O Frabjous Day! John Cornyn Down Twenty-Two Points to GOP Challenger Ken Paxton in Poll

Corey A. DeAngelis, school choice evangelist
@DeAngelisCorey

BREAKING: Ken Paxton is beating John Cornyn by 22 points in the Texas Republican Primary Election for Senate.

John Cornyn: 28%
Ken Paxton: 50%

John Cornyn is the incumbent.

Poll conducted May 27-28.

This is the worst showing for Cornyn in a poll, but other polls also have him losing.

While the gaps have been nowhere as large as 22 points, the two polls aggregated at RCP give Paxton a +7.5 lead against Cornyn, with a third candidate named Wesley Hunt getting around 15% amongst Republican primary voters. One of these polls claims to have used a sample of likely voters, but this far out from the election, that doesn't seem terribly reliable. But even if these are just RV polls, Paxton has leads in all three outside the margin of error, even if 22 points sounds somewhat fanciful.

4 I think the importance of these sorts of switches happens at the committee level.

The votes that no one pays attention to and never get counted in scorecards. The staff who write bills.

5 134 Jim Jones was SF royalty at one time, feted by all and sundry, including Dianne Feinstein as well as Harvey Milk, and IIRC Willie Brown too.

He was a big hero in SF, his church was all about helping the poor and indigent people, Mrs Jimmy Carter was a huge fan. His story is actually really interesting but I doubt anyone will ever do the real thing in a movie.

23 Was just thinking about this. Right now, it looks like Beto is going to run for Senator from Texas again in '26, although it might be Colin Allred, who just lost a race against Ted Cruz last year.

notable thing about Allred - all the pollsters said he was neck and neck with Cruz, within a couple of points, all year long, and then he lost by a 53-44 margin, just like everyone who looked at voting history and ignored stupid polls said it was going to be.

Will the Bush/GOP-e wing swing over to vote for Beto because they hate Paxton so much? I think they have a lot more support in the Texas Legislature right now than they actually have in the voting public. That's why Cornyn is polling so badly.

That's it exactly. People outside the state won't understand that it's not about anything Cornyn has done, it's about what he HASN'T done. He went to D.C. and quit paying attention to Texas completely, hardly ever even visits. He treats his office like a Grant of Nobility that is supposed to be his for life, and curse any peon back home who thinks differently.

Ted Cruz has a nasty disposition, but at least he still pays some attention to the people back home, and especially lets conservative voters know that he's on their side.

In the primary, yes. But if they have a splashy name like Beto running in the Dem primary, it's going to be hard to keep any of the faithful from voting in their own primary for him.

as far as Beto's chances - eh. He's lost 3 statewide races in a row, and in spite of the negatives on Paxton, he's a good campaigner and he's won 2 statewide races already.

People outside of SC refuse to believe it, but he's...kind of popular in SC.

SC is very establishment friendly. Graham inherited Strom Thurmond's office and learned very quickly the value of a good constituent outreach office ("My momma had problems with her Medicare, and Graham's office fixed it. Far-left activists posing as teachers have succeeded in seizing control of "public education," where the "educators" unabashedly follow Vladimir Lenin's famous dictum,

"Give us the child for 8 years and it will be a Bolshevik forever."

I think he's got a massive warchest left over from his last race when Democrats threw $100 million at him to beat him (he won by 9).

And, he has the Eric Cantor experience in the rearview mirror, knowing to never take his re-election for granted. He is the machine in SC, and the machine is going to help protect him.

I've been saying it for a while, but the only way to get Graham out of the Senate seat is to give him the governorship, and I don't think he wants to live in Columbia without the benefits of being on the Foreign Services Committee.

The Texas GOP is in the middle of an un-civil war with itself. There is the Bush Family/GOP-e and Chamber of Commerce types that run the Texas House; this session they allied with the Democrats to keep the MAGA wing from doing anything. On the other side is the Ken Paxton/ Dan Patrick (LG) wing, and they control the Texas Senate. They're at war with each other, and Paxton's impeachment a couple years ago was part of that.
Gov. Abbott is supposed to lean towards the MAGA wing, and he's been good dealing with immigration, but on all other matters he pretty much tries to keep both sides happy.

149 he Texas GOP is in the middle of an un-civil war with itself.

They fired me, and I'm sure the people I was trying to protect from having to make such a choice ended up staying. They had houses and kids too.

Because of my particular circumstances (I won full custody and the house in my divorce), my ex found out I'd been fired and sued for full custody.

I actually became much less concerned about that after the Impeachment trial in the Texas House. There were always (planted) rumors of Paxton doing all kinds of nefarious things, and when Dade Phelan announced the impeachment he said that he was going to bring hard evidence of all of it out in public, so everyone could see it.
I watched the proceedings for that reason, and was amazed (Ok, Not) when for every charge, the evidence was "My cousin's girlfriend saw this happen, and she told me, but she's not available to say anything herself." Over and over and over again.
Really? Really? All that effort and THAT was the best you could come up with???
Similarly, he was hounded for 10 years by felony charges that could never be brought to trial. And in the end, these "serious charges" that were supposed to put him in jail for 20 years were plea bargained down to... 100 hours community service? Are you f'n kidding me???? You spent a decade for that???

Ranked choice voting wasn't effective in Alaska until well after Murky won as a write-in.

What actually happened there is that her frenz from the DC Deep State flew in planeloads of money. The actual Republican nominee got essentially no support from the RNC.

That, plus every Democrat voting for her rather than her own waterhead candidate, plus the terminally clueless who just voted for the name they recognized, was enough to push her over the top in a small-population state like Alaska.

Even Amtrak has only a single line going from LA to San Jose and the East Bay (Fallujah with palm trees and hippies). The coastal line with a shitload of stops about every 15 miles slowing it down to a crawl. Never comes close to Frisco. You have to get off in San Jose and catch the local commuter rail to get to Frisco, while dodging the bums on the train pissing on your luggage.

The current Central Cal line through the SJ Valley goes from E Bay down to Bakersfield, and then you have to ride an Amtrak bus to get over Tejon Pass and into LA. No way that HSR gets over Tejon unless the engines are nuclear-powered.

It's worse, they have not even finalized the plan of WHERE the tracks would go.

Highway construction of 99 Highway at one end (Merced) was supposed to widen the highway to 3 lanes on each side... started 15 years ago under Obama, shovel ready project... but... as the High Speed Rail route would impact it, they halted all the widening part of the project... because they have not got the right of ways to the land needed... which would be right next to the Highway.

Note, they did do 2 YEARS of highway construction through Merced... and Atwater (next town over)... and during construction it was rated as the most dangerous highway in America... almost daily accidents... but did NOT WIDEN THE FUCKIN HIGHWAY.

Oh... and... Central Valley Calif... which votes Republican normally.

Gordon Gallagher story. He was representing a criminal defendant and promised him the moon. There was a suppression issue that would exclude the evidence. But he couldn't work for free so the defendant needed to come up with an additional x thousands of dollars or he would have to cast his fate upon the competence of the public defender's office. My smart ass friend knew there was no such suppression issue so he talked the judge into appointing Gallagher as court appointed attorney leaving him to explain why the suppression issue went away.
