Let's go with the 3,353 joules...
That's 3.18 BTU. Now, let's convert to watts... Let's say you can do one search every 4 seconds or so. So 15 per minute, that's 900 per hour. That's 839 watts. At the average electricity rate in the US of 17 cents per KW-Hr, that's 14.3 cents worth of electricity. And that's why they're using "joules" Posted by: deadrody at June 03, 2025 04:49 AM (vgB0v) 9

Not as much work today as on other Tuesdays, but enough to make me look forward to a nap in a few hours. Called India and pointed out that this has been going on for over a month. Contacted the Post Office and appealed their rejection of my claim. Looked up the potential cost of going to Netgear's headquarters to inflict mortal terror upon them. Posted by: NR Pax at June 03, 2025 05:27 AM (BpO1e) 20

Perhaps the Perfesser might mention the book Around the World on a Bicycle by Thomas Stevens. He began his journey in 1884 on a 'penny-farthing' (big front wheel, small rear wheel). Volume 1 takes him from San Francisco to Tehran and Volume 2 carries him the rest of the way. It's available on Project Gutenberg, but also as a physical book. @21/FenelonSpoke: "Thanks, The old broken phone didn't have a physical SIM. It is an e-SIM."
Hopefully the battery will just die by the time you need to ship it then. Thanks for the reminder about e-SIMs being a thing. I'd completely forgotten that was an option. I ordered my new (and first ever) smart phone with a physical SIM because I don't trust that the phone wouldn't glitch and lose track of the e-SIM credentials at some point in the future, causing me a whole mess of trouble. That and if the phone got damaged, I knew I could move the SIM to a new replacement phone and keep on truckin'. Oh, and by the way, that phone has become quite useful for things like "reminder alarms", using Waze as a backup GPS, receiving messages and emails from dispatch, and a few other practical things. I've seen them become focus-points (even addictions) for some people though, something I will stalwartly avoid. Apps that get yappy at me with too many notifications get "notifications" permission removed from them. I did just fine in life without those notifications before, so I don't need them now. Have to keep that in mind. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 03, 2025 06:03 AM (O7YUW) 40

Speaking of trees talking to people, there was a project queued up and completed about eight years back at a scout camp to build a teaching area (finally), including a pavilion for instructing the scout skills merit badges (orienteering, first aid, camping, cooking, pioneering and the like). To do this would involve (gasp!) cutting down some trees. Just prior to the start of the building, when the plans had been announced, former and current members of both the nature and scout skills instructional staff had gone on a hair shirt-donning, rending of garments, and loud wailing kick in an online forum dedicated to said camp about "those poor trees". Rather than propose any workable alternate path, they fixated on "What about the trees?" and one went so far as to warn that "the trees would extract their revenge". A scout from my troop, who was in charge of the scout skills' program, came into this de facto wake for the doomed trees to warn those speaking of trees getting "their revenge" that they had best knock that off if they had any intention of being employed at said camp for the upcoming summer. The wailing of the banshees stopped right quick. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at June 03, 2025 06:06 AM (xG4kz) 42

@19/NR Pax: "Looked up the potential cost of going to Netgear's headquarters to inflict mortal terror upon them."
Reminds me of many many years ago in the 90's when I bought one of the first CD-R drives (an external) from Yamaha, their CD-R 100. It had cost me $1,000 USD back in 1996 ('97?) and it died on me just after one year, just past the warranty period. I contacted the company. They told me it would be $350 just as a bench charge to look at it to see what it would take to repair it. I got an RMA number just in case I decided I actually wanted to go through with the repair, but by that point, there were replacement drives on the market by multiple manufacturers that were priced less than the blasted bench charge from Yamaha, so I bought a Plextor and kept soldiering on. I was sorely tempted to take that Yamaha drive to the range and put a few .50 caliber holes in it and send it back with the RMA number with a post-it note that said, "RMA THIS (you bastards!)" But... I didn't want them to actually charge me that $350 bench charge, and they might have. :-) Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 03, 2025 06:17 AM (O7YUW) 50

Why do you need a fake Bible verse to affirm your brokenness? That means that you fundamentally accept that Scripture is a valid foundation for ordering your affairs. And yet, you reject it out of hand and refuse to accept or engage with even the most rudimentary aspects of it. Why not insist someone fan-fic a new chapter of the Avesta or the Bhagavad Gita or the Chilton's Manual for a 1978 Chevette for you? >> And that is why I refuse to use it. I understand why people would be resistant to AI, but there are certain aspects of it that are magical and time saving. I needed to create a dummy database for my ERP, I fed in the criteria to ChatGpt and it was able to spit out a 1000 entry database in seconds, reviewed the database, asked to modify it, and it performed the modifications and spit out the new DB in a couple of seconds. Once my program is ready, I will take manufactured price lists and feed them into chatgpt to create the final master vendor database and subsequent db updates. The time saved is enormous.
