cannot. As an earlier commenter mentioned, it freezes the Iranian military as they have to keep a reserve to deal with American entry at the same time while engaged with Israel who is destroying key infrastructure bit by bit. Ditto for the political structure that is now missing a lot of trusted military advisors as to whether to capitulate, resist, etc. I suspect Israel and the US plus others are gaming out the relative likelihoods of actions albeit with far better info than the public has. If you're already good at art, then why do you need to go to school for it? If you know you can paint a masterpiece on command, you're probably a jerk, who wants to deal with ya.
