Last week I asked the following: Welp, I think we have pretty well established you people, for the most part, are not thinking about anything and definitely not focusing on fundamentals when you are shooting. SIGH This hurts, people. This hurts Weasel deeply Q: Weasel, why does our lack of focus on fundamentals hurt you so deeply? What I am getting at is attitude and mental preparation are key aspects of performance. It doesn't much matter what complex task you are performing, your attitude and preparation plays an important part in deciding whether you suck or perform well. That's what this whole focus on fundamentals boils down to. If you want to shoot well, focus on the fundamentals of shooting. If you want to make toast well, focus on the fundamentals of making toast. Hell, you don't need to believe me. Cigar of the Week ![]() Lately I've been trending mostly maduro and darker fare, but came into a new-to-me Connecticut shade stick to try, and glad I did. Drew Estate's Undercrown Shade is a handsome golden brown cigar with minimal "tooth" or veins to its wrapper. Actually as you'll see in the photo, this stick had some small cracks in the wrapper up near the cap. Noticed this, so got out my handy burmacol (vegetable glue, what holds cigars together) and touched up the flaws - and let it dry while I loaded another 50 rounds of 45ACP. When I did burn this cigar, it was a pleasant experience throughout. Even burn, nice medium draw, ample smoke (though not as much as many Drew Estate sticks put out, which can be sort of amazing). Definitely mild-medium, with a distinct overall sweetness, and to me a sweet citrusy note. Perfect choice when you're looking for something mild and easy. I smoked the gran toro (6 X 52), which can be found online for just over $8. As a side note, any more than occasional cigar smoker should have the glue on hand. I have PerfecRepair brand, there are others. Wrappers do sometimes crack, and for a few bucks you can have the ability to save a cigar that would otherwise unravel on you. Most excellent, rhomboid! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Hi everybody!
Congrats Weasel. Retirement is wonderful especially if you have "hobbies". here a bit earlier than usual because a small contingent of the MGC met yesterday at the range. I continue to work on sighting both with iron sights and with the dots. Shot at 3, 5, 7 and 9 yds and had fun. Had fewer episodes of double vision. The G48 with the holosun green dot was the clearest. Because it is a circle and not a solid it is easier to focus on the target. I'm almost convinced I won;t need shooting glasses but will need more sessions to make sure . Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at June 15, 2025 07:16 PM (t/2Uw) 28

Undercrown Shade is a good stick but like almost all Drew Estate sticks I think they’re overpriced. The Diesel Uncut CT is a similar smoke (I like it better, actually) for 1/3 less price. The uncut is one of my go-to smokes when I’m looking for something lighter, maybe mild- to medium-bodied.

Got back to my shooting spot and did some sight adjusting. Wyomingsightdrifter.com makes a nifty little gadget, sort of like a spring loaded slide hammer. It will eventually move the most stubborn dovetailed sight.
The Ruger RXM 9mm shot quite nicely. It takes Glock magazines, is set up for a future red dot sight, and retails for about $400. I say every household should have one, along with their Remington 870 12 gauge and the family AR-15. The 1911 Turkish clone got a workout. Tisas "Duty" model in .45 ACP. The good news is it shot nice groups with factory 230 grain FMJ. The bad news it printed those groups 5 inches high at 25 yards. I could file down the rear sight, but I think I will fiddle around with ammo selection first. A 200 grain load might hit lower enough. A taller front sight is also a possibility. I went to the Chantilly show on Friday and Saturday (missed the DMV MGC meet up, oops). Picked out a safe because the collection needs more room. Prices for guns appeared to hold steady, but some noteworthy firearms had price cuts on them. Trader Jerry had H&K SP5s cut from $3299 to $2799. SSG Tactical had a good selection on Benelli M4s set up with the collapsing stock ($2200) and M-LOK handguards ($2700). It was the best selection I've ever seen of these hard to source shotguns. A lot of rare ammo was out there (factory.38 Long Colt, .44 Russian). But the tariffs are starting to bite a little. Foreign made ammo was scarce, along with some firearms. Word going around was that if you wanted something that's imported into the US, you might want to grab it now. There's no guarantee on how the trade negotiations will go, so the distributors were saying that what they have in the pipeline is all they'll get for the foreseeable future.

How did the dog walker do on her date with Gertie? Posted by: nurse ratched at June 15, 2025 07:32 PM (mT+6a) 48
I don’t go shooting as often as I’d like, but when I do go, I just keep it safe and have fun. I don’t sweat the group. I like shooting different guns more than perfect precision. I am a pretty good shot, though. Not great. But good. I don’t have a lot of shooting experience, but the calm relaxed sighting and pull comes pretty naturally to me. All these years of extreme sports, I guess.

Short note now, will be back to read content in a moment.
But did more testing with the G30. The light primer strikes have gone away with the new striker spring, but it's failing to go into battery sometimes. Maybe limp wristing but...this hasn't been an issue until now and I've had more than 1k rounds through it before this. Guessing recoil spring needs replacing, as I did buy the gun used. Unknown mileage. But it's demoted from EDC until I get it running back to normal. One the positive side, the Glock 26 is really impressing me. Again used frame, used slide. New recoil spring and a detailed clean have gotten rid of all mechanical problems. (It still needs the rear sight drifted right) The gun is running well, printing good groups and is very comfortable to fire especially with Magpu 12 round magazines. It is getting promoted to a Summer carry option. I have a Don Hume IWB holster on the way for it. We'll see how it carries. Posted by: Javems at June 15, 2025 07:59 PM (8I4hW) I remember the troops in 3rd Armored Division walking around with those in 1990-91 during Operation Desert Storm. I'll look for the Diesel Uncut CT, Elric, thanks for the lead.
I generally approach cigar procurement like that for reloading components - a game to spend as few $ as possible. This particular Undercrown clocked in at $1.70, thanks to an "introductory" sampler deal from Cigar Page that somehow was open to a long-time customer like me. With various vendors, sales, and specials, I can't say I have seen any particular pattern of priciness for Drew Estate products. Apart from the obvious suspects - Ashton, Padron, et al - I think my costs are similar across brands. Oliva is the one big brand that's usually a bit cheaper. We have 4 here . 2 Quarter horses and two thoroughbreds My daughter was on the Hunter Jumper team at Asbury college in Lexington. And they rescue Thoroughbreds after they get done racing , so a couple she trained ended up following her home from college. We are starting an equestrian therapy biz here. The bad part is I have a gun range here but cant shoot that often anymore cause it's right next to the horse pasture and she doesn't want me to spook them . Insert sad emoji .

Had an interesting shootin' match this morning but only participated a bit due to an odd and badly timed flare-up of what I think is tendonitis in left forearm (ECU tendon). Diagnosed by a forearm specialist orthopedic surgeon a few years back - he skated in my regular pick-up and one day I had my favorite kind of medical appointment: talking with a top-level doc while gearing up before a scrimmage.
Anyway the match had all manner of interesting challenges (pushing a push-mover with one hand while one-handed shooting, etc). We hope it will be a recurring event. Posted by: rhomboid at June 15, 2025 08:15 PM (1m82a) 98

45ACP (Gawd's Own Caliber) reloading completed, now 30 carbine. Gonna make a crap-ton of that, as the carbine is a such a fun and easy little rifle to shoot, one tends to burn up lots of ammo. My female supervisor loves it, and shoots it well. Then on to the rest: 9mm, 45 Colt, .380, and 30-06 for the M1s. Cans are empty and crying out to be filled.

I have one in my truck, one in my wife's vehicle and one in a lockbox we take while evacuating... like for a tornado or some other natural/man-made disaster. M-3 Grease Gun?
Paul Tibbets, yes that Paul Tibbets, in the 1960s had just passed through some border checkpoint in Europe. It was only after he had gotten through that he remembered in the car's boot was an M-3. IIRC he then quickly found a nice lake and gave the M-3 a proper burial. But it has many long years since I read his biography where this story is recounted. So, a couple of range reports. I've been working on the 6.5-06, getting it ready for a couple of matches. Thing seems to shoot ridiculously well. Amusing side note, I was under the impression I was pushing the round extremely hard due to the wacky elevation numbers I was getting when shooting out to 500 and 600 yards.
I then realized it was a combination of bad data and shooter error, mainly shooter error in that I was working from a faulty premise. Yeah, what was throwing me off was my zero stop. I had it set 1/2 MOA high for a 100 yards, hence the weird elevation numbers further out. Once I corrected things, the ballistic app and scope adjustment started lining up. Oops. Range report!
Farmers local to my regular stomping ground have been baiting pretty heavily, so rabbits were scarce. Put away the 12g and grabbed the .22, a target, and a pocket full of shells. Decided to focus on trigger control. 5 round groups from 50ish yards in the paddock. Standing unsupported would have scored me a fox if it was stationary in that perfect sideshot position. Leaning against a tree came in at minute-of-bunny. Prone resting the fore end on my fist for the box's last 3 round got them all inside 2 adjacent squares. Wobbly shit sucks, I know. I just can't justify the weight of a tripod and bulk of a rear bag for the the shooting I do. Posted by: Nato at June 15, 2025 08:47 PM (pBz/W) 146
You know....
How about we get the morons who think a FRT makes something a machine gun to watch the M3 Grease Gun video? It mentions over and over how the slow rate of fire makes them so much more effective and useful for shooting lots of commies (sssshhh, don't mention the NAZI thing). I'm thinking that, just maybe, we could get them WANTING to up the rate of fire on regular firearms to make them supposedly less effective. Is it worth a try? They are idiots, after all. Could we pull it off? Posted by: GWB at June 15, 2025 08:47 PM (KoK5d) 147
So...IS .380 better than I think?
Well I think it's a little worse than .38 special. It has just enough power, if you don't use hollowpoints, but you do want to focus on shot placement, multiple hits preferably and ammo for it costs more than 9mm (only about 5 or 6 cents a round for FMJ). I do carry the round on occasion but not as a primary carry. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at June 15, 2025 08:48 PM (xcxpd) Posted by: rhomboid at June 15, 2025 08:48 PM (1m82a) 149

Posted by: rhomboid at June 15, 2025 08:53 PM (1m82a) 156
We went to the range to try out the irons and stances, but we did not do CAR there. But at home we pulled out the i-Target laser-dry fire thingy and tried some stances. What she theorizes is that she holds the pistol too low when she is in isoceles or Weaver - in a modified-Weaver with thehead tilt she is getting her line of sight more direct.
The CAR "system" is interesting. It seems purpose bult for John Wicking - high rate of fire at very close range. But, just doing it with laser it seems like it would take a LOT of practice to get the muscle memory in place - the shooting from your solar plexus position is very easy to just be wild - you aren't aiming with sights at all. Very pleased with the build, and hasn't FTF once. Then the beretta 92X compact at 15yds with the holosun RDO I slapped on it at Christmas. Tried zeroing it at 25yds, but that seemed too far - chasing that zero all over. 15 yds seemed more effective.

So, today, for Father's Day, I took my daughter to the range and had her shoot the 6.5-06. Complete newbie to this kind of rifle but, she found the weapon easy to shoot. At 200 yards, she put the first one in the bullseye, then tossed one high, knew it was on her, then put another round on top of the first round. I told her I wanted her to shoot so I could gather some data, thinking it would help if I had someone shoot the rifle who wasn't all that familiar with it. I was trying to remove any bias I might be bringing to the shoot.
After that and a couple of other rifles, we moved to the 1,000 yard range. Once I got my act together with the spotting scope, I had her on the 14"x17" steel within a couple of shots. My daughter put far more rounds downrange than I did, by far, yet, I had a great time, working to get her settled in. One of the best Father's Days I have in a long time. About a hammer fired gun - sra blaster is moving off of a Sig P365 for EDC use into the CDS9. As a Kimber it has a lot of 1911 heritage in it. It is SAO hammer fired, and it has a positive thumb safety but no grip safety.
We were talking about it - she's been carrying with one in the pipe in the 365. I suggested that she may not want to do that with this gun - cocked and locked is supposedly the safe way with a 1911 but now we have added a safety into the process. The other option is rack the slide. I think from a safery perspective, the ROI is more on the rack the slide side. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at June 15, 2025 09:04 PM (QfvaV) 176

But I'll observe that if you need to draw and fire, time can be critical and you may not have both hands free. I strongly endorse carrying with a round in the chamber with a pistol that can do so safely. But you're a grown up, I figure I can trust your judgement. Speaking of dots etc - as we were trying to figure out sra blaster's shooting, she shot my P365XL with a red dot.
That she was okay with. I am wondering if there is also something about the glass on different dots that her eyes are not adapting to correctly. Also I was shooting that XL and while I have gotten better with the years of shooting I am by no means a great shot. But I can shoot that XL. Under ten yards, I am better with that pistol that with anything else in the laager, including my P226 Legion. And I don't shoot it that much. Some guns are just a better fit than others. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at June 15, 2025 09:04 PM (QfvaV) I'm going to respectfully disagree. To draw and rack the slide requires a whole different set of muscle memory and prevents a smooth draw and fire. It also entails getting your off-hand onto the gun while drawing - at least you won't shoot your off-hand while you're doing it. Th thumb safety is (or should be - plenty of guns it is not, IMO) easy to throw with your firing hand in the midst of the draw. But you can still fire one-handed or bringing it up to a two-handed grip in the normal way. I practice my draw (dry fire) so that I rotate the handgun to my opponent, then drop the safety. I can then fire as necessary. Because you're not probably going to get a shot at the bad guy from 7 yards - it will be "7 yards and closing." Posted by: GWB at June 15, 2025 09:14 PM (KoK5d) 198

And let us not forget ammo and mags. The gun show was in town. I bought a couple thousand rounds of 9mm. I bought some 124 Aguila - I have a Ruger P95 that is better with 124. My Legion P226 does NOT like that Aguila at all. Lots of stovepiping. The CDS9 and 365Xl were perfectly fine with it. That was a surprising outcome.
I need to get the finicky P95 out to see if it likes it. I had some after-market extendo Glock mags for the Extar EP9 and they have various success rates. I have some 2Amend ones that work great but lock back the bolt on the next to last round. Odd behavior. The ETS ones are horrible the springs bind up. The RWB from Korea are eh. So picked up some factory Glock 33 rders. I expect them to be fine. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at June 15, 2025 09:16 PM (QfvaV) 206

At the gun show today it is Father's Day and mama wants to get me something commensurate with the CDS-9. She had originally suggested getting me one, too, as that is our brand - but as I said above the 365XL is serving very well in EDC capacity and I can shoot that thing.
We went with getting a gun for me in mind but I didn't see any guns I wanted. I think I am taking ill. But I am just not sure what I would want for ME. She was willing to get a Desert Eagle (way more than the CDS-9) but I said I would only want one for her - I did not see any .50AE in the whole gun show, I can imagine what it costs to shoot one of those. In our 2 of everything plan we only have 1 12 ga and she does not like the Mossberg 590 it is pretty brutal to shoot. Looked at Benelli M4 clones and she likes shooting those, and again, if I got one of those, it would just be for her. We looked at some SP5 clones but most of the ones I saw had fakey-fake giggle switches - they had the no pew, pew, pewpewpew, pewpewpewpewpewpew graphics on the selector but only flipped between safe and semi. I ALMOST suggested a Sig P220 because I do like Sig and I don't have anything in .45 from them - but no. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at June 15, 2025 09:31 PM (QfvaV) 236

And one thing about new guns. Holsters. It takes a while to tool up. I think the CDS9 hit the streets in December, Not a lot out there. We had a kydex one custom made at the show.

At 5 rounds, the M14/M1A is a pleasant shooter. When you get to 100 rounds per session, the recoil, even with the semi-auto softening, gets to you. My shoulder wasn't the worst, it was the inside of my mouth, right side. The cheek weld slid my teeth across the inside of my mouth. Times 80 or thereabouts, it would start bleeding, but at around 50 rounds, it would get irritated enough that it was noticeable.
Oh, yeah... Ft Knox basic, '64. I liked the gun well enough, I bought a Mini-14. Shoot it all day, even before I put a scope on it, with no recoil related issues. Posted by: buddhaha at June 15, 2025 09:38 PM (fQAHz) 244

Posted by: Iris at June 15, 2025 09:38 PM (bOJ2I) Thanks. I kind of have a hankering for a lever gun since I don't have one of those and they have some cool tactical ones now but then I get into the whole caliber sprawl and if I get a rifle in 357 or 44 I have to get a revolver in that to match.... Doing an install of Linux Mint 20 on the desktop box. Could not find the new SSD I thought I had; might have taken it to AZ? So installing it alongside Mint 18 in a 160 gB hard drive. That install of 18 has a bunch of my files in it, so I can copy over entire directories, and once done, get rid of the 18 partition. At least in theory...

Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at June 15, 2025 09:49 PM (CA3k/) Fear the caliber sprawl... ...but yeah. Solid round. If I was to buy a lever action from scratch, I may suggest the mighty 30-30. Unless you really want a pistol to match (I did, bought a Rossi 92 that matches my Ruger Vaquero in .44). Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at June 15, 2025 09:51 PM (xcxpd) 258
I thought I had received an email offering an Anderson AR-15 for Father's Day for $329. Went looking for it later, but couldn't find it. Checked the store I thought it came from, but their lowest price option was $380.

How many fighters cab one tanker keep supplied with fuel?
Posted by: Boss Moss at June 15, 2025 09:46 PM (i51dK) On a cross-ocean trip, we usually hauled 6-8. If we were doing a bridge, we could likely handle 20 or so. (With another tanker at the other end.) Posted by: GWB at June 15, 2025 09:57 PM (KoK5d) 268

(With another tanker at the other end.) Posted by: GWB at June 15, 2025 09:57 PM (KoK5d) The KC-46 can drag more. But you have to factor in what the fighters are carrying. If they're going to, say, Lakenheath, to land, then they will just have travel pods. If they're carrying ordinance, then fewer fighters per tanker, maybe. BTW, you do NOT want to be that fighter pilot - flying to Lakenheath is bad enough; flying to the Mid-East? I hope you have a replacement a** waiting for you on the other end, because yours will be worn out. Now, if they're hauling something like the B-2... With a bridge (the tankers turn around somewhere out over the Atlantic), you could probably do 2-3 per tanker on each end. You could probably only drag 1 each (with safety margins, and all).
