![]() After falling for the local undertaker, a Brazilian woman spent two years attending funerals in her community in hopes of catching the man’s eye. Daniela Signor and Apollo Scariot surprised a lot of people when they arrived at their wedding venue in a funeral hearse, but to those who knew their unusual love story, the choice made perfect sense. Daniela first laid eyes on Apollo in early 2023, while attending the funeral service of a deceased relative, and immediately knew she had to do everything she could to draw his attention. He was the funeral director and seemed to be too focused on his job to notice her, but she didn’t let that discourage her. Every three months or so, she would attend funerals in her community just to see Apollo and hopefully get seen by him. It took a while, but her strategy actually worked. *** It took a while, but Daniela caught Apollo’s eye at some point, and after dating for a while, the two tied the knot last month. They arrived in a hearse because it just fitted their story so well, but they made sure to explain it to everyone. “Everyone at the wedding was shocked, but during our vows, we explained everything – we read out our story,” Daniela said. “Then people understood why I arrived in the hearse.”Gotta respect the effort. She saw what she wanted, and she got it! More at the link including a video and a Facebook post. Might need a translator. *** Maybe related, maybe not Looks like the young lady is smitten! I spent this last weekend at a fire-ranger style three story "off grid" cabin just north of Broken Bow, OK called "Phoenix Rising". The bedroom is above the tree canopy on top of the mountain and the windows are uninterrupted around the perimeter. The past two nights were some of the most spectacular heavenly laser-light-show in full surround. Can see for miles and miles 360 degrees. Sat outside on the balcony with the perfect breeze watching the storms come in and pass by to the north and south, and then directly overhead. I'm still in awe. Anyway, being an old man with a bad back, it takes me longer to enter or exit a vehicle than, say, Bo and Luke Duke. In the three or four minutes it took, at least four separate customers entered none of whom will ever see the sunny side of 60 ever again and no one below 60 entered. That's right. Seaside is where the vacationing Portlander went to the coast if one were not so classy as to go to Cannon Beach and the beach by Haystack rock. I have pictures of my mother's family hanging out at the beach by Haystack rock by the way. Posted by: Kindltot at June 08, 2025 10:31 PM (D7oie) 111

Retro vibes, swim skirts and swim shorts, which is a refreshing change from the micro bottoms that have been trending recently.
I suppose it's in part a reflection of being 29, but I really prefer the more modest suits to the barely-there whorewear that I see all to frequently at the beach. I think it's also the case that very, very few women look good in the latter. There is a public policy reason for making a father responsible for his child, no matter the circumstances of the birth. The mother in these cases has primary care; but if something happens to her (death or unfitness) then the responsibility for caring for the child would fall on the State. The State says “wait a minute! If there’s a living parent, no matter the circumstances, then that parent gets the bill before we do!”
That isn’t a matter of justice and has nothing to do with fairness; it’s just a public policy decision to lower the burden on the State. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 08, 2025 11:01 PM (3tIsI) Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 08, 2025 11:02 PM (QnmlO) 207

I just stumbled across something interesting: Missing Stars. Comparisons of older sky surveys from about 70 years ago vs modern one have found ~100 stars, most of them in the Milky Way with a few in the Magellanic Clouds that have just disappeared with no explanation. And they've found some stellar looking objects that have just appeared over the same comparison. It's an open question about what's going, with all sorts of theories. Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The Russians tried to return the bodies of 6000 KIA. The Ukrainians refused to accept them. Internet speculation is that accepting the bodies would force the Ukrainians to pay compensation to the dead soldiers' families, and thus bankrupt the Government. This doesn't seem plausible, seeing how hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian troops have already died. Be it as it may, this is supposedly adversely affecting morale in units that are being fed into the meat grinder. 2. The US diverted a bunch of anti aircraft missiles, which were scheduled to go to Ukraine, to instead protect US forces in the Middle Easy. Zelensky is not happy. 3. The first Russians have crossed into Dnipro oblast, which is a very big deal, as this is territory which they had not previously claimed. They tried to portray morals and tradition as prudish and oppressive, but it turns out those societal mores were holding everything together. Definitely not perfect, but several thousand years experience clearly showed what worked and what didn’t. I suppose Penicillin G was about as consequential as “the Pill” or concurrent.
Financially speaking, at the individual level and at the community level, Marriage meant that males could not have multiple women, and must remain true - one life, one wife - and, must support any issue that results from said conjugation. By the same token he was not responsible for children that weren’t his. The spook agencies worked very quickly in the post world war era to blow all this up. The judiciary, education, and other infiltrated institutions and the usual suspects all played their roles. There is almost zero incentive for a modern male to get married, it is a veritable minefield, and purposefully made so. Posted by: Common Tater at June 08, 2025 11:45 PM (z1t++) 346

Don't think it's "hundreds of thousands" of Uke KIA. Estimates by best anti-Uke types below 100K, last I saw. This doesn't affect the factors in that bizarre situation where Ukeistan refusing to take 6K bodies back.
Another reported agreement in Istanbul was to return seriously wounded POWs, and to work out procedures for temp/local ceasefires to recover KIA in the field. Don't know if those have gone anywhere. As Idaho Spud noted, Russian ground forces went beyond administrative boundary of Donetsk oblast (DNR) last few days, for first time. "Big red arrows" on the map, huge breakthroughs and line collapses, still seem unlikely. But the Russian glacier keeps grinding forward, mostly. Up north it's more mixed, but it's all taking place on Uke home-court, thanks to their stupid incursion into Kursk. Posted by: rhomboid at June 08, 2025 11:54 PM (1m82a) 368

Ukraine have a population of around 40M. They've got less then a million deployed. Generally a country can deploy around 10% of their population in a major war. So you'd expect the Ukes to be deploying 4X as many troops as they are. Well...except for the fact the US is providing more money then their peace time economy produced, which means they could in theory deploy all their fighting age men - the USSR wasn't quite as lavishly funded in WWII, but they got over 30%. So if the Ukes should have between 4 and 12 million men in the field, where are the "missing" 3M+? Some are fighting for the Russians, though as far as I can tell western sources put that as less then 100K. So where are these millions of missing men...if they aren't casualties? See how that works? It’s not safe! “We can’t do our job unless it’s safe”. Clearly something has been lost in the translation, on just WTF it is that law enforcement is for.
The government has been very, very clear it is under to obligations to protect any individual citizen - there have been a number of court cases to that effect. The irony of the government finding that the government is blameless when something bad happens is always amusing of course. And the CHAZ people got to see this in spades where all the police dispatchers were allowed to do was give people advice when they were being attacked because the police weren't allowed to go there due to the "danger". Which is...absurd. Posted by: 18-1 at June 09, 2025 12:26 AM (t0Rmr) 438

So if the Ukes should have between 4 and 12 million men in the field, where are the "missing" 3M+?
Some are fighting for the Russians, though as far as I can tell western sources put that as less then 100K. So where are these millions of missing men...if they aren't casualties? Posted by: 18-1 at June 09, 2025 12:19 AM (t0Rmr) Some have fled, but you also have to remember Ukraine’s weird conscription policies. They weren’t conscripting those under 25.. I think they still haven’t started. And there’s lots of videos of 40-somethings being kidnapped and showing up on the frontline. That said, Russia’s deployed even fewer troops, which seems odd for such a big country. But it also makes it obvious the Ukie and NATO estimates of nearly 1 million Russian casualties can’t be even close to true. My kid went up to Long Beach today for scuba training. (Boat travels out to Catalina for the actual scuba work.) Boat left Long Beach around 8 am, came back to the dock around 5:30 pm. Paramount neighborhood, about 5-10 miles north of there, has been the center of the 'insurrection.' No evidence of riot in Long Beach. No effect on traffic. The uprising could have been on Mars. That said, Russia’s deployed even fewer troops, which seems odd for such a big country.
Vlad's problems are different then Lil Z's. Vlad has to make the war a small thing for most of the Russian populace - like the WoT for the US. If he makes it look like WWII he might have internal problems. He's got most of the land he wants, so he needs an army large enough to hold that and no more. Sure there is a risk if he underestimates but...a risk if he overestimates too Lil Z though, at least prior to Trump, only had to appease the war supporters in the EU and US. The best way to do that is having large forces on the field able to push back the Russians. One would assume the only gate on fielding that four million man army would be getting them basic training with western uniforms, western guns, and eating western food - so he could not field them all in 2022, but should have been able to by late 2023 - unless those men are causalities/fled in the mean time. I took a look on the estimates of the number of US draft dodgers in the Vietnam war - looks like the estimates are 30-100K fled to Canada.
I can't find any sources on who paid for them to be in Canada though - some mention local charities, but you'd need bigger players for that many people, either the Canuck government, wealthy Americans, or Soviet controlled NGOs. But with potential Uke draft dodgers who would be paying for them to live in Poland or Romania? I don't think Russian aligned NGOs would be allowed there, and I don't think the US or EU would pay for it either. And Ukraine is a very poor country - its not older Ukes could afford to pay for their relatives to live abroad either. Posted by: 18-1 at June 09, 2025 12:41 AM (t0Rmr) 471

Law enforcement can’t be expected to provide me 24/7 bodyguards, and park a cruiser in front of my house. They don’t have the resources for that. Let them just ride the superrotational winds. They'd circle the planet in ~4 days, ~30 mile hight, giving you a 4 day day/night cycle. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at June 09, 2025 01:00 AM (TWzUj) My understanding: - Trump is using Federal troops to protect Federal property from insurrectionists. Presumably they will be used in future ICE raids. If Trump is smart, he’ll keep the ICE raids going in spite of the insurrection. - CA gov’t is encouraging insurrectionists. - Rioting is mostly a local issue, for now. With Federal property and ICE secured, Trump has less latitude in putting down the riots himself. He may, but responsibility for public order mostly falls on state/local gov’t. - I haven’t seen any indication LAPD is being ordered to actively stop ICE, which would be a major escalation. Mostly they’re just ordered not to help. For the most part that’s legal. Posted by: Donald J. Trump at June 09, 2025 01:18 AM (l3YAf) 517
That's an interesting philosophical question.. Are you patriotically required to fight in a war simply because your country is in it? Even if there is no actual realistic potential danger to your country from the country that is being fought?

Trash out, dishes & glassware washed & put away, tables wiped off. Vacuumed, mopped. Cleaned the restrooms-- they were not that bad, considering. Hmm. I think some daywalkers finished off the Bloody Mary pitchers. Good, woulda been a shame to waste! Posted by: JQ at June 09, 2025 01:23 AM (rdVOm) 520

I’d spend my nights on the streets, hunting America’s true enemies: hippies and liberals. I might take a detour to Havana and assassinate Castro. I’d claim his legendary beard as my trophy. Another section of the Insurrection Act: The President, by using the militia or the armed forces, or both, or by any other means, shall take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy, if it— (1) so hinders the execution of the laws of that State, and of the United States within the State, that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law, and the constituted authorities of that State are unable, fail, or refuse to protect that right, privilege, or immunity, or to give that protection; or (2) opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws. Well, if the fools want to burn their city down, let them.
As long as they know they are going to have to build it back on their own dime. Not federal money. Let's see how many of your protesters kick in. Of course California could raise the cost of gasoline $5 a gallon to help out with rebuilding. Posted by: Case at June 09, 2025 01:29 AM (kDs7V) 528
That section is distinct from the previous section, thus:
Whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion against the authority of the United States, make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any State by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, he may call into Federal service such of the militia of any State, and use such of the armed forces, as he considers necessary to enforce those laws or to suppress the rebellion. The second one, Sec. 252 is about rebellion/insurrection against federal authority. The first one, Sec. 253, is about when there's a total breakdown of law and order, and the state and local officials are unable or unwilling to restore order. Note the "shall" wording. That implies the President is required by law to restore order. Sitting back and allowing some locality in the United States to descend into anarchy is not an option. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 09, 2025 01:29 AM (w6EFb) Yes, but 1 is definitely less well-established legally. What constitutes deprivation of a right, privilege, immunity, etc.? Stare laws restricting firearm ownership are unconstitutional, but I don’t foresee Trump calling out the Marines to end every state-level gun law. Would be cool if he did. Enforcing Federal law using the military if needed is better defined. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at June 09, 2025 01:35 AM (l3YAf) 534

“Shall... as he deems necessary…” Pretty flexible wording. I’m not saying the President shouldn’t do something; I’m very anti-rioter. But Trump is taking the very safe, conservative path as things play out. And it’s early yet. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at June 09, 2025 01:43 AM (l3YAf) 536

Apropos of nothing, I suppose, but the writer/poet Dorothy Parker is supposed to have written: Los Angeles - 72 suburbs in search of a city..
Which is mostly true, and all those suburbs - individual cities actually - have their own city governments and police, though some contract with with the L.A. County sheriff or LAPD for police protection. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at June 09, 2025 01:45 AM (QGaXH) 538

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 09, 2025 01:43 AM (w6EFb) Right, but Ike was enforcing Federal law. It was a SCOTUS ruling. He wasn’t thrilled with that decision. He was fine with ending segregation, but thought the responsibility lay with Congress, not Federal judges. He didn’t like the idea of using Federal troops to enforce a SCOTUS ruling, so he gave Congress time to act and provide a structure for desegregation. Congress ducked the issue, of course, lol. Thor went to Catholic school K-8 in Paramount. He grew up in Bellflower, which is adjacent. If the rioting is only in Paramount and one section in L.A. proper, it really isn't that big of a deal.
Seems to me that whoever is behind this was hoping it would spread like the Rodney King riots did. But most native born Hispanics are not on the side of illegals, and the decent illegals don't want any part of this bullshit, either. They're either long gone or laying low. And they all gotta get up and go b to work tomorrow, regardless of legal status. These are by far mostly Soros/pantifa types, or the purely evil illegals who came in specifically to cause trouble and destabilize the country. Trump doesn't need to go ham on this, as far as mowing them all down. I'm fine with the NG being called in, and keepin things under control, but it's not time to release the kraken. What they need to start doing is placing them under Federal arrest, and detain them in a red state. I'd lpve to see them all made martyrs for their cause, but this is not as big as it seems. I used to go into that area a lot for work, visiting all the aerospace metal processors. There are some nice little neighborhoods scattered around there. Like during the Palisades and Altadena fires earlier this year, I think people just don't grasp just how vast an area 'L.A.' encompasses and how little of it is actually City of L.A. And just like after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, my out-of-state parents were quite concerned for our safety until they realized the news was showing the same burning train car and collapsed building over and over. There are rioters taking out the windows in LAPD headquarters as we speak. This is not a bunch of stupid kids doing some protest crap. This is paid foreigners taking down a city and by the LAPD Chief's own words "overrunning" the police. I don't care how big LA is, they have lost control of all of it.
