Minor Appreciations of Civilization

Well, it's been a while since I posted, with some life complications along the way. I had open heart surgery a while ago. I still can't drive and some of our household equipment and parts of automotive equipment have decided to die. Then on Thursday, hubby fell among cut-throats in an operating room. Things are a little better now but don't expect great thoughts today.

Thanks to our wonderful COBS and to all of you in The Horde. I've missed you!

We are blessed by family and friends, too.

Anyway, there's a lot going on in California and the world right now, but sometimes the larger culture seems less important than at other times. There's only so much you can pay attention to at one time these days.

I'm kind of happy that there are people who pay attention to the "larger" culture. Long-term trends in culture affect the daily (it seems) changes which dominate the news these days.

But my mind hasn't been much on the development of ancient culture lately. Forget the riots and other stupidities of a moment. There are people out there who don't pay much attention to them. Sometimes we count on these people, even the ones we don't know.

I have noticed some things about people that I might not otherwise notice, during our health challenges. Like people who work in the hospital system. Some of them are mediocre, but there are many who are very good at their jobs, even if their jobs are rather limited. They may do mundane things that keep a hospital system going, like patient transport, for example. They seem to prepare appropriately for their work days. I noticed that smart phones were not too evident in their work lives. They aren't making a big splash in the world, but they are making a difference in lives by being competent in the jobs they have chosen. They meet real people. Several I met treated their charges appropriately at all times.

No fame for connection to the Beach Boys. That's okay with me.

There are other limitations to our everyday culture, too. The people at the nurse's station where it was possible to reach my hubby after surgery had a hard time informing me when he was to be discharged after doctor rounds, or even when doctor rounds would be. This information was not in their typical mode of communication. But they did inform our designated driver!

Our designated driver had her own challenges the same day, when it took her an hour and a half to get blood drawn. The person who drew her blood wanted to talk, for one thing. Perhaps she was bored. None of this had anything to do with political conflict, and it did not seem to be affected by notable societal trends.

What directions do you see education pushing everyday civilization, beyond politics? Any adventures with stranger interactions which have affected your life recently?

I have been grateful lately for ordinary people who hang onto civilized behavior even when we don't see it much in the news.

11 So glad to have you back, KT. We missed you! I hope both you and your husband recover fully and quickly.

My husband had bypass surgery at a specialty heart hospital in 2019 and we were both impressed with the friendliness, professionalism, and competence of all of the staff, top to bottom. I hope it's still as true in 2025.

The food not so much. No flavor and way, way, too many carbohydrates. He was so glad to get back home and, even though he didn't have a lot of appetite at first, he was glad to eat things that tasted good again.

20 My own experience of being a visitor during my son's hospitalization, I saw both the good and the bad.

Yes, there are dedicated staff who work tirelessly to keep patients and their loved ones as healthy and informed as possible.

Unfortunately though, when mediocrity manifests, it can be fatal. I chose not to go down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out why my son died. He did, and that's all there is to it. I will be forever grateful for the kind and professional staff we encountered.

The others though... like I said, I choose not to put thought to it.

My parents, especially my late mother, always got amazing care in our part of Canada.

Aside from the years I was stressed out because she was unjabbed. And the constant pushing for end of life stuff by the doctors which ended a while ago.

But aside from that.....great care.

I see myself as living in a duality. My day to day, both the work I do and the people I otherwise encounter, I can see the value of living a life of simple gratitude and kindness.

The larger world though, encroaches. And maybe I can't do anything about it, but I see the evil being perpetrated, and find it hard not to be pessimistic about where we're headed.

When it all collapses, those good people I try to surround myself with, will die along with the bad.

With my dad's recent hospitalization, we had a family member there almost every waking hour. The passivity of the care kinda freaked us out. I have a lot of experience with hospital care with hubby and son, and have seem a wide variety of quality. However, something was broken in 2020 - maybe with covid and then the big DEI push. Something's changed

This may sound silly, but one thing I was happy about today was in coming back from the store in an area that passes through a nature preserve . I yelled out "There's a turtle crossing the road!" and spouse managed not to hit it, and a kind man on the other side of the road stopped and moved it completely off to the side. I was happy he did that. I love turtles (Well, not big old snapping turtles the size of pizza pie plates) and this one looked like it might have been a painted turtle. Must be mating season or they're laying eggs.

2. Knowledge level and skills of lower level nursing personnel (medical assistants, nurse's aides, LPNs technicians) are dwindling.

3. Data collected with poor technique (e.g. blood pressure, weight, etc.) entered into the medical record and treated as accurate. I.e. lots of people labeled as hypertensive who aren't, and such like.

A lot of parading for that. I didin't go to the parade that was in town (Clinton had review stands built for that). I think it was more elike a typical big city 'hometown' parade with HS bands, floats, veteran groups, etc.
I had to do the separate military parade. I think he had litterally every single member of the military on Oahu march past his review stand including Coast Guard and NOAA. Literally an all fucking tropical day in the sun production for those in the parade.

I had a blood draw about 6 months ago. Afterwards, I kept feeling a sharp pain inside my arm, around the site. This went on for a couple months, and now the OUTSIDE of my elbow has some pain.

Pain level is low, maybe a 2-3, but I suspect it was related to the blood draw.

Am I crazy?

My blood pressure runs 20 pts high being in their presence.

Had a PA I did like (her demeanor and looks) talk me down to almost normal BP after the more typical staff was giving me shit about high BP that day. She pointed out a lot of people have elevated BP when visiting the Dr, everybody knows it, and nobody wants to admit the bulk of the problem is that most staff are rude condescending A-holes... She also had me come in with my cheap CVS BP thing to compare to the clinics precision old school BP meters. Almost dead on.

When she left that clinic, so did I.

Back of the hand is never pleasant. I have zero problems or discomfort with getting an IV or giving blood but I beg not to get it on the back of the hand if not necessary. They tell me that back of the hand is preferable for surgeries as it's more secure. I don't know if that's accurate.

Yeah. I've donated lots of blood so I'm not needle-shy, but that was one miserable experience. Normally, the veins on the back of my hand are pretty prominent, but after 24 hours of dehydrating mixtures, they were pretty flat that day.

165 I had brain surgery (a craniotomy) nearly 30 years ago. During prep for the procedure the nurse tried to start an IV… multiple (painful) jabs with no success. Brain surgery is stressful so I was on edge; I finally told her you have one more chance but I’ll punch you in the nose if you miss again (half joking… sorta). She got the anesthesiologist and he was a magician… put that thing in with no pain in like 5 seconds. Always have an anesthesiologist start your IV

It never came to fruition.

This No Kings Day reminds me of that. I think they want some (several? many?) of the sites to have an incident of violence, or counterprotests or radicals to bust out. Perhaps sparking a wider conflagration.

340 Dimona is home to Israel’s highly secretive nuclear facility, officially called the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center.

It’s not listed in any tourist brochure, and for good reason - it’s long believed to be where Israel developed and maintains its undeclared nuclear arsenal.

Israel has never confirmed having nukes, but the global consensus? It does. A lot.

342 Dimona's been targeted before. There's always luck, but Israel heavily defends that facility. In any case doesn't change the situation. Iranian sites will be hammered until desired damage level is reached, most likely, they're essentially defenseless now. Will not be shocked if some interesting action a la the raid on the Syrian underground site is seen (well, not seen, at least right away).

Not the remotest chance of "global war". Iran was already very weak conventionally, and has no allies. Russia and China have never/never would/can't really lift a finger to defend them. Iran is just a $ proposition for Chy-nah, and actually the just a tool for Russian vandalism on the world scene (that's really Russia's only significance, for many years now), and an opportunistic toe-hold in an important region where they've not had much sway for decades.

As for exile, hard to see where the Iranian scum might go. Doubt they'd be welcome in Moscow - where religious nutcase theocrats are not really viewed favorably. Qatar? That's the thing, reviewing possible exile destinations for the mullahs nicely outlines how isolated that regime is.
