THE FRIDAY NIGHT JOKE
A wife and her husband were having a dinner party for all the major status figures in Rome, Italy. The wife was very excited about this and wanted everything to be perfect. At the very last minute, she realized that she didn't have any snails so she asked her husband to run down to the beach with the bucket she was handing him to gather some snails. Very grudgingly he agreed. He took the bucket, walked out the door, down the steps, and out to the beach. As he was collecting the snails, he noticed a beautiful woman strolling alongside the water just a little further down the beach. He kept thinking to himself "Wouldn't it be great if she would even just come down and _talk_ to me." He went back to gathering the snails. All of a sudden he looked up, and the beautiful woman was standing right over him. They got to talking, and she invited him back to her place. (cont.) They were at her apartment a ways down the beach, and they started messing around. It got so hot and heavy that he was exhausted afterwards and passed out there. At seven o'clock the next morning he woke up and exclaimed, "Oh no!!! My wife's dinner party!!!" He gathered all his clothes, put them on real fast (how long does it take to throw on a toga and buckle some sandals?), grabbed his bucket, and ran out the door. He ran down the beach all the way to his apartment. He ran up the stairs of his apartment. He was in such a hurry that when he got to the top of the stairs, he dropped the bucket of snails. There were snails all down the stairs. The door opened just then, with a very angry wife standing in the doorway wondering where he's been all this time. He looked at the snails all down the steps, then he looked at her, then back at the snails and said: "Come on guys, we're almost there!" Trump is a one-off, a self-generated force of nature. He doesn't do the 'go along to get along' Republican Failure Kabuki Theater. When Trump is gone, the Dems are going to come hard. J.D. Vance better start doing some things now. We criticized Kammie for doing nothing. But the Republican Party will be thrilled Trump can no longer run in '28, moreso than even the Dems. The Republicans can get back to losing with dignity, then becoming a hard-core verbal opposition Party which fails once again yet somehow with individuals getting rich. It was understood at the time to be the language of the computer. It was everything. The original Operating System. Using punchcards.

My high school had a hopped up Chevelle. It was passed down through the Senior classes for several years.
Don't know who bought it originally, but a high school senior working part time at the sawmill while living at home could make the payments on it. Of course, graduation meant getting married and starting a family, so the Chevelle would get sold to the next kid in the incoming senior class. I left town and never looked back. For all I know, that Chevelle is still rumbling in the high school parking lot at lunchtime. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 14, 2025 12:12 AM (UJD2L) 311

I just read the dumbest article I think I ever have...on Gizmodo, which I guess is not a surprise.
The gist of it is that it is Trump's fault, from 2017, that the tech industry is having layoffs. See Trump reduced a tax loophole allowing mega globe corps to write off money on "research". Because he's greedy. And the billionaires owning these companies are greedy. Oh and the people working at them? Also greedy. So get that? Trump is helping the rich by reducing a tax loophole that the rich use. And that's bad. Because Trump is for the rich. Not only is this propaganda tripe presented as news, even if you believe every part of it it does make any sense. Posted by: 18-1 at June 14, 2025 12:44 AM (t0Rmr) 369

Centrifuges would be destroyed if they were in operation when the power was interrupted. The gas that's in them… Uranium hexafluoride? would throw them off kilter as they slow down, and they would basically blow up. They are brought up to speed in stages.

At the low end of the scale here, imagine trying to drill a hole in the ground by repeatedly shooting a bullet at the same spot. I think it's fairly intuitive that you're not going to get very far doing that. The first few bullets will knock out a crater, but after you get so deep, material just starts falling back in, and all you're doing is just churning dirt. The same limit, on a larger scale, applies to bunker busting bombs. On the simple hand, you can try to just pure kinetic energy, a big, fast bullet. On the other end, you have the bunker busters, which use kinetic energy to penetrate, and then a high explosive to cause a shockwave. As you try to increase the energy, there is no difference in the limit, and you can just imagine something like "rods from God", throwing hypersonic projectiles at the target. The limit of maniacally throwing Rods from God penetrators at a 200m in rock target. You get a big crater, but not 200m deep. In the limit, after 100s of hits, all the energy just goes to heat. You get a little basin of molten lava in the crater. At that point, the heat loss to radiation (and a little vaporizing) limits the temperature. A red hot little pool of molten rock. That does not get down 200 m. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 14, 2025 12:52 AM (w6EFb) 383

To kill Nasrallah in Beirut, the Israeli’s employed a novel technique, sinc his bunker may have been 200 feet underground. They dropped 50 or 60 high powered bombs in rapid succession, targeted and timed to dig their way down to him. Even so, when his followers finally dug through the 200 tons is smashed concrete that was on top of his last redoubt, they found that he hadn’t been killed by the explosion; but the bombs had sucked all of the oxygen out of his underground fortress and left nothing but poison gases behind. So, little bullets at a 200 m under rock target are no good. How about a bigger bullet? Imagine we have unlimited energy. Let's throw a small asteroid at the target. We could do there. A mere 100 m diameter rock at 50 km/s would do it. That would make a crater down to 200 m of solid rock. Impact energy would be 380MT. A YUGE nuke, about 9 Tsar Bombas. That would not be an extinction level event, but it would wipe out a 100 km radius. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 14, 2025 01:06 AM (w6EFb) 402

Posted by: JQ at June 14, 2025 01:21 AM (rdVOm) I have my favorite National coffees, like Costa Rican or Jamaican Blue Mtn or even our own Kona from Hawaii. Last two very expensive. I've enjoyed some African beans, some not so much. Coffee, at least national beans, are like wine. Different tastes and strengths for different people. The bean grown and the drying/roasting method used. I like espresso, but it's strong, not burnt. Of course, there is the mandatory add of some Sambuca. But that's neither here nor there. I also love New Orleans Roast, with the chicory. A local bean place had a recipe for that, with 10% of the mix being dry roasted chicory. It was as good as Cafe du Monde as I could get as far away from the cafe as I was. But's that's pretty much it on the strong, almost burnt stuff. More medium roast is better to me. My stomach seems happier, too. Posted by: RickZ at June 14, 2025 01:33 AM (gKDq2) 417

Do not understand it. Don't like whole bean roasts which taste burnt, either, like French roast. I guess I'm a mild to medium roast guy. And I think it may have contributed to the dementia, too, based on studies that are coming out. She took Benadryl for sleep constantly when I was a kid, and there are studies implicating it as a contributor, as well.

And good evening! Posted by: Blonde Morticia at June 14, 2025 01:37 AM (wbZPZ) I've been grinding my own beans (sometimes my gears but those are different stories) since the mid '80s, when I got my first coffee grinder, somewhere around $25-30; lasted for well over twenty years. Now I'm on coffee grinder # 2, again well over 20 years because this one was used; my friend no longer used it so I inherited it. This one's probably around 35 years old now. Coffee grinders last a long time if you don't beat them up. I also like the fresh ground flavor that comes with grinding beans at home, all those just released oils brewed into the pot. That's why I get an oil slick on my pitcher of iced coffee and why I stir before I pour. I don't want to be greedy with the flavor so I redistribute. Funny thing about the L.A. riots of 1992 is that I do not remember the “rooftop Koreans”. I DO remember street Koreans: dudes who had their guns out, pointed at the mob, who made it plain that their lives and property would only be threatened at the mob’s personal risk.

341 I prefer my bacon crispy, so the fat melts on my tongue. I will eat it however it is presented to me, but I prefer crispy to floppy. Doesn't have to be like a charcoal briquet; more like a Lays potatoes chip.
But, again, I'll take it half raw the British way, or burnt. I ate a pound a day when I was doing strict carnivore. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor ----------- Have to cook it three ways here. I have said this before and I will say it again...Cadillac and Lincoln will eventually die as it will never work to effectively be "look at us, we are almost like Benz and BMW but a bit cheaper". The only hope, and it might not work without really good advertising, would be to build big retro cruisers with a classic feel. Modern V8 engines, suspensions and mostly tires would allow them to get 25 mpg highway and handle perfectly fine for anyone who isn't a road racer. Think Harleys but cars. Use old American model names. It's been long enough that the gramps who bought the last of them are off the road and younger people don't really have that association. Never happen though. as the " elites" all are envious of foreigners and want to be them.

I don't know why my fresh-ground coffee doesn't taste magnitudes greater than Starbux.
Posted by: Blonde Morticia at June 14, 2025 01:53 AM (wbZPZ) It's finding the coffee bean and the ratio per mug that suits your taste buds. For me, three mugs of coffee starts with 3 cups of water, plus a half a cup for the pot. (Leftovers become iced coffee.) My spoon is a certain Naval service tablespoon. Two of those per mug, plus 1 for the half. 7 TBS of beans per 3 mugs, plus a little, of coffee. I grind them not into a powder but a course ground, in pulses, just like using a food processor. If you grind the beans for too long to get that powder, they actually begin to 'cook' from the heat of the spinning blades and it ruins the flavor. Try pulsing if you're not doing that already. Other than that technical side, like wine, it's all about the bean you like. Not what everybody else likes, what you like. As I said, I really enjoy Costa Rican coffee beans. A pleasant but unique flavor. Same with some of the African ones. Never really bought Asian coffee, except for that Kona. Posted by: RickZ at June 14, 2025 02:17 AM (gKDq2) 443
