"Dumb Slow " ( ie "Bright Speed) has died completely and we get to pay $20.00 a month to get an upgrade from something to something else. Thanks for paying attention to this highly technical immediate t 😉 FenSpouse on a break between bus runs had to talk to the customer service lady. I was complaining yesterday that English was clearly her second language , but it did make me laugh when she said, "I am in silence here doing my work" which sounds like some sort of Eastern meditative practice and spouse and I got some humor from politically incorrect language ( sorry!) from saying -and imagine some Indian accent here -"I am in silence here doing my work, to try to explain the mysteries of internet connection to you stupid American dolts" and such like comments . It reminded me of the movie with the Beatles where some European English actor plays an Indian.

"giggity giggity" is a verbal tick of a character, Glenn Quagmire, in "Family Guy" Glenn Quagmire, who is usually referred to by his surname, is a fictional character from the American adult animated sitcom Family Guy. He is a neighbor and friend of the Griffin family and is best known for his hypersexuality and his catchphrase, "Giggity Giggity". The show's creator and voice actor Seth MacFarlane describes him as "an appalling human being who is still caught in the Rat Pack era" based on anachronistic 1950s party-animal clichés. It's the cartoon equivalent of Matthew McConaughey saying, "all right, all right, all right" when he starred as David Wooderson, another skeevy character, in the 1993 film "Dazed and Confused". Here endeth the cultural catch phrases lesson. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) Imprison! Imprison! Imprison! at June 10, 2025 06:01 AM (xG4kz) 101

I think part of the reason so many near-illiterates use "impact(ed)" instead of "affect(ed)" is that the latter got confused with "effect." Even though "effect" is usually a noun and "affect" is a verb. (There's a specialized use of "affect" as a noun, to mean "emotional response," but that's not part of everyday English. "Effect" can also be a verb, but it's rarer now.)
"The rainy weather affected the picnic." (Verb) "The rainy weather had an effect on the picnic." (Noun) "Impact" is also supposed to be a noun. But in the continual enverbification of English nouns, it got co-opted (from an adjective, as in "impacted wisdom tooth") to mean "affected." USAGE
The phrasal verb impact on, as in ‘when produce is lost, it always impacts on the bottom line’, has been in the language since the 1960s. Many people disapprove of it despite its relative frequency, saying that make an impact on or other equivalent wordings should be used instead. New formations of verbs from nouns (as in the case of impact) are often regarded as somehow inferior Posted by: m at June 10, 2025 06:04 AM (CQE5S) 108

I'm patiently transcribing bibliographies of legacy publications on metallocene polymerization catalysts from Word and Excel documents into EndNote. I have about 5000 of them to do and I've gotten maybe 10% of them done. I also have to get a list of articles from about 2020 to 2025 from SciFinder, but I need to fix my account with Chemical Abstract Services. Google Scholar is a big help. Copy the DOI or title into the search box and the bibliography comes up. There's a link to import the reference into EndNote, which is the work of a moment. Of course, once that's done, how do I get the publications themselves? There are a few available on Research Gate and similar repositories, and some are in open-access journals, but the great bulk of them would otherwise require purchase, at about $50 an article. Don't think that's happening. Patents, which have no copyright, are so much easier to work with. I've also purchased what I hope is a used version of ChemDraw so I can do the drawings. In my working years in Los Angeles we went from Mayor Richard Riordan, a successful businessman, highly capable executive, solid, decent Republican and charming politician to Karen Bass, an odious Communist and total managerial incompetent. Why, look. There's a pallet of cinder blocks sitting at an LA intersection. How did it get there? Prolly one of those big flatbed trucks with the forklift hanging off the back.
And when that conspicuous truck drove through the streets of LA in the wee hours of the morning it was recorded by countless cameras, some of which have license plate scanning software to identity the specific vehicle and registration. There is open source software that has been available for years that will allow you to drive through a parking lot with your phone camera capturing parked car after car after car. The OCR software is prety good for captuing the plates into processable text, and good but still improving on determining make, model, year and color of the car with that license plate. That is, the tech to do ALPR is everywhere there is a phone. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at June 10, 2025 07:15 AM (a4flb) 202

Karoline Leavitt @PressSec Jun 8 In recent days, violent mobs have attacked ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles, California. These operations are essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals into the United States. In the wake of this violence, California’s feckless Democrat leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens. That is why President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester. The Trump Administration has a zero tolerance policy for criminal behavior and violence, especially when that violence is aimed at law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs. These criminals will be arrested and swiftly brought to justice. The Commander-in-Chief will ensure the laws of the United States are executed fully and completely. Microsoft had the “Build” conference in Seattle last week (or the week before) and they had 100+ disruptions by protesters with some incoherent agenda, which they did their best to keep out of the national press.
Now comes … Microsoft has confirmed that it will no longer host its annual Build conference in Seattle starting in 2026, citing issues related to rampant homelessness, visible drug use, and urban decay. … funny they didn’t mention the local crazies.
