The first was for bourbon and brandy not available in the Soviet of Washington. That's another story though. The second was to visit Bell Pipe and Cigar. A very pleasant shop with a nice humidor and pleasant employees. I bought three each of the river series by Big Sky Cigar Company. Named for four of the best fly-fishing streams in the state. All four are very well made in either Nicaragua or the Dominican Republic. Madison and Big Horn are upper mild to low medium in strength. Bitterroot is a solid medium to upper end medium. Blackfoot is an upper medium to mid full bodied. All four are Toro sized with varying ting sizes. Taste runs with coffee, pepper and chocolate. Tasty is my best description. Went back to the range today for my second women's shooting class (last month was my first time shooting in 40 years.) Today, besides safety, we worked on grip and stance, and shot at cardboard targets at 10 yards again. We also shot at steel targets, which I had never done. We used one dummy round in a magazine to practice responding to a round that didn't fire. And finally we shot at clay targets at 60 yards. It was a lot of fun and I plan to go next month, the only bad part was that it is 95 degrees today. Last time I had trouble racking the slide (an older and not very strong) so I got a hand exerciser from Amazon to improve my grip strength and it was easier this time.

Attendees this year were CBD, RMBS and his friend and myself. Weasel unfortunately was not able to attend this year and he was missed. Thankfully we were able to persevere without his spotting skills. The weather that was forecast for that day did not show up until all the fun was done and we were back at the hotel. The highlight of the trip was that 4 of the 5 attendees were able to ring steel at 1,106 yards. Yep, you read that correctly, One Thousand One Hundred and Six yards. Only RMBS's friend did not make it that far. But we were able to get him to ring steel at I believe was 875 yards. Fun was had by all Posted by: Scuba_Dude at June 08, 2025 07:20 PM (CSqhN) 50

sra blaster and I are back from the range today. Still working the Kimber CDS9.
I have a problem. Well 2 problems. One is that the gun is zeored with a dot. As zeroed as zero can be. From the benchrest it will put 2 out of 3 rounds in the exact same hole. NEXT: standing up and shooting. Here is where you introduce human error. I got it figured out and am dead on with the dot. sra blaster, at the same distance, is shooting 4-6 inches lower. Tis a puzzlement. She got pretty frustrated with it and then she pulled out her P365 and nailed the bullseye consistently at 7 yards with irons (usually beyond 5 her shooting gets a bit erratic with the P365 but it was dead on). Then I had her shoot my P365XL with a dot and she shot better than the Kimber but not as well as with irons on the P365. Here is the thing - standing behind her with the Kimber I can see that it is pointed low - she says the dot is on the target. Problem one is that she can't shoot this gun with this dot. The second problem is I need to figure out how to tell her that she has the problem not the gun. (We are going with something with her glasses right now.) So, range report: frantic edition. Last week started with the arrival of the rest of the parts for my new rifle. Originally, I was looking at building a 6.5 x 284 Norma, just accepting there would be nothing resembling barrel life.
But, as I was looking through a reloading manual, I ran across the 6.5-06. Say what? Turns out, someone back when had necked up a 25-06 to .264. (6.5mm) I started looking at the numbers and thought, "Hmm, this sounds like fun." As I looked even further, I realized I only need to change out the neck bushing and mandrel in my resizing die. Even better, case length, shoulder, etc are the same as the 30-06. But, with the shooting commitments I had coming up, I felt a bit of pressure getting the rifle assembled and load worked out. Yeah, I go from a regular cartridge which is reloaded a lot to a wildcat I have to resize brass for in order to get ammo. I decided to neck up the brass rather than try necking down 30-06 brass due to concerns about neck wall thickness. /fin part 1 Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at June 08, 2025 07:34 PM (tT6L1) 80

Posted by: Weasel at June 08, 2025 07:24 PM (i67OH) Oh yes...but it was a strangely made AR-10 bolt that was wobbly! I have an AR-10 that I bought when Biden was elected, because I thought that it would be banned quickly. No problems with it, and it is quite accurate too! Well, until Texas two years ago, when it just stopped ejecting. Instead it jammed the empty into the receiver and I had to use a cleaning rod to get it out. Weird, so when I got home I stripped the bolt and cleaned and lubed it. Everything worked fine at my next range visit, so what the hell? Fast forward two years with no problems, and I put a new scope on it, so I took it to the range to zero. I stripped it to clean, reassembled the rifle, and headed to RI Red's wonderful neck of the woods to do some long distance shooting. One round through it to check velocity, and boom! The spent case was jammed into the receiver! Part 2...anon Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo (with a beret and a Gauloises) at June 08, 2025 07:36 PM (mWSu4) 82

sra blaster is determined to find the problem. So we got home put up a target down the hall and put the boresight laser in.
I had it dot over dot at the length of the hall, and then had her try it. We were expecting that she was going to see the dot somewhat below the target bullseye. But, no, it was dead on. How is it that she is looking through the dot correctly here but not there? Dunno. But I pulled the dot and reinstalled the plate with the rear sights. After much cursing and another attempt with the same result, RI Red stripped the bolt and discovered a very strange manufacturing choice.
The bolt cam pin hole that is eccentric on one side of the bolt on every other AR known to man, actually was the same shape on both sides, so I had a 50% chance of assembling the bolt 180 degrees off, so the the ejector would push the spent round into the receiver rather than out the ejection port! My only explanation was that they built the bolts for both LH and RH receivers. Other than that...I got nothin! In other news the decades long illegal alien invasion, celebrated with primarily Mexican flags being displayed, has become a violent insurrection in LA. Various politicians, including Gov. Newsom, LA Mayor Bass, Congresswoman Maxine "The Wig" Waters, are openly supporting the insurrection. A Redditt commenter about all this summed it up with "US government waging war against its own people." This is not a surprising take; even CNN has started to refer to these non-citizens as undocumented citizens. Latest Turkish 1911 clone got delivered to the gun shop and I picked it up on Wednesday. Haven't gotten a chance to shoot it, but hope to get to the local shooting spot tomorrow.
It is a Tisas brand "Duty" model, 5 inch barrel, steel frame, fixed sights. What caught my eye was all the features that would have cost me, not so long ago, a couple of paychecks to have put on it. Long trigger. Flared ejection port. Fiber optic (dovetailed) front sight. Ambi thumb safety. Beavertail grip safety with memory bump. Beveled mag well. Flat checkered mainspring housing. Checkered wood grips. Checkered front strap! I've said it before. Grab these Turkish clones while you can. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 08, 2025 07:46 PM (d1dHP) 99

I’m sure the cam pin hole on every military AR is eccentric on one side, because Private Snuffy WILL do it backwards. And ejecting the case to the right causes a major jam. Hard to believe a major manufacturer would build a reversible bolt. But CBD did find it. Later in the day his socks weren’t so tight and he went long and strong. Anyway, I went on to get a decent chamber measurement, which was somewhat of a process and worked up a mid power load suitable for zeroing the scope. Got that done, did a ladder test, found the accuracy node and moved on from there. (thanks for the for the ladder test guidance, weasel.)
After everything was said and done, I wound up taking a second place in the club match yesterday. Considering I barely had the rifle zeroed to the round and really didn't have decent dope for the distances I did okay. First blush, the rifle appears to be very accurate. Fun Fact: Neptunium melts at 639 ± 3 °C: this low melting point, a property the metal shares with the neighboring element plutonium (which has melting point 639.4 °C), is due to the hybridization of the 5f and 6d orbitals and the formation of directional bonds in the metal.
The boiling point of neptunium is not empirically known and the usually given value of 4174 °C is extrapolated from the vapor pressure of the element. If accurate, this would give neptunium the largest liquid range of any element (3535 K passes between its melting and boiling points). Posted by: Wesley Crusher at June 08, 2025 08:39 PM (0sNs1) 150

Did get some range time in this week. I replaced the striker spring on my G30 and got improvement. I did get 1 light primer strike out of 40 rounds, but that's much better than 1 per 5 rounds. We'll test again next week. The G26 continues to impress me...when using OEM Glock parts. The thick grip, especially paired with the Magpul 12 round mags, works well for me. I got good hits with double taps, and one handed drills. Check one out, if you can control it, the G26 performs better than expected, at least for me. Dumb chronograph question: weren't the original chronographs made with double mesh screens that registered a contact closure when the slug passed through? Two such arrays spaced X feet apart would give you two contact closures, spaced apart in time, from which a velocity could be calculated.
I also think I recall reading about a "poor man's chrono" that consisted of a cylinder of graph paper standing on a phonograph turntable. Fire a round through it, and measure the displacement of the second hole from the exact 180 degree opposite expected if the round went at infinite velocity (or the cylinder were stationary). From some of the reports on X this is going to go off in other cities over the next few days/weeks. Posted by: JackStraw at June 08, 2025 09:42 PM (viF8m) 245

Prices on the Garmin Xero Chrono are coming down. There are a couple of new players in the game now too! Labradar has a new much smaller and better unit. Athlon has a great new unit too, as well as Caldwell. They're all competitive pricewise. The Caldwell and Labradar units calculate your true Ballistic coefficient as well.

I haven't heard of measuring bullet velocity with a rotating drum target, though it would theoretically be possible if you got a big enough drum spinning fast enough.
I do know that shotgun experimenters would shoot at rotating drum targets to learn about what those pellets are actually doing. It turns out the pellets travel in a "cloud" formation, and not in a flat disc shape. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 08, 2025 09:45 PM (d1dHP) 248
Prices on the Garmin Xero Chrono are coming down.
Bunch of places now have it at $550. I would really like to get one. Check into the Athlon competitor. From the YouTube vids, seems very comparable but ~$200 cheaper. Maybe won't impress the range babes as much though. Posted by: Oddbob at June 08, 2025 09:47 PM (/y8xj) 249
164 Yes, Jackstraw, now that I’m retired again I have some extra time. Keeps me happy blogging about felines and firearms. Not felines with firearms, mind you.

Yes, indeed. Those original paper screens, which had to be replaced for each shot, allowed advanced hobbyists to measure velocity at home for the first time. Prior to that, they had to send their loads off to a laboratory to get them tested.
Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 08, 2025 09:36 PM (d1dHP) OK. Dumb idea time. Make two discs of styrofoam insulation board, each say 3 feet in diameter. Mount them 3 feet apart on a common axle. Use your computer printer to print out paper segments to stick on those discs, with radial lines "X" minutes apart. "X" being chosen such that, with a set rotary speed for the axle, X represents one millisecond of travel time between the discs. Three feet of travel in one millisecond = 3000 FPS. The styrofoam discs ought to last for a hundred rounds or so before being totally torn up. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 08, 2025 09:49 PM (gK870) 252

If you really want to get old school for measuring velocity, make a ballistic pendulum.
Fashion a swinging target that will capture the bullet. Carefully measure the mass that is going to swing. Rig up a recording device to measure how far the target swings when it is hit. Dig out your Physics 101 textbook. Calculate the work that was done and the energy required to do it. This should be the same as the bullet's energy. Knowing the mass of the bullet, you can calculate the velocity. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 08, 2025 09:59 PM (d1dHP) 258
