But the new research reveals this may not be the case, and instead suggests cats have special "pads" that help them produce their ultra-low-frequency purrs. Cockatoo dances to songs from Wicked. I don't know anything about that show, but bird dancing is always amusing. Even though the movie came out rather recently, Pearl is no stranger to 'Wicked,' Jenkins says. In the "What Is This Feeling?" video's caption, Jenkins writes "Pearl LOVES to sing and dance! I had no idea how happy her love for Wicked would make people!

Gross cat story of the day:
Last night I walked into my library to show my cat Allie some affection. I was wearing socks, like usual. I took one step into the library and my left foot went *squish* as I stepped in something unpleasant. Then I took another step and my right foot went *squish* as I stepped in a second instance of something unpleasant. Fan-freakin'-tastic. Jake had a vestibular incident this morning. He was very wobbly and threw up. I called a vet (new one as my regular shut down her practice). He said that the way his eyes were tracking indicated something involving the brain, rather than an inner ear problem. He took a blood sample.
This vet is a 23 mile drive each way, so I had time to think. And I remembered that DMSO is helpful in damage from strokes. This is not exactly the same but seemed like it was worth a try. I put some DMSO on his temples, under his ears. Got called about the blood work, which showed no problems, and headed back to get some prednisone and antibiotic (on the off chance this is tick bourne illness). Got home and Jake's eyes look fine. I take him out and he is walking okay. He got his pills with chicken nuggets and everything stayed down. He's eaten his regular meal and gone to the lake. I'm not going to say he is out of the woods yet, but he certainly seems better. I'm going to give him some more DMSO tonight. Posted by: Notsothoreau at June 07, 2025 03:43 PM (AcTAo) 24
All I know about cats purring is that it changes according to how they're breathing. If super relaxed and breathing slow... the purr is low and slow. But if the cat's breathing a little faster the purr is higher pitched.
At least with ours this is true. Posted by: Martini Farmer at June 07, 2025 03:43 PM (Q4IgG) 25

DMSO is useful for arthritis pain, which is the main reason I have it. I found the studies on using it for strokes interesting. There's really nothing else the vet can do other than see if prednisone helps. It's pointless to do an MRI. Jake is 10 and I wouldn't put him through surgery. I'll be happy if he has a few more good years left.

Bostonians know how to drive quite well, they just don’t drive like the rest of the U.S. You enter the Boston metro area and you have to remember that things like turn signals, brake lights, street signs and stop lights basically have no meaning.
Need to change lanes? Elsewhere you’d signal and wait for an opening. In Boston you just go for it. The other cars move out of the way. It’s all very organic and seemingly disorganized, but with its own internal logic whose prime directive is to keep traffic flowing. Afternoon, Pet Folken!
Scampydog, I loved the cat videos. Yes, Cats are more than pets, but I've never known one to assist in household tasks. They may *think* they are assisting, like when they hop the bed in the middle of my changing sheets, but they aren't really assisting. Supervising, more like. When I woke from my nap just now, big black Stirling climbed onto and settled upon my chest, purring steadily. Little Dagny doesn't sleep with me very often. But she will settle on the bathroom counter and keep me company as I brush my teeth or shave. As for the purring, I recall a TV documentary long ago saying that purring must be a form of communicating with humans or other cats. They don't do it when they are alone. Researchers recorded them alone in a chamber, and only when a human or another friendly cat appeared did they purr. Perhaps it's something that evolved so that kittens could find their mothers in the days after birth and before their eyes open. The big cats do it too. Posted by: Milotull at June 07, 2025 *** The shelter was actually outside the city to the south, so we never got to see it. The drive up and back was very nice, since MS (unlike LA) paves its roads and highways. Little Stirling (as he was then) was very accepting of the trip, hardly making a sound. Probably he slept a good part of the time, as kittens do. The shelter people told me before I got there that he was male and medium-haired, and when I was there that he was smart and got along with other cats. All of which turned out to be true. Honestly ? The Pit Bulls and Cane Corsos and Rotts and such are not cute to me in the slightest. Neither are Dobermans. Because they're weapons on a leash.
Which brings me to a poor old Bulldog. They're a good dog, they're just so hard to look at. What some find cute, with that mouth and distinct snout ... I just find awful. They're good dogs though.
