Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Case For Military Parades [Diogenes]There is growing opposition to this weekend’s Army Birthday Parade…ordered by President Trump. Apparently because he ordered it, his opposition is finding all kinds of excuses to complain about it. It costs too much, it disrupts soldiers’ holiday weekend, it’s really about Trump as it is his birthday too. Hogwash. These people are wrong. Here’s why. America needs this parade and frankly it needs more of them. Today’s military is drawn from a remarkably small percentage of the American public. Only about 1% of Americans are currently serving and only about 6% identify as Veterans. The result of this is an America that does not identify with the military, cannot understand what it does, and, sadly, many just don’t care. Whatever they need to know about the military, Hollywood will teach them. Parades can change this. It is an opportunity for thousands of citizens to see what an artillery piece looks like, what a tank sounds like, and what an MRAP looks like in the street. It allows citizens to see soldiers marching, looking sharp and standing tall. America meet your Army. It is a training opportunity. The President gave an order. It will be carried out. Staffs begin planning. Units are alerted to begin preparations to participate. They will need to plan for travel, shipping of the vehicles, feeding, housing, and care of the troops. They will need to plan for time to set up, rehearse, and inspect. They will need spare parts for maintenance, special training for specific units, and leaders need time to check each soldier involved. In short, deploying to a parade in Washington DC (or anywhere else) is not that different from deploying to, say, the National Training Center for a month of training. It is just another mission to accomplish. Further, it isn’t an excessive cost. The troops are going to be doing many of these things anyway, whether on their Post or in the field. They will still get paid. They will still eat. They will still have a place to sleep. Leaders will still be checking their soldiers. Maintenance expenses are factored into annual training forecasts. The only real delta in the budget is travel and that isn’t a huge cost, given the payoff. In short, the majority of the budget for the parade is sunk cost. But there is a huge upside. Yes, troops will bitch about this stuff. It will be a couple of weeks of hurry up and wait. Multiple inspections, spot corrections, last minute changes, and boredom. But when the marching begins, most troops stand a bit straighter and take pride in their units. The soldiers I knew who did a major parade like this were in the DC parade after Desert Storm. All of them told me it was a real pain in the butt. But they also said that afterwards they were very glad to be a part of it. “Sir, it was a huge party!” Children coming up and giving a soldier a bouquet of flowers, strangers shaking their hands, hundreds of civilians saying thank you, and best of all, they never had to buy their own drinks. Lastly, a parade is a huge recruiting event. When I commanded a Recruiting Company, any time I could get some equipment into a high school or a local civic event, I did so. The results were always positive and some were incredible. America needs to renew its acquaintance with its soldiers. And soldiers need to see who it is they are fighting for. We cannot let this bond be broken.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I was there for that celebration. There were tanks and planes on the Mall, with soldiers atop them. I guarantee you those men will never again have a feeling of pride that intense. Military parades go back at least 3,000 years for a reason.
A country that so hates its military that it refuses to parade is near the end of its life cycle. It's interesting that Timmeh Walz can only associate this with North Korea given that National Guard units regularly participate in parades. Michigan - just across the lake, maybe he heard of it - has an annual Pass in Review this time each year where a few thousand troops form up and then march around a field and do the old fashioned roll call for the governor and various dignitaries. It's boring as hell, but still kind of cool to see each unit get announced and the crowds cheer for them as they salute the podium. (I marched in 2022 with the Air Guard component, which always gets big shouts because so few of us show up.) And yes, having the military in the community is part of the American ideal. Walz's vision - if it even is one - is of troops hiding in their barracks or doing TDY or whatnot, but never marching proudly down Main Street. It's bizarre, but then again, we need to remember that the bulk of his career was during the grim 1990s with tight budgets, low recruitment and so anyone who stuck around got promoted Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Posted by: San Franpsycho at June 14, 2025 09:49 AM (RIvkX) --- At its core, a peacetime draft is unAmerican. When the Cold War ended, we should have disbanded CIA and the three-letter agencies, cut the Active Duty Army to 200,000 troops, consisting a rapid-deployment corps-sized element, garrisons and administrative/cadre units. Then ramp the Guard up to 1 million troops, who would meet recruitment because it's community-oriented. Instead we kept am active duty force just large enough to piss away in nation-building and then had to start drawing on Guard units to bridge the readiness gap, causing recruiting woes on both ends. Despite being a blue state Rhode Island has very strong ties to the military dating back to the Revolution. During WWII, much of the state was bascially Navy bases including most of my town. Almost every PT Boat skipper was trained here and before moving to its permanent home in Annapolis the original home of the Naval Academy was in Newport. The two parks I take Elvis for a walk are both former military installations, one dating back to Revolutionary times.
Even today between the Newport Naval Base, the Naval War College and the remains of Quonset Naval Air Station where they still train RI National Guard and build submarines the ties are strong. They think associating Trump with a revitalized, patriotic military carries shades of Hitler, but it actually reminds us of leaders like Reagan, Eisenhower, and Washington. I think the parade marking the 250th birthday of the US Army and flag day is what this country needs. Let's reestablish pride in our military. Not gay butt-sex pride (pride month et al), but actual honorable pride. Plus, we get to see the power and might of our armed forces. Who doesn't want to see the hardware we use to blow stuff up? Well, besides our enemies and that's usually because the are looking down the dangerous end.

When this is a twice yearly thing as it was in the USSR, we’ll talk. I have no problem with this parade. And we could use two more this year: on October 13 and November 10 (for the USN and USMC). These events are rare in this country and this is a great chance for the military to show the people it defends the hardware and people the taxes go to pay for. “America needs this parade and frankly it needs more of them. Today’s military is drawn from a remarkably small percentage of the American public. Only about 1% of Americans are currently serving and only about 6% identify as Veterans.”
Another bit of food for thought: of those veterans, and those currently in right now, how many are doing so because it is the family business? I went in due to no small part of the fact that my father was in the Army. (Back in the day Ramstein AB and Rhein-Main AB more or less did recruiting work for free as I got to see what the AF was all about before I joined them some years later.) When this is a twice yearly thing as it was in the USSR, we’ll talk. I have no problem with this parade. And we could use two more this year: on October 13 and November 10 (for the USN and USMC). These events are rare in this country and this is a great chance for the military to show the people it defends the hardware and people the taxes go to pay for. And it just might help with recruitment.

3rd world dictators and soviets before them have military parades to show off how big and tough their military is. It’s gay and retarded. Because if you truly have a strong military you don’t need a parade to let the world know how powerful it is. It’s like a smart person doesn’t have to tell you he’s smart. You just know.
Is Trump doing this? No. I think he genuinely wanted to do this to celebrate the Army’s history. However it also comes across as “look how tough we are”. When I first heard about it that was my first reaction, without even knowing it was his birthday (which is a realllly retarded reason to oppose it by the way). That’s why I’m not super happy with it. This US Army celebration, parade, whatever isn't some "massive," day long pornographic display of American firepower. It's got about the same number of participants as a typical Army "command change" ceremony. I doubt there's over 100 pieces of military kit like tanks, APC's, etc.

Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at June 14, 2025 10:54 AM (YTjJV) --- This is where you are wrong. The Soviets and dictators didn't invent these parades, they were *imitating* the ones held in civilized nations, like the United States. The parades were an effort to look legitimate, but that was because all the First World nations had them as well. At the end of the Civil War, the Grand Army of the Republic marched through Washington for three whole days. Victory parades were the norm, and on special days the troops would come out just as they are doing today. We got away from that because the counterculture reviles the military and parades make people proud of it. So the "ick" factor you have is because you (and a lot of other people) are so alienated from traditional Americana that you actually associate it with Idi Amin rather than George Washington. You have it precisely backwards. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at June 14, 2025 11:10 AM (ZOv7s) 244

So the "ick" factor you have is because you (and a lot of other people) are so alienated from traditional Americana that you actually associate it with Idi Amin rather than George Washington. You have it precisely backwards.

No, nothing at all like J6. There were no people associated with designated foreign terrorist groups at the Capitol on J6. And as best I can tell none of them were here on a student visa which requires you to list any and all potential affiliations with enemies of the US.

I get it perfectly, Jack == If that were true you would have compared them to pro lifers who use violent means. Fire. Bombs to destroy clinics. This guy was organizing destructive acts and violence against Jewish students. I accept free speech. I do not accept violence. You really shouldn't shoot abotionists. One of the worst abotionists of all time, who by his own admission killed a small city worth of babies, converted and became one of the most effective anti abortion activists of all time. Okay. Here's a goodie I found while looking up the (Ron Silver) Rush quote:
"Rush’s monologue about Barack Obama’s interview. Do you remember what Obama bragged about being good at killing people?...I think it was in Rolling Stone where he was talking about droning people and it turned out he was really good at this." Saw both the Sunset Parade and the Evening Parade while I was stationed in DC. After both parades the Marines mingled with the crowd. I saw lot of numbers being given to the Marines. So yeah, they'll bitch about all the build up, but the pay off is worth it

VJ Day
Renamed "End of War in the Pacific Day" by Bill Clinton for the 50th Anniversary Parade in Hawaii. A lot of parading for that. I didin't go to the parade that was in town (Clinton had review stands built for that). I think it was more elike a typical big city 'hometown' parade with HS bands, floats, veteran groups, etc. I had to do the separate military parade. I think he had litterally every single member of the military on Oahu march past his review stand including Coast Guard and NOAA. Literally an all fucking tropical day in the sun production for those in the parade. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at June 14, 2025 12:14 PM (/lPRQ) 296
The reason I lean to it is a political hit by someone on the 'Right' is that it was competently planned. I always feared that multiple star chambers is how the the 'Right' would eventually respond to the Left's actions.
I would not rule out a Reichstag scenario either. Admittedly my comments are just internet conjecture . Posted by: polynikes at June 14, 2025 12:18 PM (VofaG) 297

The one military parade I've seen was memorable for reasons other than the bands and the marching. The parade was for Armed Forces Day, and it was in Chicago in 1978. The guest of honor on the reviewing stand was the first lady, Rosalyn Carter. Standing beside her was the Chicago Democrat who organized the parade, a fellow named John Wayne Gacy. Interesting times.
