Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Morning Rant![]() For the first time in recent memory, one has finally gone our way. In what is likely just the first act in this theater of the culture war, Hegseth's Defense Department is beginning to do away with subversive ship names. Assuming the report is true, first up: oilers. First oiler: USNS Harvey Milk. Something I didn't know before is that apparently all of our modern oilers are named after "civil rights icons." USNS Harvey Milk was christened during the Obama Administration by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. Milk was a Navy man, but that isn't why they named the ship after him. They named the ship after him for being a gay activist, and it's now to be rechristened under a new name yet to be announced. Per the article, neither the choice nor the timing are coincidental, as well they shouldn't be:Military.com reviewed a memorandum from the Office of the Secretary of the Navy -- the official who holds the power to name Navy ships -- that showed the sea service had come up with rollout plans for the renaming of the oiler ship USNS Harvey Milk. A defense official confirmed that the Navy was making preparations to strip the ship of its name but noted that Navy Secretary John Phelan was ordered to do so by Hegseth. The official also said that the timing of the announcement -- occurring during Pride month -- was intentional.Good. ... the memo reviewed by Military.com noted that the renaming was being done so that there is "alignment with president and SECDEF objectives and SECNAV priorities of reestablishing the warrior culture," apparently referencing President Donald Trump, Hegseth and Phelan.Excellent. Even better, all the usual suspects are already shrieking: Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the former House Speaker who represents much of San Francisco, in a statement Tuesday called the decision to rename the ship "a surrender of a fundamental American value: to honor the legacy of those who worked to build a better country."Pull the other one, Nance. It jingles. And more may be on the way: CBS reported Tuesday that the Navy is also considering renaming other John Lewis-class oilers including the USNS Thurgood Marshall, USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and USNS Harriet Tubman. ... Unlike the Milk, though, some of the ships being considered for renaming have yet to be completed.Pelosi, of course, has more to say, too: "Our military is the most powerful in the world -- but this spiteful move does not strengthen our national security or the 'warrior' ethos," she added.Yes it does, Nancy. This "spiteful move" as you call it is absolutely about both national security and the 'warrior' ethos - in the battle against you and your kind. This isn't about improving the way we look abroad or striking fear into foreign enemies, it's about striking fear into domestic culture warriors who have for decades run roughshod in their campaign of erasure and eradication of American symbols. The battle may finally - again assuming that the report is true - be amping up. Renaming the oilers, Trump forbidding modern architecture for government buildings, etc. are all important plays in the ongoing battle for American culture. The timing of the Harvey Milk rename is as stupendous as the act itself. It is - if you will pardon the expression - a bit more than a "shot across the bow." It's a broadside, and it's been a long time coming. The only potential concern I have is how Military.com got early access to the memo. If it was leaked, Hegseth needs to find and punish the leaker. Renaming a ship or rejecting their architectural perversions are perhaps little things, but they are also a clear signal that there is a counteroffensive under way. Hegseth is off to a very strong start in his big job to undo some of the subversion of our military over the past decade or so, and this action widens the campaign as it clearly targets leftist symbols for destruction, shouting that there is no place for leftist cultural revolution in the United States military. That's a good thing because symbols do matter and halting the destruction of our symbols and imposing the destruction of theirs is long overdue. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

One element of our culture war - perhaps the element of the culture war - is the running battle of symbols. Cultural symbols are always destroyed by a conquering force.

I'm against naming ships after people at all. I'll concede an exception for truly exceptional people who are long dead whose contributions to the country have stood the test of time.
I'm totally against naming them after minor perverts and faggots or slimy activists -- all far left, natch -- or even recent people who done well for the country. And all I have to add - beware all those Republicans who tell you to "pick your battles". Are names important ? Well - your political enemies sure think so. And they fight on all fronts. So you lose, by default, wherever you don't show up to fight. Exhausting, isn't it - the notion that no situation is simply "solved". But rather everything is a constant battle. Well - that's the terms your enemies have chosen. So you'll either fight in the gutter with them, or lose. Don't trust those supposedly on your side that tell you "its just a name". Civil rights hero?
Name it USS Representative Robert Smalls. Born into slavery, he escaped to the blackade of Charlseton with a steamboat, the other enslaved members of the crew, their families, and thr boat's cargo of cannons. He volunteered for the Union Army afterwards, piloting supply transports in battle. During one battle the boat's assigned captain abandoned the bridge so Smalls took command and completed the mission. After the war he learned to read and write, went into business, and then into politics. He served in South Carolina's legislature then the US House of Representatives. Democrats fabricated bribery charges against him, dropping the charges in exchange for charges of vote fraud against a number of Democrats getting dropped. Smalls continued attending Republican national conventions as long as he could, despite the Jim Crow Democrats making it impossible for him to actually continue in politics. The only obstacles is thr Navy already has a cruiser named for him, but its name doesn't mention his title. Maybe use the name of the boat he captured during his escape -- the Planter -- or the name of the boat he took command of? Posted by: Rob Crawford at June 04, 2025 11:27 AM (iX1qt) 56

Importing slaves was banned in 1808 even before the British banned it though the British banned slavery itself at the same time.
And I'll say it again - differently this time and maybe slower. Nobody here ever owned a slave. Nobody here has ever been a slave. So all the preening about "my party freed the slaves" or "my part of the world isn't dirtied by nasty old slavery" is complete bullshit. The North and the South enjoyed slavery and indentured servitude both in large portions. Slaves and servants were imported and owned all across the country at one time or another. “Democracy” isn’t mentioned, not even once, in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, or the Bill of Rights.
There’s a reason for that. And we’re living it. Tub of Lard is an idiot Posted by: Common Tater at June 04, 2025 12:08 PM (srX5Y) 265

226 Milk joined the United States Navy during the Korean War. He served aboard the submarine rescue ship USS Kittiwake (ASR-13) as a diving officer. Milk later transferred to Naval Station, San Diego to serve as a diving instructor. Posted by: SMOD at June 04, 2025 11:58 AM ----- His separation from the service came after he was discovered telling diving students that sodomy was an essential, secret part of the training. They ought to rename 'em all after Confederate generals. The nutbags on the left would spontaneously combust in unison.
Posted by: Polka will never die --------- At the VA the other day, I was talking to a female administrator. a black lady as it happens. She is a Vet, so we chatted a bit. I asked her about her MOS, and where she trained. 'Gordon', she replied, and added, 'they've renamed it something or other'. Which makes a point. Those that were there (or Bragg, etc., etc.) will always think of it that way. They have a history with the place, and history cannot be altered by tearing things down. I agree wholeheartedly with the decision to get rid of the name Harvey Milk (was there ever a gayer name than that). But I suggest they might consider keeping Harriet Tubman. She was quite the warrior.
