Trump-Backed EU Skeptic Wins Polish Presidency

The office of the presidency in Poland isn't the head of the government. That's the Prime Minister, who is currently liberal Donald Tusk.

But the President has the power to veto the actions of the PM, which presumably is what the new President will do.

In a dramatic political upset with wide-reaching implications for Europe, right-wing nationalist Karol Nawrocki was declared the winner of Poland's presidential election late Sunday night. Backed by the conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) and U.S. President Donald Trump, Nawrocki won 50.89 percent of the vote, edging out centrist liberal Rafał Trzaskowski, who took 49.11 percent, according to Poland's electoral commission.
The results overturned earlier exit polls showing a slight lead for Trzaskowski and sent a clear message from conservative voters eager to push back against what they view as the creeping influence of globalism and liberal social values. Voter turnout reached 71.6 percent, reflecting the high stakes and deep divide across Polish society.

The result deals a major blow to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose pro-European government will now have to navigate a combative and politically opposed president. Though Poland's presidency is largely ceremonial, the office wields the power to veto legislation -- a power Nawrocki is expected to use often.
Analysts suggest a tense political period lies ahead. "Nawrocki's presidency means a high-level conflict between the president and Tusk," said Joanna Sawicka of Polityka Insight. With Tusk's coalition unable to override presidential vetoes, his legislative agenda is effectively gridlocked for the foreseeable future.

Depends what you mean by "closer." Historically, Russian and Ukraine are sister East-Slavic languages. Polish is a West-Slavic language, along with Czech and Slovak. However, Ukrainian has a lot of Polish loanwords and some grammatical influence from Polish as well, I think. So, it's more "Polonized" than Russian.

Note: I do know Russian, but I don't know Ukrainian much at all. Just going on my general linguistic knowledge here.

Twice a year I go to B&N. I think it's gotten better in the aisles. The display tables are still full of New Age crap, woomyn's studies, and novelty items. But I can actually find what I'm looking for, or order it with free shipping.

Yup. I figured I'd always have to self-publish. But I'm giving it a few months to find an agent.

Oh, and now all the submissions are by query, so you have to fill out this questionnaire that asks things like "do you have an agent," "did you publish before," and "how many books you sold?"

not quite. basically you have Rus and Slav. Poland and Western Ukraine are essentially the same phenotype and their languages are super close. my friends can speak to other Ukes, and Poles, but not Russians.

What happened was, the Soviets moves tons of Russians into easter Ukraine to dilute the native population and increase Rus control over those pesky slavs. so right now you have a lot of Rus/Russian speaking people living in Ukraine, especially to the east.

but the true Ukrainians are slavs, they speak Ukrainian and they can converse easily with Poles. and now they live mostly in Western Ukraine and/or have left their country entirely.

181 Listened to an interview with Z just before the festivities began 3 years ago, could follow a lot of what he was saying (Russian language background, zero Uke). Polish and Czech have lots of familiar words but spoken, nah, pick up little, written can sometimes be sussed out.

Years ago in Brazil they broadcast Spanish-language novelas (prime-time soap operas) from Spain as is. Brazilian novelas, the other hot ones at the time, were broadcast (at least in Uruguay and Argentina) with sub-titles or voice-overs in Spanish. It's a weird one-way membrane I saw in Brazil a lot. At a bbq in Curitiba I had to (crudely) translate for German-speaking Chileans who of course were also native Spanish speakers but couldn't get much out of Brazilian Portuguese.

This was not my experience. I was at Huachuca after DLI for Russian. One of my buddies there was a Ukrainian speaker. He could understand most of what I said in Russian; I could understand about 30 to 40 percent of his Uke gibberish. (But he was a native Ukrainian speaker; so maybe he had Russian experience in his background too.)

Lindsey Graham was purportedly in Ukraine days prior to the drone attack. No word on who else was there. The Ukes are all over the socials describing how they pulled this stunt off. Not good OPSEC. So... they probably had help.

Russia has a pretty good supply of non-nuclear cruise missiles and ballistic missiles they can ready and launch at Ukraine when they feel like it. I would expect if this is what Putin orders it will be a significant strike. And if Putin believes NATO and/or the US was involved in any aspect of the drone attack, he'll dish out some payback on that account too. Probably some asymmetrical horseshit like cutting fiber-optic cables under the Atlantic or disabling pipelines we're using. Or if he's really pissed at us, something a bit more unnerving.

As I said, I am talking in historical terms, not present-day ones. Ukrainian has become more Polish-like over time, but it is still, historically, a sister language of Russian.

It's kind of like how English and German are closely related historically, but English sometimes looks and sounds more like French because of the immense influence of French on English following the Norman Conquest of England.

How do the accents compare? I've heard that *written* Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are easy to understand for native speakers of any of the three, but the Swedes and Norwegians have a hard time understanding spoken Danish.

What premise there is for continuing this war, from the Ukrainian side, ONLY makes sense if you're going to commit Nato troops.

Otherwise, the clock is ticking on how much longer Ukraine can hold out. And the ONLY reasons they've held on this long is because we fund everything they do... and the Russians are waiting for us to come to our senses.

Kinda sorta. I was Army Reserve the whole time. But DLI+ put me on active duty for long enough that I may as well have enlisted fulltime.

307 I'm a white guy trying to publish his first novel. I don't have any of that. The book does have a strong central character who is a lady, though. She's a female white labrador, though, so that doesn't seem to count.

It depends on what the genre is. I've found a few indie presses who are open to male authors. Mostly scifi and fantasy, though.

My book isn't really sci-fi or fantasy, although it has fantasy elements. The thing is the reader and characters don't realize that until big reveals towards the end. For 2/3 the book, its a "normal" coming-of-age story -- albeit a fantastical one with talking animals -- with only hints that things may not be what they seem. Then the reveal that the characters have been living in a fantasy world the entire time, without them (or the reader) knowing it.

312 bulg is right regarding Ukrainian being closer to Russian than Ukrainian is to Polish.

Slavic noun declension, verbs of motion, and the like are one thing. Polish consonants are next level.
