Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Is This Something? Most of this will not be something. I know what some of you are thinking: Hollywood may be so devoid of ideas that they're remaking every movie from the 80s and nineties, but there's no way they're now remaking "classics" from the early 2000s, and even if they are, they certainly won't be remaking I Know What You Did Last Summer, for the love of everything holy. Well, guess what? You're wrong again. You're a black belt in Being Wrong About Everything. Fox is determined to milk the Alien franchise, which started the same year as the Iranian revolution, forever. They now have a TV show about aliens coming to earth. I don't get this. Yes, I liked Alien and I loved Aliens. But seriously, it's a limited concept. You can't just keep making movies and tv-shows and prequels about the same limited concept. Or I guess you can. But I don't get it. I have no further questions about the Terminator, Alien, or Predator universes. Or the Robocop universe. I have enjoyed their early entries. I've loved many of them. But we need to move on. There is no more juice in these well-squeezed fruits. Oh, and it turns out there is another Predator movie coming. Great, Mr. Fabulous, the self-described "fifty-year-old Bougie Bitch" Pedro Pascal, is in yet another movie. It's about a brave and noble sheriff fighting disinformation and disobedience as he attempts to enforce covid lockdowns. There's a moment of someone watching a podcast on the internet, so you know that's about Dangerous and Divisive Medical Misinformation. The end of the clip shows someone firing a heavy machine gun so that's gotta be Radicalized Far-Right Extremists Incited Into Violence. Now, I'm making a lot of assumptions. It could be that the movie is a more thoughtful look at the covid wars. But I doubt it. Nerdrotic says he has a Marvel source who says the new "Ironheart" Disney TV show is the worst thing that Marvel has ever done, and that includes their disastrous "Echo" show and "Secret Invasion" and "She-Hulk." It's being dropped with three episodes on one night so that the show is finished and forgotten as soon as possible. They did something similar with Echo, though in that case they dropped all five episodes in one night. Like one of those poops where everything goes in one smooth uninterrupted motion and you can't even believe how efficient and accomplished you are at pooping. The Superman movie continues to look over-stuffed with characters and plots but it also looks like it might be light and fun, like a comic book for kids. Which is A-OK with me. Let me get this off my chest: I'm sick and tired of NERDS!!! demanding that superhero movies or any other juvenile fare be "dark" and "grim and gritty" and "realistic" and hyperviolent and filled with cursing. This type of entertainment is -- or used to be, and should be -- kid-friendly. I think a lot of NERDS!!! are a little embarrassed that they like entertainment which is made for kids or made to at least be kid-friendly because that would suggest they're immature. So they want these entertainments to be made more "adult," but by "adult," of course they don't mean thoughtful, contemplative, and nuanced. No, they mean they want to see Superman rip people's heads from their bodies and use his laser vision to shoot holes through people's chests. And that he should say "f*ck" a lot. I have to admit that when I was younger -- like, teens and early twenties -- I had the same kind of idea. That this kind of movie would be Even Betterer if it were "hardcore." But as I've gotten older, and have approached, with increasing slowness, age 29, I've come to understand that I don't have to run away from my kid-self, or my teenaged self. My kid-self was right about a lot of things, and my teenaged self was too. I don't need these kind of kid-friendly entertainments to be "aged up" just to validate me, so I don't feel like a stupid baby for going to see a Batman movie. It's perfectly fine for an adult to enjoy an entertainment whose primary audience is younger people and kids. Every adult, even one approaching age 29, still has his 5-year old self inside him, and his 13-year-old self, and his 18-year-old self. Plus, a lot of children's entertainment can be pretty good. Disney cartoons from a bygone age often portrayed death in powerful and even traumatic way. Certainly Bambi portrays death much more realistically -- in that it has consequences -- than popcorn movies for "adults" that feature hundreds of people being killed with no one ever wondering if the dead enemies' wives and children will be looked after. Kid-friendly entertainment doesn't have to be childish, either. The original Superman was kid-friendly, but it was very well done. The original Star Wars films as well. (Bit of trivia: They filmed the severed arm in the cantina sequence for the sole purpose of getting a PG rating rather than the G rating they would have gotten without it -- they felt that teenagers would not see a G-rated film because teenagers are always afraid to be mistaken for kids or little babies.) The Indian Jones films are all basically kid-friendly, except for that one part in every Indiana Jones movie where someone gets his head chopped up by a propeller or something. Okay, maybe not for kids exactly, but a dad can watch that with his 12-year-old. "Kid-friendly" doesn't mean "childish." You can avoid all the things that flag a movie as R-rated while also avoiding the stuff that makes a movie seem childish -- cornball kid humor, simple-minded plots, cartoony "bouncy" background music, unrealistic characters, etc. You can make a movie that avoids the tropes of actual child fare and presents semi-plausible characters with semi-realistic adult psychologies. What Hollywood is doing is making very, very dumb movies with child-levels of nuance but throwing in R-rated violence to age it up. I don't know if Superman will be any good. I kind of doubt it. I don't think I'll wind up seeing it. But I do like the idea of making superhero movies and fantasy action movies with a younger audience in mind. I have fond memories of watching James Bond movies with my dad. Fathers need movies they can share with their kids. It can't all be about reassuring 25-year-old NERDS!!! that they're totally not babies because look, Superman just snapped this guy's neck. So hardcore! (I think James Bond books are basically boy's adventure fiction too, except the boy in question "borrowed" his dad's credit card to subscribe to Playboy.) I just don't get the idea that these Male Power Fantasy movies have to be "dark" and "mature." Having a Space Alien Cop snap the neck of a Space Alien Bad Guy isn't "mature." It's still children's entertainment with a veneer of graphic violence to seem mature. And don't get me wrong-- I like graphic violence, too. But I don't think Batman movies should look like the last twenty minutes of Rambo. That kind of movie should be reserved for 17 year olds, or 15 year olds who borrow their older brother's ID. Eh. I don't love Seth McFarlane but the director is Akiva Shaeffer or whoever The Other Guy from Lonely Island is. Mel Brooks announces "Spaceballs 2" coming in 2027. The teaser mocks Hollywood's sequel, prequel, reboot and side-quel mania.

===== So much of genre fiction is just power fantasy. And I have no problem with that. "I wish I could fly and shoot lasers from my eyes and defeat the alien army." or "I wish I was a secret agent who was great with guns and could bed any woman." It's fine. It has its place. It is kind of childish, but most people go to the movies for escapism, not a look at the human condition. The two can marry, but ultimately...people like escapism. It just changes form over the decades. MGM musicals were huge for a very long time. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, reflecting on change and permanence with Ozu at June 17, 2025 05:02 PM (GBKbO) 5

You can see the desire for silly things to be taken seriously really clearly in a few franchises, and a great example is Godzilla.
Went really silly through the 60s. Came back in the 80s and suddenly, super dark a super serious? I suspect the people who brought it back just really wanted that original hit of seriousness from the first one. It gave their love of silly movies about a man in a rubber suit stomping on miniatures an aura of importance. Posted by: TJM's phone at June 17, 2025 05:10 PM (GBKbO) 33

That's a good topic. I saw Red Letter Media review The Suicide Squad, the second one, the good one. That fat guy pointed out that it felt more like a superhero movie than Justice League, because the characters, although villains, were actually acting heroically. They also got along with each other, mostly. One thing I HATE in movies is contrived, pointless bickering between characters. I don't like this in real life, why would I want to see a movie featuring a lot of this? Justice League had the characters bickering pointlessly just because page 4 of every screenwriter's book says "movies must have conflict." Well, yes, they must have conflict *that actually matters.* In a Few Good Men, the conflict between Demi Moore and Tom Cruise over whether to take the plea deal or bring a losing case to court just to HOPE for a good outcome mattered. There was stakes there. Bruce Wayne baiting Wonder Woman about having hidden herself away was just unwelcomed padding. Posted by: ace at June 17, 2025 05:11 PM (KRtlO) 40

that was a good bit but I think the reasoning was: That existed mostly to provide a background for Ripley's extreme determination to save Newt. But they realized they don't really need to explain why Ripley wants to save an innocent little girl, so why include it? They also cut the Hadley's Hope stuff in the beginning, because that was there to humanize Newt and to show how terrible it was that she lost her family. They reasoned, people will like Newt with or without backstory and also we don't need a 10-minute section of film to prove to the audience that a slaughter of people by aliens is bad. They cut the automatic sentry guns because Cameron realized: It's robots versus insect aliens, who cares, what are the stakes? Whether the guns can preserve their ammo or not? I just don't get the idea that these Male Power Fantasy movies have to be "dark" and "mature." Having a Space Alien Cop snap the neck of a Space Alien Bad Guy isn't "mature."
MIB was a light, humorous bit of fun, but I always disliked the scene where a guy gets stuffed under a counter with a broken neck. It was gratuitous, and IMHO made the movie unsuitable for younger kids who might otherwise have enjoyed it. Posted by: Archimedes at June 17, 2025 05:16 PM (s8j++) 69

Thanks, ace. Great post. Long overdue for a movie post but a-hole moviemakers aren't giving much to work with. (Wife asked me last week how come we haven't done a movie date night in over a year and I said cuz there's nothing but sh*t out. And 10 years-ish ago we did them almost monthly...
And having little kids who I show the classics to ('our' classics, e.g. Christopher Reeve Superman, Rudy, Goonies, Disney movies that were good, etc.; they like the Rocky movies more than me...), it really is sad that they don't have more stuff made for their generation that isn't just grooming propaganda. They love Top Gun: Maverick. We've got our hopes up for Superman. And they love Spaceballs (basic cable; still funny but kid friendly); I'm worried that trailer will be better than the movie, but hopefully that one comes out great... Anyway, I never liked Zack Snyder. 300 was artwork, but the dude ain't mainstream and his DC stuff was lame (though did like Ben Affleck as Batman). Superman more than any superhero should be family friendly (and pro-American). Hope it comes out that way Posted by: bearski at June 17, 2025 05:18 PM (Bhsk7) 79

I'm sick and tired of NERDS!!! demanding that superhero movies or any other juvenile fare be "dark" and "grim and gritty" and "realistic" and hyperviolent and filled with cursing.
This type of entertainment is -- or used to be, and should be -- kid-friendly. ++++ Usually. There are *some* characters and stories (like the "Watchmen") that were always "gritty" and not really for kids. There are also some characters and stories (like Wolverine) where you *can* credibly make them gritty and adult. If you want a "Justice League" you can actually enjoy, go watch the animated series, plus "Justice League Unlimited" that came out in the early 2000's. Some pretty enjoyable stories in there, and it still feels like a kid's comic just in TV format. Smart enough to be enjoyable by adults who just want to spend some time with the kids, too.

(Bit of trivia: They filmed the severed arm in the cantina sequence for the sole purpose of getting a PG rating rather than the G rating they would have gotten without it -- they felt that teenagers would not see a G-rated film because teenagers are always afraid to be mistaken for kids or little babies.)) ++++ One of the most contemptible thing modern media - from movies to TV to books to music - has done is assert that "it's for kids" or "it's for families" means "it can be shit and it doesn't matter because kids are stupid anyway." Children's content needs to be fairly *simple* - not stupid and bad. I just had a six hour flight home. I tried to find a movie.
This is what I avoid: lesbian/homo sex movies; really stupid movies of simple gore; cornball Hallmark movies of love that would nauseate me and deplete however many brain cells I have left; Korean movies...why?; movies in Spanish that I click on and then get mad as there was no warning; movies with these actors and probably others: Kidman, Streep, Gerbil Gere, Jane Fonda, or any liberal who has moved to Europe due to Trump. I am sure there are more. Some actors may only have the sin of a facial mole or are ugly and I will not watch them. Therefore I watched a rerun, and another one of a fictional chef. I remain irritated that there is no original thought nor writing since, oh, the third writer's strike or covid or whatever. Sequels don't do it for me much at all, altho I will endure them on long flights. As much as I detest Ben Affleck I watched Accountant 1 and 2 because I felt a bit violent recently. His acting is rather wooden like his basic demeanor to the public. I could "act" like this as well and just show up. Oh, I also don't watch movies with Lopez as she irritates me. I do agree that the fixation with grim and dark and "realistic" superhero stuff is not just really tired at this point but never welcome to begin with. Superheroes don't have to be for little kids, but there are certain topics and aspects of life that they should largely avoid or only touch on very briefly and carefully.
For example, the entire Civil War storyline dealt with aspects of superheroes that should be left entirely untouched. You just don't GO there, because they ruin the entire genre, they undermine every concept of superheroes and the rules of their setting by worrying about government regulation and registration and innocents dying in superhero fights, etc. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at June 17, 2025 05:25 PM (e7kz6) 143

In C. S. Lewis' day, they said "adult" instead of "dark and gritty," but he nailed the mindset Ace is talking about pretty accurately:
"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” Posted by: Wiese at June 17, 2025 05:32 PM (W2RQ1) 195

What everybody seems to be missing is that all these remakes are NOT due to lack of imagination. The originals are part of our culture, and what they are doing is trying to re-write our culture.
Just look at Snow White, where everything that was loved about the original was stripped (and demonized), and a bunch of Woke BS was added. Or "Wicked", which is apparently popular due some great songs. In that, all the good guys from the Wizard of Oz are literally turned into bad guys, and vice versa. The bad guys have long understood the importance of culture, and took over Hollywood a long time ago. They're stepping up their reprogramming efforts, in an attempt to destroy our civilization, so they can remake it to their own ends. Posted by: MrExcitement at June 17, 2025 05:38 PM (hOOi9) 225

There have been only two modern writers Im aware of who have really gotten Superman. Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman) and Elliot S! What everybody seems to be missing is that all these remakes are NOT due to lack of imagination. The originals are part of our culture, and what they are doing is trying to re-write our culture.
Exactimundo. The remakes are partly copyright retention, partly global market reach, and a big part "we will manipulate what you once knew for young people." Its like the BBC's overpowering fixation on injecting black and what they call "asian" into the past, its not about representation, its about manipulating young people to know even know what the past was like and to destroy their heritage. Posted by: nurse ratched at June 17, 2025 05:33 PM (OG98j) While not the above reactions, the best movie on Amazon, at a recent time I needed peace, was "Surprised by Oxford." I ordered the book of the same title for the trip two weeks ago, by Carolyn Weber. She was an agnostic who won a scholarship to Oxford and life changed. Great writer, great interweaving of C.S. Lewis and the Romantics of English literature. I simply loved reading it every night before bed to the symphony of my husband's snores. Seriously, I loved both the movie and book. The book is possibly one of the best I have read in a long time...and I always have a book on me since our son's soccer practice. For wicked recent book laughs I liked Jojo Moyes "One Plus One" in the last month. Snort laughs trying not to wake my husband at times. She wrote others and one that became a movie, "Me Before You" that was good on Amazon. I liked the actor in it and saw some of his movies (name escapes me). that was a good bit but I think the reasoning was: That existed mostly to provide a background for Ripley's extreme determination to save Newt. Posted by: ace at June 17, 2025 05:15 PM (KRtlO -- I hadnt thought about those other two cuts. The Hadleys Hope bit was good too. "I'm sick and tired of NERDS!!! demanding that superhero movies or any other juvenile fare be "dark" and "grim and gritty" and "realistic" and hyperviolent and filled with cursing."
So. Back in the '90s, DC did a series that overall was called The Breaking of the Bat. Bane, a new supervillian, found Batman's lair, ambushed him, and then snapped his spine. Over the next, I dunno, year or so, they did a grim'n'gritty series about Bruce Wayne finding someone to be the new Batman while he went off to figure out how to restore his spine, etc. The new Batman was dark, gradually went insane, and wound up doing a bunch of stuff Batman Would Never Do. In the end, Bruce fought him in the batcave to take back the mantle. After the saga and its aftermath was over, they printed a bunch of letters complaining about how dark and grim the storyline was, and wrote a simple response: "you said you wanted a darker Batman, and we gave you one." I want to speak up for serious violence and consequences in superhero movies.
Stuff like Invincible (which I have my issues with) shows the awesome power of superheros and how much damage they can do. Which makes self control and virtue into real important qualities, worthy of emulation. When the guy who can punch through an M1 Abrams tank keeps getting into punching matches with mafia types on the dock...it goes from fantasy land into silliness. For me. Give me awesome power and show me the consequences of awesome power. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, buy ammo at June 17, 2025 06:08 PM (xcxpd) 441

Television started sliding downhill after David Janssen died. Last movie I caught in the theater was Doctor Sleep, and that was 5 or 6 years ago; could probably count the number of movies I've seen in a theater in the last 20 years on my fingers and I'd have fingers left over.

Yeah Knightfall, terrific series. They gave the bat-mantle to Azrael a really talented, gifted fighter who was koo koo bannanas, deliberately. Cutting out Robin, making him kill crazy and brutal. On purpose, because they wanted to show fans how they didn't really want Batman to be like that, and let them experience why. Rose...
We start off with her whining about the ship even though her fiancee has spent a lot of money getting them the best accommodations, then when everyone is trying to kick back and enjoy the cruise she does a faux suicide attempt so she can get attention, then lies about why she did it. She has lunch where her mother asks her nicely to stop smoking then blows smoke in her face, then turns around and insults the fucking CHAIRMAN OF THE COMPANY THAT OWNS THE BOAT. Decides to cheat on her fiancee with this bum, doesn’t do anything to help keep him from being embarrassed at a fancy dinner, poses nude for some crappy sketch, then starts running around the ship and disrupting operations. Posted by: WitchDoktor at June 17, 2025 06:12 PM (Qw3Dr) 467
Goes up and distracts the lookouts so they don’t notice the iceberg until it’s too late, then doesn’t speak up when the guy who cuckolded her fiancee is framed and handcuffed in the basement of the sinking ship.
Then when she gets a seat on a lifeboat, she jumps off which means someone else couldn’t use it. She follows this hobo around then when they’re in the water he finds a door that they can both fit on but she won’t scoot over for him, and won’t help him find another door he can use so he freezes to death and she shoves his corpse into the ocean. She then lets her mother and fiancee think she’s dead so she can go on and live some bohemian lifestyle. 447 Television started sliding downhill after David Janssen died. Last movie I caught in the theater was Doctor Sleep, and that was 5 or 6 years ago; could probably count the number of movies I've seen in a theater in the last 20 years on my fingers and I'd have fingers left over.
When I was a kid, I could count on finding something enjoyable at the theater every week or two. Them days is long gone. Posted by: Just Some Guy at June 17, 2025 06:09 PM (q3u5l) Harry-O was cancelled, even though the ratings were decent for....Charlies Angels.... Same here, I have seen 5 new movies in the theatres in the last 20 years....A reboot of Naked Gun? that might break the drought. Posted by: zigggggy at June 17, 2025 06:17 PM (K5Rdg) 490
No Country for Old Men? Posted by: Biff Pocoroba ============ No. It's just a movie about "there's evil and there's nothing you can do about it." That's ALL it is. It's not a great story with that extra fact in it. It was fake profundity to me, like lots of Cohen movies. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at June 17, 2025 06:17 PM (wbZPZ) 491
I like how they did a twist on that in Undiscovered Country with the Klingon quoting Shakespeare, then saying he's better in the original Klingon.
Undiscovered Country was one of the better original series movies, to my tastes. Also, Christopher Plummer as a Klingon was a treat. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at June 17, 2025 06:18 PM (EXyHK) 492
It's not just Hollywood. This is the left's take on all "fine arts." "Artists" get credit for _performing_, not for creating anything of value.
True creativity means intellectual property, and the left cannot -- must not -- recognize intellectual property. Posted by: cpurick at June 17, 2025 06:18 PM (lNjg1) 493

"I don't know if Superman will be any good. I kind of doubt it. I don't think I'll wind up seeing it."
Rants about the direction of superhero movies have taken but won't even bother going to see a film attempting something different. Say what you will about the nerds but give them superman cussing and ripping heads of and they'll actually go see it. Like if you aren't going to put your money down, why should your opinion matter more than the people who actually want to be entertained. Personally I don't think super heroes, or comics are just for adults or kids. They are simply storied and should be dialed down to match the intended audience. I don't think Blade would have been a better movie if it aimed for a more child friendly tone and I don't think LOTR would be better if it had GOT gore and nudity. Knowing your audience and playing to their expectations is a whole lot more productive than this old man yells at clouds routine. Posted by: Jack Krevin at June 17, 2025 06:25 PM (7dwIB) 499
>The original Superman was kid-friendly, but it was very well done.
The 1978 Superman was two movies smashed into one: a Superman version of the 1966 Batman TV show, and Mario Puzo going balls-to-the-wall with a Superman-as-Christ allegory. Top it all off with some award-winning special effects. The seams between the two movies are rough and obvious, but neither one would have succeeded on its own. Another oddball series is the Ayes of Texas where some crippled vets are hired by a billionaire to refit the old Texas battleship to defeat the Russian fleet in Houston Harbor. They even secede from the Union.
